PM2.5 can deposit and partially dissolve in the pulmonary region. In order to be consistent with the reality of the pulmonary region and avoid overestimating the inhalation human health risk, the bioaccessibility of PM2.5 heavy metals and the deposition fraction (DF) urgently needs to be considered. This paper simulates the bioaccessibility of PM2.5 heavy metals in acidic intracellular and neutral extracellular deposition environments by simulating lung fluid. The multipath particle dosimetry model was used to simulate DF of PM2.5. According to the exposure assessment method of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the inhalation exposure dose threshold was calculated, and the human health risk with different inhalation exposure doses was compared. The bioaccessibility of heavy metals is 12.1−36.2%. The total DF of PM2.5 in adults was higher than that in children, and children were higher than adults in the pulmonary region, and gradually decreased with age. The inhalation exposure dose threshold is 0.04−14.2 mg·kg−1·day−1 for the non-carcinogenic exposure dose and 0.007−0.043 mg·kg−1·day−1 for the carcinogenic exposure dose. Cd and Pb in PM2.5 in the study area have a non-carcinogenic risk to human health (hazard index < 1), and Cd has no or a potential carcinogenic risk to human health. A revised inhalation health risk assessment may avoid overestimation.

Phthalates (PAEs) are widely used in personal care products (PCPs) and skin care packaging materials. Through national representative sampling, 328 childbearing-aged females in China were investigated by questionnaire, whose contact factors for 30 cosmetic products were collected. According to the daily exposure method and adverse cumulative effects of PAE exposure on female reproduction, we derived the ERα, ERß binding, and AR anti-androgenic effects. The utilization rates of acne cleanser, acne cream, cleanser (non-acne), and cream (non-acne) in volunteers were 21.90%, 22.22%, 51.63%, and 51.96%, respectively. Examining the data for PAEs in PCPs, the content of DBP (dibutyl phthalate) in them was significantly higher for tubes (0.26 ± 0.05 µg/g) and other packaging (pump type and metal tube) (0.25 ± 0.03 µg/g) than bowl (0.17 ± 0.04 µg/g). The DBP content of acne cream (0.27 ± 0.03 µg/g) was significantly higher than that of non-acne cream (0.17 ± 0.03 µg/g); likewise, there was significantly more DEHP (di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate) in acne cleanser (0.87 ± 0.15 µg/g) than non-acne cleanser (0.64 ± 0.36 µg/g). Students and office worker were the main consumers of PCPs; however, among all occupation groups, the daily exposure dose of PCPs for workers was highest (mean = 0.0004, 0.0002, 0.0009 µg/kg bw/day for DEP (diethyl phthalate), DBP, and DEHP, respectively). The cumulative indices of PAEs' exposure revealed that the level of ERα and ERß binding and AR anti-androgenic effects in workers was respectively 0.4935, 0.0186, and 0.2411 µg/kg bw/day. The risk index (HITDI and HIRfDs) of DEP, DBP, and DEHP was lower than their corresponding reference value (hazard index <1), but using PCPs may cause potential health risks. Therefore, we should pay attention to the adverse effects of PAEs on female reproductive functioning, especially the cumulative exposure of females of childbearing age.

The association between anemia and Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TCM) has not been well studied. To assess the effect of anemia on patients hospitalized with TCM, we identified 4733 patients with a primary diagnosis of TCM from the 2016 to 2018 National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database (the United States) using the International Classification of Diseases, 10th edition, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) code. Of these, 603 (12.7%) patients had a comorbidity of anemia and 4130 did not. After propensity score matching, we compared the in-hospital outcomes between the 2 groups (anemia vs nonanemia, n = 594 vs 1137). Patients with TCM with anemia had significantly higher rates of in-hospital complications, including cardiogenic shock (11.4% vs 4.0%, P < .001), ventricular arrhythmia (6.6% vs 3.6%, P = .008), acute kidney injury (22.7% vs 13.1%, P < .001), acute respiratory failure (22.6% vs 13.1%, P < .001), longer length of hospital stay (5.6 ± 5.8 days vs 3.6 ± 3.6 days, P < .001), and higher total charges (US$79 586 ± 10 2436 vs US$50 711 ± 42 639, P < .001). In conclusion, patients with anemia who were admitted for TCM were associated with a higher incidence of in-hospital complications compared with those without anemia.

Marine fish species are an important source of biologically valuable proteins, fats, fat-soluble vitamins, and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, but they are also susceptible to pollutants. Mercury is liable to bioamplify in the aquatic food chain, and the health risks posed by methylmercury (MeHg) could undermine the benefits of eating fish, so risk-benefit assessments are needed for those fish species regularly consumed. The purpose of this study was to analyze the concentrations of mercury and characteristics of fatty acids in marine fish harvested from Liaodong Gulf, China, so as to better understand the risk-benefit effects of marine fish consumption. We found that the ratio of MeHg to total Hg (THg) was normally distributed. The concentrations of THg and MeHg in marine fish muscles (14 species, a total of 239) ranged from 0.920 to 0.288 µg/g and 0.050 to 0.192 µg/g, respectively. There were no significant interannual differences in the muscles' concentrations of MeHg and THg, or of their fatty acids (p > 0.05). The proportion of total saturated fatty acids (SFAs) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) varied significantly among different marine fish-feeding habits (predacious, omnivorous, benthivorous and planktivorous), but the differences between polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) were not significant, which may be due to the undistinguished fatty acids (p < 0.05). The risk-benefit assessment using the intelligence quotient (IQ) scoring model revealed that all the studied marine fish had positive effects on child IQ under different consumption scenarios. Additionally, the integrated risk-benefit analysis for adult cardiovascular health showed that all the studied marine fish, but especially Ditrema temmincki Bleeker, are capable of reducing the relative cardiovascular risk posed by the MeHg in the fish. We conclude the positive effects of eating common marine fish from the Liaodong Gulf far outweigh their negative ones.

In order to investigate pollution level, chemical speciation and health risk of exposure to heavy metals in street dust from smelting district, we carried the following studies: (a). the differences in the morphology of street dust in smelting and non-smelting districts using a scanning electron microscope; (b). the chemical speciation and bioavailability of heavy metals in <100 µm and <63 µm particles near a smelting district using a modified three-stage BCR sequential extraction procedure and in vitro digestion test, respectively; (c). the evaluation of the non-carcinogenic risk of children and adults exposure to dust based on bioaccessibility. The results showed that most of the dust particles near Huludao Zinc Plant (HZP) were relatively solid with less porosity, which might originate from incompletely burned mineral particles from the smelting process. The concentrations of Pb, Cd and Cu were much higher than the background levels: 1560, 178.5 and 917.9 mg kg-1 in <100 µm dust samples, and 2099, 198.4, 1038 mg kg-1 in <63 µm dust samples, respectively. Pb was mostly present in the reducible fraction and the acid exchangeable fraction, while Cd and Cu were the most common heavy metals in the acid exchangeable fraction and oxidizable fraction, respectively. The rank order of bioaccessibility for the gastric and intestinal phase was Cd (58.13%) > Pb (50.00%) > Cu (19.19%) and Cd (20.36%) > Cu (15.67%) > Pb (5.08%), respectively. Hand-to-mouth ingestion poses the greatest non-carcinogenic exposure risk compared with other exposure pathways. When bioavailability is taken into account, children experienced higher non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of dust exposure compared with adults, and the <63 µm particles posed greater risks than <100 µm particles.

BACKGROUND: End-to-side (ETS) neurorrhaphy is a promising procedure for peripheral nerve repair, yet controversies regarding the efficacy of this repair in facial nerve anastomosis for facial paralysis still exist. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty rats were divided into three groups: intact control group, direct facial-hypoglossal ETS neurorrhaphy, and end-to-end (ETE) neurorrhaphy. Nerve regeneration was assessed with vibrissae motor performance, electrophysiological tests, retrograde labeling, and histomorphological analysis at 4 and 8 months postoperatively. RESULTS: Both ETS and ETE neurorrhaphies resulted in axonal regeneration and functional recovery of the recipient nerve but did not reach the level of intact controls. Significantly higher numbers of myelinated axons and labeled neurons giving regenerating fibers were found in group ETE compared with group ETS at both time points, consistent with the functional and electrophysiological recovery. Group ETS showed significantly smaller fiber diameter and thinner myelin thickness than group ETE at 4 months, but the difference became nonsignificant at 8 months. ETS neurorrhaphy had a very slight effect on the donor nerve, as determined electrophysiologically and histomorphologically. Sparsely distributed double-labeled neurons and relatively large amounts of single-labeled neurons contributing to reinnervation were found through double retrograde neuronal labeling in group ETS. Further quantitative analysis of the percentage of double-labeled neurons showed a pronounced tendency to decline from 19.8% at 4 months to 6.0% at 8 months postoperatively. CONCLUSION: Successful reinnervation after ETS neurorrhaphy could be achieved through both collateral sprouting and terminal sprouting, with the latter seeming to be the principal origin of motor nerve sprouting.
