RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking behavior is highly determined by social influences during childhood and adolescence. This phenomenon has not been fully evaluated in the Hispanic/Latino population. PURPOSE: To examine the association between exposure to household cigarette smoking behavior (HCSB) and adult cigarette smoking among a diverse Hispanic/Latino population living in four US urban centers. The effect of acculturation on cigarette smoking was also evaluated. METHODS: Data from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL) (n=13,231, ages 18-74years, collected between March 2008 and June 2011) were analyzed using logistic regression. RESULTS: HCSB exposure was an independent risk factor for adult current cigarette smoking in Hispanic/Latinos (OR 1.7; 95% CI 1.4, 2.1) after controlling for relevant confounders including socio-demographic and cultural factors. Cubans and Puerto Ricans had the highest prevalence of HCSB exposure (59% and 47% respectively) and highest prevalence of current cigarette smoking (26% and 32%) compared with other Hispanic/Latino groups, (p<.01). CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest that exposure to HCSB in Hispanics/Latinos living in the US is an independent predictor of adult cigarette smoking, and this association appears to be strongest in Cubans and Puerto Ricans.

RESUMO

In 2010, the sewage sludge production rate will be 178,500 t dried solids (ds) for Beijing and 294,000 t-ds for Shanghai, respectively. Beijing adopts a centralized system to stabilize 78% of her sludge in three rural Stabilization Centres. Aerated composting technique will be used. Shanghai on the contrary decentralizes the management plan to treat the sludge on site. Diverse treatment trains, such as aerobic/anaerobic digestion, drying, incineration, and composting will be applied. Production rate, treatment plan, and the associated costs, energy consumption, carbon dioxide emission, and risk assessment for heavy metals and pathogens on human health were evaluated in this report for sludges yielded in Beijing and Shanghai, China.

RESUMO

This note revisits the literature evaluating the thermodynamic parameters of adsorption equilibrium uptakes of heavy metals and dyes from water and wastewater streams using low-cost adsorbents derived from agricultural waste, industrial wastes, inorganic particulates, or some natural products. We highlighted the possible flaws in some adsorption studies when their thermodynamic parameters were assessed, since compensation effects during enthalpy and entropy evaluation were possibly overlooked.

RESUMO

The electrostatic interaction potential between DNA duplexes in solution is a basis for the statistical mechanics of columnar DNA assemblies. It may also play an important role in recombination of homologous genes. We develop a theory of this interaction that includes thermal torsional fluctuations of DNA using field-theoretical methods and Monte Carlo simulations. The theory extends and rationalizes the earlier suggested variational approach which was developed in the context of a ground state theory of interaction of nonhomologous duplexes. It shows that the heuristic variational theory is equivalent to the Hartree self-consistent field approximation. By comparison of the Hartree approximation with an exact solution based on the QM analogy of path integrals, as well as Monte Carlo simulations, we show that this easily analytically-tractable approximation works very well in most cases. Thermal fluctuations do not remove the ability of DNA molecules to attract each other at favorable azimuthal conformations, neither do they wash out the possibility of electrostatic "snap-shot" recognition of homologous sequences, considered earlier on the basis of ground state calculations. At short distances DNA molecules undergo a "torsional alignment transition," which is first order for nonhomologous DNA and weaker order for homologous sequences.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with participation and willingness to participate in anti-tobacco community activities in 4-7th grade students. A probability sample was drawn from seven regions in Florida (n = 1219). Telephone interviews assessed socioeconomic status, tobacco use, knowledge, and attitudes, and exposure to anti-tobacco school education and media campaigns. Factors related to both participation and willingness included: parental discussion of tobacco use, exposure to school courses with anti-tobacco curricula and a belief that youth could convince their friends to stop smoking. Additional participation correlates included: parental smoking status and student government activity participation. Additional willingness correlates included: exposure to anti-tobacco television campaigns, liking school, and several tobacco-related knowledge and attitudinal questions. These findings suggest that exposure to community-based tobacco control programs and family discussion of tobacco use is associated with regular participation and/or willingness of youth to participate in anti-tobacco activities.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the clinical utility of mitral annulus velocity in the evaluation of left ventricular diastolic function. BACKGROUND: Mitral inflow velocity recorded by Doppler echocardiography has been widely used to evaluate left ventricular diastolic function but is affected by other factors. The mitral annulus velocity profile during diastole may provide additional information about left ventricular diastolic function. METHODS: Mitral annulus velocity during diastole was measured by Doppler tissue imaging (DTI) 1) in 59 normal volunteers (group 1); 2) in 20 patients with a relaxation abnormality as assessed by Doppler mitral inflow variables (group 2) at baseline and after saline loading; 3) in 11 patients (group 3) with normal diastolic function before and after intravenous nitroglycerin infusion; and 4) in 38 consecutive patients (group 4) undergoing cardiac catheterization in whom mitral inflow velocity and tau as well as mitral annulus velocity were measured simultaneously. RESULTS: In group 1, mean +/- SD peak early and late diastolic mitral annulus velocity was 10.0 +/- 1.3 and 9.5 +/- 1.5 cm/s, respectively. In group 2, mitral inflow velocity profile changed toward the pseudonormalization pattern with saline loading (deceleration time 311 +/- 84 ms before to 216 +/- 40 ms after intervention, p < 0.001), whereas peak early diastolic mitral annulus velocity did not change significantly (5.3 +/- 1.2 cm/s to 5.7 +/- 1.4 cm/s, p = NS). In group 3, despite a significant change in mitral inflow velocity profile after nitroglycerin, peak early diastolic mitral annulus velocity did not change significantly (9.5 +/- 2.2 cm/s to 9.2 +/- 1.7 cm/s, p = NS). In group 4, peak early diastolic mitral annulus velocity (r = -0.56, p < 0.01) and the early/late ratio (r = -0.46, p < 0.01) correlated with tau. When the combination of normal mitral inflow variables with prolonged tau (> or = 50 ms) was classified as pseudonormalization, peak early diastolic mitral annulus velocity < 8.5 cm/s and the early/late ratio < 1 could identify the pseudonormalization with a sensitivity of 88% and specificity of 67%. CONCLUSIONS: Mitral annulus velocity determined by DTI is a relatively preload-independent variable in evaluating diastolic function.

RESUMO

Sociodemographic and educational correlates of hearing loss were examined in Cuban-American, Mexican-American and Puerto Rican children 6-19 years of age. Logistic regression analyses indicated a greater risk of bilateral hearing loss among children living in crowded housing conditions or without health insurance, as well as among those who were below expected school grade level and whose parents reported low educational attainment levels. However, the strengths of these associations were small to moderate in magnitude and were not always consistent across the ethnic subgroups. These findings provide some evidence that hearing-impaired Hispanic children are more likely to reside in economically disadvantaged families and to be below their expected school grade level.

RESUMO

We examined sociodemographic correlates of hearing loss and hearing aid use in adult Hispanics using data from the Hispanic Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. After adjustment for age and gender, odds ratios (ORs) of hearing impairment for non-married vs married participants were 1.6 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.0-2.5] for Mexican-Americans and 2.2 (95% CI = 1.2-4.2) for Puerto Ricans. ORs ranged from 1.6 to 3.2 for unemployed vs employed, and from 1.7 to 2.1 for uninsured vs insured Hispanics. For Mexican-Americans, the OR of hearing aid use for those living below vs above the poverty line was 9.1 (95% CI = 1.1-100.0). These results are consistent with those reported for other ethnic groups.

RESUMO

Physicians' global assessments traditionally have been considered to be relatively objective estimates of older people's health against which self-ratings of health and other self-reported measures are compared. Using data on middle-aged and older Mexican Americans from the Hispanic Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, it is suggested that the subjective component of physicians' assessments can create problems with validity, especially when a small number of physicians perform the assessments, as was the case in this study. It is recommended that researchers should not always assume that physicians' assessments represent an objective "gold standard" for validating self-reported measures of health.

RESUMO

In 31 normal subjects (17 male), aged 19-48 years, and 8 patients with chronic low back pain (4 male), aged 37-55 years, the repeatability of surface recordings of acoustic myography (AMG) and electromyography (EMG) were examined in the lumbar paraspinal muscles. Five isometric test positions were examined. In 21 of the normal subjects, four positions tested were: quiet standing, half extension from prone lying, full extension from prone with and without resistance. In 10 of the normal subjects and the 8 back pain patients, a standardised, unsupported horizontal position with the upper body over the end of a couch was tested. The AMG and EMG signals were full-wave rectified and integrated (iAMG and iEMG). The variability of recordings during repeated 5-s isometric contractions was assessed by analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the coefficient of variation (CV) was calculated from the ANOVA. Both recording techniques produced the most repeatable results during the unsupported, horizontal hold position. In the normal subjects, CV were, iAMG 5.6%, iEMG 4.9%; and in the patients, iAMG 4.4%, iEMG 2.6%. The CV for the other four isometric test positions ranged from 15.3% to 29.4% for iAMG, and 8% to 15.7% for iEMG. These results demonstrated that a controlled test manoeuvre for examining AMG and EMG of the paraspinal muscles was vital for repeatable recordings. The CV for the standardised, horizontal position were lower than for previously published results.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smokers often engage in other, potentially deleterious, health behaviors. Such behaviors have not been well documented in Mexican American smokers. METHODS: Data from the Southwestern sample of the Hispanic Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (HHANES) were employed to investigate differences in health behaviors, risk factors and health indicators between cigarette smokers and nonsmokers among Mexican Americans. Differences between those smoking less than 10 and 10 or more cigarettes per day were also examined by age group and gender. RESULTS: Positive associations between smoking status and heavy coffee and alcohol consumption were found across gender and age groups. Less consistent was the finding that smokers weighed less than nonsmokers. Lower systolic and diastolic blood pressures in middle-aged smokers, and higher levels of depressive symptomatology among smoking women were found. Those smoking 10 or more cigarettes per day were more likely to report heavy coffee consumption, with younger men reporting greater activity limitation due to poor health. Middle-aged men and women in the 10+ category were generally in better health than lighter smokers. CONCLUSIONS: Modest associations between cigarette smoking, health behaviors and risk factors found in other studies were confirmed in this Mexican American population. Few significant associations between smoking and health status were noted.

RESUMO

The influence of level of activity examined with data from an eight-year (1976 to 1984) longitudinal study of 508 older Mexican Americans and Anglos. Over the study interval, 119 subjects were confirmed to have died. Activity was a significant predictor of mortality at the univariate level. However, when age, gender, education, marital status, ethnicity, and self-rated health were controlled for in the analysis, activity was not a significant predictor of mortality. The popular notion that an active life among elderly persons might lead to extended longevity was not supported by these data.
