RESUMO

BACKGROUND: As Korea has experienced rapid economic development, the lifestyles of Koreans have become more Westernized, in terms of urbanization and dietary habits. Also, the prevalences of allergic diseases, such as rhinitis, asthma, and dermatitis, have increased rapidly. This study aimed to identify the factors influencing the symptoms of rhinitis conditions, including rhinitis, allergic rhinitis, overlapped rhinitis, and overlapped allergic rhinitis, among Korean children aged 6-7 years. METHODS: The study subjects were drawn from participants in the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) study in 2010 and were aged 6-7 years. We analysed data for a total of 3804 children. RESULTS: The prevalences of symptoms suggestive of rhinitis and allergic rhinitis in the previous 12 months were 43.4% and 22.1%, respectively. For overlapped rhinitis and overlapped allergic rhinitis, only 2.5% and 1.9% of the children had overlapping symptoms, having rhinitis with asthma and eczema simultaneously. Gender, a parental history of allergic disease, mould or dampness at home, and the risk factors for 'sick building syndrome' (SBS) were risk factors influencing rhinitis diseases. In particular, a history of moving to a newly built home in the child's infancy was strongly associated with symptoms of all the rhinitis diseases examined. CONCLUSIONS: This study identified patterns of the prevalence of rhinitis conditions among Korean children that were similar to those reported in Western countries. We confirmed that a history of moving to a newly built home during infancy was associated with a considerable risk of rhinitis conditions.

RESUMO

1. The aim of this study was to assess bone characteristics in restricted ovulator (RO) hens. These hens generally are unable to ovulate due to a point mutation in the oocyte VLDL receptor gene whose protein product mediates the uptake of yolk precursors. Because these hens do not have the cyclic calcium (Ca) metabolism associated with egg formation, they could be a useful model for studying bone metabolism. 2. RO hens had greater humerus, femur and tibia ash concentrations than wild-type (WT) and out-of-production (OP) hens. Bone mineral content and density obtained with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) were highly correlated with the results of conventional bone assays. 3. Gross and histological examination of the femurs confirmed the presence of extremely dense medullary bone deposition in the RO hens. However, the composition of non-collagenous protein extracts of medullary bone was similar for the two genotypes. 4. Analysis of medullary bone extracts for glycosaminoglycans (GAG) confirmed the presence of large amounts of keratan sulphate (KS) in the matrix of medullary bone. 5. Plasma Ca, total GAG and KS concentrations of RO hens were markedly higher than WT and OP hens. The changes in plasma calcium and keratan sulphate are probably a reflection of elevated Ca-binding yolk precursor molecules and intensive medullary bone formation in response to increased plasma oestrogen observed by others in RO hens.

RESUMO

We describe an efficient high-throughput method for accurate DNA sequencing of entire cDNA clones. Developed as part of our involvement in the Mammalian Gene Collection full-length cDNA sequencing initiative, the method has been used and refined in our laboratory since September 2000. Amenable to large scale projects, we have used the method to generate >7 Mb of accurate sequence from 3695 candidate full-length cDNAs. Sequencing is accomplished through the insertion of Mu transposon into cDNAs, followed by sequencing reactions primed with Mu-specific sequencing primers. Transposon insertion reactions are not performed with individual cDNAs but rather on pools of up to 96 clones. This pooling strategy reduces the number of transposon insertion sequencing libraries that would otherwise be required, reducing the costs and enhancing the efficiency of the transposon library construction procedure. Sequences generated using transposon-specific sequencing primers are assembled to yield the full-length cDNA sequence, with sequence editing and other sequence finishing activities performed as required to resolve sequence ambiguities. Although analysis of the many thousands (22 785) of sequenced Mu transposon insertion events revealed a weak sequence preference for Mu insertion, we observed insertion of the Mu transposon into 1015 of the possible 1024 5mer candidate insertion sites.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to develop a cost-effective protocol for the mobilization of peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) in patients with malignancy. Thirty consecutive patients were randomized to mobilize PBSC with the late addition of a standard 250 microg dose of G-CSF (Neutrogen) from day 8 or early addition of the same dose of G-CSF from day 2, following cyclophosphamide (CY) 4 g/m2. The median yield of CD34+ cells from evaluated patients was 7.87 x 10(6)/kg (range, 2.06-27.25), collected in a median of four apheresis (range, 2-9). Target CD34 + cell doses > or = 2.0 x 10(6)/kg were achieved in all patients able to be evaluated. There were no statistically significant differences in CD34+ cell yields or toxicities. Overall engraftment occurred with median days to neutrophils > or = 0.5 x 10(9)/L or platelets > 20 x 10(9)/L of 11 and 17 days, respectively. However, the duration of G-CSF administration was markedly shorter in the late use of G-CSF group than in the early use of G-CSF group, with a median of 9 days compared with 15 days (p<0.001). PBSC harvesting after priming with CY plus delayed use of G-CSF made it a safe and cost-effective procedure.

RESUMO

PIP: Until the 1950s, almost all Korean infants were breast fed until they were 6 months old. By the 1960s, upper-middle class mothers who were influenced by rapid Westernization were feeding their infants with imported formulas. As the Korean food industry made formulas widely available in the late 1960s and 1970s, bottle feeding became widely practiced. Babies born in hospitals were given formula immediately. A 1984 survey of 930 urban mothers showed that reasons for bottle feeding were an insufficient amount of breast milk or mother's employment but that breast milk was considered superior. With the recent promotion of breast feeding, Korean infants today are fed breast milk, formula, or a combination of the two. Mother's education and employment are negatively associated with breast feeding. A 1991 survey showed that 20% of breast-fed infants received weaning foods at 3 months of age and 76% by 6 months. Bottle-fed infants were weaned earlier than breast-fed infants. Regional differences in weaning practices were observed. Weaning foods included fruit and vegetable juices (2-3 months), rice (4-6 months), and eggs, fish, and meat (after 7 months). The use of commercial weaning foods is increasing. Research has indicated that breast feeding reduces morbidity in Korean infants and may be positively related to motor and mental development (but economic factors may account for the differences noted). Breast feeding should be promoted among Korean infants.^ieng

RESUMO

We have developed and validated a gradient-layer calorimeter for direct measurement of energy expenditure of preterm infants. Infant calorimeters must be operated and tested differently from adult calorimeters, because the calorimeter must be warmed during operation to limit heat loss from the infant, the calorimeter wall temperature (which is selected on the basis of the infant's maturity) must be precisely controlled, and energy expenditure (heat output) is typically < 10 W. We calibrated our calorimeter by varying the heat produced by a dry source (manikin or light bulb) with airflow (n = 42) and without airflow (n = 8) at various water jacket temperatures (n = 7) and by a wet source (combustion of ethyl alcohol) with airflow (n = 9). With no air moving, qc = 0.740 Vc + 0.029 Twj-0.697, where qc (W) is the estimated output of the heat source measured by the calorimeter, Vc (mV) is the gradient-layer voltage of the calorimeter, and Twj (degree C) is the temperature of the water jacket surrounding the walls of the device. From this equation and enthalpy calculations, the slope and intercept of the regression line relating the estimated heat production to the actual heat produced from alcohol combustion are 1.029 +/- 0.046 and -0.549 +/- 0.484 (SE), respectively. The slope is not significantly different from unity, and the intercept is not significantly different from zero. Thus we can accurately estimate the energy expenditure of preterm infants from the equations describing our calorimeter, and we can accurately resolve the total heat output into a dry (nonevaporative) component and a wet (evaporative) component.

RESUMO

Rapid economic development resulted in urbanization of Korea, since 1960s. Seoul is the center of politics, finance, education and culture of Korea. Mostly young people have migrated to large cities, such as Seoul and Pusan. For instance, the population in Seoul city was 2.5 million in 1960 but increased to 10 million in 1990. Presently, total population of Seoul and Pusan, second largest city, composed of approximately 50% of whole national population. The economic distribution among urban people became extremely uneven creating a large gap between low and high income group. As a consequence, both under and over nutritional problems coexist. According to the national nutrition survey data, animal food, such as meat, fish and dairy products have been consumed about 6 times more, and cereal consumption was far less in higher income group. In terms of nutrients intake, 28% of total caloric intake comes from lipids and 15-17% of total caloric intake from protein. This was found in higher income group, while low income group consumed more than 80% of total caloric intake from carbohydrate. The trends of major causes of death in Korea have changed. The degenerative diseases, cerebral disorder, high blood pressure became leading cause of death in recent years. Malignant neoplasm and diabetes followed second leading cause of death in Korea. Undernutrition and nutritional insufficiencies, anemia and low growth rate continue to exist among low income group. According to the annual death rate by age group, the age between 34-54 was the highest in the world.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
