RESUMO

To assess the impact of sand mining on resource utilization by the red seabream (Pagrus major) and the trophic structure of fish assemblages two years after mining activities, we compared stable isotope ratios (δ13C and δ15N) and isotopic niches between aggregated mining and control sites in April and August 2022. Our results showed no spatial differences in the δ13C and δ15N values of red seabream between the sand mining and control sites, suggesting that the mining did not affect their dietary resources. Furthermore, the considerable overlap among fish consumers suggested that the fish food web in mining areas has trophic functions similar to those in natural habitats after mining activities. Overall, our study enhances our understanding of ecosystem conservation and the ecological-based management of coastal areas.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia can be associated with the disease etiologies other than degenerative processes, such as neurologic disease including cerebral palsy, myelomeningocele, or Duchenne muscular dystrophy, even in children. Although the relationship between neurologic disease and scoliosis or ambulatory function is known, the mediators affecting scoliosis or gait function in these patients are unclear, an example might be sarcopenia. This study aimed to assess the degree of sarcopenia in young patients with neurologic diseases using computed tomography (CT), and analyze the correlation between sarcopenia and scoliosis or ambulatory function. METHODS: Pediatric and young adult patients (≤ 25 years old) who underwent whole-spine or lower-extremity CT were retrospectively included. From bilateral psoas muscle areas (PMAs) at the L3 level, the psoas muscle z-score (PMz) and psoas muscle index [PMI = PMA/(L3 height)²] were calculated. The t-test, Fisher's exact test, and logistic regression analyses were performed. RESULTS: A total of 121 patients (56 men, mean age 12.2 ± 3.7 years) were included with 79 neurologic and 42 non-neurologic diseases. Patients with neurologic diseases had lower PMz (P = 0.013) and PMI (P = 0.026) than patients without. In neurologic disease patients, severe scoliosis patients showed lower PMz (P < 0.001) and PMI (P = 0.001). Non-ambulatory patients (n = 42) showed lower BMI (ß = 0.727, P < 0.001) and PMz (ß = 0.547, P = 0.025). In non-ambulatory patients, patients with severe scoliosis also showed lower PMz (P < 0.001) and PMI (P = 0.004). CONCLUSION: Patients with neurologic diseases could have sarcopenia even in young age. Psoas muscle volume was also associated with ambulatory function in these patients. Sarcopenia was more severe in severe scoliosis patients in the non-ambulatory subgroup.

OBJECTIVE: E-detailing methods have steadily evolved toward more contactless and interactive channels, which have received considerable attention during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) crisis. Based on the technology acceptance model, this study attempted to identify medical representatives' perceptions and attitudes towards individual innovativeness that affected users' intentions to adopt new e-detailing devices utilizing information and communication technology. METHODS: The subjects of the current study were medical representatives at three major multinational or domestic pharmaceutical companies that operate in South Korea. In total, 300 questionnaires were distributed and 221 were returned. The survey elicited information on respondents' perceived ease of use (PEOU), perceived usefulness (PU), personal innovativeness (PI), and user acceptance (UA) of remote e-detailing technology, in addition to demographic information and occupational characteristics. Structural equation models were fitted to the data. Separate analyses were conducted for different platform types, PCs and mobile devices. RESULTS: PEOU showed a statistically significant positive association with PU. PEOU, PU, and PI were associated with UA, and PI was a statistically significant moderator. On average, PEOU explained up to approximately 45% of the total variation in UA of remote e-detailing. CONCLUSIONS: The analysis supports the framework of the technology acceptance model. PEOU was a substantially strong direct predictor of UA, and PI had a statistically significant, positive moderating effect between PU and UA. Medical representatives with pro-innovative attitudes are more likely to play the role of early adopters of remote e-detailing if they find this technology to be more useful.

Microalgae have the potential to utilize the nutrients in livestock urine and manure (LUM) for the production of useful biomass, which can be used as a source of bioindustry. This study aims to evaluate the economic benefits of LUM feedstock that have not been clearly discussed before. Two types of photobioreactors were designed with a capacity of 200 m3 d-1. Using the experimental data, the economic feasibility of the suggested processes was evaluated via techno-economic analysis. Itemized cost estimation indicated that the submerged membrane photobioreactor has a lower unit production cost (5.4 $ to 5.1 $ kg-1) than the conventional photobioreactor system (14.6 $ to 13.8 $ kg-1). In addition, LUM-based growth is another good option for reducing the unit production cost of biomass. The revenues from lowering the cost of LUM treatment significantly contribute to enhancing the economic profitability, where the break-even prices were 1.18 $ m-3 (photobioreactor) and 0.98 $ m-3 (submerged membrane photobioreactor). Finally, this study provides several emerging suggestions to reduce microalgal biomass production costs.

Environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding is a cost-effective novel approach to estimate biodiversity in an ecosystem. In this study, the MiFish pipeline was employed to test if the system methodology is sufficiently reliable to estimate fish biodiversity in Korean rivers. A total of 125 unique haplotypes and 73 species were identified at the species level from 16 water samples collected from a single survey in four Korean rivers (Hyeongsan, Taehwa, Seomjin, and Nakdong). Among the four rivers, the highest species richness was recorded in the Seomjin River (52 species), followed by the Taehwa (42 species) and Hyeongsan (40 species) rivers. The Nakdong River (26 species) presented the lowest species richness and number of endemic species, presumably due to its metropolitan location and anthropogenic impacts, such as dams or weirs. We were also able to detect that five exotic species (Carassius cuvieri, Cyprinus carpio, Cyprinus megalophthalmus, Lepomis macrochirus, and Micropterus salmoides) are widely distributed in all surveyed rivers, a situation that might be problematic in terms of conservation. Our findings indicate that the eDNA metabarcoding technique is one of the most cost-effective scientific tools available for the management and conservation of the freshwater fish resources available in Korea. However, the low number of 12S sequences of endemic species in the database and low resolution of the MiFish region for differentiating several taxa should be upgraded for their wide use.

Tetraselmis is a green algal genus, some of whose species are important in aquaculture as well as biotechnology. In algal culture, fluorescent lamps, traditional light source for culturing algae, are now being replaced by a cost-effective light-emitting diodes (LEDs). In this study, we investigated the effect of LED light of different wavelengths (white, red, yellow, and blue) on the growth of Tetraselmis suecica and its associated microbial community structures using the next-generation sequencing (NGS). The fastest growth rate of T. suecica was shown in the red light, whereas the slowest was in yellow. The highest OTUs (3426) were identified on day 0, whereas the lowest ones (308) were found on day 15 under red light. The top 100 OTUs associated with day 0 and day 5 cultures of T. suecica under the red and yellow LED were compared. Only 26 OTUs were commonly identified among four samples. The highest numbers of unique OTUs were identified at day 0, indicating the high degree of initial microbial diversity of the T. suecica inoculum. The red light-unique OTUs occupied 34.98%, whereas the yellow-specific OTUs accounted for only 2.2%. This result suggested a higher degree of interaction in T. suecica culture under the red light, where stronger photosynthesis occurs. Apparently, the microbial community associated with T. suecica related to the oxygen produced by algal photosynthesis. This result may expand our knowledge about the algaebacteria consortia, which would be useful for various biotechnological applications including wastewater treatment, bioremediation, and sustainable aquaculture.

The simplified direct-transesterification (DT) process was compared to the conventional biodiesel production process based on a reported previous experimental work with economic standpoint. Based on the process flow diagram, capital and operating costs were itemized properly and then unit biodiesel production cost was calculated. The results show the biodiesel production costs were 18.2 $ kg-1 (conventional process) and 12.5 $ kg-1 (DT process), respectively. Sensitivity analysis shows the source of biomass and chemical consumption are the major factors to determine total biodiesel production cost. The affecting factors were a solvent recycling, yield of biodiesel, and plant capacity and these values were varied to evaluate the variation of unit biodiesel production cost. As a result, the maximized biodiesel production cost went down to 3.5 $ kg-1, which is cost-competitive with other reported values of production cost.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between juvenile hallux valgus (JHV) and flatfoot has not been clearly established. The aim of this study was to assess radiographic measurements in feet with JHV compared with matched controls and to investigate whether the foot alignment of JHV is related to flatfoot. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 163 patients with JHV as defined as hallux valgus angle greater than 20 degrees and intermetatarsal greater than angle than 10 degrees. Patients with open physes of the feet and who had weight-bearing radiographs of the feet were included. Another 55 normal participants served as controls. Patients with JHV were divided into 2 subgroups: Group 1 included patients with asymptomatic JHV and group 2 consisted of those treated with correctional surgery for painful JHV. Twelve radiographic indices were analyzed, including calcaneal pitch angle, tibiocalcaneal angle, talocalcaneal angle, naviculocuboid overlap, talonavicular coverage angle, lateral talo-first metatarsal angle, anteroposterior talo-first metatarsal angle, metatarsus adductus angle, hallux valgus angle, intermetatarsal angle, distal metatarsal articular angle, and first metatarsal cuneiform angle. The groups were compared by age, gender, and the above radiographic parameters. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in hindfoot alignment of patients with JHV and controls. Naviculocuboid overlap (P <.001), lateral talo-first metatarsal angle (P = .002), and metatarsus adductus angle (P = .004) were significantly greater in patients with JHV than in controls, whereas the anteroposterior talo-first metatarsal angle (P = .026) was significantly less. Symptomatic and asymptomatic JHV patient subsets showed no significant radiologic differences. CONCLUSION: Radiographic profiles in patients with JHV were inconsistent with regard to features of flatfoot, and foot alignment was unrelated to the presence of symptoms or degree of deformity in JHV. Various methods for isolation of type I collagen using acids, bases, enzymes, and their combinations have been applied. However, a lack of standardization exists among type I collagens isolated by various approaches. Consequently, in this study, we assessed the influence of acetic acid residue on type I collagen isolated by pepsin-acetic acid treatment, the fabrication of collagen-based porous scaffolds, and the seeded cells on collagen scaffolds. Unlike the isolated collagen dialyzed by deionized water (DDW), collagen dialyzed by 0.5 M acetic acid (DAC) exhibited structural and thermal denaturation. Both DDW- and DAC-based porous scaffolds at all collagen concentrations (0.5, 1 and 2% w/v) showed the high degree of porosity (>98%), and their pore morphologies were comparable at the same concentrations. However, the DDW- and DAC-based collagen scaffolds displayed significant differences in their physical properties (weight, thickness, and volume) and swelling behaviors. In particular, the weight losses induced by mechanical stimulation reflected the high degradation of DAC-collagen scaffolds. In cell culture experiments using adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs), the characteristics of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) did not change in both DDW- and DAC-collagen scaffolds for 10 days, although cells proliferated less in the DAC-collagen scaffolds. Our results suggest that the elimination of acetic acid residue from isolated collagen is recommended to produce collagen scaffolds that provide a stable environment for cells and cell therapy-related applications.

We developed a cost-effective metabarcoding strategy to analyze phytoplankton community structure using the Illumina MiSeq system. The amplicons (404-411 bp) obtained by end-pairing of two reads were sufficiently long to distinguish algal species and provided barcode data equivalent to those generated with the Roche 454 system, but at less than 1/20th of the cost. The original universal primer sequences targeting the 23S rDNA region and the PCR strategy were both modified, and this resulted in higher numbers of eukaryotic algal sequences by excluding non-photosynthetic proteobacterial sequences supporting effectiveness of this strategy. The novel strategy was used to analyze the phytoplankton community structure of six water samples from the East/Japan Sea: surface and 50 m depths at coastal and open-sea sites, with collections in May and July 2014. In total, 345 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were identified, which covered most of the prokaryotic and eukaryotic algal phyla, including Dinophyta, Rhodophyta, Ochrophyta, Chlorophyta, Streptophyta, Cryptophyta, Haptophyta, and Cyanophyta. This highlights the importance of plastid 23S primers, which perform better than the currently used 16S primers for phytoplankton community surveys. The findings also revealed that more efforts should be made to update 23S rDNA sequences as well as those of 16S in the databases. Analysis of algal proportions in the six samples showed that community structure differed depending on location, depth and season. Across the six samples evaluated, the numbers of OTUs in each phylum were similar but their relative proportions varied. This novel strategy would allow laboratories to analyze large numbers of samples at reasonable expense, whereas this has not been possible to date due to cost and time. In addition, we expect that this strategy will generate a large amount of novel data that could potentially change established methods and tools that are currently used in the realms of oceanography and marine ecology.

OBJECTIVE: To determine and compare autonomic dysfunction in patients with chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS). METHODS: The subjects were 30-60 years old and had no known systemic disease. Electrocardiographic signals in the patients in the resting state were obtained from 59 patients with CP/CPPS (age 46.5 ± 7.02 years) and 94 healthy subjects (age 48.4 ± 5.96 years), and heart rate variability parameters were compared. RESULTS: The standard deviation of the N-N interval (P < .001), square root of the mean squared differences of the successive N-N intervals (P = .004), total power (P = .004), very low frequency (P = .012), and high frequency (P < .001) were lower in the patients with CP/CPPS. However, no significant differences were found in the low frequency and low frequency/high frequency ratios. CONCLUSION: Patients with CP/CPPS exhibited lower heart rate variability parameters compared with normal controls, with the exception of low frequency and low frequency/high frequency ratios. Possible differences in autonomic nervous system between those with CP/CPPS and normal healthy subjects could exist and autonomic dysfunction might be 1 of the causes that aggravates CP/CPPS.
