RESUMO

Indian agriculture transitioned from a food deficit sector to a food surplus following the Green Revolution. However, the continued progress of Indian agriculture has been hampered by climate change. This research explores the district-wise vulnerability in Madhya Pradesh, India, to climate change by assessing the composite vulnerability index using the agricultural vulnerability index (AVI) and socio-economic vulnerability index (SEVI). The study seeks to understand how agricultural and socio-economic factors lead to variations in vulnerability across districts and influence targeted adaptation and mitigation strategies. The trend analysis results present declining rainfall and inclining temperature from 1951 to 2021 in Madhya Pradesh, directly affecting the agricultural sector and human livelihood. The composite vulnerability index (CVI) results revealed that districts with low values (< 0.394), such as Burhanpur and Balaghat, demonstrate reduced susceptibility due to limited cultivation, low reliance on rainfall, lower drought susceptibility, and decreased population density. Districts such as Panna and Bhopal show moderate vulnerability (0.394-0.423), with lower fallow land, reduced rainfed agriculture, and socio-economic vulnerability. Extensive agriculture and marginalised workers' presence influence high vulnerability (0.423 to 0.456) in districts such as Tikamgarh and Indore. Districts like Barwani and Jhabua have the highest CVI values (> 0.456), indicating substantial susceptibility to climate impacts. The cluster analysis validates the results of the vulnerability index. The findings highlight the urgent need for tailored adaptation strategies to address the diverse agricultural and socio-economic indicators creating vulnerability in Madhya Pradesh. The study helps understand regional vulnerability patterns and provides evidence-based policy approaches for resilience to climate change effects.

RESUMO

The highly conserved protease enzyme from SARS-CoV-2 (MPro) is crucial for viral replication and is an attractive target for the design of novel inhibitory compounds. MPro is known to be conformationally flexible and has been stabilized in an extended conformation in a complex with a novel nanobody (NB2B4), which inhibits the dimerization of the enzyme via binding to an allosteric site. However, the energetic contributions of the nanobody residues stabilizing the MPro/nanobody interface remain unresolved. We probed these residues using all-atom MD simulations in combination with alchemical free energy calculations by studying the physical residue-residue interactions and discovered the role of hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions in stabilizing the complex. Specifically, we found via mutational analysis that three interfacial nanobody residues (Y59, R106, and L109) contributed significantly, two residues (L107 and P110) contributed moderately, and two residues (H112 and T113) contributed minimally to the overall binding affinity of the nanobody. We also discovered that the nanobody affinity could be enhanced via a charge-reversal mutation (D62R) that alters the local interfacial electrostatic environment of this residue in the complex. These findings are potentially useful in designing novel synthetic nanobodies as allosteric inhibitors of MPro.

Magnesium, which is lightweight and abundant by nature, was widely used in the 19th century to make parts for automobiles and airplanes. Due to their superior strength-to-weight ratios, magnesium alloys were favored for engineering applications over unadulterated magnesium. These alloys result from the combination of magnesium with various metals, including aluminum (Al), titanium (Ti), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), calcium (Ca), lithium (Li), and zirconium (Zr). In this study, an alloy of magnesium was created using the powder metallurgy (PM) technique, and its optimal performance was determined through the Taguchi-Gray (TG) analysis method. To enhance the alloy's mechanical properties, diverse weight fractions of silicon carbide (SiC) were introduced. The study primarily focused on the Mg-Zn-Cu-Mn alloy, achieving the optimal composition of Mg-3Zn-1Cu-0.7Mn (ZC-31). Subsequently, composites of ZC-31/SiC were produced via PM and the hot extrusion (HE) process, followed by the assessment of the mechanical properties under various strain rates. The use of silicon carbide (SiC) resulted in enhanced composite densities as a consequence of the increased density exhibited by SiC particles. In addition, the high-energy postsintering approach resulted in a decrease in porosity levels. By integrating silicon carbide (SiC) to boost the microhardness, as well as the ultimate compressive and tensile strength of the composite material, we can observe significant improvements in these mechanical properties. The experimental findings also demonstrated that an augmentation in the weight fraction of SiC and the strain rate led to enhanced ductility and a shift toward a more transcrystalline fracture behavior inside the composite material.

This study used the entropy water quality index to analyse the suitability of groundwater for human consumption as well as the hazard index to identify the probable non-carcinogenic dangers among children, women, and men in Nawada, Bihar (India). A total of 75 groundwater samples were taken from hand pumps and tube/bore wells in the pre-monsoon of 2017, and they were evaluated for various physicochemical characteristics. The region's groundwater major cations and anions are dominated by Ca2+ > Mg2+ and [Formula: see text] > Cl- > [Formula: see text] > NO3- > F > [Formula: see text]. Fluoride, chloride, and hardness exceeded WHO and BIS safe standards. Calcium, sodium, magnesium, sulphate, and chloride showed positive correlations, indicating water-rock interactions and mineral leaching and dissolution. Ionic cross-plots reveal that the dissolution of carbonate minerals was the primary source of calcium and magnesium in the groundwater. Also, silicate weathering contributed to these ions in the groundwater. The entropy water quality index (EWQI) found that 79% of groundwater samples were drinkable, whereas 21% were not consumable. The eastern, western, and some southern study areas have the worst drinking water quality. The main source of fluoride toxicity in people is groundwater. For all sampling locations, the HQ fluoride was calculated to be in the ranges of 0.04-3.69 (male), 0.04-3.27 (female), and 0.05-4 (children), indicating a considerably greater risk than the permissible levels (> 1). The fluoride-based non-carcinogenic risks are 27%, 20%, and 21% for children, women, and men, respectively. Children have higher risks from polluted water than adults, according to the non-carcinogenic health risk assessment. This study establishes a standard for regional and global scientific studies that help decision-makers and planners determine the quality of groundwater and fluoride risk and management.

The cost function in the iterative optimization algorithms is one of the sensitive optimization controllers that plays a crucial role in feedback based wavefront shaping for constructing well-resolved complex structured light through scattering media. There has been a trade-off between resolution and the contrast enhancement of the structured light in wavefront shaping. We have developed an ℓ 2-norm based quadratic cost function (L2QN) and proposed a regularized cost function (RCF) for advancing the contrast and maintaining the high resolution of structured light. Both the simulations and experiments have been performed, and it has been found that the proposed RCF significantly advances the contrast and structural uniformity for focusing light through scattering media as well as for diffused reflection mode. The potential applications of the method demonstrated in this study can be extended into holographic displays, structured light illumination microscopy, photo-lithography, photothermal treatments, dosimetry, laser materials processing, and energy control inside and outside an incubation system.

Anthropogenic land use and land cover changes are major drivers of environmental degradation and declining soil health across heterogeneous landscapes in Central India. To examines the land cover changes and spatio-temporal variations in forest carbon stock and soil organic carbon (SOC) over the past 25 years in central India. Geospatial techniques, coupled with ground measurements were employed to detect changes in land cover, carbon stocks in vegetation, and soil carbon in various vegetation types. The results indicate that forested areas have decreased, while agriculture and habitation have expanded between 1997 and 2022. Vegetation C stocks varied significantly (P < 0.05) from 39.42 to 139.95 Mg ha-1 and the SOC varied from 7.02 to 17.98 Mg ha-1 under different soil profiles across vegetation types, which decreased with soil depth, while the pH and bulk density increased. The maximum bulk density in the soil was found at a depth of 40-60 cm (lower profile) in Bamboo Brake, while the minimum was observed under Dense Mixed Forest at a depth of 0-20 cm (top profile). The topsoil profile contributed 33.6%-39%, the middle profile (20-40 cm) was 33.6%-34.4%, and the lower profile was 26.5%-30.8% of soil organic carbon. The study site has experienced rapid carbon losses due to changes in land cover, such as illegal expansion of agriculture, encroachments into forest fringes, and activities like selective logging and overgrazing, which have degraded dense forests. The ecological engineering of degraded ecosystems poses a great challenge and application of complex biological, mechanical and engineering measures is highly cumbersome, expensive, uneconomical and practically not feasible for upscaling. Nevertheless, proposed nature-based solutions mimic natural reparation and processes provide sustainable interventions for the reclamation of ruined landscapes besides improving ecological integrity and rendering many co-benefits to ecosystems and human societies.

Keeping negative interpersonal secrets can diminish well-being, yet people nevertheless keep negative information secret from friends, family, and loved ones to protect their own reputations. Twelve experiments suggest these reputational concerns are systematically miscalibrated, creating a misplaced barrier to honesty in relationships. In hypothetical scenarios (Experiments 1, S1, and S2), laboratory experiments (Experiments 2 and 6), and field settings (Experiments 3 and 4), those who imagined revealing, or who actually revealed, negative information they were keeping secret expected to be judged significantly more harshly than recipients expected to judge, or actually judged, them. We theorized that revealers' pessimistic expectations stem not only from the cognitive accessibility of negative information (Experiment S3) but also from a perspective gap such that the negative outcomes of disclosing this information, compared to positive outcomes, are more accessible for prospective revealers than for recipients. Consistent with this mechanism, revealers' expectations were better calibrated when directed to focus on positive thoughts or when they considered revealing positive information (Experiments 5, 6, and S4). Revealers' miscalibrated expectations matter because they can guide decisions about whether to reveal information or conceal it as a secret (Experiment S5). As predicted, calibrating revealers' expectations increased their willingness to reveal negative information to others (Experiment 7), suggesting that miscalibrated fears of others' judgment create a misplaced barrier to honesty in relationships. Overestimating the reputational costs of disclosing negative information might leave people carrying a heavier burden of secrecy than would be optimal for their own well-being. Diffuse sclerosing variant papillary thyroid carcinoma (DS-PTC) is characterized clinically by a predilection for children and young adults, bulky neck nodes, and pulmonary metastases. Previous studies have suggested infrequent BRAFV600E mutation but common RET gene rearrangements. Using strict criteria, we studied 43 DS-PTCs (1.9% of unselected PTCs in our unit). Seventy-nine percent harbored pathogenic gene rearrangements involving RET, NTRK3, NTRK1, ALK, or BRAF; with the remainder driven by BRAFV600E mutations. All 10 pediatric cases were all gene rearranged (P = .02). Compared with BRAFV600E-mutated tumors, gene rearrangement was characterized by psammoma bodies involving the entire lobe (P = .038), follicular predominant or mixed follicular architecture (P = .003), pulmonary metastases (24% vs none, P = .04), and absent classical, so-called "BRAF-like" atypia (P = .014). There was no correlation between the presence of gene rearrangement and recurrence-free survival. Features associated with persistent/recurrent disease included pediatric population (P = .030), gene-rearranged tumors (P = .020), microscopic extrathyroidal extension (P = .009), metastases at presentation (P = .007), and stage II disease (P = .015). We conclude that DS-PTC represents 1.9% of papillary thyroid carcinomas and that actionable gene rearrangements are extremely common in DS-PTC. DS-PTC can be divided into 2 distinct molecular subtypes and all BRAFV600E-negative tumors (1.5% of papillary thyroid carcinomas) are driven by potentially actionable oncogenic fusions.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the association between hospital participation in Bundled Payments for Care Improvement (BPCI) or Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement (CJR) and the timely initiation of home health rehabilitation services for lower extremity joint replacements. Furthermore, this study examined the association between the timely initiation of home health rehabilitation services with improvement in self-care, mobility, and 90-day hospital readmission. METHOD: This retrospective cohort study used Medicare inpatient claims and home health assessment data from 2016 to 2017 for older adults discharged to home with home health following hospitalization after joint replacement. Multilevel multivariate logistic regression was used to examine the association between hospital participation in BPCI or CJR programs and timely initiation of home health rehabilitation service. A 2-staged generalized boosted model was used to examine the association between delay in home health initiation and improvement in self-care, mobility, and 90-day risk-adjusted hospital readmission. RESULTS: Compared with patients discharged from hospitals that did not have BPCI or CJR, patients discharged from hospitals with these programs had a lower likelihood of delayed initiation of home health rehabilitation services for both knees and hip replacement. Using propensity scores as the inverse probability of treatment weights, delay in the initiation of home health rehabilitation services was associated with lower improvement in self-care (odds ratio [OR] = 1.23; 95% CI = 1.20-1.26), mobility (OR = 1.15; 95% CI = 1.13-1.18), and higher rate of 90-day hospital readmission (OR = 1.19; 95% CI = 1.15-1.24) for knee replacement. Likewise, delayed initiation of home health rehabilitation services was associated with lower improvement in self-care (OR = 1.16; 95% CI = 1.13-1.20) and mobility (OR = 1.26; 95% CI = 1.22-1.30) for hip replacement. CONCLUSION: Hospital participation in BPCI or comprehensive CJR was associated with early home health rehabilitation care initiation, which was further associated with significant increases in functional recovery and lower risks of hospital readmission. IMPACT: Policy makers may consider incentivizing health care providers to initiate early home health services and care coordination in value-based payment models.

The limitation of renewable energy is its fluctuation with time, season, and peak load demand. Hence, most of the research was carried using demand side management to reduce the actual consumption load to lower the peak load. This will also hamper the basic energy need of the facility. Therefore, the objective of the present study is to model a hybrid renewable energy system (HRES) to attain the specific consumption of a community health centre (CHC) in Yomcha, Arunachal Pradesh, with load shedding. The optimization of HRES is performed on HOMER® Pro software along with the demand side management algorithm and a maximum annual capacity shortage of 5%. Three different cases were compared based on feasibility, economics, and environmental basis to estimate the performance of the HRES. The results show that the proposed model is appropriate for the CHC over the previously proposed system. Moreover, HRES with (design-side management) DSM will reduce the overall cost and increase efficiency and reliability with an net present value of Rs. 3013482 and a cost of energy of Rs. 5.42/kW, renewable fraction 78%, internal rate of return 70%, return of investment 66%, and payback period of 1.4 years. Moreover, it reduces emissions, controls overloading during peak hours, and decreases load shifting. The study also supports the sustainable development goal (SDG)-7 set by the United Nation SDG Committee.

An estimated 2.4 million newborn infants died in 2020, 80% of them in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. To achieve the Sustainable Development Target for neonatal mortality reduction, countries with high mortality need to implement evidence-based, cost-effective interventions at scale. Our study aimed to estimate the cost, cost-effectiveness, and benefit-cost ratio of a participatory women's groups intervention scaled up by the public health system in Jharkhand, eastern India. The intervention was evaluated through a pragmatic cluster non-randomised controlled trial in six districts. We estimated the cost of the intervention at scale from a provider perspective, with a 42-month time horizon for 20 districts. We estimated costs using a combination of top-down and bottom-up approaches. All costs were adjusted for inflation, discounted at 3% per year, and converted to 2020 International Dollars (INT$). Incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) were estimated using extrapolated effect sizes for the impact of the intervention in 20 districts, in terms of cost per neonatal deaths averted and cost per life year saved. We assessed the impact of uncertainty on results through one-way and probabilistic sensitivity analyses. We also estimated benefit-cost ratio using a benefit transfer approach. Total intervention costs for 20 districts were INT$ 15,017,396. The intervention covered an estimated 1.6 million livebirths across 20 districts, translating to INT$ 9.4 per livebirth covered. ICERs were estimated at INT$ 1,272 per neonatal death averted or INT$ 41 per life year saved. Net benefit estimates ranged from INT$ 1,046 million to INT$ 3,254 million, and benefit-cost ratios from 71 to 218. Our study suggests that participatory women's groups scaled up by the Indian public health system were highly cost-effective in improving neonatal survival and had a very favourable return on investment. The intervention can be scaled up in similar settings within India and other countries.

Industrial areas play an important role in the urban ecosystem. Industrial site environmental quality is linked to human health. Soil samples from two different cities in India, Jamshedpur and Amravati, were collected and analyzed to assess the sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in industrial areas and their potential health risks. The total concentration of 16 PAHs in JSR (Jamshedpur) varied from 1662.90 to 10,879.20 ng/g, whereas the concentration ranged from 1456.22 to 5403.45 ng/g in the soil of AMT (Amravati). The PAHs in the samples were dominated by four-ring PAHs, followed by five-ring PAHs, and a small percentage of two-ring PAHs. The ILCR (incremental lifetime cancer risk) of the soil of Amravati was lower compared to that of Jamshedpur. The risk due to PAH exposure for children and adults was reported to be in the order of ingestion > dermal contact > inhalation while for adolescents it was dermal contact > ingestion > inhalation in Jamshedpur. In contrast, in the soil of Amravati, the PAH exposure path risk for children and adolescents were the same and showed the following order: dermal contact > ingestion > inhalation while for the adulthood age group, the order was ingestion > dermal contact > inhalation. The diagnostic ratio approach was used to assess the sources of PAHs in various environmental media. The PAH sources were mainly dominated by coal and petroleum/oil combustion. As both the study areas belong to industrial sites, the significant sources were industrial emissions, followed by traffic emissions, coal combustion for domestic livelihood, as well as due to the geographical location of the sampling sites. The results of this investigation provide novel information for contamination evaluation and human health risk assessment in PAH-contaminated sites in India.

In India, the National Education Policy 2020 recommends ensuring universal access to high-quality early childhood care and education for children aged 3-6 years by 2030. Using the 75th round of National Statistical Office data (2017-2018), this paper analyses the regional and socioeconomic inequalities in access to pre-primary education. Also, we investigate the specific role of households' economic status and educational attainment in explaining these inequalities. We find considerable regional (rural/urban) and socioeconomic inequalities in access to pre-primary education in India, with girls and children belonging to historically disadvantaged social groups (scheduled castes and scheduled tribes) less likely to attend early childhood education, particularly in rural areas. We find that a substantial portion of the rural-urban gap in access to pre-primary education can be removed by controls for households' economic condition and household head's educational status. In addition, we find gender and socioeconomic inequalities in the household investment in early years education. These findings highlight the need to put policy efforts and commitments to reducing barriers to accessing pre-primary education for children in disadvantaged conditions in India.

Timely access and continuum of care in older adults with Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementia (ADRD) is critical. This is a retrospective study on Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries with ADRD diagnosis discharged to home with home health care following an episode of acute hospitalization. Our sample included 262,525 patients. White patients in rural areas have significantly higher odds of delay (odds ratio [OR], 1.03; 95% CI, 1.01-1.06). Black patients in urban areas (OR, 1.15; 95% CI, 1.12-1.19) and Hispanic patients in urban areas also were more likely to have a delay (OR, 1.07; 95% CI, 1.03-1.11). Black and Hispanic patients residing in urban areas had a higher likelihood of delay in home healthcare initiation following hospitalization compared to Whites residing in urban areas.

The work is focused on examining the effect of the weld groove geometry on microstructure, mechanical behaviour, residual stresses and distortion of Alloy 617/P92 steel dissimilar metal weld (DMW) joints. Manual multi-pass tungsten inert gas welding with ERNiCrCoMo-1 filler was employed to fabricate the DMW for two different groove designs: Narrow V groove (NVG) and Double V groove (NVG). The microstructural examination suggested a heterogeneous microstructure evolution at the interface of the P92 steel and ERNiCrCoMo-1 weld, including the macrosegregation and element diffusion near the interface. The interface structure included the beach parallel to the fusion boundary at the P92 steel side, the peninsula connected to the fusion boundary and the island within the weld metal and partially melted zone along Alloy 617 fusion boundary. An uneven distribution of beach, peninsula and island structures along the fusion boundary of P92 steel was confirmed from optical and SEM images of interfaces. The major diffusion of the Fe from P92 steel to ERNiCrCoMo-1 weld and Cr, Co, Mo, and Ni from ERNiCrCoMo-1 weld to P92 steel were witnessed from SEM/EDS and EMPA map. The Mo-rich M6C and Cr-rich M23C6 phases were detected in inter-dendritic areas of the weld metal using the weld's SEM/EDS, XRD and EPMA study, which formed due to the rejection of Mo from the core to inter-dendritic locations during solidification. The other phases detected in the ERNiCrCoMo-1 weld were Ni3(Al, Ti), Ti(C, N), Cr7C3 and Mo2C. A variation in the microstructure of weld metal from top to root and also along the transverse direction in terms of composition and dendritic structure and also due to the composition gradient between dendrite core and inter-dendritic areas, a significant variation in hardness of weld metal was observed from both top to root and also in the transverse direction. The peak hardness was measured in CGHAZ of P92 while the minimum was in ICHAZ of P92 steel. Tensile test studies of both NVG and DVG welds joint demonstrated that failure occurred at P92 steel in both, room-temperature and high-temperature tensile tests and ensured the welded joint's applicability for advanced ultra-supercritical applications. However, the strength of the welded joint for both types of joints was measured as lower than the strength of the base metals. In Charpy impact testing of NVG and DVG welded joints, specimens failed in two parts with a small amount of plastic deformation and impact energy of 99 ± 4 J for the NVG welds joint and 91 ± 3 J for the DVG welded joint. The welded joint met the criteria for boiler applications in terms of impact energy (minimum 42 J as per European Standard EN ISO15614-1:2017 and 80 J as per fast breeder reactor application). In terms of microstructural and mechanical properties, both welded joints are acceptable. However, the DVG welded joint showed minimum distortion and residual stresses compared to the NVG welded joint.

INTRODUCTION: We examined differences in the timeliness of the initiation of home health care by race and the quality of home health agencies (HHA) among patients with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). METHODS: Medicare claims and home health assessment data were used for the study cohort: individuals aged ≥65 years with ADRD, and discharged from the hospital. Home health latency was defined as patients receiving home health care after 2 days following hospital discharge. RESULTS: Of 251,887 patients with ADRD, 57% received home health within 2 days following hospital discharge. Black patients were significantly more likely to experience home health latency (odds ratio [OR] = 1.15, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.11-1.19) compared to White patients. Home health latency was significantly higher for Black patients in low-rating HHA (OR = 1.29, 95% CI = 1.22-1.37) compared to White patients in high-rating HHA. DISCUSSION: Black patients are more likely to experience a delay in home health care initiation than White patients.

OBJECTIVE: Provision of early rehabilitation services during acute hospitalization after a hip fracture is vital for improving patient outcomes. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between the amount of rehabilitation services received during the acute care stay and hospital readmission in older patients after a hip fracture. METHODS: Medicare claims data (2016-2017) for older adults admitted to acute hospitals for a hip fracture (n = 131,127) were used. Hospital-based rehabilitation (physical therapy, occupational therapy, or both) was categorized into tertiles by minutes per day as low (median = 17.5), middle (median = 30.0), and high (median = 48.8). The study outcome was risk-adjusted 7-day and 30-day all-cause hospital readmission. RESULTS: The median hospital stay was 5 days (interquartile range [IQR] = 4-6 days). The median rehabilitation minutes per day was 30 (IQR = 21-42.5 minutes), with 17 (IQR = 12.6-20.6 minutes) in the low tertile, 30 (IQR = 12.6-20.6 minutes) in the middle tertile, and 48.8 (IQR = 42.8-60.0 minutes) in the high tertile. Compared with high therapy minutes groups, those in the low and middle tertiles had higher odds of a 30-day readmission (low tertile: odds ratio [OR] = 1.11, 95% CI = 1.06-1.17; middle tertile: OR = 1.07, 95% CI = 1.02-1.12). In addition, patients who received low rehabilitation volume had higher odds of a 7-day readmission (OR = 1.20; 95% CI = 1.10-1.30) compared with high volume. CONCLUSION: Elderly patients with hip fractures who received less rehabilitation were at higher risk of readmission within 7 and 30 days. IMPACT: These findings confirm the need to update clinical guidelines in the provision of early rehabilitation services to improve patient outcomes during acute hospital stays for individuals with hip fracture. LAY SUMMARY: There is significant individual- and hospital-level variation in the amount of hospital-based rehabilitation delivered to older adults during hip fracture hospitalization. Higher intensity of hospital-based rehabilitation care was associated with a lower risk of hospital readmission within 7 and 30 days.

Aroids are an important group of indigenous tuber crops, grown widely for their leaves, petioles, stolons, corms, and cormels. A total of 53 genotypes were evaluated for their genetic diversity in northeastern region of India. At household level, a total of 16 landraces of Aroids were recorded having different ethnobotanical uses. Based on the population study under Jhum/Shifting farming, landrace Rengama was dominant in area with 47% of the total population followed by Tamachongkham and Tasakrek. However, Pugarkusu and Chigi occupied 33.0 and 24.0% of the population, respectively under backyard farming, and were considered as major landraces. Tamachongkham, high in acridity and total oxalate content (0.82%), was used for cooking with meat, while Tasakrek was used as a baby food due to high total sugar (>3.0%), low in acridity, and total oxalate content (<0.12%). The Simpson's diversity index of the backyards was higher (0.80) as compared to Jhum field (0.63). The genotypes showed wider variability in growth and yield attributes like; plant height (89.4-206.1 cm), number of side shoots (1.84-5.92), corm weight (38.0-683.3 g), cormel weight (14.0-348.3 g), yield (0.24-1.83 kg plant-1). Similarly, wide variations were also observed for quality traits like total sugar (1.93-4.94%); starch (15.32-32.49%), total oxalate (0.10-0.82%), and dry matter (16.75-27.08%) content. Except for total oxalate, all the growth and yield attributes have shown high heritability and moderate to high genetic advance. Molecular analysis (33 polymorphic SSR markers) detected a total of 136 alleles, ranged 3 to 8 alleles per marker. The observed heterozygosity (0.24) was less than expected heterozygosity (0.69). The group-wise maximum genetic divergence was observed between Colocasia fallax (cv. Chigi) to C. esculenta var. aquatilis (cv. Tharsing); C. fallax (cv. Chigi) to C. gigantea (cv. Ganima) and C. gigantea (cv. Ganima) to Xanthosoma spp., while it was least between eddo and dasheen. The findings indicated, a wider diversity and distinct ethnobotanical uses of Aroid landraces at the house hold levels, which should be conserved and popularized to ensure nutritional security.

The present study analyzes spatio-temporal urban growth in Kathmandu Urban Agglomeration (KUA) and its impact on ecological infrastructures between 2000 and 2020. A geographically weighted regression (GWR) approach was used to investigate intra-urban drivers of urban growth between 2000-2010 (epoch 1) and 2010-2020 (epoch 2), and to predict built-up growth for the year 2030. The study makes crucial contributions to the urban growth modelling literature by (a) investigating six different neighborhood sizes (3 × 3 to 13 × 13) for computing proportion of built-up cells and (b) eliminating/selecting covariates using correlation check and global lasso regression. The superiority of GWR model over global regression model has been evaluated using the Akaike information criterion score and the stationarity test. The chronological urban growth analysis of KUA highlights rapid growth in mountainous landscape from 54.90 to 166 km2 during 2000-2020 and is projected to increase to 224.22 km2 during 2000-2030. This has significantly altered the forest-agriculture landscape during 2000-2020 (111.2 km2) and is expected to affect a large segment of ecological (blue-green) infrastructure (138 km2) by 2030. The findings of this study may be used for policy formulation, appropriate land use planning, and sustainable urban development.

The development of low-cost earth abundant metal based fluorescent sensors for a rapid and selective nanomolar level detection of Hg2+ is essential due to the increasing world-wide concern of its detrimental effect on humans as well as the environment. Herein, we present a perylene tetracarboxylic acid functionalized copper nanoclusters (CuNCs) based "turn-on" fluorescence probe for highly selective detection of toxic Hg2+ ions. The fabricated CuNCs exhibited high photostability with emission maximum centered at 532 nm (λex = 480 nm). The fluorescence intensity of CuNCs was remarkably enhanced upon the addition of Hg2+ over other competing ions and neutral analytes. Notably, the 'turn-on' fluorescence response exhibits highly sensitive detection limit as low as 15.9 nM (S/N âˆ¼ 3). The time resolved fluorescence spectroscopy suggested the energy transfer between CuNCs and Hg2+ ions following either inhibited fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) or surface modification of CuNCs during Hg2+ sensing. This study offers the systematic design and development of new fluorescent 'turn-on' nanoprobes for rapid and selective recognition of heavy metal ions.
