RESUMO

Wildland firefighters (WLFFs) experience lung function decline due to occupational exposure to fire smoke. WLFFs typically do not wear respiratory personal protective equipment, and if they do, it is a simple bandana, which is not effective at filtering smoke. To pinpoint the biological underpinnings of abnormal respiratory function following 3-7 years of WLFF service, we exposed mice to Douglas fir smoke (DFS) over 8 weeks. Following exposure, we assessed changes in lung structure through Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and histological analysis, which was supported by immunohistochemistry staining. With MRI, we found that the signal decay time, T2*, from ultrashort echo time (UTE) images was significantly shorter in mice exposed to DFS compared to air controls. In addition, the variation in T2* was more heterogeneously distributed throughout the left lung in DFS-exposed mice, compared to air controls. As confirmed by histological analysis, shorter T2* was caused by larger parenchyma airspace sizes and not fibrotic remodeling. Destruction of the alveolar spaces was likely due to inflammation, as measured by an influx of CD68+ macrophages and destruction due to enhanced neutrophil elastase. In addition, measurements of airspace dimensions from histology were more heterogeneously distributed throughout the lung, corroborating the enhanced relative dispersion of T2*. Findings from this study suggest that the decline in lung function observed in WLFFs may be due to emphysema-like changes in the lung, which can be quantified with MRI.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: China has implemented policies to make rare diseases more affordable. While previous studies evaluated overall affordability, few have examined affordability differences across regions and disease types. Given the vastness of China and varying medical policies across cities, this study assesses the affordability of rare diseases based on China's First List of Rare Diseases (CFLRD), National Reimbursement Drug List (NRDL), and outpatient chronic and special disease policies in each prefecture. METHOD: Six rare diseases were selected and the average annual treatment cost of all relevant drugs in NRDL was calculated for each disease. Based on the WHO/HAI standardized approach, the study analyzed 289 cities with outpatient chronic and special disease policies, measured the security levels by the actual reimbursement ratio of Basic Medical Insurance (BMI) and affordability by the ratio of individual expenses after reimbursement to the annual disposable income of urban residents in the province. The security levels and affordability differences across disease types and provinces were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test and the K-W test. RESULT: The affordability of rare diseases varied significantly on the disease types and annual treatment cost. Diseases with an annual treatment cost below 100 000 yuan are affordable to all prefectures even with low reimbursement rates, while those with a higher treatment cost were not affordable in at least 80% of prefectures even though the reimbursement ratio is high. The affordability of the same disease varies significantly across provinces and municipalities. Outpatient chronic and special diseases insurance and critical illness insurance, and the inconsistencies between them, result in regional differences. CONCLUSION: Although China has made progress in improving the affordability of rare diseases, significant differences persist between cities and diseases. The study suggests the optimization of the BMI system and explores independent funds and innovative insurance models to enhance the affordability of rare diseases, particularly those with extremely high treatment costs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Proton range uncertainty has been the main factor limiting the ability of proton therapy to concentrate doses to tumors to their full potential. Ionoacoustic (IA) range verification is an approach to reducing this uncertainty by detecting thermoacoustic waves emitted from an irradiated volume immediately following a pulsed proton beam delivery; however, the signal weakness has been an obstacle to its clinical application. To increase the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) with the conventional piezoelectric hydrophone (PH), the detector-sensitive volume needs to be large, but it could narrow the range of available beam angles and disturb real-time images obtained during beam delivery. PURPOSE: To prevent this issue, we investigated a millimeter-sized optical hydrophone (OH) that exploits the laser interferometric principle. For two types of IA waves [γ-wave emitted from the Bragg peak (BP) and a spherical IA wave with resonant frequency (SPIRE) emitted from the gold fiducial marker (GM)], comparisons were made with PH in terms of waveforms, SNR, range detection accuracy, and signal intensity robustness against the small detector misalignment, particularly for SPIRE. METHODS: A 100-MeV proton beam with a 27 ns pulse width and 4 mm beam size was produced using a fixed-field alternating gradient accelerator and was irradiated to the water phantom. The GM was set on the beam's central axis. Acrylic plates of various thicknesses, up to 12 mm, were set in front of the phantoms to shift the proton range. OH was set distal and lateral to the beam, and the range was estimated using the time-of-flight method for γ-wave and by comparing with the calibration data (SPIRE intensity versus the distance between the GM and BP) derived from an IA wave transport simulation for SPIRE. The BP dose per pulse was 0.5-0.6 Gy. To measure the variation in SPIRE amplitude against the hydrophone misalignment, the hydrophone was shifted by ± 2 mm at a maximum in lateral directions. RESULTS: Despite its small size, OH could detect γ-wave with a higher SNR than the conventional PH (diameter, 29 mm), and a single measurement was sufficient to detect the beam range with a submillimeter accuracy in water. In the SPIRE measurement, OH was far more robust against the detector misalignment than the focused PH (FPH) used in our previous study [5%/mm (OH) versus 80%/mm (FPH)], and the correlation between the measured SPIRE intensity and the distance between the GM and BP agreed well with the simulation results. However, the OH sensitivity was lower than the FPH sensitivity, and about 5.6-Gy dose was required to decrease the intensity variation among measurements to less than 10%. CONCLUSION: The miniature OH was found to detect weak IA signals produced by proton beams with a BP dose used in hypofractionated regimens. The OH sensitivity improvement at the MHz regime is worth exploring as the next step.

RESUMO

There exist the uncertainties and the inequality constraints in permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) system. In order to meet the safety control requirements in industrial applications, the state transformation is used to meet the inequality constraints for limiting the outputs within desired bounds. Then, fuzzy set theory, which is different from fuzzy logic, is used to describe uncertainty, and the fuzzy PMSM dynamical model is established. Based on that, a robust control with high-order term is proposed to compensate for the time-varying uncertainty. Furthermore, for improving the system performance and decreasing the control cost, the Stackelberg game is introduced into the optimization scheme design, in which the leader plays a more important role than follower. These characteristic corresponds to the influence of the two tunable control parameters on the system. Thus, the optimal parameters are obtained by the rules of Stackelberg game. Finally, experimental results show the effectiveness of the above theories.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Intracranial artery dissection (IAD) is a pathological dissection of the arterial wall. .However, the morphological features and imaging characteristics of patients with intracranial artery dissection (IAD) remain poorly understood. METHODS: The study reports on 70 IAD patients (30 culprit and 40 non-culprit). All participants underwent high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (HR-MRI) scans. The morphological features and imaging characteristics of artery dissection were carefully investigated. Demographics and clinical characteristics of culprit and non-culprit patients were also collected. Apparent differences between the two groups, which could be used as biomarkers for ischemic event caused by the culprit dissection, were identified by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. RESULTS: The IAD patients studied could be classified into five different types on the basis of morphological features: classical dissection (n = 31), fusiform aneurysm (n = 2), long dissected aneurysm (n = 9), dolichoectatic dissecting aneurysm (n = 6), and saccular aneurysm (n = 22). The direct sites of artery dissection (double lumen and intimal flap) can be seen in most IAD patients on HR-MRI. Additionally, the presence of hypertension, double lumen and intimal flap were associated with culprit lesions and might be considered biomarkers for the ischemic event caused by the culprit dissection. CONCLUSIONS: Analysis showed that HR-MRI allowed easy visualization of abnormal morphology of artery dissection lesions. This was of great significance for the diagnosis of IAD and gave a better understanding of its pathophysiological mechanism.

RESUMO

Objective: Avelumab (MSB0010718C) is a fully human anti-programmed cell death ligand 1(PD-L1) antibody against PD-L1 interactions and enhances immune activation against tumor cells in the meantime. Avelumab has been approved for locally advanced or metastatic urothelial cancer (mUC) after disease progression in several countries. We therefore conducted this study to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of avelumab maintenance therapy for advanced or mUC from the perspective of the United States (US) and China payer. Methods: A Markov simulation model was performed based on clinical trial JAVELIN Bladder 100. Utilities and costs adopted in this analysis were derived from published literature and clinical trials. Incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) were calculated to compare the avelumab maintenance therapy group (AVE group) and the best supportive care group (CON group). Results: The ICER of the AVE group compared with the CON group were $38,369.50 and $16,150.29 per QALYs in the overall population and in the PD-L1-positive population, respectively. While the ICER of AVE group compared with CON group were $241,610.25 and $100,528.29 per QALYs in the overall population and in the PD-L1-positive population, respectively. Conclusion: Avelumab maintenance therapy was a cost-effective first-line treatment compared with BSC in patients with mUC which were not progressed with platinum-based chemotherapy not only in the PD-L1-positive population but also in the overall population based on the current willingness to pay (WTP) of $150,000 in the US. It was not cost-effective both in the overall population and in the PD-L1 positive population at the WTP threshold of $30,447.09 in China.

RESUMO

SUMMARY: Bayesian inference in biological modeling commonly relies on Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling of a multidimensional and non-Gaussian posterior distribution that is not analytically tractable. Here, we present the implementation of a practical MCMC method in the open-source software package PyBioNetFit (PyBNF), which is designed to support parameterization of mathematical models for biological systems. The new MCMC method, am, incorporates an adaptive move proposal distribution. For warm starts, sampling can be initiated at a specified location in parameter space and with a multivariate Gaussian proposal distribution defined initially by a specified covariance matrix. Multiple chains can be generated in parallel using a computer cluster. We demonstrate that am can be used to successfully solve real-world Bayesian inference problems, including forecasting of new Coronavirus Disease 2019 case detection with Bayesian quantification of forecast uncertainty. AVAILABILITY AND IMPLEMENTATION: PyBNF version 1.1.9, the first stable release with am, is available at PyPI and can be installed using the pip package-management system on platforms that have a working installation of Python 3. PyBNF relies on libRoadRunner and BioNetGen for simulations (e.g. numerical integration of ordinary differential equations defined in SBML or BNGL files) and Dask.Distributed for task scheduling on Linux computer clusters. The Python source code can be freely downloaded/cloned from GitHub and used and modified under terms of the BSD-3 license (https://github.com/lanl/pybnf). Online documentation covering installation/usage is available (https://pybnf.readthedocs.io/en/latest/). A tutorial video is available on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aRqpqFOiS4&t=63s). SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: Supplementary data are available at Bioinformatics online.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Helicobacter pylori infection is mostly a family-based infectious disease. To facilitate its prevention and management, a national consensus meeting was held to review current evidence and propose strategies for population-wide and family-based H. pylori infection control and management to reduce the related disease burden. METHODS: Fifty-seven experts from 41 major universities and institutions in 20 provinces/regions of mainland China were invited to review evidence and modify statements using Delphi process and grading of recommendations assessment, development and evaluation system. The consensus level was defined as ≥80% for agreement on the proposed statements. RESULTS: Experts discussed and modified the original 23 statements on family-based H. pylori infection transmission, control and management, and reached consensus on 16 statements. The final report consists of three parts: (1) H. pylori infection and transmission among family members, (2) prevention and management of H. pylori infection in children and elderly people within households, and (3) strategies for prevention and management of H. pylori infection for family members. In addition to the 'test-and-treat' and 'screen-and-treat' strategies, this consensus also introduced a novel third 'family-based H. pylori infection control and management' strategy to prevent its intrafamilial transmission and development of related diseases. CONCLUSION: H. pylori is transmissible from person to person, and among family members. A family-based H. pylori prevention and eradication strategy would be a suitable approach to prevent its intra-familial transmission and related diseases. The notion and practice would be beneficial not only for Chinese residents but also valuable as a reference for other highly infected areas.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Thiophanate-methyl and its metabolite carbendazim are broad-spectrum fungicides used on many crops. The residues of these chemicals could result in potential environmental and human health problems. Therefore, investigations of the dissipation and residue behaviors of thiophanate-methyl and its metabolite carbendazim on cowpeas and associated dietary risk assessments are essential for the safety of agricultural products. RESULTS: A simple analytical approach using liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry was developed and validated for the determination of thiophanate-methyl and carbendazim concentrations in cowpeas. Good linearity (R2 > 0.998) was obtained, and the recoveries and relative standard deviations were 80.0-104.7% and 1.4-5.2%, respectively. The dissipation rates of thiophanate-methyl, carbendazim and total carbendazim were high (half-lives of 1.61-2.46 days) and varied in the field cowpea samples because of the different weather conditions and planting patterns. Based on the definition of thiophanate-methyl, the terminal residues of total carbendazim in cowpea samples were below the maximum residue limits set by Japan for other legumes. The acute and chronic risk quotients of three analytes were 0.0-27.6% in cowpea samples gathered from all terminal residue treatments, which were below 100%. CONCLUSION: An optimized approach for detecting thiophanate-methyl and carbendazim in cowpeas was applied for the investigation of field-trial samples. The potential acute and chronic dietary risks of thiophanate-methyl, carbendazim and total carbendazim to the health of Chinese consumers were low. These results could guide the safe and proper use of thiophanate-methyl in cowpeas and offer data for the dietary risk assessment of thiophanate-methyl in cowpeas. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

The industrial sector is the backbone of China's national economy. The industrial carbon emission efficiency (ICEE) of China is directly related to the achievement of carbon emission reduction targets. This paper reports on the use of the minimum distance (min-SBM) method to determine the ICEE of 30 provinces in China during 1998-2015, as well as the use of a spatial econometric method to investigate the convergence and influencing factors of the regional ICEE. The results indicate significant regional differences in the ICEE. The provinces with higher average values of ICEE are located in the eastern coastal areas, whereas the provinces with lower average values of ICEE are located in the central and western inland regions. The results of the spatial autocorrelation index reveal that China's inter-provincial ICEE exhibits significant spatial autocorrelation characteristics, and its spatial distribution demonstrates a certain regularity. The local indicators of spatial association diagram further illustrate that most provinces in China have high and low agglomeration values. With the introduction of the spatial effect, the absolute and conditional convergence rates increase. In addition to the non-significant industrial structure effect, the level of economic development, foreign direct investment, technological progress, and government intervention demonstrate a positive impact on the ICEE convergence, whereas the energy consumption structure has a negative impact. This work investigates the cause for the regional gap in China's current ICEE. Suggestions for improving the efficiency of China's industrial carbon emissions and narrowing the regional gap are provided, which serve as a reference value for China to achieve the peak of carbon dioxide emissions before 2030.

RESUMO

Performance of endoscopic procedures is associated with a risk of infection from COVID-19. This risk can be reduced by the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). However, shortage of PPE has emerged as an important issue in managing the pandemic in both traditionally high and low-resource areas. A group of clinicians and researchers from thirteen countries representing low, middle, and high-income areas has developed recommendations for optimal utilization of PPE before, during, and after gastrointestinal endoscopy with particular reference to low-resource situations. We determined that there is limited flexibility with regard to the utilization of PPE between ideal and low-resource settings. Some compromises are possible, especially with regard to PPE use, during endoscopic procedures. We have, therefore, also stressed the need to prevent transmission of COVID-19 by measures other than PPE and to conserve PPE by reduction of patient volume, limiting procedures to urgent or emergent, and reducing the number of staff and trainees involved in procedures. This guidance aims to optimize utilization of PPE and protection of health care providers.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the temporal trends in mortality and disease burden of injuries in Anhui province from 2008 to 2017, so as to provide reference for injury control and prevention. METHODS: Data of mortality were collected from 9 national surveillance points in Anhui province during 2008-2017 in the Information System for Death Cause Register and Management. The surveillance data were analyzed by using crude mortality, standardized mortality rate (SMR), potential year of life lost (PYLL), PYLL rate (PYLLR), and average of year life lost (AYLL). RESULTS: There were a total of 44855 people died from injury, accounted for 9.44% of the all-cause mortality, ranked as the fifth leading cause of deaths in the whole population, and denoted the first leading cause of deaths in the 0-44 year's group. The leading causes of injury deaths were road traffic accidents, suicide, accidental falls, drowning, and poisoning. Road traffic accidents was the primary cause of injury deaths among the male population, while suicide was the dominate cause of injury deaths among the female population. Drowning, traffic accidents, and suicide accounted for the most injury deaths among the population aged 0-14 years, 15-64 years, and above 60 years, respectively. The road traffic accidents accounted for the largest proportion of injury PYLL and PYLLR, and drowning caused the highest AYLL among injury deaths. CONCLUSION: In Anhui province, road traffic accidents, suicide, accidental falls, drowning, and poisoning were the top five causes of injury deaths that harm the health of local residents; corresponding injury prevention strategies should be formulated.

RESUMO

An accurate and simple analytical approach for the determination of residues cinerin I, cinerin II, jasmolin I, jasmolin II, pyrethrin I and pyrethrin II (six active ingredients of pyrethrins) in fresh and dried goji berries was developed and validated for analysis by gas chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. Good linearity (determination coefficient >0.99), accuracy (average recoveries of 88.3%-111.5%) and precision (intra- and inter-day relative standard deviations of 0.4%-8.3%) were obtained with the optimised determination method. The LODs and LOQs of the six analytes in two goji matrices were 0.24-2.1 µg/kg and 0.8-7 µg/kg, respectively. In a field trial, the terminal residual levels of pyrethrins (the sum of the concentrations of the six target analytes) in fresh and dried goji berry samples were <20-304 µg/kg at harvest, which could provide some information for the establishment of a maximum residue limit of pyrethrins on goji berries in China. Moreover, the risk assessment results indicated that because the risk quotient values were ≪100%, the potential dietary risk of pyrethrins on goji berries could be negligible for Chinese consumers. These detection and field results could provide some supporting data for the determination of pyrethrin residues in other crops and the proper application and safety assessment of pyrethrins in goji plants.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Clarithromycin-containing bismuth quadruple therapy has been recommended as the first-line therapy for H pylori infection in China. However, its expensive cost and high antibiotic-related adverse reactions are always haunting us. To find a safer, more cost-effective, and high eradicative strategy for Helicobacter treatment, we investigated the efficacy of 14-day bismuth quadruple therapy and different doses of clarithromycin in the first-line treatment. METHOD: A total of 210 patients with H pylori infection were recruited and randomly assigned to half-dose clarithromycin group (esomeprazole 20 mg bid, amoxicillin 1 g bid, clarithromycin 250 mg bid, and bismuth potassium citrate 0.6 g bid) for 14 days or standard-dose clarithromycin group (esomeprazole 20 mg bid, amoxicillin 1 g bid, clarithromycin 500 mg bid, and bismuth potassium citrate 0.6 g bid) for 14 days. A 13 C-urea breath test (13 C-UBT) was performed at least 4 weeks after treatment. The eradication rate of H pylori, the incidence of side effects, and the cost-effectiveness of regimens were evaluated in this study. RESULTS: The eradication frequencies were 86.67% for both groups in the intention-to-treat analysis, while the per-protocol eradication rates were 91% vs. 91.92% (p=0.817). The incidence of adverse events was higher in standard dose group (54.21% vs. 34.29%; p=0.004), especially bitter taste symptom. There was a higher level of costs per person associated with the standard-dose group as compared with half-dose group (ï¿¥804.3 vs ï¿¥654.36). The cost-effectiveness ratio of the half dose was less than that of the standard dose (7.55 vs 9.16 CNY per percent). CONCLUSIONS: A 14-day half-dose clarithromycin-containing bismuth quadruple regimen is as effective as the standard bismuth quadruple therapy at eradicating H pylori, which is better tolerated and more economical. RESUMO

The recovery of copper (Cu0) from waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) is a great challenge as a result of its heterogeneous structural properties, with a mixture of metals, epoxy resin, and fiberglass. In this study, a three-step sequential process, including mechanochemical processing, water leaching, and recrystallization, for Cu0 recovery from WPCB powder is reported. Potassium persulfate (K2S2O8), instead of acid/alkali reagents, was employed as the sole reagent in the cupric sulfate (CuSO4) regeneration process. Complete oxidation of Cu0 in the WPCBs to copper oxide (CuO) and CuSO4 was first achieved during mechanochemical processing with K2S2O8 as the solid oxidant, and the K2S2O8 was simultaneously converted to sulfate compounds [K3H(SO4)2] via a solid-solid reaction with epoxy resin (C nH mO y) as the hydrogen donator under mechanical force. The rapid leaching of Cu species in the forms of CuO and CuSO4 was therefore easily realized with pure water as a nontoxic leaching reagent. The kinetics of the leaching process of Cu species was confirmed to follow the shrinking nucleus model controlled by solid-film diffusion. Finally, CuSO4·5H2O was successfully separated by cooling crystallization of the hot saturated solution of sulfate salt [K2Cu(SO4)2·6H2O]. An efficient conversion of Cu0 to CuSO4·5H2O product, for WPCB recycling, was therefore established.

RESUMO

For the first time, the power law characteristics of stock price jump intervals have been empirically found generally in stock markets. The classical jump-diffusion model is described as the jump-diffusion model with power law (JDMPL). An artificial stock market (ASM) is designed in which an agent's investment strategies, risk appetite, learning ability, adaptability, and dynamic changes are considered to create a dynamically changing environment. An analysis of these data packets from the ASM simulation indicates that, with the learning mechanism, the ASM reflects the kurtosis, fat-tailed distribution characteristics commonly observed in real markets. Data packets obtained from simulating the ASM for 5010 periods are incorporated into a regression analysis. Analysis results indicate that the JDMPL effectively characterizes the stock price jumps in the market. The results also support the hypothesis that the time interval of stock price jumps is consistent with the power law and indicate that the diversity and dynamic changes of agents' investment strategies are the reasons for the discontinuity in the changes of stock prices.

RESUMO

Dual-axis confocal (DAC) microscopy has been found to exhibit superior rejection of out-of-focus and multiply scattered background light compared to conventional single-axis confocal microscopy. DAC microscopes rely on the use of separated illumination and collection beam paths that focus and intersect at a single focal volume (voxel) within tissue. While it is generally recognized that the resolution and contrast of a DAC microscope depends on both the crossing angle of the DAC beams, 2θ, and the focusing numerical aperture of the individual beams, α, a detailed study to investigate these dependencies has not been performed. Contrast and resolution are considered as two main criteria to assess the performance of a point-scanned DAC microscope (DAC-PS) and a line-scanned DAC microscope (DAC-LS) as a function of θ and α. The contrast and resolution of these designs are evaluated by Monte-Carlo scattering simulations and diffraction theory calculations, respectively. These results can be used for guiding the optimal designs of DAC-PS and DAC-LS microscopes.

RESUMO

Various confocal microscope architectures have been developed for in vivo tissue imaging, including single-axis confocal (SAC) and dual-axis confocal (DAC) configurations utilizing both point-scanning (PS) and line-scanning (LS) approaches. While it is known that these design variations lead to tradeoffs in imaging performance, a quantitative comparison of the imaging performance of these configurations in highly turbid media would be of value. Here, we perform Monte Carlo simulations to evaluate the optical-sectioning capability of these various confocal microscope architectures in reflectance mode. In particular, we investigate the axial and transverse responses of these configurations to reflective targets at various depths within a homogenous scattering medium. We find that the DAC-PS configuration results in superior rejection of multiply scattered background light compared to all other configurations, followed in performance by the SAC-PS, the DAC-LS, and then the SAC-LS. Line scanning with both the DAC and SAC configurations leads to photon crosstalk between pixels. However, at shallow depths, the axial and transverse resolution of all configurations is maintained in a homogeneous scattering medium.

RESUMO

A commercial magnetic particle-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit for the insecticide chlorpyrifos [O,O-diethyl-O-(3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridyl) phosphorothioate] was evaluated for its specificity, precision, and accuracy, its susceptibility to matrix interferences in agricultural and environmental surface waters, and its comparability to a gas chromatographic/flame photometric (GC/FPD) method for the determination of organophosphorus pesticides in natural waters. Repeatability, reproducibility, and accuracy studies show that the kit satisfies current U.S. Environmental Protection Agency criteria for the assessment of analytical methods. Observable matrix effects were found to be present in all of the environmental test waters, with the slopes of calibration curves generated in each of the test matrices deviating from that of the control matrix by as much as 16%. Specificity studies indicate that the chlorpyrifos polyclonal antibody adequately differentiates the target compound from other structurally similar organophosphorus pesticides, with the exception of its methyl analogue. Cross-reactivity with chlorpyrifos-methyl was approximately 37%, while reactivity with diazinon, pyridaphenthion, diclofenthion, bromiphos-ethyl, bromiphos-methyl, pirimiphos-ethyl, and chlorpyrifos oxon ranged from 1.6 to 10.7%. Cross-reactivity with pirimiphos-methyl, 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol, diethyl phosphate, and diethyl thiophosphate was negligible (<1%). Validation of the paramagnetic particle ELISA format was accomplished using water samples from two monitoring studies that were collected, split, and analyzed directly by ELISA and by GC/FPD. Results of the two analytical methods were then compared using standard t tests, regression analysis, and differences against mean measurement (bias) plots. While the agreement between the two methods was determined to be satisfactory, ELISA exhibits consistent positive bias in environmental matrices. Several preanalysis mitigation steps were suggested that may help moderate bias, but additional study is recommended to explicate the exact factors responsible for its consistent overestimation of results.
