Purpose: Although eating is imperative for survival, few comprehensive methods have been developed to assess freely moving nonhuman primates' eating behavior. In the current study, we distinguished eating behavior into appetitive and consummatory phases and developed nine indices to study them using manual and deep learning-based (DeepLabCut) techniques. Method: The indices were utilized to three rhesus macaques by different palatability and hunger levels to validate their utility. To execute the experiment, we designed the eating behavior cage and manufactured the artificial food. The total number of trials was 3, with 1 trial conducted using natural food and 2 trials using artificial food. Result: As a result, the indices of highest utility for hunger effect were approach frequency and consummatory duration. Appetitive composite score and consummatory duration showed the highest utility for palatability effect. To elucidate the effects of hunger and palatability, we developed 2D visualization plots based on manual indices. These 2D visualization methods could intuitively depict the palatability perception and hunger internal state. Furthermore, the developed deep learning-based analysis proved accurate and comparable with manual analysis. When comparing the time required for analysis, deep learning-based analysis was 24-times faster than manual analysis. Moreover, temporal and spatial dynamics were visualized via manual and deep learning-based analysis. Based on temporal dynamics analysis, the patterns were classified into four categories: early decline, steady decline, mid-peak with early incline, and late decline. Heatmap of spatial dynamics and trajectory-related visualization could elucidate a consumption posture and a higher spatial occupancy of food zone in hunger and with palatable food. Discussion: Collectively, this study describes a newly developed and validated multi-phase method for assessing freely moving nonhuman primate eating behavior using manual and deep learning-based analyses. These effective tools will prove valuable in food reward (palatability effect) and homeostasis (hunger effect) research.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be associated with eating problems. However, currently, there is a lack of established guidelines for assessing and addressing eating behaviors in individuals with ASD. This gap in research exists due to the challenges associated with using traditional assessment methods, which may lead to discrepancies in responses and unintentional potential biases from caregivers. In this review, we provided a comprehensive overview of various eating behaviors commonly observed in individuals with ASD. These behaviors include 1) food neophobia, 2) selective eating, 3) binge eating, 4) food avoidance, 5) chewing and swallowing problems, 6) pica, 7) rumination, 8) rituals, and 9) problematic behaviors. Furthermore, we provide a perspective of utilizing digital tools: 1) augmentative and alternative communication; 2) ecological momentary assessment; and 3) video analysis, behavioral analysis, and facial expression analysis. This review explores existing assessment methods and suggests novel assessment aiding together.

Background and Objectives: Unstable thoracolumbar burst fractures require surgical management as they can result in neurological deficits if left untreated. This study aimed to evaluate whether a new bone scan scoring system could accurately assess instability in thoracolumbar burst fractures. Materials and Methods: Fifty-two patients with thoracolumbar burst fractures who underwent bone scans and magnetic resonance imaging prior to surgery between January 2015 and August 2017 at Ulsan University Hospital were selected for inclusion. Instability was determined by clinical assessment and imaging, and the Thoracolumbar Injury Classification and Severity score was determined. Bone scans were visually evaluated using a new bone scan scoring system. Bone scan findings of vertebral body (BB) and posterior column (BP) were scored separately and were summed to produce BTS {BTS (total score) = BB (body score, 5 points) + BP (posterior score, 2 points)}. The diagnostic performance of the scoring system for identifying unstable then thoracolumbar burst fractures were assessed. Results: Of the 52 thoracolumbar burst fractures, 34 (65.4%) were unstable and 31 (59.6%) had a Thoracolumbar Injury Classification and Severity score ≥ 5. The diagnostic performance of using BTS ≥ 4 to identify unstable thoracolumbar burst fractures and those with a Thoracolumbar Injury Classification and Severity score ≥ 5 was as follows: sensitivity, 61.8% and 58.1%; specificity, 94.4% and 81.0%; positive predictive value, 95.5% and 81.8%; and negative predictive value, 56.7% and 56.7%, respectively. Conclusions: The proposed bone scan scoring system has a high specificity and positive predictive value for identifying thoracolumbar burst fractures that are unstable or have a Thoracolumbar Injury Classification and Severity score ≥ 5. This scoring system may help to inform decisions regarding surgical management.

What drives us to eat? It is one of the most fundamental questions in the obesity research field which have been investigated for centuries. Numerous novel in vivo technologies in the neuroscience field allows us to reevaluate the multiple components and phases of food-related behaviors. Focused on the cognitive, executive, behavioral and temporal aspects, food-related behaviors can be distinguished into appetitive phase (food craving→food seeking) and consummatory phase (food consumption). Food craving phase is an internal state or stage in which the animal has the motivation to eat the food but there is no actual food specific behaviors or actions. Food seeking phase entails repeated behaviors with a food searching purpose until the animal discovers the food (or food-related cue) and the approach behavior stage after the discovery of food. Food consumption phase is the step that the animal grabs, chews and intake the food. This review will specifically focus on characteristics and evaluation methods for each phase of food-related behavior in rodent, non-human primates and human.

PURPOSE: Left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction (EF) is an important parameter for assessing cardiac systolic function and predicting prognosis in patients with cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of assessing LVEF by Tl-201 hybrid myocardial single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)/CT using two attenuation correction methods in patients with angina pectoris. METHODS: A total of 339 patients with angina pectoris (62.8 ± 12.9 years, male:female = 206:133) were analyzed. All patients underwent Tl-201 myocardial SPECT/CT and transthoracic two-dimensional (2D) echocardiograph. We compared LVEF assessed by SPECT/CT using two attenuation correction methods: CT-based attenuation correction (CTAC) and non-attenuation correction (non-AC) methods and 2D echocardiography. RESULTS: LVEF assessed by either of the two attenuation correction techniques and 2D echocardiography showed moderate correlation in all patients with angina pectoris (r = 0.487 for CTAC and r = 0.473 for non-AC, p < 0.001). Results were similar in the subgroup of patients with perfusion abnormalities on myocardial SPECT/CT images. Overall diagnostic performances were similar for the CTAC and non-AC methods for evaluating normal and decreased LVEF by myocardial SPECT/CT. CONCLUSION: LVEF measured by the CTAC method of Tl-201-gated myocardial SPECT/CT was comparable with the conventional non-AC method in patients with angina pectoris and in the subgroup of patients with perfusion abnormality. Tl-201-gated myocardial hybrid SPECT/CT can be a reliable tool in the assessment of LVEF in clinic.

BACKGROUND: Fracture-risk assessment tool (FRAX) using just clinical risk factors of osteoporosis has been developed to estimate individual risk of osteoporotic fractures. We developed prediction model of fracture risk using bone mineral density (BMD) as well as clinical risk factors in Korean, and assessed the validity of the final model. METHODS: To develop and validate an osteoporotic FRAX, a total of 768 Korean men and women aged 50 to 90 years were followed for 7 years in a community-based cohort study. BMD as well as clinical risk factors for osteoporotic fracture including age, sex, body mass index, history of fragility fracture, family history of fracture, smoking status, alcohol intake, use of oral glucocorticoid, rheumatoid arthritis, and other causes of secondary osteoporosis were assessed biannually. RESULTS: During the follow-up period, 86 osteoporotic fractures identified (36 in men and 50 in women). The developed prediction models showed high discriminatory power and had goodness of fit. CONCLUSIONS: The developed a Korean specific prediction model for osteoporotic fractures can be easily used as a screening tool to identify individual with high risk of osteoporotic fracture. Further studies for validation are required to confirm the clinical feasibility in general Korean population.

BACKGROUND: The effect of antihypertensives on fracture has important clinical implications, since antihypertensives are frequently prescribed with lifelong exposure. This study aimed to compare risk of fracture between antihypertensive medication classes and non-users among adults. METHODS: Nationwide claim data from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2011 were analyzed. Among 8,315,709 subjects with antihypertensive prescriptions in nationwide medical claim database in South Korea, 528,522 subjects, who initiated single-drug antihypertensives or non-users, were analyzed. Subjects were classified as non-user, alpha-blocker (AB), angiotensin-converting-enzyme-inhibitor (ACEI), angiotensin-receptor-blocker (ARB), beta-blocker (BB), calcium-channel-blocker (CCB), and diuretic users. Subjects with combination antihypertensive medications were excluded. RESULTS: A total of 16,805 fracture outcomes were observed during mean follow-up duration of 1.9 years. Fracture rate per 10,000 person-years varied significantly across type of antihypertensives, with ARB having the lowest rate (152.7, 95% confidence interval (CI) 145.4-160.4), and AB having the highest rate (323.7, 95% CI 237.4-441.4). Non-users had fracture rates (152.2, 95% CI 148.7-155.7) similar to ARB users. In models adjusting for age, gender, comorbidity score, diagnosis of diabetes, diagnosis of osteoporosis, osteoporosis treatment, and osteoporosis related diseases, AB users (adjusted hazard ratio (aHR)=2.26), ACEI users (aHR=1.68), diuretic users (aHR=1.45), CCB users (aHR=1.23), and BB users (aHR=1.15) showed significantly increased risk of fractures compared with non-users (P<0.05). Only the fracture risk of ARB users (aHR=1.00, 95% CI 0.95-1.05) was not significantly different from the non-users. CONCLUSIONS: The use of antihypertensives except for ARB is associated with increased risk of fracture, with ACEI and AB having higher risk among hypertensive adults.

We evaluated the number of osteoporosis patients under treatment and secular trends in 2005-2008 in South Korea. We investigated nationwide data regarding the number of osteoporosis patients under treatment in South Korea using data from the Health Insurance Review and Assesment Service (HIRA), which includes nationwide information [corrected]. Reimbursement records from the HIRA database between 1 January 2004 and 31 December 2008 were investigated. Patients aged ≥30 years old with osteoporosis were identified based on a study-defined algorithm using prescription data and diagnostic codes. During the study periods, the number of patients receiving medical treatment related to osteoporosis increased from 1,034,399 to 1,392,189 for women and from 120,496 to 171,902 for men. The calculated proportion of osteoporosis patients under treatment in the general population over 50 years of age was 6.1% for men and 33.3% for women, and in the general population over 30 years of age was 2.7% for men and 16.6% for woman. More than 40% of patients (59.1% for women; 41.2% for men) were treated with medication indicated only for osteoporosis. About 4-7% of osteoporosis patients had a past medical history suggesting a secondary cause of osteoporosis. More than 80% of all osteoporosis patients were women older than 50 years, reflecting the pronounced burden of osteoporosis among postmenopausal women. This study demonstrated a substantial increasing trend in medical claims related to osteoporosis in 2005-2008 among adults in Korea and a pronounced burden of osteoporosis among postmenopausal women.
