RESUMO

Neuromodulators in the brain act globally at many forms of synaptic plasticity, represented as metaplasticity, which is rarely considered by existing spiking (SNNs) and nonspiking artificial neural networks (ANNs). Here, we report an efficient brain-inspired computing algorithm for SNNs and ANNs, referred to here as neuromodulation-assisted credit assignment (NACA), which uses expectation signals to induce defined levels of neuromodulators to selective synapses, whereby the long-term synaptic potentiation and depression are modified in a nonlinear manner depending on the neuromodulator level. The NACA algorithm achieved high recognition accuracy with substantially reduced computational cost in learning spatial and temporal classification tasks. Notably, NACA was also verified as efficient for learning five different class continuous learning tasks with varying degrees of complexity, exhibiting a markedly mitigated catastrophic forgetting at low computational cost. Mapping synaptic weight changes showed that these benefits could be explained by the sparse and targeted synaptic modifications attributed to expectation-based global neuromodulation.

RESUMO

To help investors understand the profound impact of Taoism in society, this study systematically evaluates its impact on digital inclusive finance and its mechanisms. Based on theoretical analysis, this study makes an empirical analysis based on Chinese city-level data from 2011 to 2019, in which the core explanatory variable "Taoism" encompasses the Taoist places of religious activity in each city, and the explained variable "digital inclusive finance" is measured using the Peking University digital inclusive finance index. The results of this study show that (1) the Taoist concept of inaction requires people to put aside selfishness and prejudice, and treat others fairly, rationally, and leniently, which is conducive to the development of digital inclusive finance; (2) the dialectical wisdom of Taoism inspires positive psychological capital, which is conducive to digital and traditional technological innovations and the development of digital inclusive finance; and (3) further research indicates that Taoism encourages Chinese-listed enterprises to actively fulfill their social responsibilities by promoting the development of digital inclusive finance. This study can help global investors understand China's traditional culture and capital markets and serve as the first step in exploring Taoist economics.

Background: Rotational atherectomy (RA) is a tool for calcium modification, but there is a risk of losing the side branch in left main coronary artery (LM) bifurcation lesions, resulting in disastrous consequences. Microcatheter-protected RA with the double guiding catheter (GC) technique for severely calcified LM bifurcations has been described previously, but its safety warrants further investigation. Methods: Various sizes of coronary calcification vascular simulators were utilized to model calcified LM bifurcation lesions for RA in in vitro. The damage to the side branch protective microcatheters and guidewires was accessed after microcatheter-protected RA with the double GC technique. In clinical practice, microcatheter-protected RA with the double GC technique was carried out in two patients. Results: In vitro, none of the protective microcatheters or guidewires were completely fractured, although the majority of them were damaged to varying degrees. In clinical practice, we successfully carried out two cases of percutaneous coronary intervention for severely calcified LM bifurcation with microcatheter-protected RA using the double GC technique. Conclusion: RA of severely calcified LM bifurcation lesions may be successfully performed using microcatheter-protected RA with the double GC technique, potentially reducing the risk of side branch occlusion. Since majority of protective microcatheters or guidewires were damaged, there was still some risk, and it is recommended to use this technique only in highly selected patient population of severely calcified true (Medina 1, 1, 1) LM bifurcations.

This paper constructs an overlapping generations model, including health human capital, to investigate the impact of transportation investment on public health with population mobility. The theoretical analysis shows that there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between transportation infrastructure and population flow, which also exists between transportation and health. Health is affected by transportation from three aspects: positive output effect, negative substitution effect on public health investment, and an indirect effect through population flow. In the empirical part, considered with the infectious diseases, we found that the more intensive the traffic facilities, the greater the population flow, and therefore, the traffic facilities will have a negative impact on health. When population mortality is used to measure the level of public health, transportation improvement will significantly enhance public health with an inverted U-shaped relationship, which is consistent with the theoretical portion.

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography images are easy to misjudge because of their complexity, especially images of solitary pulmonary nodules, of which diagnosis as benign or malignant is extremely important in lung cancer treatment. Therefore, there is an urgent need for a more effective strategy in lung cancer diagnosis. In our study, we aimed to externally validate and revise the Mayo model, and a new model was established. METHODS: A total of 1450 patients from three centers with solitary pulmonary nodules who underwent surgery were included in the study and were divided into training, internal validation, and external validation sets (n = 849, 365, and 236, respectively). External verification and recalibration of the Mayo model and establishment of new logistic regression model were performed on the training set. Overall performance of each model was evaluated using area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Finally, the model validation was completed on the validation data set. RESULTS: The AUC of the Mayo model on the training set was 0.653 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.613-0.694). After re-estimation of the coefficients of all covariates included in the original Mayo model, the revised Mayo model achieved an AUC of 0.671 (95% CI: 0.635-0.706). We then developed a new model that achieved a higher AUC of 0.891 (95% CI: 0.865-0.917). It had an AUC of 0.888 (95% CI: 0.842-0.934) on the internal validation set, which was significantly higher than that of the revised Mayo model (AUC: 0.577, 95% CI: 0.509-0.646) and the Mayo model (AUC: 0.609, 95% CI, 0.544-0.675) (P < 0.001). The AUC of the new model was 0.876 (95% CI: 0.831-0.920) on the external verification set, which was higher than the corresponding value of the Mayo model (AUC: 0.705, 95% CI: 0.639-0.772) and revised Mayo model (AUC: 0.706, 95% CI: 0.640-0.772) (P < 0.001). Then the prediction model was presented as a nomogram, which is easier to generalize. CONCLUSIONS: After external verification and recalibration of the Mayo model, the results show that they are not suitable for the prediction of malignant pulmonary nodules in the Chinese population. Therefore, a new model was established by a backward stepwise process. The new model was constructed to rapidly discriminate benign from malignant pulmonary nodules, which could achieve accurate diagnosis of potential patients with lung cancer.

ABSTRACT: The systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) is an independent prognostic predictor of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The present investigation examined whether an association exists between preoperative SII value and postoperative acute kidney injury (pAKI) in HCC patients.The study included 479 hepatitis B virus (HBV)-associated HCC patients undergoing hepatectomy. The SII was calculated as P × N/L, where P, N, and L represent the counts of platelets, neutrophils, and lymphocytes in routine blood test, respectively. After propensity score matching, logistic regression analysis was used to explore independent predictors of pAKI in HCC patients.pAKI was confirmed in 51 patients (10.8%). The average SII value was higher in patients with pAKI than patients without pAKI. After multivariate logistic regression analysis, SII, history of hypertension, and tumor size, among others, were found to be predictors of pAKI. The optimal threshold value of SII for predicting pAKI was found to be 547.84 × 109/L. Multivariate analysis performed after propensity score matching confirmed that SII ≥ 547.84 × 109/L was an independent predictor of pAKI.The preoperative SII qualifies as a novel, independent predictor of pAKI in HCC patients with HBV infection who underwent hepatectomy.

OBJECTIVE: To establish the quality control and evaluation methods of Panax notoginseng on promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis effects, by determining cell index to evaluate the quality of Panax notoginseng from different habitats. METHODS: Using the real-time cell electronic analysis technology (RTCA) to examine the biological activity of specific cell-dependent cell lines on Panax notoginseng extracts. Changing trends and laws of the samples within a certain time were analyzed, and the cell index at the optimum time was determined. RESULTS: In four batches of Panax notoginseng from different habitats, cell index of Panax notoginseng from Chuxiong of Yunnan Province at the optimal time of 38 h was the highest, and the biological activity was the strongest. Cell index of Panax notoginseng from Wenshan of Yunnan Province at the optimal time of 38 h cells was the lowest, and the biological activity was the weakest. CONCLUSION: The method based on the real-time cell electronic analysis technology can initially be used in the detection of biological activity of Panax notoginseng.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of comprehensive control strategy which mainly controls the schistosomiasis infection source in Lushan County from 2007 to 2012. METHODS: The data of the schistosomiasis endemic, Oncomelania hupensis snail status, control technology, and funding were collected and analyzed statistically in the endemic villages of Lushan County from 2007 to 2012. RESULTS: The schistosome infection rate of the residents decreased from 0.04% in 2007 to 0 in 2012. The numbers of advanced schistosomiasis patients decreased from 128 in 2007 to 121 in 2012. No acute schistosomiasis patients were found. The average density of living snails decreased from 0.06 snial/0.1 m2 to 0.05 snail/0.1 m2, with the decreased rate of 16.67%, and no schistosome infected snails were found. However, the snail area increased from 15.84 hm2 in 2007 to 52.12 hm2 in 2012, with the rise rate of 229.04%. The year per capita was 200.48 yuan, the cost of the infection rate decreasing by 1% was 949,900 yuan, and the cost of living snail density decreasing by 1% was 5,698,200 yuan. CONCLUSION: The cost-effectiveness of comprehensive control strategy which mainly controls the schistosomiasis infection source is relatively good in Lushan County from 2007 to 2012.

A total of 405 households keeping cattle were surveyed by questionnaire in Yangxin County in 2008, the results showed that 215 of them (53.09%) were willing to replace cattle, 288 of them (71.11%) preferred to economic compensation, and 117 of them asked for compensation with machine.

BACKGROUND: Breast approach endoscopic thyroidectomy (BAET) allows surgeons to remove a thyroid tumor from a remote site while providing a scarless cosmetic appearance in the neck. However, seroma formation after subcutaneous dissection could lead to flap detachment, incision dehiscence, and wound infection. Chronic formation of seromas could substantially compromise the esthetic outcome of BAET. We evaluated the prevalence, risk factors, and treatments of seroma after BAET. METHODS: A total of 344 patients who underwent BAET between 2001 and 2008 at our institution were recruited; data were collected prospectively. The characteristics and outcomes of patients who developed seromas were compared with those of patients who did not. Regression analysis was used to identify the independent risk factors for seroma formation. The frequency and volume of aspirations were noted until the seroma went into remission. RESULTS: The overall postoperative prevalence of seroma formation was 2.9%. There was a significant difference in seroma formation based on age, hypertension, body mass index (BMI), and area of subcutaneous dissection space (ASDS). Percutaneous aspiration alone or combined with external compression was extremely effective. The frequency and total volume of aspirations were 1-7 and 6-120 ml, respectively. As a result of prolonged seroma formation, one patient developed an expanding pseudo-bursa that created a tumor-like effect in the anterior chest wall. CONCLUSIONS: Seroma formation was an uncommon minor complication after BAET. Four independent etiologic factors could predispose patients to postoperative seroma formation. Percutaneous aspiration appeared to be very effective. Prolonged seroma formation followed by development of a pseudo-bursa could be very problematic and could substantially impair the esthetic effect of BAET.
