RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic and the associated economic recession has increased parental psychosocial stress and mental health challenges. This has adversely impacted child development and wellbeing, particularly for children from priority populations (culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) and rural/regional communities) who are at an already increased risk of health inequality. The increased mental health and psychosocial needs were compounded by the closure of in-person preventive and health promotion programs resulting in health organisations embracing technology and online services. Watch Me Grow- Electronic (WMG-E) - developmental surveillance platform- exemplifies one such service. WMG-E was developed to monitor child development and guide parents towards more detailed assessments when risk is identified. This Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT) aims to expand WMG-E as a digital navigation tool by also incorporating parents' mental health and psychosocial needs. Children and families needing additional assessments and supports will be electronically directed to relevant resources in the 'care-as-usual' group. In contrast, the intervention group will receive continuity of care, with additional in-person assessment and 'warm hand over' by a 'service navigator' to ensure their needs are met. METHODS: Using an RCT we will determine: (1) parental engagement with developmental surveillance; (2) access to services for those with mental health and social care needs; and (3) uptake of service recommendations. Three hundred parents/carers of children aged 6 months to 3 years (recruited from a culturally diverse, or rural/regional site) will be randomly allocated to the 'care-as-usual' or 'intervention' group. A mixed methods implementation evaluation will be completed, with semi-structured interviews to ascertain the acceptability, feasibility and impact of the WMG-E platform and service navigator. CONCLUSIONS: Using WMG-E is expected to: normalise and de-stigmatise mental health and psychosocial screening; increase parental engagement and service use; and result in the early identification and management of child developmental needs, parental mental health, and family psychosocial needs. If effective, digital solutions such as WMG-E to engage and empower parents alongside a service navigator for vulnerable families needing additional support, will have significant practice and policy implications in the pandemic/post pandemic period. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The trial (Protocol No. 1.0, Version 3.1) was registered with ANZCTR (registration number: ACTRN12621000766819 ) on July 21st, 2021 and reporting of the trial results will be according to recommendations in the CONSORT Statement.

RESUMO

Grooming is a process whereby an individual who plans to commit a sexual crime uses deception with the victim as well as the people in the environment (such as the victim's family members, the offender's family, etc.) so that the crime goes undetected. Despite the overwhelming presence of grooming in sexual crimes, there is a dearth of research on sex offenders' perceptions of their own grooming behaviors. This paper describes the psychometrics and lessons learned in the pilot study of testing and revising a new instrument for measuring sex offenders' perceptions of their grooming behaviors (Sex Offenders Grooming Assessment; SOGA), with a sample (n = 50) of convicted male sex offenders in community based specialized therapy. Analyses suggest that using behaviorally-specific questions yielded more reliable results than general categorical grooming questions. Understanding how sex offenders perceive and report their grooming behavior provides valuable insight critical to treatment and assessment.

RESUMO

Nurses and midwives of Australia now is the time for change! As powerfully placed, Indigenous and non-Indigenous nursing and midwifery professionals, together we can ensure an effective and robust Indigenous curriculum in our nursing and midwifery schools of education. Today, Australia finds itself in a shifting tide of social change, where the voices for better and safer health care ring out loud. Voices for justice, equity and equality reverberate across our cities, our streets, homes, and institutions of learning. It is a call for new songlines of reform. The need to embed meaningful Indigenous health curricula is stronger now than it ever was for Australian nursing and midwifery. It is essential that nursing and midwifery leadership continue to build an authentic collaborative environment for Indigenous curriculum development. Bipartisan alliance is imperative for all academic staff to be confident in their teaching and learning experiences with Indigenous health syllabus. This paper is a call out. Now is the time for Indigenous and non-Indigenous nurses and midwives to make a stand together, for justice and equity in our teaching, learning, and practice. Together we will dismantle systems, policy, and practices in health that oppress. The Black Lives Matter movement provides us with a 'now window' of accepted dialogue to build a better, culturally safe Australian nursing and midwifery workforce, ensuring that Black Lives Matter in all aspects of health care.

RESUMO

The article reports a study whose purpose was to develop and test the Patient Record Pain Management Assessment Tool, an instrument to evaluate compliance with the American Pain Society's quality assurance standards on acute pain and cancer pain in chart documentation. Content validity, overall validity, and interrater reliability were all found to be acceptable. The instrument is therefore a useful tool for documenting the level of pain management practice in institutional settings.

RESUMO

The increasing range and complexity of biologicals, and the greater demand for these products, have resulted in a greater volume of trade in animal-based biological material. This has given rise, in turn, to many approaches to the regulation of importation of these materials, as countries seek protection against the introduction of disease. Harmonization of these regulatory approaches would contribute significantly to the availability of veterinary biologicals, to their manufacture and trade, and to disease security. Australia has developed systems for the categorisation and evaluation of biologicals, control by import permits, and specific procedures at point-of-entry and in institutions where these products are used. Computerised records and precedents assist in evaluation and in the issuing of permits. Recognition that some materials must be subject to further control has led to a system of registration of institutions based on levels of biosecurity, and approved use and disposal programmes. Institutions vary from high-security animal health laboratories to human in vitro fertilisation clinics, which use animal-derived media and materials. Such institutions are regulated through quality assurance contracts. Quarantine authorities have linkages with other agencies which have an interest in these products. These linkages reflect the administrative structures of government in Australia, and provide for management of all forms of risk. The author describes these systems and overviews their biological basis.

RESUMO

Federal- and state-mandated criteria for accountability have promoted an "assessment movement" in higher education. The federal focus caused higher education's regional accrediting bodies to place greater emphasis on assessment for institutional accountability. Numerous approaches have been identified for the assessment process including comprehensive examinations, evaluation by alumni and internship preceptors, and self-report data by students. The Role Delineation Project Curriculum Framework also has been useful in assessing curricula. Strategies used in a comprehensive assessment plan for the Health Studies Dept. at Eastern Illinois University include focus group interviews, Departmental Advisory Council review, and assessment by internship preceptors. Data indicate the professional preparation program adequately prepares students in Responsibilities I, II, III, IV, and VII. Further consideration will be given to revising the curriculum to include material to prepare students in competencies required for Responsibilities V and VI.

RESUMO

Twelve children with cerebral palsy ages 18 months to eight years received custom-molded DESEMO seats. All had markedly abnormal motor function manifested in spastic, athetoid, or mixed patterns of movement. None sat independently or were expected to gain such function. Three had minimal head control, and the remaining nine had fair head control. All were inadequately positioned in commercially available seats. The custom-molded DESEMO seat was clinically evaluated with regard to its ability to produce overall relaxation, assist head control, enhance feeding, improve upper extremity function, and prevent deformities. Also assessed were parents' acceptance of the device, cost, cosmesis, convenience, and its capacity to accommodate growth. Seven children utilized the seat as an insert for a motorized wheelchair. The secure positioning provided by this device permitted operation of a standard hand operated joystick control. Two seats were used as floor sitters, allowing the children to participate in peer group activities. Feeding improved dramatically with two children, as evidenced by weight gain and decreased feeding time. Three children with kyphotic spinal deformities showed no improvement or progression of their curves despite the seating device. The positioning device assisted head control for 10 children but failed to enhance head control in the remaining two. The overall cost of the device, including orthotist and physical therapist time, is $640.00 (1985). The average growth potential of the seat is six to nine months.

RESUMO

During the 1960s, three modalities of treatment aimed at rehabilitation of the drug abuser (methadone maintenance, outpatient drug free treatment, and the residential therapeutic community) were developed. Large amounts of public and private monies have gone to supporting these modalities; little evaluation as to the efficacy of such rehabilitation efforts has been done. This paper attempts to delineate the evaluative research efforts undertaken in the drug abuse field to date. In addition, the findings of an eight-year evaluation of six drug treatment programs in Newark, NJ are presented. The authors propose a paradigm for quick, effective evaluation of drug and alcohol programs at minimal cost.
