RESUMO

Few studies have examined the role of BAG2 in malignancies. We investigated the prognostic value of BAG2-expression in cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) and tumor cells in predicting metastasis-free survival in patients with breast cancer. Tissue-microarray was constructed using human breast cancer tissues obtained by surgical resection between 1992 and 2015. BAG2 expression was evaluated by immunohistochemistry in CAFs or the tumor cells. BAG2 expression in the CAFs and cytoplasm of tumor cells was classified as positive and negative, and low and high, respectively. BAG2-CAF was evaluated in 310 patients and was positive in 67 (21.6%) patients. Kaplan-Meier plots showed that distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS) was lesser in patients with BAG2(+) CAF than in patients with BAG2(-) CAF (p = 0.039). Additionally, we classified the 310 patients into two groups: 109 in either BAG2-high or BAG2(+) CAF and 201 in BAG2-low and BAG2(-) CAF. DMFS was significantly reduced in patients with either BAG2-high or BAG2(+) CAF than in the patients of the other group (p = 0.005). Multivariable analysis demonstrated that DMFS was prolonged in patients with BAG2(-) CAF or BAG2-low. Evaluation of BAG2 expression on both CAFs and tumor cells could help in determining the risk of metastasis in breast cancer.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Several tools can provide a reliable and accurate evaluation of pruritus, including the visual analog scale (VAS), numeric rating scale (NRS), verbal rating scale (VRS), and multidimensional questionnaires such as the Itch Severity Scale (ISS). However, no single method is considered a gold standard. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the validity and reliability of VAS, NRS, VRS, and ISS and their correlation with a pruritus-specific quality of life instrument, ItchyQoL. METHODS: A total of 419 patients (215 men and 204 women) with chronic pruritus (mean age, 46.58 years) recorded their pruritus intensity on VAS, NRS, VRS, and ISS. Retest reliability was analyzed in a second assessment 3 hours after the initial assessment. All participants answered ItchyQoL. RESULTS: A strong correlation between VAS, NRS, and VRS was found. ISS showed a low intercorrelation validity with these tools. However, ISS was more strongly correlated with ItchyQoL. The retest reliability scores were similar for VAS, NRS, and VRS but lower than the scores obtained for ISS. LIMITATIONS: Limitations include patient heterogeneity and recall bias. CONCLUSION: The assessment of pruritus is challenging because of the subjective symptoms and the multifactorial nature. Therefore, more studies are needed to determine the best strategy to assess itch intensity.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound (US)-based T staging of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC). METHODS: From January to June 2013, a total of 185 patients underwent preoperative thyroid US for the treatment of thyroid malignancy. A single radiologist immediately determined sonographic T staging for PTMC during real-time US examination. Based on histopathologic results, the diagnostic accuracy of sonographic T staging for PTMC and the difference in the frequency of level VI node metastasis according to the T stage of PTMC were evaluated. RESULTS: Of 105 PTMC cases, the preoperative sonographic diagnoses included intraglandular location (n = 35), subcapsular location (n = 30), mild capsule abutment (n = 7), moderate capsule abutment (n = 19), and perithyroidal invasion without adjacent strap muscle invasion (n = 14). When the sonographic T stages were compared with histopathologic results, all the sonographic categories showed high specificity and low sensitivity. The intraglandular and subcapsular location cases in preoperative US diagnosis showed a low rate of extrathyroidal tumor invasion (6.2%, 4/65). The extrathyroidal tumor invasion cases in preoperative US diagnosis only included 26 extrathyroidal fat invasion cases, and 12 (46.2%, 12/26) true positives. There was a significant correlation between multifocality and histopathologic T stage, but no significant relationship between level VI node metastasis and histopathologic T stage was found. CONCLUSION: The sonographic T staging categorization described here may be helpful for the preoperative evaluation of PTMC patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a common hair loss disease with genetic predisposition among men and women, and it may commence at any age after puberty. It may significantly affect a variety of psychological and social aspects of one's life and the individual's overall quality of life (QoL). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the QoL of AGA patients and discover the factors that can influence the QoL of AGA patients, including previous experience in non-medical hair care, reasons for hospital visits, age, duration, and the severity of AGA. METHODS: A total of 998 male patients with AGA were interviewed, using the Hair Specific Skindex-29 to evaluate the QoL of AGA patients. RESULTS: The results of the Hair Specific Skindex-29 on patients with AGA were as follows: symptom scale: 26.3±19.5, function scale: 24.0±20.1, emotion scale: 32.1±21.8, and global score: 27.3±19.1. According to this assessment, QoL was more damaged if the patient had severe alopecia, a longer duration of AGA, younger age, had received previous non-medical hair care, and visited the hospital for AGA treatment. CONCLUSION: This study showed that AGA could harmfully affect the patients' QoL. These findings indicate that dermatologists should address these QoL issues when treating patients with alopecia.
