RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Prior studies have suggested that the chronic inflammatory response has an important role in the pathophysiology of slow coronary flow phenomenon (SCFP). However, data are scarce regarding the role of plasma fibrinogen-to-albumin ratio (PFAR) in patients having SCFP without obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD). In this study, we investigated the relationship between PFAR and the presence of SCFP in patients without obstructive CAD. METHODS: From January 2021 to January 2023, we consecutively recruited 1085 patients without obstructive CAD according to the diagnostic and exclusion criteria. In total, SCFP was diagnosed in 70 patients. A 1:2 age-matched case-control study was then conducted using comparators without SCFP. Ultimately, this study enrolled 70 patients with angiographically normal coronary arteries and SCFP, along with 140 comparators with angiographically normal coronary arteries and normal coronary flow. Plasma fibrinogen and albumin levels were measured, and the PFAR was then calculated for each patient. RESULTS: PFARs were significantly greater in the SCFP group than in the comparators with normal coronary flow (82.8 ± 15.4 vs 73.1 ± 19.5, p < 0.001). PFAR increased with increasing numbers of vessels affected by SCFP. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that PFAR was an independent predictor of SCFP (odds ratio: 1.818, p = 0.015). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis indicated that PFAR showed a better predictive value of SCFP than fibrinogen or albumin, although not significantly (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: PFAR is an independent predictor of SCFP in patients without obstructive CAD. PAFR could improve the predictive value of SFCP than albumin or fibrinogen alone, but not significantly.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Pathological myopia (PM) is a leading cause of blindness worldwide. We aimed to evaluate microvascular and chorioretinal changes in different stages of myopia with wide-field (WF) swept-source (SS) optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). METHODS: This prospective cross-sectional observational study included 186 eyes of 122 patients who had undergone imaging between November 2018 and October 2020. Vessel density (VD) and vessel skeletonised density (VSD) of superficial capillary plexus, deep capillary plexus and whole retina, as well as foveal avascular zone parameters, retinal thickness (RT) and choroidal thickness (CT), were calculated. RESULTS: This study evaluated 75 eyes of 48 patients with high myopia (HM), 43 eyes of 31 patients with mild to moderate myopia and 68 eyes of 53 age-matched controls. Controlling for age and the presence of systemic hypertension, we found that HM was associated with decrease in VD and VSD in all layers on 12×12 mm² scans. Furthermore, HM was associated with a VD and VSD decrease in every Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study grid, with a larger decrease temporally (ßVD=-0.39, ßVSD=-10.25, p<0.01). HM was associated with decreased RT and CT. Reduction in RT was outside the macular region, while reduction in CT was in the macular region. CONCLUSION: Using WF SS-OCTA, we identified reduction in microvasculature and structural changes associated with myopia. Decrease in VD and VSD was greater in the temporal quadrant, and reductions in RT and CT were uneven across the retina. Further work may help identify risk factors for the progression of PM and associated vision-threatening complications.

RESUMO

Objective: To evaluate the reporting quality of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of acupuncture for labor pain, and to explore relevant factors for facilitating reporting transparency and integrity for future RCTs. Method: Eight Chinese and English databases were systematically searched from their inception until August 31, 2021. General characteristics and methodological quality of the included reports were evaluated based on the CONSORT statement and the STRICTA guidelines. Descriptive statistical analysis was performed. Cohen's κ-statistics were calculated to assess the agreement of all items between two reviewers. Results: A total of 84 RCTs were included. Based on the CONSORT statement, a positive reporting rate (greater than 80%) was evident for the items "trial design" "participants" "intervention" "outcomes" "numbers analyzed" and "generalizability". The quality of reporting for the items "randomized in the title or abstract" "sample size" "allocation concealment" "implementation" "blinding" "recruitment" "ancillary analyses" "harms" "interpretation" "registration" and "protocol" was poor with positive rates less than 10%. Based on the STRICTA guidelines, the items "extent to which treatment varied" "number of needle insertions per subject per session" and "control or comparator interventions" had poor reporting quality with positive rates of less than 10%. Substantial agreement was observed for most items and excellent agreement for some items. Conclusion: The reporting quality of RCTs of acupuncture for labor pain is suboptimal generally. Rigorous adherence to the CONSORT statement and the STRICTA guidelines should be emphasized in future studies to improve the quality of acupuncture RCT reports.

RESUMO

Inhalation is the most frequent route and the lung is the primary damaged organ for human exposure to benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, and styrene (BTEXS). However, there is limited information on the risk and dose-effect of the BTEXS mixture on pulmonary function, particularly the overall effect. We conducted a cross-sectional study in a petrochemical plant in southern China. Spirometry and cumulative exposure dose (CED) of BTEXS were used to measure lung function and exposure levels for 635 workers in 2020, respectively. Forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) were tested and interpreted as percentages to predicted values [FVC or FEV1% predicted], and FEV1 to FVC ratio [FEV1/FVC (%)]. We found the reduction in FVC% predicted and the risk of lung ventilation dysfunction (LVD) and its two subtypes (mixed and restrictive ventilation dysfunction, MVD, and MVD) were significantly associated with BTEXS individuals. In addition, pulmonary function damage associated with BTEXS was modified by the smoking status and age. Generalized weighted quantile sum (gWQS) regressions were used to estimate the overall dose-effect on lung function damage induced by the BTEXS mixture. Our results show wqs, an index of weighted quartiles for BTEXS, was potentially associated with the reduction in FVC and FEV1% predicted with the coefficients [95% confidence intervals (CI)] between -1.136 (-2.202, -0.070) and -1.230 (-2.265, -0.195). Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% CIs for the wqs index of LVD, MVD, and RVD were 1.362 (1.129, 1.594), 1.323 (1.084, 1.562), and 1.394 (1.096, 1.692), respectively. Furthermore, xylene, benzene, and toluene in the BTEXS mixture potentially contribute to the development of lung function impairment. Our novel findings demonstrated the dose-response relationships between pulmonary function impairment and the BTEXS mixture and disclosed the potential key pollutants in the BTEXS mixture.

RESUMO

Research using whole slide images (WSIs) of histopathology slides has increased exponentially over recent years. Glass slides from retrospective cohorts, some with patient follow-up data are digitised for the development and validation of artificial intelligence (AI) tools. Such resources, therefore, become very important, with the need to ensure that their quality is of the standard necessary for downstream AI development. However, manual quality control of large cohorts of WSIs by visual assessment is unfeasible, and whilst quality control AI algorithms exist, these focus on bespoke aspects of image quality, e.g. focus, or use traditional machine-learning methods, which are unable to classify the range of potential image artefacts that should be considered. In this study, we have trained and validated a multi-task deep neural network to automate the process of quality control of a large retrospective cohort of prostate cases from which glass slides have been scanned several years after production, to determine both the usability of the images at the diagnostic level (considered in this study to be the minimal standard for research) and the common image artefacts present. Using a two-layer approach, quality overlays of WSIs were generated from a quality assessment (QA) undertaken at patch-level at [Formula: see text] magnification. From these quality overlays the slide-level quality scores were predicted and then compared to those generated by three specialist urological pathologists, with a Pearson correlation of 0.89 for overall 'usability' (at a diagnostic level), and 0.87 and 0.82 for focus and H&E staining quality scores respectively. To demonstrate its wider potential utility, we subsequently applied our QA pipeline to the TCGA prostate cancer cohort and to a colorectal cancer cohort, for comparison. Our model, designated as PathProfiler, indicates comparable predicted usability of images from the cohorts assessed (86-90% of WSIs predicted to be usable), and perhaps more significantly is able to predict WSIs that could benefit from an intervention such as re-scanning or re-staining for quality improvement. We have shown in this study that AI can be used to automate the process of quality control of large retrospective WSI cohorts to maximise their utility for research.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: On 1 February 2016, the World Health Organization declared Zika transmission a public health emergency of international concern. Monitoring and responding to community awareness, concern, and possible knowledge gaps are critical during public health emergencies. Here, we describe the review and analysis of micro-blogs posted on Sina-Weibo, China's largest social media platform, to develop and disseminate a Zika virus education campaign. METHODS: We used CYYUN Voice Express' Weibo Spider tool and the search terms of "Zhaika" OR "Zika" OR "Zikv" to capture microblogs about Zika virus retrospectively from February 1 to December 31, 2016 and prospectively from June 1 to November 15, 2017. We described microblogs meeting our inclusion criteria by month and Zika virus outbreaks in Asia and by source (e.g., government agency, individual, or other). We identified common misleading or inaccurate content authored by individual micro-bloggers (i.e., not supported by available scientific evidence) through a qualitative review. We used this information to develop and disseminate health awareness material about the Zika virus through China CDC's 12320 Health Hotline Weibo account. An online survey was conducted to obtain feedback on the material. RESULTS: We captured 15,888 microblogs meeting our inclusion criteria. Zika-related microblogs peaked in September 2016, corresponding to news reports about the Zika outbreak in Singapore (August to November 2016). Most microblogs (12,994 [82%]) were authored by individual users, followed by media agencies (842 [5%]), businesses (829 [5%]), international organizations (370 [2%]), and Chinese government agencies (235 [1%]). Relevant microblogs primarily focused on clinical symptoms and health risks, modes of transmission, and actions taken by individuals to prevent infection and seek health care. Incorrect and/or mis-leading information from individual users concentrated on modes of transmission and possible treatments. The microblog "#Zika is that far and this close" health campaign was posted on Sina-Weibo and Baidu (Internet search engine in China) on September 18, 2016. Younger respondents (p-value = 0.01), and those with at least a college education (p-value = 0.03), were more likely than other respondents to consider the online campaign reliable and trustworthy. CONCLUSION: Routine review of Sina-Weibo and other social media platforms could enhance the ability of public health staff to effectively respond to community concerns and awareness during public health emergencies. Advancements of social media monitoring tools and staff training could help to promote health awareness during emergencies by directly addressing public perceptions and concerns. Various approaches may be needed to reach different at-risk populations, particularly older and less educated populations who may prefer more traditional modes of communication.

RESUMO

CONTEXT: The current clinical methods for detecting skeletal muscle complications of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are invasive and insensitive. There is an urgent need for noninvasive assessment of skeletal muscle microstructure changes during the disease progression and treatment to assist the clinical management. OBJECTIVE: This work aimed to investigate the T2DM caused changes in the fast-twitch tibialis anterior (TA) and slow-twitch soleus (SOL) skeletal muscles using T1ρ magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS: This cross-sectional study took place from December 2014 to December 2020 at Zhongda Hospital Southeast University. A total of 26 new-onset and 15 long-term T2DM patients were enrolled, with the addition of 20 young and 13 older healthy volunteers as age-matched controls. T1ρ relaxation times of SOL and TA muscles in different groups were measured. Parametric and nonparametric tests were used to analyze the relationship between the T1ρ values in SOL and TA muscles and the length of illness, level of fasting blood glucose, and status of homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). RESULTS: T1ρ relaxation times of SOL and TA muscles both of new-onset and long-term T2DM patients were significantly higher than those of the young (P < .01, P < .05) and older healthy controls (P < .05, P < .01). Positive correlations were observed between the T1ρ relaxation times of the TA or SOL and the duration of T2DM (R2 = 0.420, R2 = 0.326), the level of fasting blood glucose (R2 = 0.253, R2 = 0.071) and HOMA-IR (R2 = 0.232, R2 = 0.414). CONCLUSION: Quantitative MRI measurement of T1ρ provides a noninvasive tool to assess T2DM-induced changes in the skeletal muscles of T2DM patients.

RESUMO

The information propagation of emergencies in social networks is often accompanied by the dissemination of the topic and emotion. As a virtual sensor of public emergencies, social networks have been widely used in data mining, knowledge discovery, and machine learning. From the perspective of network, this study aims to explore the topic and emotion propagation mechanism, as well as the interaction and communication relations of the public in social networks under four types of emergencies, including public health events, accidents and disasters, social security events, and natural disasters. Event topics were identified by Word2vec and K-means clustering. The biLSTM model was used to identify emotion in posts. The propagation maps of topic and emotion were presented visually on the network, and the synergistic relationship between topic and emotion propagation as well as the communication characteristics of multiple subjects were analyzed. The results show that there were similarities and differences in the propagation mechanism of topic and emotion in different types of emergencies. There was a positive correlation between topic and emotion of different types of users in social networks in emergencies. Users with a high level of topic influence were often accompanied by a high level of emotion appeal.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the correlative factors of vision regression after Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) surgery from the perspective of binocular vision and to develop a predictive model for the refractive change over the long term. METHODS: This was a prospective study of 30 subjects (60 implants), who underwent ICL surgery at Guangdong General Hospital. Corrected distance visual acuity, uncorrected distance visual acuity, spherical equivalent (SE), axial length and binocular examination using virtual reality were analyzed before, 1 month and 1 year after the surgery. RESULTS: Mean SE was (-12.01 ± 0.86) D preoperatively, (-0.44 ± 0.13)D 1 month postoperatively and (-0.97 ± 0.15)D 1 year postoperatively. The average regression 1 year postoperatively (-0.53 ± 0.25D of SE) was significant (P = 0.01). Mean axial length at the base line and 1 year after the surgery was (28.35 ± 0.39) mm and (28.91 ± 0.57) mm. The regression was correlated with the binocular equilibrium difference (r = 0.553, P = 0.002), and the degree of perceptual eye position shift, especially the horizontal shift (r = -0.620, P = 0.000). The important variables relevant to myopic regression were preoperative horizontal perceptual eye position shift (B = -0.007, P = 0.001) and binocular equilibrium difference (B = 0.146, P = 0.012). CONCLUSION: Perceptual eye position deviation and the binocular equilibrium difference could cause binocular gazing instability, and the unstable retinal image created a 'micro retinal-defocus phenomena', leading to an elongation of the axial length and resulting in myopic regression after ICL surgery.

RESUMO

Aim: To assess the cost-effectiveness of standard utilization of zoledronic acid (ZA) relative to real-world utilization of ZA for bone metastasis (BM) in Chinese patients with advanced lung cancer. Materials & methods: A decision analytic model was constructed to simulate health benefits and medical costs associated with standard and real-world utilization of ZA for BM in Chinese patients with advanced lung cancer. Results: Compared with real-world utilization of ZA, standard utilization of ZA reduced cumulative risk of skeletal-related events (45.7 vs 63.6%), increased quality-adjusted life years (0.673 vs 0.626 QALY) and saved cumulated medical costs (¥343,163 vs ¥376,943). Conclusion: Standard utilization of ZA dominated real-world utilization of ZA for BM in Chinese patients with advanced lung cancer from cost-effectiveness perspective.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) has a defined role in the genesis and development of atherosclerosis, however, whether it is related to severity of neurological deficits is rarely reported. The aim of our study was to investigate the potential association between oxLDL and the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score among patients with acute ischemic stroke. METHODS: Between January 2014 and October 2014, we recruited 4111 patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS), who were admitted within 7 days-43 hospitals in China, and participated in the SOS-Stroke Study. We collected detailed clinical data and then tested the relationship between oxLDL and the NIHSS score using a multivariate linear regression analysis. RESULTS: After adjusting for age, gender, ethnicity, marriage and other confounding variables, the elevated NIHSS score was significantly associated with increased oxLDL levels, and each 1-µg/dL elevation in oxLDL concentration resulted in an increase of 0.027 in the NIHSS score. CONCLUSIONS: A positive correlation was found between plasma levels of oxLDL and the NIHSS score in patients with acute ischemic stroke. Higher plasma levels of oxLDL potentially suggest a worse prognosis in AIS patients.

RESUMO

The sodium taurocholate cotransporting polypeptide (NTCP) encoded by SLC10A1 was recently demonstrated to be a functional receptor for hepatitis B virus (HBV). The role of SLC10A1 polymorphisms, particularly the Ser267Phe variant (rs2296651) in exon 4, has been frequently investigated in regard to risk of persistent HBV infection. However, these investigations have generated conflicting results. To examine whether common genetic variation at the SLC10A1 locus is associated with risk of persistent HBV infection, haplotype-tagging and imputed single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were assessed in two case-control sample sets, totally including 2,550 cases (persistently HBV infected subjects, PIs) and 2,124 controls (spontaneously recovered subjects, SRs) of Southern Chinese ancestry. To test whether rare or subpolymorphic SLC10A1 variants are associated with disease risk, the gene's exons in 244 cases were sequenced. Overall, we found neither SNPs nor haplotypes of SLC10A1 showed significant association in the two sample sets. Furthermore, no significant associations of rare variants or copy number variation covering SLC10A1 were observed. Finally, expression quantitative trait locus analyses revealed that SNPs potentially affecting SLC10A1 expression also showed no significant associations. We conclude that genetic variation at the SLC10A1 locus is not likely a major risk factor of persistent HBV infection among Southern Chinese.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Unwillingness to expend more effort to pursue high value rewards has been associated with motivational anhedonia in schizophrenia (SCZ) and abnormal dopamine activity in the nucleus accumbens (NAcc). The authors hypothesized that dysfunction of the NAcc and the associated forebrain regions are involved in the impaired effort expenditure decision-making of SCZ. METHOD: A 2 (reward magnitude: low vs. high) × 3 (probability: 20% vs. 50% vs. 80%) event-related fMRI design in the effort-expenditure for reward task (EEfRT) was used to examine the neural response of 23 SCZ patients and 23 demographically matched control participants when the participants made effort expenditure decisions to pursue uncertain rewards. RESULTS: SCZ patients were significantly less likely to expend high level of effort in the medium (50%) and high (80%) probability conditions than healthy controls. The neural response in the NAcc, the posterior cingulate gyrus and the left medial frontal gyrus in SCZ patients were weaker than healthy controls and did not linearly increase with an increase in reward magnitude and probability. Moreover, NAcc activity was positively correlated with the willingness to expend high-level effort and concrete consummatory pleasure experience. CONCLUSION: NAcc and posterior cingulate dysfunctions in SCZ patients may be involved in their impaired effort expenditure decision-making. (PsycINFO Database Record

RESUMO

Methods evaluating person fit for cognitive diagnostic assessment are an important area of research because failing to detect misfitting responses can lead to the misinterpretation of students' attribute profiles, which may result in faulty remediation decisions. This article aims to examine ways of detecting person misfit for cognitive diagnostic assessments. The authors first investigated whether the well-known lz statistic, developed under the framework of item response theory, can be extended for use in the context of cognitive diagnostic models. The authors also introduce a new person fit statistic, response conformity index (RCI), developed for detecting misfitting response patterns for cognitive diagnostic assessments. The authors conduct both simulation and real data studies to compare the detection rates of lz and our new statistic.

RESUMO

Optical fiber technology has significantly bolstered the growth of photonics applications in basic life sciences research and in biomedical diagnosis, therapy, monitoring, and surgery. The unique operational characteristics of diverse fibers have been exploited to realize advanced biomedical functions in areas such as illumination, imaging, minimally invasive surgery, tissue ablation, biological sensing, and tissue diagnosis. This review paper provides the necessary background to understand how optical fibers function, to describe the various categories of available fibers, and to illustrate how specific fibers are used for selected biomedical photonics applications. Research articles and vendor data sheets were consulted to describe the operational characteristics of conventional and specialty multimode and single-mode solid-core fibers, double-clad fibers, hard-clad silica fibers, conventional hollow-core fibers, photonic crystal fibers, polymer optical fibers, side-emitting and side-firing fibers, middle-infrared fibers, and optical fiber bundles. Representative applications from the recent literature illustrate how various fibers can be utilized in a wide range of biomedical disciplines. In addition to helping researchers refine current experimental setups, the material in this review paper will help conceptualize and develop emerging optical fiber-based diagnostic and analysis tools.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of married women's gender equity awareness on use of reproductive healthcare services in rural China. METHODS: The questionnaire-based study recruited 1500 married women who were aged 15-49years, had at least 1 pregnancy, and were living in rural Gansu, Qinghai, Shanxi, or Xinjiang, China, between October and December 2010. "Gender equity awareness" was quantified by responses to 7 statements, graded in accordance with a system scoring the strength of overall belief (≥19, strong; 15-18, moderate; and ≤14, weak). RESULTS: Only 383 women (26.3%) demonstrated high gender equity awareness. The percentage of women who received consistent prenatal care was highest in the group scoring 15 points or more (P<0.001); the percentage of women with hospital delivery and gynecologic examination (P<0.001) was highest in the group scoring 19 points or more; and the percentage of women with reproductive tract infections was highest in the group with the lowest scores (P<0.001). CONCLUSION: Women's gender equity awareness is not strong in rural midwest China. There was a positive correlation between gender equity awareness and use of reproductive healthcare services. There should be an emphasis on various activities to educate women so that they can fully access reproductive healthcare.

RESUMO

In this study, we proposed to use the nonparametric bootstrap procedure to construct the confidence interval for the mean correlation r corrected for Case IV range restriction in meta-analysis (i.e., ; Hunter, Schmidt, & Le, 2006). A comprehensive Monte Carlo study was conducted to evaluate the accuracy of the parametric confidence interval and 3 nonparametric bootstrap confidence intervals for r(c4). Of the 4 intervals, our results showed that the bootstrap bias-corrected and accelerated percentile interval (BCaI) yielded the most accurate results across different data situations. In addition, the mean-corrected correlation r(c4) was found to be more accurate than the uncorrected estimate. Implications of the mean-corrected correlation r(c4) and BCaI in organizational studies are also discussed.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the factors associated with insulin resistance (IR) in patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. METHODS: Sixty-eight patients with mild chronic hepatitis B (MCHB) caused by HBV were recruited for study. Sixty-seven healthy individuals with no hepatitis virus infections and normal liver function were enrolled as controls. Demographic, anthropometric, clinical, and blood biochemical parameters were compared between the two groups. IR was determined by the homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-IR). The MCHB group was further divided into patients with IR (HOMA-IR: > 2.7) and patients without IR (HOMA-IR: less than 2.7). Demographic, anthropometric, clinical, and blood biochemical parameters were compared between the two sub-groups. Finally, the potential factors associated with IR were evaluated. RESULTS: Compared to the healthy controls, the MCHB patients had significantly higher serum insulin (Z = -5.451, P less than 0.01), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (Z = -8.211, P less than 0.01) and HOMA-IR (Z = -5.631, P less than 0.01). IR was detected in 44.12% (30/68) of the MCHB patients. The levels of ALT and body mass index (BMI) were significantly different between the MCHB patients with IR and without IR (t = -2.358, and t = -3.566, P less than 0.05). There was a significant correlation between BMI, ALT, and HOMA-IR in the MCHB patients (r = 0.374, r = 0.282, P less than 0.05), but not with the HBV DNA loads (r = 0.015, P = 0.904). Binary logistic regression analysis indicated that BMI [Exp(B): 1.859, P less than 0.01] and ALT [Exp(B): 1.022, P less than 0.05] were independent risk factors of IR in MCHB. CONCLUSION: There is a high prevalence of insulin resistance in patients with mild hepatitis caused by chronic HBV infection. In these patients, IR is correlated with abnormal liver function and BMI, and not HBV load.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study describes the development, implementation and evaluation of a team-based, multi-source method of assessment in which students on a clinical clerkship were provided with feedback on their performance as observed by physicians, residents, nurses, peers, patients and administrators. METHODS: The instrument was developed by reviewing existing assessment items and by obtaining input from assessors and students. Numerical data and written comments provided to students were collected, internal consistency was estimated and interviews and focus groups were used to determine acceptability to assessors and students. RESULTS: A total of 1068 assessors completed 3501 forms for 127 students. Internal consistency estimates for each assessment form were acceptable (Cronbach's alpha 0.856-0.948). Each student received an average of 188 words of written feedback divided into an average of 26 'Areas of Excellence' and 5 'Areas for Improvement'. Interviews revealed that the majority of students and assessors interviewed found the method acceptable. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that a team-based model of assessment based on the principles of multi-source feedback is a feasible and acceptable form of assessment for medical students learning in a clinical clerkship, and has some advantages over traditional preceptor-based assessment. Further studies will focus on the strengths and weaknesses of this novel assessment technique.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To review the situation of stomatological research projects supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and to analyze the status of stomatological research and obtained achievements in the past decade. METHODS: The internet-based science information system of NSFC together with Yearbook of Chinese Stomatology was served as the basis of data collection. All of the data were arranged and analyzed by Excel. RESULTS: A total of 866 projects and 234.4054 billion Yuan were supported by NSFC during the past decade, and they were increasing continuously. The average supportive strength of each single project was also enhanced. The percentage of projects supported by the NSFC for young scientists accounted for the biggest proportion. The approved projects of stomatology were covering an increasingly wide area of the subjects. The projects number of different areas kept growing, and further investigations were done in these projects. The areas number were from 10 increasing to 26. CONCLUSIONS: With the support of NSFC, great progress has been made in stomatology, and the interdisciplinary research between stomatology and other disciplines is more active.
