RESUMO

AIM: A specific, valid and reliable measure is much needed to dynamically assess the recovery of symptoms in oesophagectomy patients. This study describes developing and validating the Convalescent Symptom Assessment Scale for oesophagectomy patients (CSAS_EC). DESIGN: An instrument development and cross-sectional validation study was conducted. METHODS: This study consists of two components: instrument development and psychometric tests. In instrument development, the literature review, qualitative interviews, Delphi method expert consultation and face validation were used to develop and refine scale content. In psychometric tests, the clinical test version scale was used to conduct a cross-sectional in the thoracic surgery department from 17 June to 20 November 2022. The Classical Test Theory and Multidimensional Item Response Theory (MIRT) analyses examined psychometric properties. RESULTS: In instrument development, literature review (n = 20), qualitative interviews (n = 21), expert consultation (n = 12) and pre-survey (n = 15) led to the development of the clinical test version scale. In psychometric tests, a total of 331 participants were enrolled. Confirmatory factor analysis and MIRT analysis verified that a model with 28 items in four dimensions was good. The four dimensions were early recovery symptoms, late recovery symptoms, persistent present symptoms and psychosocial symptoms. The Cronbach's α is 0.827. The validity and reliability were demonstrated to be acceptable. CONCLUSIONS: The CSAS_EC scale can be used as a tool to evaluate the recovery status of oesophagectomy patients.

RESUMO

AIM: To design a protocol based on the experiences of long-term survivors to facilitate resilience for oesophageal cancer patients in rural China. BACKGROUND: According to the latest Global Cancer Statistics Report, 604,000 new cases of oesophageal cancer were reported, of which over 60% of the disease burden is distributed in China. The incidence of oesophageal cancer in rural China (15.95/100,000) is twice as high as those in urban areas (7.59/100,000). To be sure, resilience can help patients better adapt to post-cancer life. But universal interventions involving improving the resilience of oesophageal cancer patients have much less been explored, especially for rural patients. METHODS: The two-arm, parallel design, non-blinded, randomised controlled trial will be implemented in 86 adults diagnosed with oesophageal cancer and will be randomly assigned to the control group or the intervention group via the blocked randomisation. The intervention group will undergo an intervention with one-on-one guidance from a nurse while viewing a CD of the experiences of long-term survivors with oesophageal cancer in rural areas. Every 2 weeks, a theme session will be introduced, and the entire intervention will continue for 12 weeks. Psychosocial variables (resilience, self-efficacy, coping mode and family support) will be surveyed at baseline, post-intervention and 3 months after the intervention. The paper complies with the Standard Protocol Items: Recommendations for Intervention Trials 2013 and Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials guidelines for study protocols adapted for designing and reporting parallel group randomised trials. CONCLUSION: The intervention programme transitions from hospitalisation to discharge, which includes one-on-one interventions by medical personnel and a portable CD describing the experiences of long-term survivors with rural oesophageal cancer. Once the intervention's effectiveness is proven, this protocol will provide psychological support for massive oesophageal cancer patients. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: The intervention programme may be used as an auxiliary therapy to promote patients' postoperative psychological rehabilitation. This programme has the advantages of being cost-effective, flexible, accessible, and convenient and can be implemented without the limitation of time, place and clinical medical staff. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The Chinese Clinical Trial Registration number is ChiCTR2100050047. Registered on 16 August 2021.

RESUMO

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are efficient brominated flame retardants and are released into various environmental media via usage, recycling and disposal. This study investigated the concentrations and ecological risks of two typical PBDEs, 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) and decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209), in surface waters across China from 2011 to 2018. The results showed that the concentration of BDE-209 (8.25 ng L-1) was higher than that of BDE-47 (1.02 ng L-1), and the concentrations of BDE-47 and BDE-209 in the lakes (2.56 ng L-1 and 22.19 ng L-1, respectively) were higher than those in the rivers (0.58 ng L-1 and 7.05 ng L-1, respectively). In addition, the concentration of BDE-209 in the wet season (2.61 ng L-1) was lower than that in the dry season (10.83 ng L-1), whereas the concentration of BDE-47 in the wet season (0.24 ng L-1) was a little lower than that in the dry season (0.99 ng L-1). BDE-47 and BDE-209 concentrations showed a gradual decrease in surface waters across China during the eight-year period. Based on the species sensitivity distribution (SSD) models, the 5% hazardous concentration (HC5) and predicted no-effect concentration (PNEC) values were derived using the acute and chronic toxicity data of BDE-47 and BDE-209. Results showed that the PNEC values based on the acute and chronic toxicity data were 2.08 µg L-1 and 0.52 µg L-1 for BDE-47, respectively and 370 µg L-1 and 0.34 µg L-1 for BDE-209, respectively. The risk quotient (RQ) values of BDE-47 in surface waters across China were far smaller than 0.1 (low ecological risk). Similarly, the RQ values of BDE-209 were also smaller than 0.1, except for those at Baiyangdian Lake and Chaohu Lake, where the probability of 0.1 ≤ RQ < 1.0 (medium ecological risk) was approximately 10% based on 10,000 Monte Carlo simulations.

RESUMO

Heavy metal concentrations (Al, V, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb) and the magnetic properties of soil and sediment samples in/around an electrolytic manganese metal (EMM) industrial estate in northern China were investigated. Potential enrichment of Mn, Zn, and Pb was found in/around the core area of the EMM industrial estate; however, the pollution load index (PLI) values did not indicate severely polluted levels. For adults, all hazard index (HI) values of noncarcinogenic risks in the soil samples were below the safe level of 1.00. For children, none of the HI values exceeded the safe level, except Mn (HI = 1.23) in one industrial estate sample. The particle size of magnetic materials was mostly in the range of stable single-domain, and coarser ferrimagnetic phases enhanced the magnetic parameters in the industrial estate soils. Highly positive correlations were found between magnetic parameters, heavy metal concentrations, and PLI values, demonstrating that the magnetic parameters are an efficient proxy for assessing heavy metal contamination. Enrichment of Mn, Zn, and Pb was mainly derived from the EMM industry. The data showed that the EMM industrial estate under cleaner production had limited adverse impacts on the adjacent environment from the perspective of heavy metal contamination.

RESUMO

The ecological risks of nonylphenol (NP) and tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) have received continued attention owing to their large consumption, frequently detection, adverse effects on the reproductive fitness, and lack of risk assessment technical systems. The geometric mean of the median concentrations of NP in the 22 surface waters was 0.278 µg/L, and TBBPA in the seven surface waters was 0.014 µg/L in China. The species sensitivity distribution (SSD) models were augmented by extrapolated reproductive toxicity data of native species to reduce uncertainty. The SSD models and the hazardous concentrations for 5% of species exhibited good robustness and reliability using the bootstrap method and minimum sample size determination. The acute and reproductive predicted no-effect concentrations (PNECs) were derived as 9.88 and 0.187 µg/L for NP, and 56.6 and 0.0878 µg/L for TBBPA, respectively. The risk quotients indicated that 11 of 22 locations for NP, and 3 of 7 locations for TBBPA were at high ecological risk levels based on the reproductive PNECs. Furthermore, the higher tier ecological risk assessment (ERA) based on potential affected fraction and joint probability curves indicated that the ecological risks in the four of above locations needed further concern. The ERA based on both the acute and reproductive toxicity is essential for assessing the ecological risks of NP and TBBPA, otherwise using acute PNECs only may result in an underestimation of ecological risk. The developed tiered ERA method and its framework can provide accurate, detailed, quantitative, locally applicable, and economically technical support for ERA of typical endocrine-disrupting chemicals in China.

RESUMO

Optimization in performance and membrane fouling of an electrochemical anaerobic membrane bioreactor (R1) for treating pesticide wastewater was investigated and compared with a conventional anaerobic membrane bioreactor (R2). The maximum COD removal efficiency of R2 was 80.1%, 80.0%, 67.4%, 61.1% with HRT of 96, 72, 48 and 24 h, which of R1 was enhanced to 84.7%, 84.3%, 82.0% and 66.3%. These results demonstrated that the optimum HRT of R1 was shortened to 48 h, which of R2 required 72 h. R1 reduced the contents of particulate and colloidal COD, and the fraction of COD converted to sludge was 5.0-8.2% lower than that of R2. The fouling rate was 0.99-1.44 kPa/d and reduced by 31.0%-38.5% compared with R2. Detoxification was enhanced by 7.8-47.7% with the assistance of bio-electrochemistry. Ultimately, ensuring similar performance, R1 achieved a 65.6% improvement in environmental benefit, a 26.3% and 38.9% reduction in unit capital and operating costs.

RESUMO

In this study, a novel combination system of the tapered variable diameter biological fluidized bed (TVDBFB) with electrochemistry (EC) has been developed and its performances are investigated at different seasons. The results showed that the COD removal efficiency of TVDBFB increased from 61% to 67% and compliance rate increased from 84% to 88% when the carrier packing rate increased from 15% to 30% and temperature was 12 ℃. However, COD removal efficiency and compliance rate increased to 87% and 100% when EC was a post treatment unit. The mathematical models could fit well with the attached biomass, which can be applied to reflect and predict the biomass per unit carrier under different conditions, and the EC removal of COD follow the first-order reaction kinetic model. The economic and environmental benefit analysis indicated that TVDBFB and EC were feasible for treating pesticide wastewater.

RESUMO

Ionic liquids (ILs) are widely used as extractants for heavy metals. However, the effect of mixtures of ILs and heavy metals is rarely understood. In this study, we tested the cytotoxicity of four ILs, four heavy metals and their mixtures on human MCF-7 cells in 96-well microplates. The toxicity of single compounds in MCF-7 cells ranges from 3.07 × 10(-6) M for Cu(II) to 2.20 × 10(-3) M for 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate. The toxicity of heavy metals in MCF-7 is generally higher than the toxicity of ILs. A uniform experimental design was used to simulate environmentally realistic mixtures. Two classical reference models (concentration addition and independent action) were used to predict their mixture. The experiments to evaluate the toxicity of the mixture revealed antagonism among four ILs and four heavy metals in MCF-7 cells. Pearson correlation analysis showed that Ni(II) and 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride are positively correlated with the extent of antagonism, while 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate showed a negative correlation. Data analysis was conducted in the R package mixtox, which integrates features such as curve fitting, experimental design, and mixture toxicity prediction. The international community of toxicologists is welcome to use this package and provide feedback as suggestions and comments.

RESUMO

This paper aims to solve automated feature selection problem in brain computer interface (BCI). In order to automate feature selection process, we proposed a novel EEG feature selection method based on decision tree (DT). During the electroencephalogram (EEG) signal processing, a feature extraction method based on principle component analysis (PCA) was used, and the selection process based on decision tree was performed by searching the feature space and automatically selecting optimal features. Considering that EEG signals are a series of non-linear signals, a generalized linear classifier named support vector machine (SVM) was chosen. In order to test the validity of the proposed method, we applied the EEG feature selection method based on decision tree to BCI Competition II datasets Ia, and the experiment showed encouraging results.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the burden of infectious disease of the Chinese population in 1990 and 2010 and changing pattern in the past 20 years. METHODS: Results of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2010 (GBD 2010) were used to demonstrate the burden of infectious disease of the Chinese population in 1990 and 2010 and changing pattern from 1990 to 2010 by gender and age groups, including indicators of incidence, mortality, years of life lost due to premature mortality (YLL), years lived with disability (YLD), disability-adjusted life years (DALY), and their age-standardized rates using data of the 2010 National Census as a standard population. RESULTS: In 1990 incidence, standardized incidence rate, mortality, standardized mortality rate, DALY, standardized DALY rate, YLL, standardized YLL rate, YLD, and standardized YLD rate of infectious disease in China were 3 067 469 200 cases, 242 669.34 cases/100 000, 824 300 cases, 72.27 cases/100 000, 58 937 700 person-years (PYRS), 3 992.85 PYRS/100 000, 46 504 100 PYRS, 2 932.99 PYRS/100 000, 12 433 600 PYRS, and 1 059.86 PYRS/100 000, respectively. All the aboved indicators were declined from 1990 to 2010, in 2010 they were 3 065 985 800 cases, 224 351.66 cases/100 000, 388 600 cases, 30.74 cases/100 000, 19 492 200 PYRS, 1 440.75 PYRS/100 000, 12 045 700 PYRS, 891.87 PYRS/100 000, 7 446 500 PYRS, and 548.89 PYRS/100 000, respectively. When 2010's indicators were compared to those in 1990, the rates of increase of incidence, incidence rate, mortality, mortality rate, DALY, DALY rate, YLL, YLL rate, YLD, and YLD rate were 56.84%, -9.85%, -33.07%, -61.54%, -27.68%, -58.42%, -32.46%, -61.17%, -16.75%, and -52.13% for 50-69 age group; for ≥ 70 age group, 57.90%, -5.86%, 7.41%, -36.12%, -5.00%, -43.51%, -5.14%, -43.59%, -4.52%, and -43.2%. CONCLUSIONS: The burden of infectious disease of the Chinese population was declined from 1990 to 2010; however, the incidence of infectious disease was increased in ≥ 50 age groups.
