RESUMO

In this study, breast phantoms were fabricated by emulating glandular and adipose tissues separately using a three-dimensional (3D) printer. In addition, direct and quantitative glandular dose evaluations were performed. A quantitative method was developed to evaluate the glandular and adipose tissues separately when performing glandular dose evaluations. The variables used for glandular dose evaluation were breast thickness, glandular tissue ratio, and additional filter materials. The values obtained using a Monte Carlo simulation and those measured using a glass dosimeter were compared and analyzed. The analysis showed that as the glandular tissue ratio increased, the dose decreased by approximately 10%, which is not a significant variation. The comparison revealed that the simulated values of the glandular dose were approximately 15% higher than the measured values. The use of silver and rhodium filters resulted in a mean simulated dose of 1.00 mGy and 0.72 mGy, respectively, while the corresponding mean measured values were 0.89 mGy ± 0.03 mGy and 0.62 mGy ± 0.02 mGy. The mean glandular dose can be reliably evaluated by comparing the simulated and measured values.

In this study, we evaluated the effect of radiation dose on gonads during paediatric kidney nuclear medicine tests. Using Monte Carlo simulations, the distribution and effects of radiation were physically evaluated by displaying the distribution path of the source in the human body over time. In particular, the evaluation of doses in children, who are sensitive to radiation during nuclear medicine tests that use internal exposure among several types of medical exposures, was conducted to obtain data for the management of medical exposures. Our results indicated that under normal kidney function, the dose received by the target kidney was 0.430 mGy/mCi, which is ~6% higher than the dose suggested by the International Commission on Radiation Protection (ICRP). Furthermore, when kidney function was compromised, the dose estimated was 0.726 mGy/mCi, which is ~2% lower than the dose suggested by the ICRP. In the male and female gonads, namely the testicles and ovaries, the doses received were 0.359 mGy/mCi and 0.394 mGy/mCi, respectively, under normal kidney function. Similarly, under abnormal kidney function, the doses ranged from 0.187 to 0.353 mGy/mCi and 0.238 to 0.388 mGy/mCi in the male and female gonads, respectively.

PURPOSE: To demonstrate the feasibility of foot blood flow measurement by using dynamic volume perfusion computed tomographic (CT) technique with the upslope method in an animal experiment and a human study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The human study was approved by the institutional review board, and written informed consent was obtained from all patients. The animal study was approved by the research animal care and use committee. A perfusion CT experiment was first performed by using rabbits. A color-coded perfusion map was reconstructed by using in-house perfusion analysis software based on the upslope method, and the measured blood flow on the map was compared with the reference standard microsphere method by using correlation analysis. A total of 17 perfusion CT sessions were then performed (a) once in five human patients and (b) twice (before and after endovascular revascularization) in six human patients. Perfusion maps of blood flow were reconstructed and analyzed. The Wilcoxon signed rank test was used to prove significant differences in blood flow before and after treatment. RESULTS: The animal experiment demonstrated a strong correlation (R(2) = 0.965) in blood flow between perfusion CT and the microsphere method. Perfusion maps were obtained successfully in 16 human clinical sessions (94%) with the use of 32 mL of contrast medium and an effective radiation dose of 0.31 mSv (k factor for the ankle, 0.0002). The plantar dermis showed the highest blood flow among all anatomic structures of the foot, including muscle, subcutaneous tissue, tendon, and bone. After a successful revascularization procedure, the blood flow of the plantar dermis increased by 153% (P = .031). The interpretations of the color-coded perfusion map correlated well with the clinical and angiographic findings. CONCLUSION: Perfusion CT could be used to measure foot blood flow in both animals and humans. It can be a useful modality for the diagnosis of peripheral arterial disease by providing quantitative information on foot perfusion status.

We compare electric and diesel urban delivery trucks in terms of life-cycle energy consumption, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and total cost of ownership (TCO). The relative benefits of electric trucks depend heavily on vehicle efficiency associated with drive cycle, diesel fuel price, travel demand, electric drive battery replacement and price, electricity generation and transmission efficiency, electric truck recharging infrastructure, and purchase price. For a drive cycle with frequent stops and low average speed such as the New York City Cycle (NYCC), electric trucks emit 42-61% less GHGs and consume 32-54% less energy than diesel trucks, depending upon vehicle efficiency cases. Over an array of possible conditions, the median TCO of electric trucks is 22% less than that of diesel trucks on the NYCC. For a drive cycle with less frequent stops and high average speed such as the City-Suburban Heavy Vehicle Cycle (CSHVC), electric trucks emit 19-43% less GHGs and consume 5-34% less energy, but cost 1% more than diesel counterparts. Considering current and projected U.S. regional electricity generation mixes, for the baseline case, the energy use and GHG emissions ratios of electric to diesel trucks range from 48 to 82% and 25 to 89%, respectively.
