RESUMO

Recent changes to diagnostic criteria for serious conduct problems in children and adolescents have included the presence of elevated callous-unemotional traits to define etiologically and clinically important subgroups of youth with a conduct problem diagnosis. The Clinical Assessment of Prosocial Emotions (CAPE) is an intensive assessment of the symptoms of this limited prosocial emotions specifier that uses a structured professional judgment method of scoring, which may make it useful in clinical settings when diagnoses may require more information than that provided by behavior rating scales. The present study adds to the limited tests of the CAPE's reliability and validity, using a sample of clinic-referred children ages 6-17 years of age, who were all administered the CAPE by trained clinicians. The mean age of the sample was 10.13 years (SD = 2.64); 54% of the sample identified as male and 46% identified as female; and 67% of participants identified as White, 29% identified as Black, and 52% identified as another race/ethnicity (i.e., Asian, Hispanic/Latinx, or other). The findings indicated that CAPE scores demonstrated strong interrater reliability. The scores also were associated with measures of conduct problems and aggression, even when controlling for behavior ratings of callous-unemotional traits. Further, when children with conduct problem diagnoses were divided into groups based on the presence of the limited prosocial emotions specifier from the CAPE, the subgroup with the specifier showed more severe conduct problems and aggression. The results support cautious clinical use of the CAPE, its further development and testing, and research into ways to make its use feasible in many clinical settings. Research has suggested that childhood-onset conduct problems (CPs) are more strongly related to individual predispositions, whereas adolescent-onset CP is more strongly associated with social factors, such as peer delinquency. Neighborhood disadvantage (ND) increases the risk for associating with deviant peers. Thus, peer delinquency could mediate the relationship between ND and adolescent-onset CP. This mediational hypothesis has not been tested previously. We tested this hypothesis in 1,127 justice-involved adolescent males using self-reported delinquency and official arrest records over 3 years after the youth's first arrest as outcomes. Predictors were self-reported and census-derived indicators of ND and self-reported peer delinquency. Age of onset moderated the associations between self-reported ND and arrests and between self-report of peer delinquency and arrests. In both cases, the association was stronger for those with adolescent-onset CP. Peer delinquency mediated all relationships between ND and CP. Our results also showed some unexpected differences in associations depending on whether self-reported ND or census-derived indicators were used as predictors. Specifically, census-derived ND was negatively related to self-reported offending, which could be due to the use of an arrested sample and the need for youth in more advantaged neighborhoods to show a more severe pattern of antisocial behavior to be arrested.

Due to the significant impairment associated with subthreshold bipolar symptomatology and the harmful effects of delayed diagnosis, there is a great need for diagnostic tools that can facilitate early identification of bipolar spectrum disorders. The Mood Disorder Assessment Schedule (MDAS) is a newly developed measure that focuses on autonomous changes in mood and energy, a key indicator of bipolar spectrum problems which is not included in current diagnostic tools for bipolar disorders. The current study tested the ability of the MDAS to identify individuals at risk for bipolar spectrum disorders. In a cross-sectional sample of 396 inpatient adolescents, the MDAS identified a group of individuals with several bipolar spectrum disorder (BSD) indicators, including greater manic and depressive symptoms, affective lability, suicidal behavior, adverse reactions to antidepressants, and a family history of bipolar disorder and suicidal behavior. When compared to a standard diagnostic interview for bipolar disorders (i.e., Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia [KSADS]), the MDAS yielded stronger clinical utility in its ability to identify individuals with BSD indicators. Therefore, the MDAS appears to be a promising diagnostic tool for identifying adolescents at risk for BSDs and may help facilitate earlier diagnosis and prevent harmful effects of improper treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Although researchers, policymakers, and practitioners recognize the importance of the public's perceptions of police, few studies have examined developmental trends in adolescents and young adults' views of police. HYPOTHESES: Hypothesis 1: Perceptions of police legitimacy would exhibit a U-shaped curve, declining in adolescence before improving in young adulthood. Hypothesis 2: At all ages, Black youth would report more negative perceptions of police legitimacy than Latino youth, who would report more negative perceptions than White youth. Hypothesis 3: Perceptions of police bias would be consistently associated with worse perceptions of police legitimacy. METHOD: Utilizing longitudinal data from the Crossroads Study, this study examined within-person trends in males' perceptions of police legitimacy from ages 13 to 22, as well as whether perceptions of police bias were associated with perceptions of police legitimacy. RESULTS: Perceptions of police legitimacy followed a U-shaped curve that declined during adolescence, reached its lowest point around age 18, and improved during the transition to young adulthood. Compared with White youth, Latino and Black youth had shallower curves in perceptions of police legitimacy that exhibited less improvement during the transition to adulthood. Further, perceptions of police bias were consistently associated with more negative perceptions of police legitimacy across races and ages. CONCLUSIONS: While perceptions of police legitimacy may decline during adolescence before improving during the transition to adulthood, perceptions of police bias are consistently negatively related to youth and young adults' perceptions of police legitimacy. Extracurricular activities (ECAs) have been found to promote positive youth development and protect against misconduct and minor delinquency. However, little research has examined whether ECA participation predicts delinquency among at-risk young men or considered how delinquent behavior, in turn, impacts ECA participation. This study examined extracurricular participation over three years in a sample of 1,216 justice-involved young men (Mage  = 15.29). Approximately half of the sample participated in ECA each year. A cross-lagged panel model was used to examine the bidirectional association between ECA participation and two types of delinquency, school misconduct and criminal offending. The results suggest that ECA participation did not consistently predict subsequent delinquency. Rather, justice-involved young men who engaged in more delinquency were less likely to participate in ECAs.

Minority youth are disproportionately represented in the juvenile justice system. Examining how racial disparities relate to biased entry into and continued involvement with the system, while accounting for past and current offending, can provide context about the mechanisms behind overrepresentation. 1,216 adolescents were examined after first arrest to explore associations between race and history of self-reported offending, likelihood of formal processing, and likelihood of rearrest. Black youth committed fewer offenses prior to arrest than White youth, Black and Latino youth were more likely to be formally processed, and Black youth were most likely to be rearrested (even controlling for postbaseline offending), highlighting that minority youth are overrepresented in the juvenile justice system despite similar or lower levels of criminal behavior.

Support for the clinical importance of callous and unemotional (CU) traits has grown considerably in recent years, yet tools for the assessment of CU traits in clinical settings have largely been limited to questionnaires. This study examined the validity of the Clinical Assessment of Prosocial Emotions (CAPE 1.1), a newly developed clinician-rating measure of CU traits in children and adolescents. Participants were children aged 3 to 15 years (N = 82; 75% male) who were referred for treatment of conduct problems. Diagnoses of conduct disorder and oppositional defiant disorder were formulated based on semistructured diagnostic interviews prior to treatment. The CAPE 1.1 was scored based on structured interviews administered jointly to mothers and fathers and was validated with questionnaire measures of CU traits and other correlates of CU traits from multiple informants. Evidence of criterion validity was found in significant associations between CAPE 1.1 scores and questionnaire measures of CU traits completed by mothers, fathers, and teachers. Evidence of construct validity was found in significant associations between CAPE 1.1 scores and established correlates of CU traits, including severity of oppositional defiant disorder/conduct disorder symptoms indexed via diagnostic interview with parents, teacher ratings of proactive aggression, and reports of affective empathy by mothers and fathers. These findings provide support for the clinical utility of the CAPE 1.1 and its inclusion as part of a comprehensive assessment of children and adolescents with conduct problems. Youth who hold negative attitudes toward the justice system are more likely to engage in crime. It is particularly important to study attitudes early in someone's criminal career when they may still be open to change. To date, however, there has been no empirical test assessing whether the relation between attitudes and behavior changes after a first arrest. Using a sample of 1,216 first-time, male, juvenile offenders from the Crossroads Study, the present study explored: (a) racial/ethnic differences in the longitudinal patterns of youths' attitudes; and (b) reciprocal associations between youths' attitudes and both their offending behavior and rearrests in the 2.5 years after their first arrest. The results indicated that White youths' attitudes remained largely stable, Black youths' attitudes became more negative, and Latino youths' attitudes became more negative but only among Latino youth who reoffended. Although the results indicated that youths' attitudes were related to both offending and rearrest, the bidirectional relation between attitudes and offending weakened across time. After 2.5 years after their first arrest, attitudes no longer predicted offending or rearrests. These novel findings suggest that a youth's first contact is likely the most impactful. Although low self-control is consistently related to adolescent offending, it is unknown whether self-report measures or laboratory behavior tasks yield better predictive utility, or if a combination yields incremental predictive power. This is particularly important because developmental theory indicates that self-control is related to adolescent offending and, consequently, risk assessments rely on self-control measures. The present study (a) examines relationships between self-reported self-control on the Weinberger Adjustment Inventory with Go/No-Go response inhibition, and (b) compares the predictive utility of both assessment strategies for short- and long-term adolescent reoffending. It uses longitudinal data from the Crossroads Study of male, first-time adolescent offenders ages 13-17 (N = 930; 46 % Hispanic/Latino, 37 % Black/African-American, 15 % non-Hispanic White, 2 % other race). The results of the study indicate that the measures are largely unrelated, and that the self-report measure is a better indicator of both short- and long-term reoffending. The laboratory task measure does not add value to what is already predicted by the self-report measure. Implications for assessing self-control during adolescence and consequences of assessment strategy are discussed.

This study examined the item functioning of the Inventory of Callous-Unemotional Traits (ICU) in an ethnically diverse sample 1,190 of first-time justice-involved adolescents (mean age = 15.28 years, SD = 1.29). On elimination of 2 items, the total ICU score provided a reliable (internally consistent and stable) and valid (correlated with and predictive of measures of empathy, school conduct problems, delinquency, and aggression) continuous measure of callous and unemotional (CU) traits. A shortened, 10-item version of the total scale, developed from item response theory (IRT) analyses, appeared to show psychometric properties similar to those of the full ICU and, thus, could be used as an abbreviated measure of CU traits. Finally, item analyses and tests of validity suggested that the factor structure of the ICU reported in a large number of past studies could reflect method variance related to the ICU, including equal numbers of positively and negatively worded items. Specifically, positively worded items (i.e., items for which higher ratings are indicative of higher levels of CU traits) were more likely to be rated in the lower response categories, showed higher difficulty levels in IRT analyses (i.e., discriminated best at higher levels of CU traits), and were more highly correlated with measures of antisocial and aggressive behavior. On the basis of these findings, we recommend using the total ICU as a continuous measure of CU traits and do not recommend continued use of the subscale structure that has been reported in multiple past studies.

The current study examined the ability of the Structured Assessment of Violence Risk for Youth (SAVRY), a standardized risk assessment instrument, to predict probation outcomes among a sample of 158 adjudicated juvenile offenders placed on probation. Traditionally, the SAVRY has been used to measure violence risk among adolescents after release from custody. More recently, a delinquency risk measure based on SAVRY responses was developed, which could be useful for other types of outcome. This study examined the predictive validity of both summary risk ratings (SRR) for probation outcomes, including the reason for terminating probation and length of time on probation. A number of bivariate analyses and Cox regression models provided preliminary support for the ability of the nonviolent delinquency SRR, and modest support for the violence SRR, to predict probation outcomes. The implications for use of the SAVRY SRRs during juvenile justice system decision-making and recommendations for future research are discussed.

Research has indicated that there are several common pathways through which children and adolescents develop conduct disorder, each with different risk factors and each with different underlying developmental mechanisms leading to the child's aggressive and antisocial behavior. The current article briefly summarizes research on these pathways, including one that onsets in adolescence and seems to be an exaggeration of normal adolescent rebellion against authority. The other two pathways typically involve conduct problems that onset early in childhood but differ on whether the child shows significant levels of callous-unemotional traits or whether the child shows significant problems in emotional and behavioral regulation. Important directions for future research on these pathways are highlighted, as well as implications of these pathways for assessing and diagnosing children and adolescents with conduct disorder. In particular, diagnostic criteria should recognize the importance of callous-unemotional traits for distinguishing a distinct subgroup of youths with the disorder. Finally, implications for the prevention and treatment of conduct disorder are discussed, especially the need for interventions that are comprehensive and individualized to the characteristics of children and adolescents in the various developmental pathways.

The current study investigated bullying behaviors in 284 school children in the fourth through seventh grades at the time of the initial assessment. Peer ratings of bullying behavior were obtained at the end of the spring semester of one school year and at the end of the fall semester of the next school year. Importantly, peer ratings were obtained by assessing not only the level at which participants actually bully other students but also whether participants help bullies to hurt the victim (assister), encourage bullies (reinforce), or help the victim of bullying (defender). Our results did not support the utility of differentiating between bullies, assisters, or reinforcers. Specifically, these bullying roles were highly intercorrelated, both concurrently and across school years, and they showed similar correlations with aggression and several characteristics often associated with aggression (i.e., conduct problems, callous-unemotional traits, and positive expectancies about aggression). In contrast, ratings of defending designated a particularly prosocial group of students. Finally, whereas bullying appeared to be very similar in boys and girls, it was somewhat more stable across school years and was related to lower levels of prosocial behavior in boys, both of which could suggest that bullying may be somewhat more related to social group dynamics in girls.

This article provides a summary of research in 4 areas that have direct and important implications for evidence-based assessment of children and adolescents with conduct problems (CP): (a) the heterogeneity in types and severity of CP, (b) common comorbid conditions, (c) multiple risk factors associated with CP, and (d) multiple developmental pathways to CP. For each of these domains, we discuss implications for evidence-based assessment, present examples of specific measures that can aid in such assessments, and provide recommendations for evidence-based assessment of CP in children and adolescents. We conclude that there is a need to (a) enhance the clinical utility of evidence-based measures for assessing CP; (b) increase attention to the sensitivity of such measures to change, for both treatment evaluation and monitoring; and (c) develop assessment methods that reliably and validly identify a child or adolescent's placement and progress on the various developmental pathways to CP.
