China's long-term sustainability faces socioeconomic and environmental uncertainties. We identify five key systemic risk drivers, called disruptors, which could push China into a polycrisis: pandemic disease, ageing and shrinking population, deglobalization, climate change, and biodiversity loss. Using an integrated simulation model, we quantify the effects of these disruptors on the country's long-term sustainability framed by 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Here we show that ageing and shrinking population, and climate change would be the two most influential disruptors on China's long-term sustainability. The compound effects of all disruptors could result in up to 2.1 and 7.0 points decline in the China's SDG score by 2030 and 2050, compared to the baseline with no disruptors and no additional sustainability policies. However, an integrated policy portfolio involving investment in education, healthcare, energy transition, water-use efficiency, ecological conservation and restoration could promote resilience against the compound effects and significantly improve China's long-term sustainability.

Transformers have shown remarkable performance, however, their architecture design is a time-consuming process that demands expertise and trial-and-error. Thus, it is worthwhile to investigate efficient methods for automatically searching high-performance Transformers via Transformer Architecture Search (TAS). In order to improve the search efficiency, training-free proxy based methods have been widely adopted in Neural Architecture Search (NAS). Whereas, these proxies have been found to be inadequate in generalizing well to Transformer search spaces, as confirmed by several studies and our own experiments. This paper presents an effective scheme for TAS called TRansformer Architecture search with ZerO-cost pRoxy guided evolution (T-Razor) that achieves exceptional efficiency. First, through theoretical analysis, we discover that the synaptic diversity of multi-head self-attention (MSA) and the saliency of multi-layer perceptron (MLP) are correlated with the performance of corresponding Transformers. The properties of synaptic diversity and synaptic saliency motivate us to introduce the ranks of synaptic diversity and saliency that denoted as DSS++ for evaluating and ranking Transformers. DSS++ incorporates correlation information among sampled Transformers to provide unified scores for both synaptic diversity and synaptic saliency. We then propose a block-wise evolution search guided by DSS++ to find optimal Transformers. DSS++ determines the positions for mutation and crossover, enhancing the exploration ability. Experimental results demonstrate that our T-Razor performs competitively against the state-of-the-art manually or automatically designed Transformer architectures across four popular Transformer search spaces. Significantly, T-Razor improves the searching efficiency across different Transformer search spaces, e.g., reducing required GPU days from more than 24 to less than 0.4 and outperforming existing zero-cost approaches. We also apply T-Razor to the BERT search space and find that the searched Transformers achieve competitive GLUE results on several Neural Language Processing (NLP) datasets. This work provides insights into training-free TAS, revealing the usefulness of evaluating Transformers based on the properties of their different blocks.

China has a large fastest-aging population, which would reshape household consumption patterns and influence global CO2 emissions. This study examines global CO2 emissions driven by household consumption (i.e., household carbon footprints, HCFs) of 34 age groups in China's 30 provinces and uncovers relevant socioeconomic influencing factors. Results show that China's population aging (i.e., the proportion of the elderly population) is conducive to global CO2 emission reduction during 2011-2014. This trend is mainly due to the relatively lower per capita HCFs of the elderly (1.7 t in 2014). In contrast, the per capita HCFs of the youth group are higher (3.3 t in 2014), mainly affected by the large expenditure on residence and transportation & communication. In addition, the HCFs of all age groups have increased during 2011-2014. Per capita expenditure is the most significant driver of this increase. The decline in CO2 emission intensity makes the largest contribution to reducing the HCFs of the youth group. For the aged group, expenditure structure change is the largest contributor to HCFs reduction. These findings reveal the differentiated impacts of China's household consumption by age on global CO2 emissions. This study lays the scientific foundation for deriving amelioration policies and achieving emission reduction targets in the process of population aging.

Field rapid determination of soil accessible Cr(â ¥) is of great significance for on-site assessment and decision-making about the health risks of contaminated sites. When the thickness of solutions with various concentrations of Cr(â ¥) is constant, there would be a quantitative relationship between the chromogenic difference of Cr(â ¥) solutions and the concentration of Cr(â ¥). The chromogenic difference could be described by Red (R), Green (G), Blue (B) values. Based on the chromogenic reaction between 1,5-diphenylcarbazide and Cr(â ¥), this study first established the calibration curve between the chromogenic difference and the concentration of Cr(â ¥) in standard solution with or without 0.01â¯M CaCl2, using an RGB color sensor. This is the subsequent determination basis of the method for rapidly assessing accessible Cr(â ¥) in the field (M-RGB). Then, the concentration of accessible Cr(â ¥) of contaminated soil with "hand-shaking + standing" field extraction method was compared with "end-over-end shaking" laboratory extraction method. Finally, the accessible Cr(â ¥) of contaminated soil extractants was determined via M-RGB integrating the field extraction method. Results indicated there was a highly significant linear relationship between colorimetric difference value (∆E) and Cr(â ¥) concentration in the range of 0.1-3â¯mg/L (R2 > 0.99, P < 0.01), based on the Euclidean formula for calculating ∆E. The "hand-shaking + standing" field extraction method was effective in obtaining accessible Cr(â ¥) extractants with or without 0.01â¯M CaCl2, with the high extraction efficiency within 100±1%. The concentrations of accessible Cr(â ¥) in various polluted soils determined by M-RGB were consistent with that determined by the ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry, with the relative error within ±5%, and the relative standard deviation ≤ 20%. The spiked recovery experiments showed that the recovery of M-RGB was between 95% and 105%, which means M-RGB could realize the trace analysis for accessible Cr(â ¥) in the field.

Transient elastography (TE), recommended by the WHO, is an established method for characterizing liver fibrosis via liver stiffness measurement (LSM). However, technical barriers remain towards point-of-care application, as conventional TE requires wired connections, possesses a bulky size, and lacks adequate imaging guidance for precise liver localization. In this work, we report the design, phantom validation, and clinical evaluation of a palm-sized TE system that enables simultaneous B-mode imaging and LSM. The performance of this system was validated experimentally using tissue-equivalent reference phantoms (1.45-75 kPa). Comparative studies against other liver elastography techniques, including conventional TE and two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE), were performed to evaluate its reliability and validity in adults with various chronic liver diseases. Intra- and inter-operator reliability of LSM were established by an elastography expert and a novice. A good agreement was observed between the Young's modulus reported by the phantom manufacturer and this system (bias: 1.1-8.6%). Among 121 patients, liver stiffness measured by this system and conventional TE were highly correlated (r = 0.975) and strongly agreed with each other (mean difference: -0.77 kPa). Inter-correlation of this system with conventional TE and 2D-SWE was observed. Excellent-to-good operator reliability was demonstrated in 60 patients (ICCs: 0.824-0.913). We demonstrated the feasibility of employing a fully integrated phased array probe for reliable and valid LSM, guided by real-time B-mode imaging of liver anatomy. This system represents the first technical advancement toward point-of-care liver fibrosis assessment. Its small footprint, along with B-mode guidance capability, improves examination efficiency and scales up screening for liver fibrosis.

Key to regional sustainable development are the development and interplay of population dynamics and social welfare, each playing a significant role. As a representative region with demographic characteristics such as negative population growth and large labor outflow, the development and interaction between population and social welfare in Nanchong deserve in-depth exploration. This article takes the development of population and social welfare in Nanchong as the research object, and constructs an evaluation indicator system of population and social welfare through research backtracking, and uses entropy method and coupling coordination model to measure the development level and interactive effect of population and social welfare in Nanchong from 2010 to 2021. The research results show that: Firstly, the comprehensive evaluation results of population in Nanchong shows a linear upward trend, which indicates the stable positive effect of population structure and distribution, the gradual improvement effect of population quality effectively compensate for the weakening effect of population quantity, thus achieving the positive development of population. Secondly, the comprehensive evaluation results of social welfare in Nanchong shows an exponential upward trend, which indicates the social welfare has maintained a rapid growth momentum in various dimensions and the long-term positive effects have completely absorbed the negative effects, thus achieving the positive development of social welfare. Thirdly, during the sample period, the population and social welfare in Nanchong consistently maintained a high level of interaction strength, with factors diffusing and integrating. On this basis, the diffusion theory is used as an empirical reference to construct three interactive mechanisms between the population and social welfare in Nanchong and the implications are inferred from the empirical results.

Field rapid determination of soil accessible Cu(â ¡) was important for environmental safety and human health risk assessment. In this study, an inexpensive red, green, and blue (RGB) color sensor was used for quantitative color difference analysis of the colored solution for soil accessible Cu(â ¡) with bis-cyclohexanone oxalydihydrazone as color reagent to develop a new method for analyzing soil accessible under field conditions. First, the calibration curve for RGB color sensor method was established in the standard solutions of Cu(II). Then the "hand shaking + standing" field extraction method for accessible Cu(â ¡) was developed. Finally, the method was applied in contaminated soils in the laboratory and in the field, and set the values determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) as the standard ones. Results indicated that in the range of 0.1-5 mg L-1 Cu(II), the RGB Euclidean chromogenic difference values were directly linear correlated with the concentration of Cu(II) (R2 > 0.999). The interference of Fe(â ¢) and Mn(â ¡) could be eliminated by adding citric acid. The "hand shaking + standing" field extraction method could effectively extract the accessible Cu(â ¡) from soil with the high extraction rates. The concentrations of accessible Cu(II) in various polluted soils determined by RGB color sensor method were consistent with that determined by AAS, with the relative error within ±5%, the relative standard deviation ≤ 20%. The recovery of Cu(II) in RGB color sensor method was between 97% and 105%, which could meet the requirements of trace analysis of accessible Cu(â ¡) in the field. The high accuracy and precision of RGB color sensor method was reconfirmed in the rapid field quantitative assessment of soil accessible Cu(â ¡). Due to that the RGB color sensor was low cost, rechargeable, portable, mobile, ambient light resistant, the method would have a great potential for the determination of accessible Cu(â ¡) in contaminated soils.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is a measurement of the fluctuation of time between each heartbeat and reflects the function of the autonomic nervous system. HRV is an important indicator for both physical and mental status and for broad-scope diseases. In this review, we discuss how wearable devices can be used to monitor HRV, and we compare the HRV monitoring function among different devices. In addition, we have reviewed the recent progress in HRV tracking with wearable devices and its value in health monitoring and disease diagnosis. Although many challenges remain, we believe HRV tracking with wearable devices is a promising tool that can be used to improve personal health.

Falls are a prevalent cause of injury among older people. While some wearable inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensor-based systems have been widely investigated for fall risk assessment, their reliability, validity, and identification ability in community-dwelling older people remain unclear. Therefore, this study evaluated the performance of a commercially available IMU sensor-based fall risk assessment system among 20 community-dwelling older recurrent fallers (with a history of ≥2 falls in the past 12 months) and 20 community-dwelling older non-fallers (no history of falls in the past 12 months), together with applying the clinical scale of the Mini-Balance Evaluation Systems Test (Mini-BESTest). The results show that the IMU sensor-based system exhibited a significant moderate to excellent test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.838, p < 0.001), an acceptable level of internal consistency reliability (Spearman's rho = 0.471, p = 0.002), an acceptable convergent validity (Cronbach's α = 0.712), and an area under the curve (AUC) value of 0.590 for the IMU sensor-based receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve. The findings suggest that while the evaluated IMU sensor-based system exhibited good reliability and acceptable validity, it might not be able to fully identify the recurrent fallers and non-fallers in a community-dwelling older population. Further system optimization is still needed.

BACKGROUND: There is currently no objective and accurate clinical assessment of reticular neuromuscular control in healthy subjects or patients with upper motor neuron injury. As a result, clinical dysfunctions of neuromuscular control could just be semi-quantified, efficacies and mechanisms of various therapies for neuromuscular control improving are difficult to verify. METHODS: Fourteen healthy participants were required to maintain standing balance in the kinetostatics model of Gusu Constraint Standing Training (GCST). A backward and upward constraint force was applied to their trunk at 0°, 20° and 25°, respectively. The multiplex recurrence network (MRN) was applied to analyze the surface electromyography signals of 16 muscles of bilateral lower limbs during the tests. Different levels of MRN network indices were utilized to assess reticular neuromuscular control. RESULTS: Compared with the 0° test, the MRN indices related to muscle coordination of bilateral lower limbs, of unilateral lower limb and of inter limbs showed significant increase when participants stood in 20° and 25° tests (P < 0.05). The indices related to muscle contribution of gluteal, anterior thigh and calf muscles significantly increased when participants stood in 20° and 25° tests (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: This study applied the dynamical network indices of MRN to analyze the changes of neuromuscular control of lower limbs of healthy participants in the kinetostatics model of GCST. Results showed that the overall coordination of lower limb muscles would be significantly enhanced during performing GCST, partly by the enhancement of neuromuscular control of single lower limb, and partly by the enhancement of joint control across lower limbs. In particular, the muscles in buttocks, anterior thighs and calves played a more important role in the overall coordination, and their involvement was significantly increased. The MRN could provide details of control at the bilateral lower limbs, unilateral lower limb, inter limbs, and single muscle levels, and has the potential to be a new tool for assessing the reticular neuromuscular control. Emamectin benzoate (EB), chlorantraniliprole (CTP), chlorfenapyr (CFP), and lufenuron (LFR) are widely used to control Spodoptera exigua on cabbage. This study is aimed at establishing a universal, sensitive, accurate, and efficient method for the determination of these pesticide residues in cabbage using QuEChERS pretreatment combined with ultra-performance liquid chromatography or gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLCâMS/MS or GCâMS/MS). The recoveries of these pesticides (containing metabolites) in cabbage detected by the optimized method ranged between 80.9% and 99.9%, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 0.164-12.5%. The limit of quantification (LOQ) of the four pesticides was determined to be 0.01 mg/kg. The standard curve, accuracy, precision, and LOQ of the analysis method all met the requirements of pesticide residue detection. The optimized method was used to detect the dissipation dynamics and terminal residues in 12 regions. The dissipation half-lives of CTP, CFP, and LFR were 3.35-7.01 d, 2.29-4.75 d, and 3.24-6.80 d, respectively. The terminal residues of all these pesticides were below the maximum residue limits (MRLs). The dietary risk assessment indicated that the dietary risk probabilities for EB, CTP, CFP, and LFR were all less than 1 and were within the acceptable range. This study provides a comprehensive assessment of the residues and dietary risks of EB, CTP, CFP, and LFR for the scientific use of pesticides.

Caffeine is an emerging contaminant in aquatic environments. The study utilized a validated method to investigate the presence and distribution of caffeine in the surface water of the Yellow and Bohai Seas, urban rivers, and the Yantai estuary area. The analytical method conforms to EPA guidelines and exhibits a limit of quantification that is 200 times lower than that of prior investigations. The study revealed that the highest concentration of 1436.4 ng/L was found in convergence of ocean currents in the Yellow and Bohai Seas. The presence of larger populations and the process of urban industrialization have been observed to result in elevated levels of caffeine in offshore regions, confirming that caffeine can serve as a potential indicator of anthropogenic contamination. Fish larvae exhibited hypoactivity in response to caffeine exposure at environmentally relevant concentrations. The study revealed that caffeine pollution can have adverse effects on marine and offshore ecosystems. This emphasizes the importance of decreasing neurotoxic pollution in the aquatic environment.

To achieve the maximum therapeutic effects and minimize adverse effects of trimodal synergistic tumor therapies, a cost-effective programmed photothermal (PTT)-chemodynamic (CDT)-coordinated dual drug chemotherapy (CT) trimodal synergistic therapy strategy in chronological order is proposed. According to the status or volumes of the tumors, the intensity and time of each therapeutic modality are optimized, and three modalities are combined programmatically and work in chronological order. The optimal synergistic therapy begins with high-intensity PTT for 10 min to ablate larger tumors, followed by medium-intensity CDT for several hours to eliminate medium-sized tumors, and then low-intensity coordinated dual drugs CT lasts over 48 h to clear smaller residual tumors. Composite nanoparticles, made of Fe-coordinated polydopamine mixed with copper peroxide as the cores and their surface dotted with lots of doxorubicin-Fe(III)-gossypol infinite coordination polymers (ICPs), have been developed to implement the strategy. These composite nanoparticles show excellent synergistic effects with the minimum dose of therapeutic agents and result in nearly 100% tumor inhibition for mice bearing PC-3 tumors and no observed recurrence within 60 days of treatment. The ratios of the different therapeutic agents in the composite nanoparticles can be adjusted to accommodate different types of tumors with this cost-effective programmed trimodal therapy strategy.

BACKGROUND: Yttrium-90 ibritumomab tiuxetan [(90)Y-IT] is a CD20-targeted radio-immunotherapeutic agent. It has shown an excellent therapeutic activity with high tolerability against previously untreated follicular lymphoma (FL) and marginal zone B cell lymphoma (MZL). It is an attractive therapeutic option as the treatment schedule is short and convenient. The aim of our study is to determine the cost-effectiveness of (90)Y-IT in comparison to the standard-of-care bendamustine + rituximab (BR) in the first-line treatment of low-grade FL (LG-FL) and MZL in the real world. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We included all patients who were treated with standard-dose (90)Y-IT for previously untreated LG-FL and MZL at the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center (N = 51). A comparator arm with a historical cohort of previously untreated LG-FL and MZL patients who received BR was used (N = 92). RESULTS: Inverse propensity weighting was utilized to balance the 2 study arms. There were no differences in terms of overall response rate (100% vs. 98%, P = .18), complete response rate (94% vs. 95%, P = .91), or 5 years progression-free survival (76% vs. 75%, P = .63) between patients who received (90)Y-IT and BR, respectively. Within the first year, patients who received (90)Y-IT required an average of 4.5 fewer oncology clinic visits (P < .001), an average of 10 fewer days of therapeutic use (P < .001), and 40% less use of growth factors (P < .001) as compared to the BR group. The direct therapeutic cost of (90)Y-IT treatment was 54% less than that of 6 cycles of BR. CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that (90) Y-IT is more cost-effective than BR and is a viable alternative in up-front management of LG-FL and MZL.

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution brings great negative impacts to human health and social development. From the perspective of heterogeneity and the combination of national and urban analysis, this study aims to investigate the variation patterns of PM2.5 pollution and its determinants, using geographically and temporally weighted regression (GTWR) in 273 Chinese cities from 2015 to 2019. A comprehensive analytical framework was established, composed of 14 determinants from multi-dimensions, including population, economic development, technology, and natural conditions. The results indicated that: (1) PM2.5 pollution was most severe in winter and the least severe in summer, while the monthly, daily, and hourly variations showed "U"-shaped, pulse-shaped and "W"-shaped patterns; (2) Coastal cities in southeast China have better air quality than other cities, and the interaction between determinants enhanced the spatial disequilibrium of PM2.5 pollution; (3) The determinants showed significant heterogeneity on PM2.5 pollution-specifically, population density, trade openness, the secondary industry, and invention patents exhibited the strongest positive impacts on PM2.5 pollution in the North China Plain. Relative humidity, precipitation and per capita GDP were more effective in improving atmospheric quality in cities with serious PM2.5 pollution. Altitude and the proportion of built-up areas showed strong effects in western China. These findings will be conductive to formulating targeted and differentiated prevention strategies for regional air pollution control.

BACKGROUND: The fast-growing population of older Chinese immigrants and their segregated residences highlight the importance of understanding the role of neighborhood context in cognitive health. The segregation-cognition association is equivocal based on a limited number of studies among Hispanic and Asian Americans. To close the knowledge gap, this study examined the associations of neighborhood segregation and socioeconomic status (NSES) with cognitive functioning among older Chinese immigrants. METHODS: Four waves of cognitive performance tests were conducted in the Population Study of Chinese Elderly in Chicago (2011-2019) and linked to the 2010 to 2014 American Community Survey estimates of neighborhood contexts. NSES was a summary z-score of six census variables of education, income/wealth, and occupation. Neighborhood segregation was measured by the Index of Concentrations at the Extremes (ICE), which simultaneously assesses Chinese and English language use within a given census tract. There were 170 census tracts in the present sample of 2044 participants. Latent growth curve models with adjusted cluster robust standard errors were estimated. RESULTS: On average, cognitive functioning declined over time (B = -0.07, p < 0.001). After adjusting for individual-level predictors, living in high-NSES neighborhoods was associated with slower cognitive decline (B = 0.003, p = 0.04). ICE was not associated with cognitive functioning, but boosted the protective effect of high NSES on cognitive decline (B = 0.006, p = 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Neighborhood socioeconomic advantage was related to slower cognitive decline among older Chinese immigrants, especially among those living in neighborhoods with more English speakers or less segregation. This finding suggests complex associations between neighborhood context and cognitive health among Chinese immigrants.

Global use of pesticides brings uncertain risks to human and nontarget species via environmental matrix. Currently, various models for exposure risk assessment are developed and widely used to forecast the impact of pesticides on environmental organisms. In this study, five commonly used insecticides, seven herbicides and three fungicides were chosen to analyze the subsequent risks in groundwater in simulated scenarios using China-PEARL (Pesticide Emission Assessment at Regional and Local Scales) model. In addition, their exposure risks to soil organisms were characterized based on risk quotient (RQ) approach. The results indicated that 23.3% of the total 528 predicted environmental concentrations (PECs) of pesticides and respective metabolites in groundwater from six Chinese simulated locations with ten crops were above 10 µg L-1. Furthermore, acceptable human risks of pesticides in groundwater were observed for all simulation scenarios (RQ < 1). Based on the derived PECs in soil short-term and long-term exposure simulation scenarios, all compounds were evaluated to be with acceptable risks to soil organisms, except that imidacloprid was estimated to be with unacceptable chronic risk (RQ = 27.5) to earthworms. Overall, the present findings provide an opportunity for a more-comprehensive understanding of exposure toxicity risks of pesticides leaching into groundwater and soil.

Binocular stereoscopic matching is an essential method in computer vision, imitating human binocular technology to obtain distance information. Among plentiful stereo matching algorithms, Semi-Global Matching (SGM) is recognized as one of the most popular vision algorithms due to its relatively low power consumption and high accuracy, resulting in many excellent SGM-based hardware accelerators. However, vision algorithms, including SGM, are still somewhat inaccurate in actual long-range applications. Therefore, this paper proposes a disparity improvement strategy based on subpixel interpolation and disparity optimization post-processing using an area optimization strategy, hardware-friendly divider, split look-up table, and the clock alignment multi-directional disparity occlusion filling, and depth acquisition based on floating-point operations. The hardware architecture based on optimization algorithms is on the Stratix-IV platform. It consumes about 5.6 K LUTs, 12.8 K registers, and 2.5 M bits of on-chip memory. Meanwhile, the non-occlusion error rate of only 4.61% is about 1% better than the state-of-the-art works in the KITTI2015 dataset. The maximum working frequency can reach up to 98.28 MHz for the 640 × 480 resolution video and 128 disparity range with the power dissipation of 1.459 W and 320 frames per second processing speed.

This study aims to investigate the efficacy, safety, and cost-effecctiveness of Qizhi Weitong Granules in the treatment of functional dyspepsia. Specifically, two commonly used clinical protocols for the treatment of functional dyspepsia were selected: Qizhi Weitong Granules+Mosapride vs Mosapride alone(control). Meta-analysis of previous clinical studies was performed to examine the efficacy and safety, and pharmacoeconomic evaluation was carried out according to the results of the Meta-analysis. The cost-effectiveness analysis was carried out to elucidated the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio(ICER), and the sensitivity was analyzed with tornado dia-gram and Monte Carlo simulation. The willingness-to-pay threshold of patients for functional dyspepsia was investigated and compared with the ICER to evaluate whether Qizhi Weitong Granules was cost-effective. The result showed that the effective rate of Qizhi Weitong Granules combined with Mosapride in the treatment of functional dyspepsia was 95.49%, which was higher than that of Mosapride alone(73.30%)(OR=8.52, 95%CI[4.36, 16.64])(P<0.000 1). The two groups showed no significant difference in safety. The price of Qizhi Weitong Granules+Mosapride was higher than that of Mosapride alone. The ICER was 640.29 CNY, 1 506.67 CNY lower than the willingness-to-pay threshold. The sensitivity analysis showed that the analysis results were relatively stable. Thus, Qizhi Weitong Granules+Mosapride is safe, effective, and economical in the treatment of functional dyspepsia, which should be further promoted in clinical settings.

Previous studies have indicated that heavy metal levels in milk vary partly depending on environmental metal concentrations. Given the increasing consumption of milk in China, it is essential to pay attention to milk safety. We performed a systematic review of relevant published studies to evaluate the heavy metal levels in milk and dairy products and the associated health risks, discuss environmental sources of heavy metals, and propose future research directions. A literature search was implemented in the Web of Science Core Collection and PubMed using multiple keywords such as "metal," "milk," "dairy products," and "China". A total of 16 published studies that analyzed metal levels in milk and dairy products in 20 provincial administrative regions were included. Most studies detected toxic heavy metals in milk and dairy products samples, including mercury, lead, cadmium, chromium, and arsenic. The lead concentration in milk from these studies did not exceed the Chinese standard for milk. However, three studies detected relatively high lead levels in both commercial and raw milk, exceeding the European Commission standard. The polluted environment surrounding the farm, feed, and packaging materials are likely sources of metals in milk and dairy products. The hazard index for the 11 analyzed metal elements in milk and dairy products was lower than 1, indicating negligible non-carcinogenic health risks from exposure to these metals. Children are at a higher risk than adults. This review illustrates that research in this field is limited to China. More research should be conducted in the future, such as evaluating the contribution of each environmental source of metal in milk and dairy products.
