RESUMO

Objective. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of a live 14-week mindfulness elective course on the well-being of Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) students in an accelerated program.Methods. Pharmacy students enrolled in a mindfulness elective participated in weekly class sessions that included an eight-week mindfulness program geared toward emerging adults. Eight weekly reflections were assigned to students and evaluated using the Text iQ text-analysis tool in Qualtrics. Investigators analyzed the sentiment scores assigned by Text iQ to detect differences in the tone of student reflections over time.Results. Twenty-four students were enrolled in this elective, and 22 students submitted complete reflections for evaluation. Mean sentiment scores and the percentage of responses in sentiment score categories (very positive and positive, mixed and neutral, very negative and negative) for these reflections showed significant differences between weeks.Conclusion. The tone of student reflections was more positive after the students learned and incorporated mindfulness practice into their accelerated PharmD curriculum.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this commentary is to recommend that pharmacists take a larger role in medication management for the vulnerable patient population of youth in foster care. To support this objective, it is important to understand (1) what foster care is, (2) the vulnerabilities of youth in foster care, (3) medication use among youth in foster care, and (4) how the foster care system complicates medication management. SUMMARY: Foster care youth are not yet considered a vulnerable patient population from the pharmacy perspective, despite a high rate of prescriptions and medications without proper indication. By virtue of being removed from their homes, foster youth experience trauma and are placed into a system that can be inconsistent, lead to further disruption, and create gaps in their medical care and management. Despite federal mandates, foster youth medication use remains drastically higher than that of the general population. Pharmacists' skills in medication therapy management, medication reconciliation, patient and caregiver education, and interprofessional collaboration can and should be used to reduce overmedication in the foster care population. CONCLUSION: Pharmacists can provide valuable therapeutic services and bring increased attention to the medication needs of foster care patients by assuming a more active role as a member of their care team.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To develop and implement an active, hands-on program for underrepresented minority (URM) seventh grade students and to determine if participation in the program increased interest in health care careers and understanding of pharmacy and physician assistant (PA) professions. DESIGN: A hands-on educational program was developed in conjunction with local middle school administrators and staff for URM 7th grade students. The program was designed to be hands-on and focus on pharmacy and PA laboratory skills. A discussion component was included, allowing participants to interact personally with pharmacy and PA students and faculty members. ASSESSMENT: Students' responses to survey questions about interest in health care careers and knowledge about health professions were compared before and after 2 separate offerings of the program. After the program, significant increases were seen in participants' understanding of the pharmacy and PA professions. An increased percentage of participants reported interest in health care careers after the program than before the program. CONCLUSION: Introducing middle school-aged URM students to the pharmacy and PA professions through a hands-on educational program increased interest in, and knowledge of, these professions.
