RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Panoramic radiographs are the most common radiographic tool used by the dental clinicians to evaluate teeth, mandible and other related structures of the jaws. Mandibular condyle is an important anatomical landmark for facial growth, expressed in an upward and backward direction. The presentation of mandibular condyle differs widely among different group of ages and individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2018 to March 2019 at Dow International Dental College Karachi that includes radiographic evaluation of 500 mandibular condyles. All retrievable orthopantomograms were obtained and data were extracted regarding age, gender and condylar morphology. RESULTS: The morphological appearances of mandibular condyle have great variation among different age groups and subjects. Normally, we recognise five basic shapes i.e. oval, bird beak, crooked finger, diamond and mixed. Out of 250 pair of condylar heads that were evaluated, 50% were oval, 40% bird beak, 4.8% crooked finger and diamond 4.8%. CONCLUSIONS: All four morphological types of mandibular condyles were observed and the oval shape condyles were most prevalent among both genders and all age groups. In future studies, the inclusion of other parameters and large sample size may provide unique information.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Composite resins are among the most popular restorative dental materials because of the strength and esthetic properties. The goal of this study was to assess the effect of commonly consumed beverages on microhardness and color stability of microhybrid (MH) and nanofilled NF) composite resins. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 240 samples were prepared from the composite material [MH = 120 (material I) and NF = 120 (material II)] and allocated into eight groups of 30 samples. In each group, half of the samples were tested for microhardness and another-half for color stability. After baseline measurements, the samples were immersed in test media, that is, distilled water and beverages (tea, cola, and coffee) for 15 days. Microhardness and color stability measurements were carried out after 15 days to assess the effect of beverages. The color stability and microhardness values were compared and evaluated by analysis of variance (ANOVA) using Tukey's alteration test. RESULTS: It was reported that the microhardness decreased for both the materials after immersion in all the beverages. Percentage change in microhardness was considerably higher in material II in comparison to the material I in cola drink. Color change was significantly higher in material II compared to material I in water and coffee. Cola drink caused the maximum change in microhardness among all the beverages and coffee caused the maximum color change among all the beverages. CONCLUSION: Both composite materials (I and II) showed a reduction in microhardness and change in color after immersion in a different type of test media.

RESUMO

Current status of resistance to benzimidazole (BZ) group of anthelmintic drugs against caprine nematodes in Central India at Amanala goat farm, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh (M. P.), was systematically investigated using faecal egg count reduction (FECR) test and egg hatch test (EHT). Besides, allele-specific PCR (AS-PCR) was deployed to ascertain the susceptible genotype (alleles) especially of the Haemonchus contortus. Randomly selected 30 goats, irrespective of age and sex, were divided into three groups of 10 each, to serve as treated and untreated controls. It was ensured that the animals were not administered with an anthelmintic drug for the past 3 months prior to undertaking the study, and faecal egg counts were estimated. FECR test evidenced fenbendazole resistance by partial elimination (24.90%) copro-egg counts in the treated group of animals vis-à-vis controls with a lower confidence interval of -26%. Further, EHT revealed ED-50 value of 0.335 µg of thiabendazole/ml, confirming benzimidazole resistance in the animals of that farm. AS-PCR showed that 62% of H. contortus larvae were homozygous resistant (rr), 24% heterozygous (rS) and 14% homozygous susceptible (SS). The genotypic frequencies of three genotypes (rr, rS and SS) were significantly (P < 0.01) different. The prevalence of benzimidazole resistance allele (r) was also significantly (P < 0.01) higher (74%) as compared to susceptible allele (S) (26%). The resistance to benzimidazole has been discussed while emphasizing improved managemental practices designed to reduce exposure of the goat population to parasites, minimize frequency of anthelmintic use at optimum dose and rotational use of different chemical groups of medicines with different mode of action, so as to overcome and combat the upcoming problem in the field.

RESUMO

The environmental quality of the Jacuípe River's estuary (very important in northeastern Brazil) was assessed during 2007 and 2008. In water, concentrations (mg L⁻¹) of NO2⁻ (<0.004 to 0.016), NO3⁻ (0.01 to 0.33), soluble PO4³â» (<0.02 to 0.22), dissolved oxygen (3.9 to 9.6), total contents (mg L⁻¹) of Cd (<0.001), Cu (<0.01), Pb (<0.01), and Zn (<0.1), pH (5.60 to 8.00), and electrical conductivity (0.12 to 48.60 mS cm⁻¹) agreed with environmental standards. In sediments, clay and total organic matter (%, m/m) varied, respectively, from 8.8 to 12.0 and from 1.1 to 8.8, while infrared, thermogravimetric profile, electronic micrograph, as well as X-Ray analyses showed desirable adsorptive characteristics. However, maximum exchangeable levels (mg kg⁻¹) of Cd (1.3), Cu (44.6), Pb (35.7), and Zn (43.7) and their respective maximum pseudototal concentrations (mg kg⁻¹): 19.4, 95.1, 68.2, and 30.3 were below the recommended limits. In this sense, it was possible to demonstrate good environmental preservation even with the growing number of industries and touristic activities in the evaluated estuarine area.

RESUMO

A survey was undertaken to assess the quality of contraceptive services provided to women delivering in a District General Hospital. Separate questionnaires were given to the women and the midwives giving the contraceptive advice. Response rate of the survey was 87%. Thirty eight per cent of women reported having some discussion on contraception during antenatal period. All the women had received contraceptive advises during the postpartum period. Eighty one per cent of women felt that sufficient information and enough time was given to discuss contraception. However analysis of questionnaires indicated that most received information only on short-term contraceptive methods. Out of 64 midwives surveyed, 52 had attended a family planning course. However 37 of them had attended the course at least 3 years earlier. Thirty eight midwives felt that they have adequate knowledge to give advice but all of them reported that they should receive further training. There should be provision for comprehensive discussion regarding contraceptive options during both antenatal and postpartum periods. Midwives require regular training in family planning.

RESUMO

To develop immunoprophylactic measures against multi-tick infestation, two glycoproteins of 34 and 29 kDa were isolated from the larvae of Hyalomma anatolicum anatolicum and Boophilus microplus, respectively, and assessed for their efficacy against experimental challenge infestations. The synergistic effect of the antigens in the presence of incomplete Freund's adjuvant was found to confer protection (DT%) in animals against 56.48% of larvae and 52% of adults of H. a. anatolicum, while the effect was 40% against adults of B. microplus. The efficacy (E%) of the antigens in combination against larvae and adults of H. a. anatolicum was calculated as 70% and 64.3%, respectively, and 63% against adults of B. microplus. A direct correlation between anti-glycoprotein antibody response and protection against infestation was observed. Western blot analysis detected specific antigen in the sera of animals of group A. The antigens in combination with incomplete Freund's adjuvant could protect animals from H. a. anatolicum and B. microplus infestations for at least 30 weeks. The possibility of employing the vaccination strategy in Indian conditions is discussed.

RESUMO

Lower urinary tract symptoms are very common and the approach to assessment and management has changed dramatically over the past few years. Previously referred to as prostatism, benign prostatic hyperplasia and bladder outflow obstruction, it is now recognised that in most men symptoms are due to a combination of benign prostatic enlargement and age-related bladder dysfunction. Most men require only simple tests for a diagnosis, with the more complex investigations reserved for when the diagnosis is not clear. Symptom bothersomeness and effect on quality of life are the critical factors when deciding how to treat a man. A cascade of treatments exists, including conservative management, medical therapy and surgery. A man moves up the cascade when the present management strategy fails to control symptoms. Traditional surgical techniques such as transurethral resection of the prostate are still appropriate for some men, although with improved medical treatments available the number of men undergoing surgery is declining.

RESUMO

Infection with Neisseria meningitidis group B has been difficult to detect, partly because this bacterial group's polysaccharide is a weak immunogen. This article describes work carried out to test a new procedure (MB-Dot-ELISA) employing a high-titered horse antiserum for detection of N. meningitidis group B antigens. The study assayed cerebrospinal fluid samples from 585 subjects, 574 with suspected meningitis cases and 11 with neurologic disorders. The results of the assay indicated a sensitivity of 0.991 and a specificity of 0.826. These results were superior to those obtained with latex agglutination and in substantial agreement with the results of counterimmunoelectrophoresis and bacteriologic methods. Overall, the MB-Dot-ELISA was found to be sensitive, inexpensive, and suitable for public health laboratory investigations.

RESUMO

Coronary arteries of transplanted hearts frequently develop a vasculopathy characterized by severe lumenal narrowing in the distal coronary arteries. It has been thought, on the basis of angiographic studies, that the coronary circulation of transplanted hearts with vasculopathy fails to develop collateral vessels normally. To determine the extent of the collateral circulation in transplanted hearts with a significant coronary stenosis, we measured an index of the collateral circulation, the coronary artery occlusion pressure, during single-vessel coronary angioplasty in seven patients with allograft vasculopathy and 18 patients with atherosclerotic disease who did not undergo transplantation. Aortic and coronary artery pressure distal to the stenosis in the epicardial artery were measured during balloon occlusion (> or = 45 seconds). Measurement variability for determination of coronary occlusion pressure was assessed by measuring occlusion pressure on two separate balloon inflations (n = 17). The severity of the dilated stenotic lesion was assessed with quantitative angiography (Reiber-PIE Data method). The indexes of stenosis severity were similar in coronary arteries of transplanted and native hearts. Coronary occlusion pressure measurements were highly reproducible (mean absolute difference between measurements, 1 +/- 1 mm Hg, r = 0.98). Coronary occlusion pressure in transplanted hearts (32 +/- 4 mm Hg) was nearly identical to that measured in coronary arteries of native hearts (29 +/- 2 mm Hg). When vessels with total occlusion were excluded and corrections were made for minor differences in hemodynamics (heart rate and blood pressure) were made, the coronary occlusion pressure in transplanted hearts remained nearly identical to native hearts.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Two dimensional echocardiographic measurements of the size of aortic and pulmonary valve annulus were made in 60 patients before balloon valvoplasty and compared to the angiographic measurements. Aortic valve annulus was measured in 34 patients (26 with valvar aortic stenosis and 8 with discrete subaortic stenosis) in the parasternal long axis or apical 5-chamber views. The pulmonary valve annulus was measured in 26 patients with valvar pulmonary stenosis (PS) in the parasternal short axis view of the right ventricular outflow view. The visualization of the annulus was good in all except 2 patients with valvar PS. Angiographic measurements of the aortic and pulmonary valve annulus were made in aortic root and right ventricular angiograms respectively, taken in both right and left anterior oblique views. There was an excellent correlation between the measurements of the annulus size by the two techniques (r value for pulmonary valve 0.91; for aortic valve 0.96; over all 0.94). Echocardiography can accurately measure valve annulus size and help in choosing balloon dilatation catheter of appropriate size before the valvoplasty procedure.

RESUMO

The acceptability and complications of tethered double-J stents were assessed in 17 patients. The study showed tethered ureteric stents to be safe, well tolerated and easy to remove. The technique avoids unnecessary ureteral instrumentation and general anaesthesia and has benefits for both patients and hospital resources.
