RESUMO

PURPOSE: To describe the clinical and sonographic features of ovarian benign Brenner tumor (BBT) and malignant Brenner tumor (MBT), and to compare performance of four diagnostic models in differentiating them. METHODS: Fifteen patients with BBTs and nine patients with MBTs were retrospectively identified in our institution from January 2003 and December 2021. One ultrasound examiner categorized each mass according to ovarian-adnexal reporting and data system (O-RADS), international ovarian tumor analysis (IOTA) Simple Rules Risk (SR-Risk) assessment and assessment of different neoplasias in the adnexa (ADNEX) models with/without CA125. Receiver operating characteristic curves were generated to compare diagnostic performance. RESULTS: Patients with MBT had higher CA125 serum level (62.5% vs. 6.7%, P = 0.009) and larger maximum diameter of lesion (89 mm vs. 43 mm, P = 0.009) than did those with BBT. BBT tended to have higher prevalence of calcifications (100% vs. 55.6%, P = 0.012) and acoustic shadowing (93.3% vs. 33.3%, P = 0.004), and lower color scores manifesting none or minimal flow (100.0% vs. 22.2%, P < 0.001). Areas under curves of O-RADS, IOTA SR-Risk and ADNEX models with/without CA125 were 0.896, 0.913, 0.892 and 0.896, respectively. There were no significant differences between them. CONCLUSION: BBTs are often small solid tumors with sparse color Doppler signals, which contain calcifications with posterior acoustic shadowing. The most common pattern of MBT is a large multilocular-solid or solid mass with irregular tumor borders, and most were moderately or richly vascularized at color Doppler. These four models have excellent performance in distinguishing them.

Invasiveness is a major predictor of surgical outcome and long-term prognosis in patients with pituitary adenomas (PAs). We assessed PA invasiveness via radiological, surgical and histological perspectives to establish a classification scheme for predicting invasive behavior and poor prognosis. We retrospectively analyzed 903 patients who underwent transnasal-transsphenoidal surgery between January 2013 and December 2019. Radiological (hazard ratio (HR) 5.11, 95% confidence interval (CI): 3.98−6.57, p < 0.001) and surgical (HR 6.40, 95% CI: 5.09−8.06, p < 0.001) invasiveness better predicted gross-total resection (GTR) and recurrence/progression-free survival (RPFS) rates than did histological invasiveness (HR 1.44, 95% CI: 1.14−1.81, p = 0.003). Knosp grades 2 (HR 4.63, 95% CI: 2.13−10.06, p < 0.001) and 3 (HR 2.23, 95% CI: 1.39−3.59, p = 0.011) with surgical invasiveness were better predictors of prognosis than corresponding Knosp grades without surgical invasiveness. Classifications 1 and 2 were established based on radiological, surgical and histological invasiveness, and Knosp classification and surgical invasiveness, respectively. Classification 2 predicted RPFS better than Knosp classification and Classification 1. Overall, radiological and surgical invasiveness were clinically valuable as prognostic predictors. The convenience and good accuracy of Invasiveness in Classification 2 is useful for identifying invasive PAs and facilitating the development of treatment plans.

Since the mainstream of the Yangtze River lower reach is an important drinking water source for residents alongside it, it is essential to investigate the concentration, distribution characteristics and health risks of heavy metals in the water. In this study, a total of 110 water samples were collected on both the left and right banks from the upstream to the downstream. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to determine the sources of heavy metals. Their non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks were studied with health risk assessment models, and uncertainties were determined through Monte Carlo simulation. Results showed that concentrations of all heavy metals were significantly lower than the relevant authoritative standards in the studied area. From the upstream to the downstream, Ni, Cu and Cr had similar concentration distribution rules and mainly originated from human industrial activities. Pb, Cd and Zn had a fluctuating but increasing trend, which was mainly due to the primary geochemistry, traffic pollution and agricultural activities. The maximum As concentration appeared in the upstream mainly because of the carbonatite weathering or mine tail water discharge. Concentrations of Zn, As, Cd and Pb on the left bank were higher than those on the right bank, while concentrations of Cu, Ni and Cr on the right bank were higher than those on the left bank. The non-carcinogenic risk index (HI) was less than 1 (except of L11), and HI on the left bank was higher than that on the right bank. The carcinogenic risk (CR) was generally larger than 1.0 × 10-4, CR on the right bank overall was higher than that on the left bank, and the health risk of kids was greater than that of adults. Furthermore, Monte Carlo simulation results and the actual calculated values were basically the same.

AIM: To explore the effectiveness of cavum septi pellucidi (CSP) width to anteroposterior cerebellar diameter (APCD) ratio as a diagnostic adjunct for prenatal diagnosis of trisomy 18. METHODS: Images of normal fetal brain within 15 and 35 weeks were stored in our center from 2016 to 2017. Images of aneuploid fetuses were retrospectively collected from 2004 to 2017. The transverse cerebellar diameter, APCD and CSP width were measured. CSP/APCD and APCD/transverse cerebellar diameter ratios were calculated and compared between euploid and aneuploid fetuses. RESULTS: One thousand and forty one fetuses were analyzed, including 817 euploid fetuses and 224 aneuploid fetuses (trisomy 21 117 cases, trisomy 18 82 cases, trisomy 13 9 cases, sex-linked 16 cases). No correlation had been found between both ratios and gestational weeks (P > 0.05). In aneuploid groups, means of ratios were both significantly different just between trisomy 18 group and euploid group (P < 0.05). The best area under the curve was shown by the CSP/APCD ratio. The cutoff value of CSP/APCD was 0.46 (sensitivity 87.0%, specificity 85.0%). CONCLUSION: A wide CSP or cerebellar hypoplasia warrants a more detailed ultrasound screening and genetic counseling. A larger CSP/APCD ratio alerts us to trisomy 18 syndrome, especially in cases with subtle anomalies.

High-purity semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (s-SWNTs) with little contamination are desired for high-performance electronic devices. Although conjugated polymer wrapping has been demonstrated as a powerful and scalable strategy for enriching s-SWNTs, this approach suffers from significant contaminations by polymer residues and high cost of conjugated polymers. Here, we present a simple but general approach using removable and recoverable conjugated polymers for separating s-SWNTs with little polymer contamination. A conjugated polymer with imine linkages was synthesized to demonstrate this concept. Moreover, the SWNTs used are without prepurifications and very low cost. The polymer exhibits strong dispersion for large-diameter s-SWNTs with high yield (23.7%) and high selectivity (99.7%). After s-SWNT separation, the polymer can be depolymerized into monomers and be cleanly removed under mild acidic conditions, yielding polymer-free s-SWNTs. The monomers can be almost quantitatively recovered to resynthesize polymer. This approach enables isolation of "clean" s-SWNTs and, at the same time, greatly lowers costs for SWNT separation.

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are devices that exploit microorganisms as biocatalysts to degrade organic matter or sludge present in wastewater (WW), and thereby generate electricity. We developed a simple, low-cost single-chamber microbial fuel cell (SCMFC)-type biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) sensor using carbon felt (anode) and activated sludge, and demonstrated its feasibility in the construction of a real-time BOD measurement system. Further, the effects of anodic pH and organic concentration on SCMFC performance were examined, and the correlation between BOD concentration and its response time was analyzed. Our results demonstrated that the SCMFC exhibited a stable voltage after 132 min following the addition of synthetic WW (BOD concentration: 200 mg/L). Notably, the response signal increased with an increase in BOD concentration (range: 5-200 mg/L) and was found to be directly proportional to the substrate concentration. However, at higher BOD concentrations (>120 mg/L) the response signal remained unaltered. Furthermore, we optimized the SCMFC using synthetic WW, and tested it with real WW. Upon feeding real WW, the BOD values exhibited a standard deviation from 2.08 to 8.3% when compared to the standard BOD5 method, thus demonstrating the practical applicability of the developed system to real treatment effluents.

OBJECTIVE: To validate the Oxford Knee Score (OKS) in outpatients with knee osteoarthritis (OA). METHODS: Eligible patients were interviewed using a pretested questionnaire containing the OKS, the Short Form (SF)-6D, and the EuroQol Group 5-Dimension Self-Report Questionnaire score (EQ-5D). Reliability was assessed using Cronbach's alpha, dimensionality using principal component factor analysis and item-total correlations, convergent and discriminant construct validity using expected correlations between the OKS and the SF-6D and the EQ-5D. RESULTS: The OKS were well accepted by patients in a pilot testing. When administered to a convenient sample of 187 patients with knee OA (mean age 64 years, 74% female, mean duration of OA 7.6 years), Cronbach's alpha exceeded 0.8 and factor analysis yielded two factors with eigenvalues > 1. Hypothesized item-total correlations (ρ ≥ 0.4) were observed for all items. Convergent construct validity was supported by the presence of hypothesized moderate to strong correlations between the OKS and SF-6D physical functioning, role limitation, social functioning and pain, EQ-5D mobility, self-care, usual activities, and pain/discomfort, and mobility visual analogue scale (ρ = 0.47-0.82). Discriminant construct validity was not satisfactory. The OKS correlated weakly with SF-6D vitality (ρ = 0.35), but strongly with SF-6D mental health and EQ-5D anxiety/depression (ρ = 0.51 and 0.41, respectively). CONCLUSION: The OKS has demonstrated good psychometric properties and thus can be considered a reliable and valid measurement for outpatients with OA.
