RESUMO

Knowledge regarding the occurrence of short-chain and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs and MCCPs) in foodstuffs and their dietary exposure risks for rural Tibetan residents remains largely unknown. Herein, we collected main foodstuffs (including highland barley, vegetables, Tibetan butter, mutton, and yak beef) across the rural Tibetan Plateau and characterized the CP profiles and concentrations. The highest SCCPs concentrations were detected in Tibetan butter (geometric mean (GM): 240.6 ng/g wet weight (ww)), followed by vegetables (59.4 ng/g ww), mutton (51.4 ng/g ww), highland barley (46.3 ng/g ww), and yak beef (31.7 ng/g ww). For MCCPs, the highest concentrations were also detected in Tibetan butter (319.5 ng/g ww), followed by mutton (181.9 ng/g ww), vegetables (127.0 ng/g ww), yak beef (71.2 ng/g ww), and highland barley (30.3 ng/g ww). The predominant congener profiles of SCCPs were C13Cl7-8 in mutton and yak beef, C10Cl7-8 in Tibetan butter, and C10-11Cl6-7 in highland barley and vegetables. The predominant congener profiles of MCCPs were C14Cl7-9 in all sample types. Combined with our previous results of free-range chicken eggs, the median estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of SCCPs and MCCPs via diet for Tibetan rural adults and children was estimated to be 728.8 and 1853.9 ng/kg bw/day and 2565.6 and 5952.8 ng/kg bw/day, respectively. In the worst scenario, MCCPs might induce potential health risks for rural Tibetan population. To our knowledge, this is the first systematic dietary exposure research of SCCPs and MCCPs in the remote rural areas.

RESUMO

Over the last two decades, Taiwan has effectively diminished atmospheric concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs) through the adept utilization of advanced technologies and the implementation of air pollution control devices. Despite this success, there exists a dearth of data regarding the levels of other PM2.5-bound organic pollutants and their associated health risks. To address this gap, our study comprehensively investigates the spatial and seasonal variations, potential sources, and health risks of PCDD/Fs, Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and Polychlorinated naphthalene (PCNs) in Northern and Central Taiwan. Sampling collections were conducted at three specific locations, including six municipal waste incinerators in Northern Taiwan, as well as a traffic and an industrial site in Central Taiwan. As a result, the highest mean values of PM2.5 (20.3-39.6 µg/m3) were observed at traffic sites, followed by industrial sites (14.4-39.3 µg/m3), and the vicinity of the municipal waste incinerator (12.4-29.4 µg/m3). Additionally, PCDD/Fs and PCBs exhibited discernible seasonal fluctuations, displaying higher concentrations in winter (7.53-11.9 and 0.09-0.12 fg I-TEQWHO/m3) and spring (7.02-13.7 and 0.11-0.16 fg I-TEQWHO/m3) compared to summer and autumn. Conversely, PCNs displayed no significant seasonal variations, with peak values observed in winter (0.05-0.10 fg I-TEQWHO/m3) and spring (0.03-0.08 fg I-TEQWHO/m3). Utilizing a Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model, sintering plants emerged as the predominant contributors to PCDD/Fs, constituting 77.9% of emissions. Woodchip boilers (68.3%) and municipal waste incinerators (21.0%) were identified as primary contributors to PCBs, while municipal waste incinerators (64.6%) along with a secondary copper and a copper sludge smelter (22.1%) were the principal sources of PCNs. Moreover, the study specified that individuals aged 19-70 in Northern Taiwan and those under the age of 12 years in Central Taiwan were found to have a significantly higher cancer risk, with values ranging from 9.26 x 10-9-1.12 x 10-7 and from 2.50 x 10-8-2.08 x 10-7respectively.

RESUMO

Two fish species from the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, China, were sampled to investigate the occurrence, tissue distribution, age-dependent accumulation and ecological risk assessment of 24 organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs). Seventeen OPFRs were detected in tissue samples with a total concentration ranging from not detected (ND) to 1092 ng g-1 dw. Cl-OPFRs were predominant in all tissues (mean: 145 ng g-1 dw, median: 72.9 ng g-1 dw) and the concentrations of OPFRs in brain were the greatest (crucian carp: 525 ng g-1 dw, silver carp: 56.0 ng g-1 dw) compared with the other three organs (e.g., liver, muscle and gonad). Furthermore, the total concentrations of OPFRs in crucian carp tissues were significantly greater than those in silver carp (P < 0.01). Age-dependent accumulation of OPFRs was observed in the two fish species, but the accumulation profiles in the two fish species were different. Ecological risk assessment demonstrated that both fish species were at medium to high risk, and TDCIPP was a main contributor (>50%).

RESUMO

Preventing work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) is crucial in reducing their impact on individuals and society. However, the existing mainstream 2D image-based approach is insufficient in capturing the complex 3D movements and postures involved in many occupational tasks. To address this, an improved deep learning-based rapid entire body assessment (REBA) method has been proposed. The method takes working videos as input and automatically outputs the corresponding REBA score through 3D pose reconstruction. The proposed method achieves an average precision of 94.7% on real-world data, which is comparable to that of ergonomic experts. Furthermore, the method has the potential to be applied across a wide range of industries as it has demonstrated good generalisation in multiple scenarios. The proposed method offers a promising solution for automated and accurate risk assessment of WMSDs, with implications for various industries to ensure the safety and well-being of workers.

This paper proposes a deep learning-based improved rapid entire body assessment (REBA) method for assessing work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) risks using 3D pose reconstruction from videos, achieving 94.7% precision, comparable to ergonomic experts, with potential applications across various industries.

RESUMO

Rapid social-economic development introduces modern lifestyles into rural areas, not only bringing numerous modern products but also new pollutants, such as chlorinated paraffins (CPs). The rural Tibetan Plateau has limited industrial activities and is a unique place to investigate this issue. Herein we collected 90 free-range chicken egg pool samples across the rural Tibetan Plateau to evaluate the pollution status of CPs. Meanwhile, CPs in related soils, free-range chicken eggs from Jiangxi, and farmed eggs from markets were also analyzed. The median concentrations of SCCPs (159 ng g-1 wet weight (ww)) and MCCPs (1390 ng g-1 ww) in Tibetan free-range chicken eggs were comparable to those from Jiangxi (259 and 938 ng g-1 ww) and significantly higher than those in farmed eggs (22.0 and 81.7 ng g-1 ww). In the rural Tibetan Plateau, the median EDI of CPs via egg consumption by adults and children were estimated to be 81.6 and 220.2 ng kg-1 bw day-1 for SCCPs and 483.4 and 1291 ng kg-1 bw day-1 for MCCPs, respectively. MCCPs might pose potential health risks for both adults and children in the worst scenario. Our study demonstrates that new pollutants should not be ignored and need further attention in remote rural areas.

RESUMO

Introduction: Sarcopenia is an adverse prognostic factor in patients with liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Image-based sarcopenia assessment allows a standardized method to assess abdominal skeletal muscle. However, which is an index muscle for sarcopenia remains unclear. Therefore, we investigated whether sarcopenia defined according to different muscle groups with computed tomography (CT) scans can predict the prognosis of HCC after radioembolization. Methods: In this retrospective study, we analyzed patients who underwent radioembolization for unresectable HCC between January 2010 and December 2019. Before treatment, the total abdominal muscle (TAM), psoas muscle (PM), and paraspinal muscle (PS) areas were evaluated using a single CT slice at the third lumbar vertebra. In previous studies, sarcopenia was determined using the TAM, PM, and PS after stratifying by sex. Finally, we investigated each muscle-defined sarcopenia to decide whether or not it can serve as a prognostic factor for overall survival (OS). Results: We included 92 patients (74 men and 18 women). TAM, PM, and PS areas were significantly higher in the men than in the women (all p < 0.05). The patients with sarcopenia defined using PM, but not TAM and PS, exhibited significantly poorer OS than those without sarcopenia (median 15.3 vs. 23.8 months, p = 0.034, 0.821, and 0.341, respectively). After adjustment for clinical variables, such as body mass index, liver function, alpha-fetoprotein level, clinical staging, treatment response, and posttreatment curative therapy, PM-defined sarcopenia (hazard ratio: 1.899, 95% confidence interval: 1.087-3.315) remained an independent predictor for the poor OS. Conclusion: CT-assessed sarcopenia defined using PM was an independent prognostic factor for the poorer prognosis of unresectable HCC after radioembolization.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Over 10 million robotic surgeries have been performed. However, the cost and benefit of robotic surgery need to be evaluated to help hospitals, surgeons, patients, and payers make proper choices, making a health economic analysis necessary. The authors revealed the bibliometric profile in the field of health economics of robotic surgery to prompt research development and guide future studies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Web of Science Core Collection scientific database was searched for documents indexed from 2003 to 31 December 2022. Document types, years, authors, countries, institutions, journal sources, references, and keywords were analyzed and visualized using the Bibliometrix package, WPS Office software, Microsoft PowerPoint 2019, VOSviewer software (version 1.6.18), ggplot2, and Scimago Graphica. RESULTS: The development of the health economics of robotic surgery can be divided into three phases: slow-growing (2003-2009), developing (2010-2018), and fast-developing (2019-2022). J.C.H. and S.L.C. were the most active and influential authors, respectively. The USA produced the most documents, followed by China, and Italy. Korea had the highest number of citations per document. Surgical Endoscopy and Other Interventional Techniques accepted most documents, whereas Annals of Surgery, European Urology, and Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynecology had the highest number of citations per document. The Journal of Robotic Surgery is promising. The most-cited document in this field is New Technology and Health Care Costs - The Case of Robot-Assisted Surgery in 2010. The proportion of documents on urology is decreasing, while documents in the field of arthrology are emerging and flourishing. CONCLUSION: Research on the health economics of robotic surgery has been unbalanced. Areas awaiting exploration have been identified. Collaboration between scholars and coverage with provisions for evidence development by the government is needed to learn more comprehensively about the health economics of robotic surgery.

RESUMO

Flexible wearable crack strain sensors are currently receiving significant attention because they can be used in a wide range of physiological signal monitoring and human-machine interaction applications. However, sensors with high sensitivity, great repeatability, and wide sensing range remain challenging. Herein, a tunable wrinkle clamp down structure (WCDS) crack strain sensor based on high Poisson's ratio material with high sensitivity, high stability, and wide strain range is proposed. Based on the high Poisson's ratio of the acrylic acid film, the WCDS was prepared by a prestretching process. The wrinkle structures can clamp down the crack to improve the cyclic stability of the crack strain sensor while maintaining its high sensitivity. Moreover, the tensile properties of the crack strain sensor are improved by introducing wrinkles in the bridge-like gold stripes connecting each separated gold flake. Owing to this structure, the sensitivity of the sensor can reach 3627, stable operation over 10 000 cycles is achieved, and the strain range can reach about 9%. In addition, the sensor exhibits low dynamic response and good frequency characteristics. Because of its demonstrated excellent performance, the strain sensor can be used in pulse wave and heart rate monitoring, as well as posture recognition and game control.

RESUMO

Organophosphate esters (OPEs), as an important class of new pollutants, have been pervasively detected in global aquatic products, arousing widespread public concern due to their potential bioaccumulative behavior and consequent risks. With the continuous improvement of living standards of citizens, there have been constant increment of the proportion of aquatic products in diets of people. The levels of OPEs exposed to residents may also be rising due to the augmented consumption of aquatic products, posing potential hazards on human health, especially for people in coastal areas. The present study integrated the concentrations, profiles, bioaccumulation, and trophic transfer of OPEs in global aquatic products, including Mollusca, Crustacea, and fish, evaluated health risks of OPEs through aquatic products in daily diets by Mont Carol Simulation (MCS), and found Asia has been the most polluted area in terms of the concentration of OPEs in aquatic products, and would have been increasingly polluted. Among all studied OPEs, chlorinated OPEs generally showed accumulation predominance. It is worth noting that some OPEs were found bioaccumulated and/or biomagnified in aquatic ecosystems. Though MCS revealed relative low exposure risks of residents, sensitive and special groups such as children, adolescents, and fishermen may face more serious health risks than the average residents. Finally, knowledge gaps and recommendations for future research are discussed encouraging more long-term and systematic global monitoring, comprehensive studies of novel OPEs and OPEs metabolites, and more toxicological studies to completely evaluate the potential risks of OPEs.

RESUMO

As an important part of electric vehicles, lithium-ion battery packs will have a certain environmental impact in the use stage. To analyze the comprehensive environmental impact, 11 lithium-ion battery packs composed of different materials were selected as the research object. By introducing the life cycle assessment method and entropy weight method to quantify environmental load, a multilevel index evaluation system was established based on environmental battery characteristics. The results show that the Li-S battery is the cleanest battery in the use stage. In addition, in terms of power structure, when battery packs are used in China, the carbon footprint, ecological footprint, acidification potential, eutrophication potential, human toxicity cancer and human toxicity noncancer are much higher than those in the other four regions. Although the current power structure in China is not conducive to the sustainable development of electric vehicles, the optimization of the power structure is expected to make electric vehicles achieve clean driving in China.

RESUMO

Inhibitors of programmed cell death protein 1 and its associated ligand (PD-L1) are widely used in cancer treatment. However, medical costs and benefits of PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors need attention owing to differences in response rates among individuals. This study explored global trends in the health economics field of PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors to enhance their worldwide development. Bibliometric analysis of all documents currently indexed in Web of Science Core Collection from inception to 2022 was performed. Publication year, authors, countries, institutes, and journals were analyzed by Bibliometrix package (version 3.2.1) in R (version 4.1.3). CiteSpace (version 6.1.R6) and VOSviewer (version 1.6.18) were used to analyze burst words, co-authorship of institutes, co-cited journals, and co-cited references, while figures were mainly drawn by Ggplot2 package (version 3.3.5) in R (version 4.1.3) and SCImago Graphica Beta (version 1.0.23). A total of 2020 documents related to the health economics of PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors were identified, and 1,204 documents met the selection criteria for inclusion in the study. A rapid increase in the number of publications since 2019 was observed, but this increase stopped in 2022, revealing research saturation in the field. Value in Health (166 publications, 13.79% of total documents) had the most publications, while New England Journal of Medicine (2,890 co-citations) was the most co-cited journal. The United States was the leading contributor in this field with 506 publications and the top two productive institutes globally. The main hot topics included the cost-effectiveness of treatment with PD-1 and/or PD-L1 inhibitors, and the comparison between the cost-effectiveness of PD-/PD-L1 inhibitors and other drugs. There were substantial differences between developed and developing countries in the health economics field of PD-1 and/or PD-L1 inhibitors. The cost-effectiveness analysis of combined treatment with PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors and other drugs warrants further attention. Findings from this study may provide governments and pharmaceutical companies with a strong reference for future research.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis is one of the most frequent inflammatory skin conditions and could be treated via tele-dermatology, provided that the current lack of reliable tools for objective severity assessments is overcome. Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) has a prominent level of subjectivity and is rarely used in real practice, although it is the most widely accepted metric for measuring psoriasis severity currently. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop an image-artificial intelligence (AI)-based validated system for severity assessment with the explicit intention of facilitating long-term management of patients with psoriasis. METHODS: A deep learning system was trained to estimate the PASI score by using 14,096 images from 2367 patients with psoriasis. We used 1962 patients from January 2015 to April 2021 to train the model and the other 405 patients from May 2021 to July 2021 to validate it. A multiview feature enhancement block was designed to combine vision features from different perspectives to better simulate the visual diagnostic method in clinical practice. A classification header along with a regression header was simultaneously applied to generate PASI scores, and an extra cross-teacher header after these 2 headers was designed to revise their output. The mean average error (MAE) was used as the metric to evaluate the accuracy of the predicted PASI score. By making the model minimize the MAE value, the model becomes closer to the target value. Then, the proposed model was compared with 43 experienced dermatologists. Finally, the proposed model was deployed into an app named SkinTeller on the WeChat platform. RESULTS: The proposed image-AI-based PASI-estimating model outperformed the average performance of 43 experienced dermatologists with a 33.2% performance gain in the overall PASI score. The model achieved the smallest MAE of 2.05 at 3 input images by the ablation experiment. In other words, for the task of psoriasis severity assessment, the severity score predicted by our model was close to the PASI score diagnosed by experienced dermatologists. The SkinTeller app has been used 3369 times for PASI scoring in 1497 patients from 18 hospitals, and its excellent performance was confirmed by a feedback survey of 43 dermatologist users. CONCLUSIONS: An image-AI-based psoriasis severity assessment model has been proposed to automatically calculate PASI scores in an efficient, objective, and accurate manner. The SkinTeller app may be a promising alternative for dermatologists' accurate assessment in the real world and chronic disease self-management in patients with psoriasis.

RESUMO

This article argues that advanced democracies face a dual crisis of rising inequality and population aging, which jointly put pressure on welfare regime sustainability. Particularly vulnerable are young people and the elderly in the context of these structural changes. As a result, young people and senior citizens in advanced democracies are increasingly focused on economic equality, which in turn undermines their support for democracy in its current form that prioritizes liberal economic policies. Survey data collected between 2010 and 2020 support the argument. Regardless of the political issues on which they differ, young and old appear to share similar views on what constitutes an ideal democracy.

RESUMO

Crop production is the main consumer of water resources. The heterogeneous water resource endowments and imbalanced crop water use exacerbate regional resource consumption inequality. In this study, we quantified the crop water footprint (CWF) of 356 cities in China from 2000 to 2020, measured the inequality between the city CWF and water resources, and identified different strategies to alleviate regional CWF inequality. We found that the average CWF from 2000 to 2020 varied widely across cities, ranging from 0.03 × 108 m3 to 806.78 × 108 m3, and the inequality between city CWF and local water resource endowment was increasing. China had a strong dependence on green water in crop production, and its proportion increased from 52.48 % to 67.17 %. The Gini coefficient of the green water footprint increased from 0.545 to 0.621, and the degree of inequality increased significantly. In addition, the blue water and gray water continuously showed great inequality, especially the blue water, the Gini coefficient of which was 0.724 in 2020. The results show significant disparities in CWF among cities, which have highly exacerbated regional inequality in China. Improving the utilization rate of green water is an important measure to balance the allocation between serving the natural ecosystem and meeting the basic human needs. This study revealed for the first time the inequality of city-level CWF and highlights the severe situation of inequality among regions in China. Balancing the inequality between CWF and water resource endowment at city-level is conducive to fundamentally solving the problem of unreasonable water resource allocation.

RESUMO

Using in vivo multiphoton fluorescent dosimetry, we demonstrate that the clearance dynamics of Indocyanine Green (ICG) in the blood can quickly reveal liver function reserve. In normal rats, the ICG retention rate was below 10% at the 15-minute post-administration; While in the rat with severe hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the 15-minute retention rate is over 40% due to poor liver metabolism. With a 785 nm CW laser, the fluorescence dosimeter can evaluate the liver function reserve at a 1/10 clinical dosage of ICG without any blood sampling. In the future, this low-dosage ICG 15-minute retention dosimetry can be applied for the preoperative assessment of hepatectomy or timely perioperative examination.

RESUMO

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) links China to markets and sources of raw materials around the world while stimulating economic growth in developing countries and leading to widespread and occasionally unexpected social and environmental impacts. Considering that few studies have focused on the trade-embodied social and environmental impacts and two-way impact mechanisms throughout the BRI, this study, for the first time, uses social-economic-environmental footprints and the corresponding indicators of ecological efficiency and environmental stress to methodically measure the spatial distribution and regional transfer among three major regions comprising China (CHN), countries along the Belt and Road countries except China (CBR), and the rest of world (REW) from the standpoint of spillover and feedback effects, to better coordinate sustainable development between environment, economy, and society of the BRI. The results indicated the importance of spillover-feedback effects. Its significance lies not in comparison with the multiplier effect or the rates to TF, but in the indication of the two-way influence between regions through the numerical value of spillover-feedback effects of different regions and different industries. We identified that CBR and REW displayed the highest regional correlation in environment-economic aspects, followed by CHN and REW. The biggest contribution to the total footprint stemmed from the multiplier effects, suggesting the possibility that initiatives (e.g., BRI) could reduce the multiplier effects through internal drive optimization to offset the negative impact of spillover-feedback effects between regions (e.g., pollution transfer). Regarding employment, the feedback effects in CBR were the highest, suggesting that the indirect response due to the world's final demand pulled the largest employment in CBR. Moreover, REW was the net exporter of WF, CF, and EF, while the net importer of VAF and TOF. Furthermore, if ecological efficiency and environmental stress indicators were not considered, the stress of regional water resource use and carbon emission will be underestimated to a certain extent. For example, I-AGR of CHN and CBR in water resources stress, and III-HIS and V-EGW of CHN in carbon emissions stress. Finally, the proportions of different industries should be considered to evade misestimating the level of cleaner production in various industries during policymaking. Elucidating these mechanisms is essential to support decision-making that leads to sustainable development.

RESUMO

Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are widely distributed in aquatic environment, and the potential ecological risk of PFASs has become a new challenge in recent years. But there were few integrated studies about the distribution, source appointment and risk assessment of PFASs in water of lakes along the middle reach of Yangtze River, China. Hence, this study investigated the pollution characteristics, source apportionment, ecological risks assessment of eleven PFASs from the surface water in this region. The total concentrations of PFASs (∑PFASs) ranged from 12.43 to 77.44 ng L-1 in this region. The ∑PFASs in Hong and Poyang Lakes were higher than those in Dongting Lake and middle reach of Yangtze River (p < 0.05). The compositions of PFASs in the middle reach of Yangtze River and along three lakes were similar, being with a larger proportion of short-chain PFACs. The food packaging and metal plating sources were identified as the main sources by two models. The total risk quotients (∑RQs) showed the ecological risk for algae in the middle reach of Yangtze River, Dongting and Poyang Lakes were negligible, but the low risk in some sites of Hong Lake. The EDIs of ∑PFASs were much lower than the tolerable daily intake recommended by the European Food Safety Authority. The results of this study were significant for developing effective strategies (e.g. short-chain substitution and restriction) of controlling PFASs pollution in the middle reach of Yangtze River and along lakes.

RESUMO

The small size of microplastics and their wide distribution in water environments have attracted worldwide attention and heated discussion, because of their ingestion by aquatic organisms. At present, there are few studies on microplastics pollution in freshwater aquaculture ponds, especially shrimp ponds. In this study, the aquaculture ponds in the Pearl River Estuary were investigated. The abundance and composition of microplastics in different environmental media were studied to explore the potential sources and risk levels of microplastics, so as to provide basic data for the study of microplastics pollution in aquaculture ponds. Microplastics were observed in water and sediment samples at all sampling sites, with the abundance of 6.6 × 103-263.6 × 103 items/m3 (surface water) and 566.67-2500 items/kg (sediment), respectively. Thirty-seven individuals collected in six ponds belong to four species. Microplastics were observed in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of all fishes and shrimps, with the abundance ranging from 3-92 items/individual (fish) and 4-21 items/individual (shrimp). Among all samples, microplastics with the size range of <1 mm and fiber shape were the most common. The main microplastic components were cellulose, polypropylene (PP), and polyethylene (PE). The results of potential risk assessment showed that the pollution investigation of microplastics should not only consider the abundance. Low abundance does not mean low risk. Taking the toxicity score and abundance of microplastics as evaluation indexes to reflect the pollution status of microplastics may make the results more reliable.

RESUMO

Exposure of humans to parabens is widespread and urinary parabens are widely used as exposure biomarkers. However, are the levels of these chemicals suitable to assess exposure to parabens? We conducted an intervention study by controlling the use of personal care products (PCPs) to explore the exposure of parabens. Ten female participants were recruited who were treated with different types of PCPs during the 18-day study period. The concentrations of parabens and their metabolites in matrices of different exposure pathways (dust, drinking water and dietary food) and urine samples were determined. We demonstrated that PCPs were the major sources of parabens, accounting for >99% of total exposure. The metabolites were nonspecific to individual parabens and could not be used as exposure biomarkers. Urinary paraben concentrations were positively correlated with external exposure levels. However, poor reproducibility was observed, with intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) ranging from 0.125 to 0.295 in unadjusted urinary concentrations. Creatinine-adjusting could not significantly improve the ICC values in random spot samples. After adjusting for both creatinine and kinetic models, the ICC values ranged from 0.695 to 0.886, indicating a good reproducibility. So, toxicokinetic parameters may be taken into consideration for precise monitoring of exposures for the non-persistent pollutants.

RESUMO

The widespread use of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) in industries has resulted in its frequent detection in environmental matrices, and the mechanisms of its associated hazards need further investigation. In this study, the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) was exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of TBBPA (0, 0.1, 1, 10, 100, 200 µg/L) to determine its effects. At TBBPA concentrations above 1 µg/L, the number of head thrashes, as the most sensitive physiological indicator, decreased significantly. Using the Illumina HiSeq™ 2000 sequencer, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were determined, and 52 were down regulated and 105 were up regulated in the 200 µg/L TBBPA treatment group versus the control group. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway database analysis demonstrated that dorso-ventral axis formation is related to neurotoxicity; metabolism of xenobiotics by Cytochrome P450 (CYP450) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) was found to be the vital metabolic mechanisms and were confirmed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). GST was ascribed to the augmentation because mutations in cyp-13A7 were constrained under TBBPA exposure. Additionally, oxidative stress indicators accumulated in a dose-dependent relationship. These results will help understand the molecular basis for TBBPA-induced toxicity in C. elegans and open novel avenues for facilitating the exploration of more efficient strategies against TBBPA toxicity.
