RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Recently, it was reported that the adult X. tropicalis heart can regenerate in a nearly scar-free manner after injury via apical resection. Thus, a cardiac regeneration model in adult X. tropicalis provides a powerful tool for recapitulating a perfect regeneration phenomenon, elucidating the underlying molecular mechanisms of cardiac regeneration in an adult heart, and developing an interventional strategy for the improvement in the regeneration of an adult heart, which may be more applicable in mammals than in species with a lower degree of evolution. However, a noninvasive and rapid real-time method that can observe and measure the long-term dynamic change in the regenerated heart in living organisms to monitor and assess the regeneration and repair status in this model has not yet been established. RESULTS: In the present study, the methodology of echocardiographic assessment to characterize the morphology, anatomic structure and cardiac function of injured X. tropicalis hearts established by apex resection was established. The findings of this study demonstrated for the first time that small animal echocardiographic analysis can be used to assess the regeneration of X. tropicalis damaged heart in a scar-free perfect regeneration or nonperfect regeneration with adhesion manner via recovery of morphology and cardiac function. CONCLUSIONS: Small animal echocardiography is a reliable, noninvasive and rapid real-time method for observing and assessing the long-term dynamic changes in the regeneration of injured X. tropicalis hearts.

RESUMO

Semi-arid regions with little surface water commonly experience rapid water table decline rates. To hedge against the falling water table, production wells in central Mexico are commonly installed to depths of several hundred meters below the present water table and constructed as open boreholes or perforated casings across their entire length. Such wells represent highly conductive pathways leading to non-negligible flow across chemically distinct layers of an aquifer-a phenomenon known as ambient flow. The objectives of this study were to estimate the rate of ambient flow in seven production wells utilizing an end-member mixing model that is constrained by the observed transient chemical composition of produced water. The end-member chemical composition of the upper and lower layers of an urban aquifer that overlies geothermal heat is estimated to anticipate the future quality of this sole source of water for a rapidly growing urban area. The comprehensive water chemistry produced by seven continuously perforated municipal production wells, spanning three geologically unique zones across the city of San Miguel de Allende in Guanajuato State, was monitored during one day of pumping. The concentration of conservative constituents gradually converged on steady-state values. The model indicates that, relative to the lower aquifer, the upper aquifer generally has higher specific conductance (SC), chloride (Cl), nitrate (NO3), calcium (Ca), barium (Ba) and magnesium (Mg). The lower aquifer generally has a higher temperature, sodium (Na), boron (B), arsenic (As) and radon (Rn). Ambient flow ranged from 33.1 L/min to 225.7 L/min across the seven wells, but this rate for a given well varied depending on which tracer was used. This new 3D understanding of the chemical stratification of the aquifer suggests that as water tables continue to fall, concentrations of geothermally associated contaminants of concern will increase in the near future, potentially jeopardizing the safety of municipal drinking water.

RESUMO

China attaches great importance to international cooperation on climate change, especially working with the Belt and Road Initiative relevant partners. From a perspective on carbon emissions and economic spillover effects, this study explores how China and the Belt and Road Initiative countries can work together to cope with climate change. It applies a three-region spillover effects model, based on the multi-regional input-output table and satellite extensions data of the Eora database, to examine mutual carbon emissions and economic spillover effects between China and the Belt and Road Initiative countries. The results show that: (1) Mutual carbon emissions spillover effects exist between China and the BRI countries, which is an important premise for them to cooperate responding to climate change. (2) There are great differences in carbon emission spillover effects among different sectors. Thus, optimizing the trade structure can bring benefits to carbon reduction for both sides. (3) The sectoral order of carbon emissions spillover effects, and economic spillover effects, is not consistent. In order to achieve an economic and environmental win-win, it is necessary to increase bilateral trade in those sectors with large economic spillover effects, and reduce other sectors with large carbon emissions spillover effects.

RESUMO

Electric power industry, as one of the main industries leading to the increase of China's carbon emissions, accounts for about 40% of the total carbon emissions. It is of great practical significance to study the influencing factors of carbon emission decoupling index in power industry and put forward relevant policy suggestions. Based on the decoupling index of China's electric power industry from 1995 to 2018, this paper explores the influence of each index on the decoupling index through the autoregressive- distributed lag model. It turns out that the policy will significantly change the rate of change of carbon emissions and the rate of economic growth, but the impact of the policy is extremely short-lived; power generation structure, environmental regulations, and total lighting value at night play a positive role in promoting the decoupling index, while thermal power fuel efficiency and power generation conversion ratio play a negative role in inhibiting the decoupling index. In addition, the influence of power generation structure, environmental regulations, and the total value of night light on decoupling index also has a lagging and cumulative effect. Therefore, we propose targeted policy recommendations for policy formulation, green development, and low carbon construction in China's power industry from different perspectives based on the findings of the study.

RESUMO

The balance between economic development and environmental governance has always been the focus of attention, and this has become a key issue facing in China. In recent years, the means of improving the environment through taxation are common, and it is more in line with China's national conditions. Carbon tax and fuel tax are considered to be effective environmental supervision measures, and the implementation of this policy is bound to have a critical impact on the advance of economic level. However, the implementation effects of these two mechanisms may be different, and they may also have various effects on regional development. Therefore, based on the panel data of China's 29 provinces from 2008 to 2018, we adopt the spatial autocorrelation method to explore the relationship between the economic levels of various areas. Then, establishing the panel spatial econometric model of economic growth and carbon tax, economic growth and fuel tax respectively to compare the implementation effects of the two tax policies. It turns out that there is a positive correlation between the economic growth of 29 provinces in China. And whether choosing to levy carbon tax or fuel tax, they all have their own advantages and disadvantages. Finally, according to the results of empirical analysis results, some relevant policy suggestions are put forward.

RESUMO

Background and Aims: The over-prescription of antibiotics is thought to represent a major threat to public health worldwide and is more frequently observed in some low- and middle-income countries. In the Asia-Pacific region, economic development, health care organization and population demographics are very heterogenous. The objective of this survey was to investigate antibiotic use and probiotic co-prescription among adult patients in this area. Methods: An online survey of physicians from seven countries of the Asia-Pacific region (Australia, Japan, Indonesia, India, China, Singapore and South Korea) was performed in 2018. The questionnaire explored current practices of physicians concerning antibiotics and probiotics and factors related to prescribing decisions. Results: A total of 387 general practitioners and 350 gastroenterologists completed the questionnaire. Physicians in Australia, Japan and South-Korea were low prescribers of antibiotics (11% to 19% of visits resulted in an antibiotic prescription), while physicians in Indonesia, India, China and Singapore were high prescribers (41% to 61%). A large majority (85%) of physicians agreed that antibiotics disrupted intestinal microbiota. The rates of co-prescription of probiotics varied from 16% in Japan to 39% in Singapore (overall, 27%). Conditions considered by physicians to be prevented by probiotics were mostly antibiotic-associated diarrhea (62%) and Clostridium difficile colitis (43%). Conclusions: Rates of probiotic co-prescription remain low in many countries although the negative effects of antibiotics on the gut microbiota and the benefits of co-prescribing probiotics are generally known.

RESUMO

Organic pollutants are common in the environment, very difficult to remove, and pose a serious threat to human health. Probabilistic risk assessment advances conservative single-point estimation and brings a new perspective to risk assessment. From 2009 to 2019, we monitored the distribution of major pollutants in an industrial park in Northeastern China. The result showed the maximum concentration of benzene reached 73,680 µg/L in 2009, benzo[a]pyrene reached 36.80 ng/L in 2016. These concentrations are significantly above the levels set by Chinese regulatory agencies. The single-factor index increases year by year, and pollutants gradually spread from the pollution leakage source to surrounding areas. A new method was used to quantify the human health risk from groundwater organic pollution accurately, based on the triangular fuzzy numbers coupled with the Monte Carlo simulation. The Monte Carlo simulation was used to simulate the triangular fuzzy numbers. This simplified the operation between the triangular fuzzy numbers and their function successfully and obtained the risk as a set of values. The results indicated that non-carcinogenic risk was negligible in all age groups (children, adolescents, and adults). Conversely, when it comes to carcinogenic risks, adults were about 50-270 times the tolerable level of risk due to long exposure years and wide skin contact areas. Oral ingestion played an essential role in total exposure (>90%) compared to dermal contact. Control of exposure duration and intake should be prioritized when making decisions to reduce risk uncertainty. Monte Carlo simulation-triangular fuzzy numbers can effectively reduce the risk of uncertainty and reflect the complex conditions of the groundwater environment for small amounts of data or inaccurate data.

RESUMO

China's transportation industry is entering a stage of high-quality development. Carbon emissions and environmental protection issues have put pressure on the construction of a green and low-carbon transportation system, and the transportation industry has become one of the industries with the fastest growth in carbon emissions. Therefore, it is of great significance to study the influencing factors of carbon dioxide emissions in the transportation industry and predict its carbon emissions. This article first thoroughly analyzes the main sources of carbon emissions in the transportation industry, including nine major energy consumption sources such as coal, gasoline, and diesel, and obtains the carbon emission values from 2000 to 2017. Secondly, a linear regression analysis was performed on 13 pre-selected influencing factors and CO2 emissions in the transportation industry. In order to obtain the potential similarities between the factors, factor 13 is divided into four categories: economic scale, population size, transportation structure, and energy consumption. Each category and factor analysis is divided into four potential factors. Third, a training model was established based on the data from 2000 to 2012. Four algorithms, neural network (BP), extreme learning machine (ELM), genetic algorithm optimized neural network (GA-BP), and genetic algorithm optimized extreme learning machine (GA-ELM) are used to predict 2013 to 2017 and compare the predicted value of its respective algorithm with the actual value. Finally, the results show that the genetic algorithm optimized extreme learning machine (GA-ELM) hybrid heuristic algorithm has the highest degree of fit between the predicted value and the true value, which further illustrates the carbon emissions of the hybrid heuristic algorithm in the transportation industry. For the superiority of the prediction, the study also shows that the four influencing factors seriously affect the carbon emissions of the transportation industry. Therefore, accelerating the upgrading of the transportation structure and changing the proportion of energy consumption will be important measures for the transportation sector to control carbon emissions in the next step, so as to promote the sustainable development of the transportation system.

RESUMO

The increasing concern about the environmental issue and its serious adverse effects on human health has made China's industrial green transformation being a matter of public concern. In this study, a network slack-based measure (NSBM) was applied to explore China's industrial green development level from the perspective of environmental welfare efficiency (EWE), considering not only the impact of industrial development on environment and economy, but also the impact on human well-being. Based on the data of 30 provincial administrative regions in China from 2004 to 2017, the comprehensive efficiency (CE) of China's industrial sector was measured and decomposed. The results show that the industrial production efficiency (IPE) is much higher than the EWE, and the improvement of the EWE will be the key to realize the green transformation of China's industry. On this basis, considering the effects of spatial interaction, the spatial Durbin model was established to analyze the driving factors of EWE. Finally, this research puts forward promotion path of industrial green development.

RESUMO

Concentrations of potentially toxic metals including Cd, Cu, Pb, Cr, U, Th in surface water and sediment samples collected from a river were analyzed to assess the contaminations, distribution characteristics, and sources of these metals. The contents of the metals were lower than the standard levels set by World Health Organization (WHO) for drinking water. However, U and Th contents were far beyond the background values of surface water. The concentrations of Cd, Cr, and U in sediments were higher than the background values and the Probable Effect Level (PEL) of sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) which may result in high potential harmful biological effects to aquatic ecosystems. Based on the contamination factor (CF), geo-accumulation index (Igeo), and potential ecological risk index (RI), Cd, Cr, and U were considered to be the metals that mainly contribute to the contamination of sediments. The calculation results also indicated that the sites adjacent to the uranium ore field were highly polluted. Results of cluster analysis, principal component analysis, and correlation analysis revealed that Cr, Pb, U, and Th were highly correlated with each other. These metals mainly originated from both anthropogenic sources and natural processes, especially emissions from uranium mining and quarrying, whereas Cd mostly came from anthropogenic sources (agricultural activities) of the upper reaches of the river.

RESUMO

The Asia-Pacific region is diverse, with regard to ethnicity, culture, and economic development incorporating some of the world's least and most developed nations. Gastrointestinal diseases are common in the Asia-Pacific region, and their prevalence, presentation, and management vary considerably within the region. There is growing evidence for an important role for the human gut microbiota in gastrointestinal health. As a consequence, geographic variations in the composition of the gut microbiota may contribute to variations in both the prevalence and response to therapy of specific diseases. Probiotics have been proposed as a valuable option in the prevention and treatment of a number of gastrointestinal illnesses, but the quality of available evidence to support their efficacy is variable. A meeting of international experts in adult and pediatric gastroenterology was held at the Sorbonne University, Paris, France, on April 11 and 12, 2016, to discuss current evidence supporting the use of probiotics in gastrointestinal disorders in the Asia-Pacific region. This article provides an overview of the discussions held at this meeting and recommends the formation of an Asia-Pacific Consortium on Gut Microbiota similar to those established in Europe and North America.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To assess the depressive status and its influence on Chinese HIV-1(+) population, and how it was influenced by highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) and the CD4(+) T cell count. METHODS: Anti-HIV-1(+) patients (age between 18 and 65 years old) who had met the criteria to commence the anti-HIV treatment but had not yet started, were selected from the Beijing Ditan Hospital between March 2011 and June 2012. BDI-II (Beck Depression Inventory) and a self-designed questionnaire were used to evaluate the baseline and the status of 48 weeks post the HAART treatment. Statistically, t test and the Wilcoxon rank sum test were used to compare the BDI scores under different conditions and before/after the HAART. RESULTS: (1) Of 100 subjects: male to female ratio was 99:1; the average age was 31.37 ± 5.58 years; the average education background was of 13.13 ± 3.51 years; the unemployed percentage was 4%; time before being identified as anti-HIV-1(+) was 5.0 (1.0 - 21.0) months; the percentage being infected through homosexual contact was 83%. The baseline BDI score was 6.0 (3 - 10.25). (2) There was no significant difference (P > 0.05) in BDI score between those subjects having had education less or more than 12 years; the BDI score of patients whose anti-HIV-1(+) was significantly higher (P < 0.05) among those discovered within the past 6 months than those more than 6 months. The BDI score of patients whose baseline CD4(+) T cell count below 200 cells/µl was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than those with baseline CD4(+) T cell count greater than 200 cells/µl. The CD4(+) T cell count was significantly high (P < 0.001) after 48 weeks of anti-viral treatment, but the BDI score was not significantly different (P > 0.05). There was no significant change (P > 0.05) in the proportion of patients with different degrees of BDI score before and after 48 weeks of antiviral treatment. CONCLUSION: Depression in HIV patients was most overt in the first six months when they were aware of the infection. The degree of depression was more severe in patients with baseline CD4(+) T cell count less than 200 cells/µl with improvement of immunity after the HAART did not alleviate the level of depression.

RESUMO

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), which are produced by several species including insects, other animals, micro-organisms and synthesis, are a critical component of the natural defense system. With the growing problem of pathogenic organisms resistant to conventional antibiotics, especially with the emergence of NDM-1, there is increased interest in the pharmacological application of AMPs. They can protect against a broad array of infectious agents, such as bacteria, fungi, parasite, virus and cancer cells. AMPs have a very good future in the application in pharmaceuticals industry and food additive. This review focuses on the AMPs from different origins in these recent years, and discusses their various functions and relative mechanisms of action. It will provide some detailed files for clinical research of pharmaceuticals industry and food additive in application.
