Modern high-resolution volumetric tomography, commonly known as cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), is one of the most innovative imaging techniques which can provide views of anatomical structures not attainable by conventional techniques. Magnetic field LED therapy is a physical therapy method, combining the effects of the Extremely Low Frequency-Electromagnetic Field (ELF-EMF) and high-power light radiation emitted by Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). The method has been widely applied in the treatment and rehabilitation of complications of many medical conditions, including in dentistry. The aim of this study was to use CBCT to assess the effectiveness of the simultaneous use of electromagnetic field and LED light in the physical therapy of paranasal sinusitis. Treatments employing the electromagnetic field combined with LED light were administered to a 39-year-old female outpatient of the physiotherapy ward for rehabilitation therapy of paranasal sinusitis. Normal sinus pneumatization was restored almost completely. Reduction in the swelling of the sinus mucosa was so significant that even the pneumatization of the ethmoid bulla was restored. Physical therapy with the simultaneous use of ELF-EMF and LED light was found to be effective in the rehabilitation of the patient with paranasal sinusitis. Positive effects of the treatment were confirmed by CBCT findings.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in the course of atherosclerosis are one of the most critical public health problems in the world. Endothelial cells synthesize numerous biologically active substances involved in regulating the functions of the cardiovascular system. Endothelial dysfunction is an essential element in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Thus, the assessment of endothelial function in people without overt CVD allows for a more accurate estimate of the risk of developing CVD and cardiovascular events. The assessment of endothelial function is primarily used in scientific research, and to a lesser extent in clinical practice. Among the tools for assessing endothelial function, we can distinguish biochemical and physical methods, while physical methods can be divided into invasive and non-invasive methods. Flow-mediated dilation (FMD) is based on the ultrasound assessment of changes in the diameter of the brachial artery as a result of increased blood flow. FMD is a non-invasive, safe, and repeatable test, but it must be performed by qualified and experienced medical staff. The purpose of this paper is to present the literature review results on the assessment of endothelial function using the FMD method, including its methodology, applications in clinical practice and research, limitations, and future perspectives.

Metabolic syndrome (MS) is not a single disease but a cluster of metabolic disorders associated with increased risk for development of diabetes mellitus and its complications. Currently, the definition of MS published in 2009 is widely used, but there are more versions of the diagnostic criteria, making it difficult to conduct scientific discourse in this area. Increased arterial stiffness (AS) can predict the development of cardiovascular disease both in the general population and in patients with MS. Pulse wave velocity (PWV), as a standard method to assess AS, may point out subclinical organ damage in patients with hypertension. The decrease in PWV level during antihypertensive therapy can identify a group of patients with better outcomes independently of their reduction in blood pressure. The adverse effect of metabolic disturbances on arterial function can be offset by an adequate program of exercises, which includes mainly aerobic physical training. Non-insulin-based insulin resistance index can predict AS due to a strong positive correlation with PWV. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of the review of the literature concerning the relationship between MS and its components, and AS assessed by PWV, including clinical usefulness of PWV measurement in patients with MS and its components.

The ability to detect and diagnose bladder cancer early and precisely is crucial for effective treatment. The aim of this study is to assess the utility of optical biopsy performed with autofluorescence cystoscopy (AFC) using the Onco-LIFE system with numerical color values (NCVs) and by ALA/PDD. Histopathological examination of material obtained during TURBT and/or biopsy of the bladder was carried out in 251 patients. In the case of 35 patients, the selection of the specimen collected for histopathological examination was based using ALA/PDD. In the remaining 216 patients, tissue was collected based on the findings of AFC with NCV. Using AFC, the observed NCV ranged from 0 to 3.86; the highest mean NCV was observed in neoplastic muscle invasive lesions and was equal to 3.18. Furthermore, non-muscle invasive tumors were characterized by a mean NCV equal to 1.54. Tissue with inflammation, metaplasia, and healthy tissue demonstrated significantly lower mean NCV values. The presence of a muscle-invasive tumor increased the NCV by approximately 2.86 compared to healthy tissue. The rates of postoperative complications depend on the examining operator and are observed more often, as much as 65.7 % during ALA/PDD. AFC with NCV using the Onco-LIFE system, as well as ALA/PDD are helpful tools for early diagnosis of bladder precancerous and cancer lesions and for performing targeted biopsies. A significant correlation was found between lesion NCV index and the grade of dysplasia or tumor malignancy. Tissue with inflammation, metaplasia, and healthy tissue demonstrated significantly lower mean NCV values. AFE with NCV have a significantly higher sensitivity than specificity. Low rates of postoperative complications are correlated to the experience of the endoscopist and with AFE/NCV in comparison of ALA/PDD.

BACKGROUND: Photodynamic therapy is believed to be a promising treatment for Candida infections. This study evaluated the efficacy of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) using the 635 nm diode laser light and toluidine blue (TB) in the elimination of selected Candida species cultured on acrylic surface. METHODS: 108 acrylic plates (Methyl Methacrylate Polymer, routinely used for the production of prosthetic dentures) were placed in three sterile Petri dishes and poured with prepared suspensions of Candida strains: C. albicans, C. glabrata, and C. krusei. After all procedures of fungi incubation, fungal biofilm was visible on the plates' surfaces. The acrylic plates were divided into nine study groups (B) and nine control groups (K) for further experiments. In the study groups, the acrylic plates with fungal biofilm were immersed in TB and afterwards laser irradiation was applicated with different exposure parameters (groups: B1 - 400 mW, 24 J/cm2, 30 s; B2 - 300 mW, 18 J/cm2, 30 s; B3 - 200 mW, 12 J/cm2, 30 s) separately for each Candida species. The control groups contained following parameters: no exposure to laser light or TB, treatment only with TB without laser irradiation, or only laser irradiation without previous immersion in TB. Calculations of colony forming units (CFUs) were conducted by using aCOlyte (Synbiosis). Differences in CFUs were analyzed by the Wilcoxon test. RESULTS: In all study groups, the reduction in CFUs was statistically significant. The differences in CFUs before and after intervention were insignificant. The K3 C.a. control group showed a statistical reduction of Candida albicans after laser irradiation. CONCLUSION: Our study confirmed the efficacy of aPDT against C. albicans, C. glabrata and C. krusei being dependent on the laser parameters and the type of fungus. The advantage of this study is the validation of aPDT effectiveness in in vitro studies to transpose this data into future clinical trials using photodynamic therapy in the treatment of oral candidiasis.
