RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To report the incidence, risk factors and management of postoperative complications after horizontal strabismus surgery. DESIGN: Retrospective Cohort study. PARTICIPANTS: The study assessed 1,273 patients with 1,035 cases of exotropia and 238 cases of esotropia, with a minimum 18-month follow-up. METHODS: Retrospective review of strabismus operation patients' medical records included baseline demographics, age at surgery, pre/postoperative visual acuity, and deviation. Complications were categorized as surgical site (infection, scarring, cyst, granuloma, ischemia) and strabismus-related (recurrence, diplopia), with analysis of incidence, risk factors, and management. RESULTS: Among surgical site complications, the incidence of infection, pyogenic granuloma, and anterior segment ischemia were similar between the exotropia (0.3%, 0.3%, 0.2%) and esotropia (0.8%, 0%, 0.4%) groups (p = .221, 0.406, 0.515). In contrast, the esotropia group presented a higher risk of conjunctival inclusion cyst and conjunctival scar than the exotropia group, with incidences of 5.0% vs 2.2% and 6.3% vs 1.3%, respectively (p = .004, <0.001). Regarding strabismus complications, the incidence of early recurrence was not significant between the two groups, with 10.0% in the exotropia group and 10.5% in the esotropia group (p = .553). Older age and poor initial visual acuity were associated with early recurrence (p < .001). The esotropia group had a higher risk of persistent diplopia than the exotropia group, with incidences of 4.2% vs 2.0%, respectively (p = .003). CONCLUSION: Esotropia carries a higher risk of conjunctival inclusion cysts, conjunctival scarring, and persistent diplopia compared to the exotropia group, while both groups exhibit similar rates of early recurrence and other surgical site complications.

RESUMO

The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the use of various communication technologies to achieve the interconnection of everything in cyberspace, and to achieve smart home and intelligent transportation, thus generating unprecedented amounts of data. In the financial sharing center, all businesses can extract effective data from these massive databases for analysis, and use data analysis tools to collect business, financial, human, process, knowledge and social data. At present, various types of IT (Internet Technology) systems have been widely used in financial sharing centers. However, a large number of sensitive data have also been generated. In order to protect these sensitive data, there is a high requirement for the personal information of IT system operation and financial sharing center personnel. In order to protect user data privacy, the optimal and most effective use of IT systems is an important issue that must be considered in privacy management. At present, there are many algorithms to protect data and privacy, but the effect is not ideal. Considering the balance between privacy issues, this paper proposed a K-means clustering algorithm based on IoT public cloud privacy protection technology to analyze the performance management of financial sharing center. The research results showed that before the improvement, the average number of employees who were dissatisfied with the post training ability and information platform construction ability of the financial sharing center was 57.9 and 57.8% respectively, more than half of them. After the improvement of IoT based public cloud privacy protection, the average number of employees dissatisfied with the post training ability and information platform construction ability of the financial sharing center was 5 and 3.9%, far less than the data prior to the improvement. It showed that IoT public cloud privacy protection was conducive to the performance management of the financial sharing center, and the relationship between the two was positive.

RESUMO

It is necessary to emphasize both the process and results of performance management to find the balance between quality and quantity needed to ensure the sustainable development of universities to make the best use of limited educational resources and meet the diverse needs of students. This study applies failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) to analyze obstacles to university sustainability by constructing complete risk assessment modes and reference indicators. The neutrosophic set theory was incorporated into the FMEA to account for information uncertainty and asymmetry. A specialist team then evaluated the importance of the risk factors using neutrosophic indifference threshold-based attribute ratio analysis to determine objective weights for the risk factors. Furthermore, the neutrosophic technique for order preference by similarity to the ideal solution based on aspiration level (N-TOPSIS-AL) is employed to aggregate the total risk scores of the failure modes. Using neutrosophic sets to measure truth, falsity, and indeterminacy in the assessment significantly improve the adaptability of the fuzzy theory to real-world problems. The study results indicate that when assessing university affairs management and analyzing possible risks, priority must be given to the occurrence of risks and that the lack of educational facilities is the riskiest item in the specialist assessment. The proposed assessment model can be applied as a basis for university sustainability assessments to accelerate the development of other forward-looking approaches.

RESUMO

Importance: Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) have been recognized as the standard treatment for patients with non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLCs) and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) sequence variation. Although TKIs have been reported to cause cardiotoxicity, they are widely administered owing to the high prevalence of EGFR sequence variation in Taiwan. Objective: To compare the outcomes of death and major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events among patients with NSCLC who use and do not use TKIs in a national cohort. Design, Setting, and Participants: Using data from the Taiwanese National Health Insurance Research Database and National Cancer Registry, patients treated for NSCLC from 2011 to 2018 were identified, and their outcomes were analyzed, including death and major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCEs; such as heart failure, acute myocardial infarction, and ischemic stroke) after adjusting for age, sex, cancer stage, comorbidities, anticancer therapies, and cardiovascular drugs. The median follow-up duration was 1.45 years. The analyses were performed from September 2022 to March 2023. Exposures: TKIs. Main Outcomes and Measures: Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate death and MACCEs in patients treated with and without TKIs. Given that death may reduce the incidence of cardiovascular events, the competing risk method was used to calculate the MACCE risk after adjustment for all potential confounders. Results: Overall, 24 129 patients treated with TKIs were matched with 24 129 patients who did not receive TKIs (24 215 [50.18%] were female; and the mean [SD] age was 66.93 [12.37] years). Compared with those not receiving TKIs, the TKI group presented with a significantly lower hazard ratio (HR) of all-cause death (adjusted HR, 0.76; 95% CI, 0.75-0.78; P < .001), and the reason for death was primarily cancer. In contrast, the HR of MACCEs significantly increased (subdistribution HR, 1.22; 95% CI, 1.16-1.29; P < .001) in the TKI group. Furthermore, afatinib use was associated with a significantly reduced risk of death among patients receiving various TKIs (adjusted HR, 0.90; 95% CI, 0.85-0.94; P < .001) compared with those receiving erlotinib and gefitinib, although the outcomes of MACCEs were similar between the 2 groups. Conclusions and Relevance: In this cohort study of patients with NSCLC, TKI use was associated with reduced HRs of cancer-related death but increased HRs of MACCEs. These findings suggest the importance of close monitoring of cardiovascular problems in individuals receiving TKIs.

RESUMO

In response to China's aims of becoming "carbon-neutral," the development of green industries such as renewable energy and recycling has flourished. Based on 2015 and 2019 data, this study uses spatial autocorrelation to analyze the evolution of land use by the green industries in Jiangsu Province. The Geodetector model was also applied to identify the driving factors underlying these spatial patterns. The spatial variability of green industrial land use in Jiangsu Province is significant, with the land-use area gradually decreasing from Southern to Northern Jiangsu. In terms of spatial-temporal changes, there is an increase in land use and a trend of expansion in the central and northern regions of Jiangsu. Land use by green industries in the province exhibits a more significant spatial clustering pattern but with a weakened clustering effect. The clustering types are mainly H-H and L-L, with the H-H type distributed mainly in the Su-Xi-Chang region and the L-L type distributed mainly in the Northern Jiangsu region. The levels of technology, economic development, industrialization, and industrial diversification are important individual driving factors, and the interaction among the different factors enhances their driving forces. This study suggests that spatial spillover effects should be focused to promote the coordinated development of regional energy-saving and environmental protection industries. At the same time, joint efforts should be made from the aspects of resources, government, economy, and related industries to promote the agglomeration of land for energy-saving and environmental protection industries.

RESUMO

This study investigated natural gamma emitting radionuclides 40K and 226Ra in rice consumed in Taiwan. Thirty rice samples, collected from local markets, included 24 local rice and 6 imported rice samples. Radionuclide activities were 24.05 ± 10.21 and 0.62 ± 0.61 Bq/kg for 40Kand 226Ra for all rice samples. The activity of each radionuclide was insignificantly different for local and imported samples (p = 0.33 and 0.52 for 40K and 226Ra, respectively). The annual effective doses from rice consumption were estimated to be 6.80 ± 2.89 and 7.86 ± 7.81 µSv/y for 40K and 226Ra, respectively, and the sum ingestion dose of 226Ra and 40K was 14.66 ± 8.57 µSv/y. These values were one order of magnitude less than the 290 µSv/y world average of the ingestion exposure from natural sources. The results suggest that rice consumption in Taiwan is radiologically safe for the investigated radionuclides.

RESUMO

Urbanization and aging populations are threatening the sustainability of rural development around the world. Improving the happiness of rural residents is closely related not only to rural development but also to the harmony and stability of a country. Sustainable development has become an important strategy for China's rural areas. Although withdrawal from rural homesteads is an important issue in rural land policy, few researchers have examined the determinants of the subjective well-being of farmers following withdrawal. The current paper investigated 315 rural residents under three models of the "withdrawal from homestead" policy in Jinjiang City, Fujian Province, China. The application of the orderly probit model revealed how satisfaction with economic, social, environment, cultural, and policy factors impacted their subjective well-being. The pooled results showed that satisfaction with cultural and policy factors had no significant impact; however, the other aspects significantly promoted their subjective well-being. The empirical model with interaction terms indicated the significant positive impact of economic, environmental, and social factors on subjective well-being under the index replacement model, while only environment and social factors exerted a significant positive impact under the asset replacement and monetary compensation models. Corresponding policy implications are discussed.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Taiwan has the highest prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Impaired cognition and quality of life are significant phenomena in the late stages of CKD. We sought to obtain an overview and the attributable effect of impaired glomerular filtration on multiple domains in cognition and dimensions of quality of life for community-based healthy older adults in Taiwan. METHODS: The study was derived from the Nutrition and Health Survey in Taiwan (NAHSIT) 2013-2016, a nationwide cross-sectional study conducted to sample healthy, community-based older adults aged ≥65 years in Taiwan. Participants were categorized into four CKD groups: CKD stage 1, stage 2, stages 3a and 3b, and stages 4-5. The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the QoL questionnaire derived from the 12-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-12) were measured. Generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) and principal component regressions were employed for the analysis and validation, respectively. RESULTS: Participants with moderate CKD (stages 3a and 3b) showed deficits in global MMSE, domain orientation to time, calculation, complex commands, and role-physical and vitality in QoL questionnaires. In GLMMs, impaired eGFR per 30 mL/min/1.73 m² was associated with lower global MMSE scores (ß = -0.807, standard error [SE] = 0.235, P = 0.0007), domain orientation to time (ß = -0.155, SE = 0.047, P = 0.0011), calculation (ß = -0.338, SE = 0.109, P = 0.0020), complex commands (ß = -0.156, SE = 0.079, P = 0.0494), and role-physical (ß = -2.219, SE = 0.779, P = 0.0046) dimensions of QoL. CONCLUSIONS: Elderly Han Chinese adults with moderately impaired renal filtration could manifest cognitive deficits in orientation to time, calculation, and impaired quality of life in physical role functioning.

RESUMO

Open transosseous repair was historically considered the gold-standard surgical solution for rotator cuff tears; however, with advancements in arthroscopic surgery, this procedure was largely replaced by anchor-based techniques. Yet, the ability of anchor-based techniques to achieve similar biomechanical fixation remains uncertain. In this article, we describe a reproducible, economical, arthroscopic anchorless transosseous rotator cuff repair technique that uses an Omega configuration. This technique involves two bone tunnels and four high-strength polyethylene sutures and is suitable for medium-to-large rotator cuff tears that would alternatively need multiple anchors. This procedure not only maximizes the tendon-footprint contact area without using any implanted device but also theoretically lowers the bone laceration rate and is cost effective. In the current Technical Note, the procedure is described in detail along with several tips and tricks. CLASSIFICATIONS: Level I, shoulder; Level II, rotator cuff.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. It has also imposed a substantial economic and social burden on the health care system. In Taiwan, a nationwide COPD pay-for-performance (P4P) program was designed to improve the quality of COPD-related care by introducing financial incentives for health care providers and employing a multidisciplinary team to deliver guideline-based, integrated care for patients with COPD, reducing adverse outcomes, especially COPD exacerbation. However, the results of a survey of the effectiveness of the pay-for-performance program in COPD management were inconclusive. To address this knowledge gap, this study evaluated the effectiveness of the COPD P4P program in Taiwan. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used data from Taiwan's National Health Insurance claims database and nationwide COPD P4P enrollment program records from June 2016 to December 2018. Patients with COPD were classified into P4P and non-P4P groups. Patients in the P4P group were matched at a ratio of 1:1 based on age, gender, region, accreditation level, Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), and inhaled medication prescription type to create the non-P4P group. A difference-in-difference analysis was used to evaluate the influence of the P4P program on the likelihood of COPD exacerbation, namely COPD-related emergency department (ED) visit, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, or hospitalization. RESULTS: The final sample of 14,288 patients comprised 7144 in each of the P4P and non-P4P groups. The prevalence of COPD-related ED visits, ICU admissions, and hospitalizations was higher in the P4P group than in the non-P4P group 1 year before enrollment. After enrollment, the P4P group exhibited a greater decrease in the prevalence of COPD-related ED visits and hospitalizations than the non-P4P group (ED visit: -2.98%, p<0.05, 95% confidence interval [CI]: -0.277 to -0.086; hospitalization: -1.62%, p<0.05, 95% CI: -0.232 to -0.020), whereas no significant difference was observed between the groups in terms of the changes in the prevalence of COPD-related ICU admissions. CONCLUSION: The COPD P4P program exerted a positive net effect on reducing the likelihood of COPD exacerbation, namely COPD-related ED visits and hospitalizations. Future studies should examine the long-term cost-effectiveness of the COPD P4P program.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The study aimed to reveal how the fraction of inspired oxygen (FIO2) affected the value of mixed venous oxygen saturation (SvO2) and the accuracy of Fick-equation-based cardiac output (Fick-CO). METHODS: Forty two adult patients who underwent elective cardiac surgery were enrolled and randomly divided into 2 groups: FIO2 < 0.7 or >0.85. Under stable general anesthesia, thermodilution-derived cardiac output (TD-CO), SvO2, venous partial pressure of oxygen, hemoglobin, arterial oxygen saturation, arterial partial pressure of oxygen, and blood pH levels were recorded before surgical incision. RESULTS: Significant differences in FIO2 values were observed between the 2 groups (0.56 ±â€Š0.08 in the <70% group and 0.92 ±â€Š0.03 in the >0.85 group; P < .001). The increasing FIO2 values lead to increases in SvO2, venous partial pressure of oxygen, and arterial partial pressure of oxygen, with little effects on cardiac output and hemoglobin levels. When comparing to TD-CO, the calculated Fick-CO in both groups had moderate Pearson correlations and similar linear regression results. Although the FIO2 <0.7 group presented a less mean bias and a smaller limits of agreement, neither group met the percentage error criteria of <30% in Bland-Altman analysis. CONCLUSION: Increased FIO2 may influence the interpretation of SvO2 and the exacerbation of Fick-CO estimation, which could affect clinical management. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov ID number: NCT04265924, retrospectively registered (Date of registration: February 9, 2020).

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Differences exist regarding post-stroke cognitive outcomes. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study investigates the potential factors associated with post-stroke cognitive performance and trajectories. METHODS: We performed a prospective cohort study using serial monitoring of cognitive function over a 1-year period after a first-ever ischemic stroke. Small vessel disease (SVD) burden and hippocampal atrophy (HA) were evaluated using the modified cerebral small vessel disease scores (mCSVD) and medial temporal atrophy score (MTA) scores. A generalized estimating equation (GEE) model and a group-based trajectory model (GBTM) was used to analyze the potential factors associated with post-stroke cognitive outcomes. RESULTS: A total of 112 patients were enrolled. The GEE model showed that all patients, regardless of initial cognitive performance, had a tendency to show an increase in the Montreal Cognitive Assessment over time. The cognitive performance was better in male patients with higher education levels (p = 0.046 and p < 0.001, respectively), but tended to be worse in patients with higher SVD burden and HA. The GBTM model grouped patients into low, intermediate, and high performance (LP, IP, and HP) after stroke. A higher SVD burden, rather than HA and initial stroke severity and location, independently predicted a higher odds of poor post-stroke cognitive trajectory (being in the LP group) after stroke (adjusted odds ratio 2.74, 95%CI 1.09-6.86). CONCLUSION: In patients with first-ever mild stroke, cognitive improvement over time was evident. The detrimental impact of the SVD burden may outweigh the effect of HA or acute stroke insult on the post-stroke cognitive trajectory during the 1-year follow-up.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: In Taiwan, rotavirus vaccination was implemented in 2006 in the private sector. The population-based impact of rotavirus vaccination on gastroenteritis and comorbidities of children remains under-investigated.We analyzed the annual prevalence of rotavirus-related disease, including gastroenteritis, convulsions, epilepsy, type I diabetes mellitus, intussusception, and biliary atresia among children under 5 years of age. Data were collected from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database, a nationwide population-based database. A 16-year retrospective cohort study was conducted between 2000 and 2015.Among children <5 years of age, the prevalence of gastroenteritis decreased after 2012 (44,259.69 per 100 thousands) and remained lower through 2015 (39,931.11per 100 thousands, P < .001). The prevalence of convulsions rose steadily and significantly from 2007 (775.90 per 100 thousands) to 2015 (962.17 per 100 thousands, P < .001). The prevalence of epilepsy decreased significantly until reaching a nadir in 2013 (from 501.56 to 293.53 per 100 thousands, P < .001). The prevalence of biliary atresia tended upward, and surged suddenly in 2007 with a peak in 2013 (18.74 per 100 thousands). Among infants (<1 year of age) from 2000 to 2015, the prevalence of gastroenteritis declined steadily, and more rapidly after 2007 (22,513 to 17,285 per 100 thousands). In Taiwan, after introducing rotavirus vaccination, gastroenteritis in young children decreased, especially in infancy. However, gastroenteritis is still common in children, given other emerging pathogens. Our results highlight the impact of rotavirus vaccines on children's health in Taiwan and provide indications for future preventive medicine and healthcare strategies in children.

RESUMO

Hypoxia is a common feature of solid tumors that increases tumor invasiveness and resistance to radiotherapy (RT) and chemotherapy. Local application of anlotinib (AL) might increase the regulation of new blood vessel growth and improve tumor hypoxia in RT. Therefore, it is essential to fully understand the drug delivery system of AL. Herein, we applied hypoxia imaging using micro fluorine-18-fluoromisonidazole positron emission tomography/computed tomography (micro 18F-FMISO PET/CT) to assess responses to intratumoral injections of an AL hydrogel (AL-HA-Tyr) combined with RT in mice bearing Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC). We formed AL-HA-Tyr by encapsulating AL with hyaluronic acid-tyramine (HA-Tyr) conjugates via the oxidative coupling of tyramine moieties catalyzed by H2O2 and horseradish peroxidase. AL-HA-Tyr restrained the proliferation of human umbilical endothelial cells (HUVECs) in colony formation assays in vitro (p < 0.001). We established a subcutaneous LLC xenograft model using C57BL/6J mice that were randomly assigned to six groups that were treated with AL, HA-Tyr, AL-HA-Tyr, RT, and RT+AL-HA-Tyr, or untreated (controls). Tumor volume and weight were dynamically measured. Post treatment changes in hypoxia were assessed in some mice using micro 18F-FMISO PET/CT, and survival was assessed in others. We histopathologically examined toxicity in visceral tissues and Ki-67, VEGF-A, γ-H2AX, and HIF-1α expression using immunohistochemistry. Direct intratumoral injections of AL-HA-Tyr exerted anti-tumor effects and improved hypoxia like orally administered AL (p > 0.05), but reduced visceral toxicity and prolonged survival. The uptake of 18F-FMISO did not significantly differ among the AL, AL-HA-Tyr, and RT+AL-HA-Tyr treated groups. Compared with the other agents, RT+AL-HA-Tyr decreased HIF-1α, Ki67, and VEGF-A expression, and increased γ-H2AX levels in tumor cells. Overall, compared with AL and AL-HA-Tyr, RT+AL-HA-Tyr improved tumor hypoxia, enhanced anti-tumor effects, and prolonged the survival of mice bearing LLC.

RESUMO

A recent review by Montag et al. raised a taxonomical argument about internet addiction. We propose a two-dimensional taxonomy of internet addiction by both the device and the content as the solution. For the assessment of smartphone addiction, measurements should be based on functional impairment and validated by diagnostic criteria rather than solely on self-reported questionnaires. We detail the potential of mobile applications (apps) to improve the assessment of smartphone addiction. App-generated indicators could fulfill the unmet need of assessment of smartphone addiction and facilitate future assessment and treatment planning of smartphone addiction.

RESUMO

Estrogen has an important role in regulating glucose homeostasis, and existing evidence indicates that it might be involved in the development of hyperglycemia in pregnancy. It mediates its effect through estrogen receptors including the nuclear receptor ERß encoded by ESR2. The association between the ESR2 polymorphism rs1256031 and GDM susceptibility has not been investigated yet. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between rs1256031 and GDM risk in Chinese population. A total of 241 GDM patients and 139 healthy pregnant women were recruited for this study. The rs1256031 genotype was examined by time-of-flight mass spectrometry and the association between rs1256031 and GDM susceptibility was assessed by binary logistic regression in three different genetic models. The polymorphism rs1256031 was not associated with GDM susceptibility in additive [OR (95% CI) = 0.871 (0.453,1.675); P = 0.680], dominant [OR (95% CI) = 0.908 (0.495,1.665); P = 0.755] or recessive [OR (95% CI) = 0.912 (0.591,1.408); P = 0.677] models after adjusting for confounding factors. We observed no association between the polymorphism rs1256031 in the ESR2 gene and GDM susceptibility in Chinese pregnant women.

RESUMO

Recycling precious elements from the electronic waste could be an environmental friendly way to avoid likely ecological damages caused by leaching of heavy metals and toxic elements as well as an economically attractive option to recover valuable materials that would otherwise be wasted. This research assessed the environmental and economic performance of recovering nine metal elements (aluminum (Al), copper (Cu), gold (Au), lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), silver (Ag), tin (Sn), zinc (Zn), and iron (Fe)) and two non-metal materials (resin and glass-fiber) from the waste printed circuit boards (PCBs), one of the vital components of electronic-waste (e-waste). SimaPro software was used to assess the environmental performance of recycling waste PCBs. Data were collected from recycling plants in Taichung City, Taiwan, and Eco-invent database was also used in the study. The impacts of metal recycling from PCBs were compared with the impacts caused by the mining of respective metals from their natural ores. Among the analyzed elements, only the recovery of Au from waste PCBs proved to have less environmental impacts than the mining from the natural ore. Among 16 environmental impact categories (ILCD midpoint 2011+ method of impact analysis) considered in the present study, cancer and non-cancer human toxicity were the most affected categories followed by minerals, fossils, and resource extraction. However, the economic analysis showed that the recycling of all elements from waste PCBs had a net positive benefit. When considering both the environment and economic performance, the recycling of Au proved to be a beneficial option.

RESUMO

Attention-deficit/Hyperactivity disorder(ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder among children. Traditional assessment methods generally rely on behavioral rating scales (BRS) performed by clinicians, and sometimes parents or teachers. However, BRS assessment is time consuming, and the subjective ratings may lead to bias for the evaluation. Therefore, the major purpose of this study was to develop a Virtual Reality (VR) classroom associated with an intelligent assessment model to assist clinicians for the diagnosis of ADHD. In this study, an immersive VR classroom embedded with sustained and selective attention tasks was developed in which visual, audio, and visual-audio hybrid distractions, were triggered while attention tasks were conducted. A clinical experiment with 37 ADHD and 31 healthy subjects was performed. Data from BRS was compared with VR task performance and analyzed by rank-sum tests and Pearson Correlation. Results showed that 23 features out of total 28 were related to distinguish the ADHD and non-ADHD children. Several features of task performance and neuro-behavioral measurements were also correlated with features of the BRSs. Additionally, the machine learning models incorporating task performance and neuro-behavior were used to classify ADHD and non-ADHD children. The mean accuracy for the repeated cross-validation reached to 83.2%, which demonstrated a great potential for our system to provide more help for clinicians on assessment of ADHD.

RESUMO

Electrochemical advanced oxidation process (EAOP) is known for its efficient and fast degradation of organic pollutants in polluted water treatment. In this study, the EAOP using a boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode was applied to treat two-season groundwater samples collected from four sampling wells (GS1 to GS4) with petrochemical contaminants including methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), benzene, toluene, chlorobenzene, total organic compounds (TOC), and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) at a gas station in southern Taiwan. Moreover, toxicity tests (ATP, p53, and NF-κB bioassays) were performed to evaluate the biological responses of raw and EAOP-treated groundwater. Results show that the concentrations of chlorobenzene before and after EAOP treatment were all below its method detection limit. High degradation efficiencies were observed for MTBE (100%), benzene (100%), toluene (100%, except that of GS2 in the first season), TPH (94-97%, except that of GS4 in the first season), and TOC (85-99%). Cell viability for both the raw groundwater (81.2 ± 13.5%) and EAOP-treated samples (84.7 ± 11.7%) as detected using the ATP bioassay showed no significant difference (p = 0.715). A mean reduction in the DNA damage (739 to 165 ng DOX-equivalency L-1 (ng DOX-EQ. L-1)) and inflammatory response levels (460 to 157 ng TNFα-equivalency L-1 (ng TNFα-EQ. L-1)) were observed for EAOP-treated samples subjected to p53 and NF-κB bioassays. Overall, the significances of the average degradation efficiency, DNA damage, and inflammatory response before and after groundwater with EAOP treatment was observed to be significant (p < 0.05). p53 and NF-κB bioassays might be applied to assess ecotoxic risk in the environment.

RESUMO

Age at onset is one of the most important clinical features of schizophrenia that could indicate greater genetic loadings. Neurological soft signs (NSS) are considered as a potential endophenotype for schizophrenia. However, the association between NSS and different age-onset schizophrenia still remains unclear. We aimed to compare risk model in patients with early-onset schizophrenia (EOS) and adult-onset schizophrenia (AOS) with NSS. This study included 262 schizophrenia patients, 177 unaffected first-degree relatives and 243 healthy controls. We estimated the discriminant abilities of NSS models for early-onset schizophrenia (onset age < 20) and adult-onset schizophrenia (onset age ≥ 20) using three data mining methods: artificial neural networks (ANN), decision trees (DT) and logistic regression (LR). We then assessed the magnitude of NSS performance in EOS and AOS families. For the four NSS subscales, the NSS performance were greater in EOS and AOS families compared with healthy individuals. More interestingly, there were significant differences found between patients' families and control group in the four subscales of NSS. These findings support the potential for neurodevelopmental markers to be used as schizophrenia vulnerability indicators. The NSS models had higher discriminant abilities for EOS than for AOS. NSS were more accurate in distinguishing EOS patients from healthy controls compared to AOS patients. Our results support the neurodevelopmental hypothesis that EOS has poorer performance of NSS than AOS. Hence, poorer NSS performance may be imply trait-related NSS feature in EOS.
