RESUMO

Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae), commonly known as the Asian citrus psyllid, is a prominent citrus tree pest that serves as a vector for Asian huanglongbing (HLB). The substantial costs incurred by the citrus industry as a consequence of this disease have spurred considerable interest in the combined control of D. citri using insecticides and natural enemies. However, the successful implementation of such integrated pest management strategies is dependent on ensuring the compatibility of using natural enemies in the presence of insecticides. In this regard, we evaluated the lethal and sublethal effects of flupyradifurone on Orius strigicollis (Poppius) (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae), an important predatory biological control agent, in which we assessed the risk of exposure to flupyradifurone under both in- and off-field scenario. The median lethal rate (LR50) value of flupyradifurone against O. strigicollis (9.089 g a.i. ha-1), was found to be significantly lower than the maximum field recommended rate (MFRR, 170 g a.i. ha-1). Additionally, at 0.254 g a.i. ha-1, flupyradifurone was established to significantly prolong the developmental duration of O. strigicollis from the first to third instar nymphs. Although we detected no significant difference in the survival of immature O. strigicollis subjected to 0.064 g a.i. ha-1 and control treatments, survival was significantly lower in 0.127 and 0.254 g a.i. ha-1 treatments. Moreover, whereas there were no significant differences in adult longevity between the 0.127 g a.i. ha-1 and control treatments, we recorded a significant reduction in fecundity. Furthermore, there were reductions in peak life expectancy, reproductive value, finite rate of increase, intrinsic rate of increase, and net reproduction rate in response to exposure to increasing flupyradifurone rate. Additionally, at 0.127 g a.i. ha-1, the mean generation time was significantly longer than that under control conditions. Following simulated exposure to flupyradifurone for 100 days, population of O. strigicollis in the 0.064 g a.i. ha-1 and control treatments were found to be significantly larger than those exposed to 0.127 g a.i. ha-1. On the basis on LR50 evaluations, whereas the risk of exposure risk was unacceptable for O. strigicollis under in-field scenario, it remained acceptable off-field. Nonetheless, the sublethal effect of prolonged exposure to residual flupyradifurone could pose an unacceptable off-field risk to O. strigicollis (e.g., in adjacent habitats). Consequently, the effects of different flupyradifurone exposure scenarios on O. strigicollis should be thoroughly assessed, and reducing the dosage of flupyradifurone could be advantageous for the control of D. citri when combine with augmentative release of O. strigicollis.

RESUMO

Continuous monitoring for immunosuppressive status, infection and complications are a must for kidney transplantation (KTx) recipients. Traditional monitoring including blood sampling and kidney biopsy, which caused tremendous medical cost and trauma. Therefore, a cheaper and less invasive approach was urgently needed. We thought that a breath test has the potential to become a feasible tool for KTx monitoring. A prospective-specimen collection, retrospective-blinded assessment strategy was used in this study. Exhaled breath samples from 175 KTx recipients were collected in West China Hospital and tested by online ultraviolet photoionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UVP-TOF-MS). The classification models based on breath test performed well in classifying normal and abnormal values of creatinine, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and tacrolimus, with AUC values of 0.889, 0.850, 0.849 and 0.889, respectively. Regression analysis also demonstrated the predictive ability of breath test for clinical creatinine, eGFR, BUN, tacrolimus level, as the predicted values obtained from the regression model correlated well with the clinical true values (p < 0.05). The findings of this investigation implied that a breath test by using UVP-TOF-MS for KTx recipient monitoring is possible and accurate, which might be useful for future clinical screenings.

RESUMO

In the context of the goal of "carbon neutrality", an economic development model that achieves emission reduction goals and ensures stable economic growth is currently being advocated by China. Based on provincial panel data in China from 2005 to 2016, we analyse the impact of economic growth target (EGT) constraints on environmental pollution using a spatial econometric method. The results indicate that EGT constraints significantly exacerbate environmental pollution in local regions and adjacent areas. Local governments are motivated to achieve economic growth goals at the expense of the ecological environment. The positive effects are attributed to a reduction in environmental regulation (ER), industrial structure upgrading and technological innovation and an increase in foreign direct investment (FDI). Moreover, environmental decentralization (ED) plays a positive regulatory role and can weaken the adverse influences of EGT constraints on environmental pollution. Interestingly, the nonlinear impact of EGT constraints on environmental pollution relies on different types of ED. Environmental administration decentralization (EDA) and environmental supervision decentralization (EDS) can reduce the positive effect of EGT constraints on environmental pollution, while an improvement in environmental monitoring decentralization (EDM) can increase the promoting influences of the constraints of economic growth goals on environmental pollution. The above conclusions still hold under a series of robustness tests. Based on the above findings, we suggest that local governments set scientific growth targets, establish scientific assessment indicators for officials, and optimize the ED management institution.

RESUMO

Equity of urban medical services affects human health and well-being in cities and is important in building 'just' cities. We carried out a quantitative analysis of the spatial accessibility of medical services considering the diverse demands of people of different ages, using outpatient appointment big data and refining the two-step floating catchment area (2SFCA) method. We used the traditional 2SFCA method to evaluate the overall spatial accessibility of medical services of 504 communities in Xiamen city, considering the total population and the supply of medical resources. Approximately half the communities had good access to medical services. The communities with high accessibility were mainly on Xiamen Island, and those with low accessibility were further from the central city. The refined 2SFCA method showed a more diverse and complex spatial distribution of accessibility to medical services. Overall, 209 communities had high accessibility to internal medicine services, 133 to surgery services, 50 to gynecology and obstetrics services, and 18 to pediatric services. The traditional method may over-evaluate or under-evaluate the accessibility of different types of medical services for most communities compared with the refined evaluation method. Our study can provide more precise information on urban medical service spatial accessibility to support just city development and design.

RESUMO

The honeysuckle was widely appreciated as tea beverage owing to the biological activities and the unique aroma and flavor. It is in urgent requirement to explore the migration behavior and dietary exposure as the pesticide residues would bring about potential risks through honeysuckle intake. The optimized QuEChERS procedure coupled with the HPLC-MS/MS and GC-MS/MS methods were employed to determine 93 pesticide residues of seven classifications including carbamates, pyrethroid, triazoles, neonicotinoids, organophosphorus, organochlorine, and others for 93 honeysuckle samples from four primary production bases. As a result, 86.02% of the samples were contaminated by at least one pesticide. Unexpectedly, the banned pesticide of carbofuran was also identified. The migration behavior of metolcarb was the highest, whereas thiabendazole contributed less risk to the infusion with relative lower transfer rate. Both the chronic and acute exposure yielded low risk for human health with five high risk pesticides of dichlorvos, cyhalothrin, carbofuran, ethomyl, and pyridaben. Besides, this study provides foundation of dietary exposure risk assessment for honeysuckle and other likewise products.

RESUMO

Urban green infrastructure has been simulated effectively and economically to reduce volume and pollutants of stormwater runoffs but its spatial effects remain unclear. A snap sampling campaign was carried out for surface water quality in the downtown waterway network of a pilot sponge city (Suzhou) in China, dividing into 7 subwatersheds according to the digital elevation map. In total, 144 sampling points were investigated and measured for chemical quality of surface water while 68 out of the sampling points had a sensory evaluation questionnaire interview for water quality with 321 respondents, in whom the native residents scored a significant spatiality of water quality. The downtown waterway network had phosphorus-limited eutrophic surface water with total nitrogen worse than Class V of the national guidelines. Chemical and sensory evaluation indexes of surface water quality had significant spatial consistency (p < 0.001). All types of green spaces (%) in subwatershed, especially along the urban waterway network (waterfront) and roadside, and in the 100 m riparian buffer zone, significantly influenced nutrient loads in surface water. Findings of the present study suggest that the 100 m riparian buffer zone would be priority areas and the waterfront and roadside should be the highly efficient spots for planning strategy on urban green infrastructure implementation to reduce nutrient loads in surface water and to improve urban landscape aesthetics.

RESUMO

Human activities are closely related to carbon emissions and the mechanism of land-use structure change on carbon emissions is unclear. In this study, 143 counties in the Sichuan Basin of China were used as sample units, and the land use structure of each sample unit in the Sichuan Basin was measured by applying the information entropy theory, analyzing the spatial and temporal evolutionary characteristics and the influencing relationships of land use structure and carbon emissions in the Sichuan Basin, by spatial econometric analysis of panel data on carbon emissions and information entropy of land use structure over five time periods from 2000 to 2018. The results indicate that: the carbon emission intensity and information entropy of land use in the Sichuan basin are increasing over the years, and the cross-sectional data reflect inconsistent spatial distribution characteristics, with greater changes around large cities; both carbon emissions and land use structure are spatially auto-correlated, the information entropy of land use positively affects carbon emission intensity; carbon emissions have positive spillover effects, and changes in land use structure have no obvious regional impact on surrounding areas; there may be potential threshold areas for the impact of land-use structure change on carbon emissions. This study has certain reference value for land use planning and carbon emission reduction policies.

RESUMO

Urban regions are the dominant carbon emitter in China. Although the role of urban regions is a crucial concern in peaking China's carbon emission in 2030 or earlier, there were little focus set to the driving factors among urban regions from spatial differences. To excavate more effective abatement strategies to China's cities, this paper improved the environmental Leontief and Ghosh input-output models and structural decomposition analysis to investigate the driving factors of the spatial differences in the CO2 emissions among four municipalities. The results released that the increasing enlarged spatial differences of CO2 emission were significant. In general, the spatial differences were dramatically influenced by the per capita final demand level from the demand perspective and the sectoral energy intensity from the supply perspective. In particular, the structural factors presented an increasingly critical role. Inspired by the results, the city level "common but distinct" policy implications were formulated.

RESUMO

Four pesticides with a high detection rate in Pu'er tea have been determined by a QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, safe) method with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), and combined ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole linear ion trap-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QTRAP-MS/MS). MWCNs have been compared with other common purification materials, and found to be superior. The matrix effect was systematically studied, and the results show that the MWCNs can quickly and effectively reduce matrix interference values, which were in the range from -17.8 to 13.8. The coefficients (R2) were greater than 0.99, with the limit of quantification ranging from 0.1 to 0.5 µg/kg, and the recovery rate ranging from 74.8% to 105.0%, while the relative standard deviation (RSD) ranged from 3.9% to 6.6%. A total of 300 samples, taken from three areas in which Yunnan Pu'er tea was most commonly produced, tested for four pesticides. The results show that the detection rate of tolfenpyrad in Pu'er tea was 35.7%, which is higher than other pesticides, and the lowest was indoxacarb, with 5.2%. The residual concentrations of chlorpyrifos, triazophos, tolfenpyrad and indoxacarb ranged from 1.10 to 5.28, 0.014 to 0.103, 1.02 to 51.8, and 1.07 to 4.89 mg/kg, respectively. By comparing with China's pesticide residue limits in tea (GB 2763-2021), the over standard rates of chlorpyrifos, tolfenpyrad, and indoxacarb were 4.35%, 0.87% and 0%, respectively. The risk assessment result obtained with the hazard quotient (HQ) method shows that the HQ of the four pesticides was far less than one, indicating that the risk is considered acceptable for the four pesticides in Pu'er tea. The largest HQ was found for tolfenpyrad, 0.0135, and the smallest was found for indoxacarb, 0.000757, but more attention should be paid to tolfenpyrad in daily diets in the future, because its detection rate, and residual and residual median were all relatively high.

RESUMO

The UV/chlorination of three prescription drugs, sulfamethazine (SMZ), gemfibrozil (GEM) and antipyrine (ANT) were studied by the investigation of kinetics, transformation products and combined toxicological assessment. The degradation followed pseudo-first-order kinetics, with half-lives significantly affected by chlorine dosage, without being greatly influenced by pH value and bromide concentration. Based on the Frontier Orbital Theory, the structures of products by hydroxylation or chlorine substitution were proposed and the transformation pathways were introduced, with two, two and one never-before-reported products identified for SMZ, GEM and ANT, respectively. Compared to the results of the experiments with artificial water sample, the degradation kinetics of the three prescription drugs was observed with a prolonged half-lives in both Yangtze River and Taihu Lake water, suggesting that aromatic containing transformation products (TPs) may also exist in UV/chlorine treated natural waters. The results of combined toxicity on E. coli showed that the antagonism effect predominated in most binary and ternary combinations. However, the synergistic toxicity of combinations at low concentrations of prescription drugs subjected to UV/chlorine should be cautioned, which was more close to the natural concentration of prescription drugs in waters.

RESUMO

Equitable access to urban green spaces (UGS) is an important component of social justice and can be quantified using indices such as urban green space accessibility (UGSA). However, the spatiotemporal patterns and inequity of UGSA among cities with different developments during rapid urbanization are unclear, especially lack evidence at a macroscopic national scale during rapid urbanization. Therefore, we evaluated the UGSA in 366 cities of China during 1990-2015 by the Gaussian-based two-step floating catchment area method (Gaussian-based 2SFCA). Then, the inequity pattern of UGSA among cities with different economic developments was analyzed by the concentration curve and concentration index. Finally, the relationship between UGSA and urban spatial expansion was explored quantitatively by the spatial econometric model. The results showed that: (1) The overall UGSA in China declined significantly by nearly 57.23% during 1990-2015. From the regional perspective, the UGSA in the southeastern region was always lower than that in the northwestern region, the Eastern zone presented a downward trend. From the perspective of different sizes cities, the UGSA of the megacities kept decreasing during 1990-2015, while UGSA of the large, medium, and small cities had turned to increase since 2010. (2) During rapid urbanization, the equity of UGSA among the cities gradually improved, while the cities with low economic developments tended to have higher UGSA. (3) Urban spatial expansion led to the decrease of UGSA during 1990-2015, while the impact had spatiotemporal heterogeneity, and UGSA had a positive spatial spillover effect. Our research provides a comparative baseline for the improvement of UGSA from a macroscopic perspective for China's urbanization policy in the future and novel insights into the green justice issue. The results can be compared with the development of UGS in other countries at different urbanization stages to promote UGS design and policy.

RESUMO

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ON THIS TOPIC?: The morbidity and mortality of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with adverse weather and air pollution. However, COPD patients are not able to be alerted in advance of high risk environments. WHAT IS ADDED BY THIS REPORT?: This prospective controlled trial conducted in Pudong New Area of Shanghai from October 2019 to April 2020 provided evidence of COPD risk forecasting service on the reductions in visits and costs of COPD patients in outpatient and emergency departments in China for the first time. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PUBLIC HEALTH PRACTICE?: This study suggests that COPD risk forecasting service could be integrated into existing COPD management in public health to improve the health and economic outcomes.

RESUMO

The Wanshan mercury mine, which is an abandoned mine located in northeastern Guizhou Province in Southwest China, has introduced serious Hg pollution to the local ecosystem resulting from previous mining and smelting activities. However, it is not clear to date whether soil pollution has actually improved after treatment by related departments. Therefore, the present study investigates the vegetation community and heavy metal contents of the soil and plants in the Wanshan mercury mining area. The results showed that most of Hg, Cd, As, Cu, and Zn contents in soil samples were higher than those of Soil Environment Quality Risk Control Standard for Soil Contamination of Agricultural Land in China (GB15618-2018). The observed plant species mainly consisted of Compositae, followed by Leguminosae. Unfortunately, this investigation found that heavy metal concentrations in these plants were not extremely high and far below the standard of hyperaccumulator. Despite all this, the maximum values of bioaccumulation factor for Pb, Cd, Hg, As, Cu and Zn were Serissa japonica (Thunb.) Thunb., Rhus chinensis Mill., Potentilla sibbaldii Haller f., Erigeron canadensis L., Clerodendrum bungei var. bungei. and Rhus chinensis Mill., respectively. Regardless of the carcinogenic or noncarcinogenic risk index, the potential risk to urban children is higher. Our results suggest that heavy metal pollution was indeed relieved since their contents in soil significantly decreased in comparison with those reported in other previous studies. This finding provides a reference for the long-term treatment of heavy metal pollution in the local environment and other areas employing analogous environmental protection measures.

RESUMO

Increasing heavy metal pollution in wetland ecosystems around the world pose significant health risks to waterbirds, especially the endangered species. We analyzed heavy metal pollution in bird foraging area of Caohai wetland in Guizhou Plateau (China), and used an integrated exposure risk model for assessing heavy metal (Cd, Pb, Cr, Ni, Zn, Sb) exposure risk in birds from the soil, water, plants and benthic invertebrates. There is considerable variation in the extent of heavy metal contamination across the different sampling sites, and Cd and Sb are the main contaminants. The mussel Anodonta showed greater heavy metal accumulation (except for Zn) compared to the snail species C. cathayensis. The different plant species also varied in terms of amount for accumulated heavy metals. The phytophagous together with omnivorous birds were exposed to Cd, Pb, Zn and Ni through plants rather than the soil, whereas the maximum Zn exposure in the omnivorous and carnivorous birds was through consumption of benthic invertebrates. Furthermore, the phytophagous black-necked cranes (Grus nigricollis) were less risk to heavy metal exposure compared to the omnivorous bar-headed goose (Anser indicus) and carnivorous ruddy shelducks (Tadorna ferruginea). The exposure risk of Cr (8.1) was highest, followed by Pb (5.1), Zn (3.8), Sb (1.0), Cd (0.33) and Ni (0.28). The heavy metal assessment heavy metal exposure risk for migratory birds should take into account the exposure from food and soil. Our findings provide new insights into developing measures to minimize heavy metal contamination in migratory birds.

RESUMO

In urban environments, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) signals are frequently attenuated, blocked or reflected, which degrades the positioning accuracy of GNSS receivers significantly. To improve the performance of GNSS receiver for vehicle urban navigation, a GNSS/INS deeply-coupled software defined receiver (GIDCSR) with a low cost micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) inertial measurement unit (IMU) ICM-20602 is presented, in which both GPS and BDS constellations are supported. Two key technologies, that is, adaptive open-close tracking loops and INS aided pseudo-range weight control algorithm, are applied in the GIDCSR to enhance the signal tracking continuity and positioning accuracy in urban areas. To assess the performance of the proposed deep couple solution, vehicle field tests were carried out in GNSS-challenged urban environments. With the adaptive open-close tracking loops, the deep couple output carrier phase in the open sky, and improved pseudo-range accuracy before and after GNSS signal blocked. Applying the INS aided pseudo-range weight control, the pseudo-range gross errors of the deep couple decreased caused by multipath. A popular GNSS/INS tightly-coupled vehicle navigation kit from u-blox company, M8U, was tested side by side as benchmark. The test results indicate that in the GNSS-challenged urban areas, the pseudo-range quality of GIDCSR is at least 25% better than that of M8U, and GIDCSR's horizontal positioning results are at least 69% more accurate than M8U's.

RESUMO

Deep learning approaches, especially convolutional neural network (CNN) models, have achieved excellent performances in vibrational spectral analysis. The critical drawback of the CNN approach is the lack of interpretation, and it is regarded as a black box. Interpreting the learning mechanism of chemometric models is critical for intuitive understanding and further application. In this study, an interpretable CNN model with a global average pooling layer is presented for Raman and mid-infrared spectral data analysis. A class activation mapping (CAM)-based approach is leveraged to visualize the active variables in the whole spectrum. The visualization of active variables shows a discriminative pattern in which the most contributed variables peaked around theoretical chemical characteristic bands. The visualization of the feature maps by three convolutional layers demonstrates the data transformation pipeline and how the CNN model hierarchically extracts informative spectral features. The first layer acts as a Savitzky-Golay filter and learns spectral shape characteristics, while the second layer learns enhanced patterns from typical spectral peaks on a few correlated variables. The third layer shows stable activations on critical spectral peaks. A partial least squares - linear discriminant analysis (PLS-LDA) model is presented for comparison on classification accuracy and model interpretation. The CNN model yields mean classification accuracies of 99.01 and 100% for E. coli and meat datasets on the test set, while the PLS-LDA models obtain accuracies of 98.83 and 100%. Both the CNN and PLS-LDA models demonstrate stable patterns on active variables while CNN models are more stable than PLS-LDA models on classification performances for various dataset partitions with Monte-Carlo cross-validation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Myasthenia gravis is a rare autoimmune neuromuscular disorder. The disorder requires long-term use of expensive medication to control clinical symptoms. This study analyzed the change in trends of total medical expenses and out-of-pocket expenses for patients with myasthenia gravis and explored the factors influencing them. METHODS: In this retrospective study, data were derived from a survey of medical service utilization for patients insured by the Urban Basic Medical Insurance in China from 2013 to 2015. The cost data of 3347 patients with myasthenia gravis were included in this study. The baseline characteristics and medical expenses for patients with myasthenia gravis were analyzed using a descriptive method. The difference and influencing factors of the out-of-pocket ratio were analyzed from both outpatient and inpatient expenses by using the quantile regression method. RESULTS: The total expenses reimbursed by the Urban Basic Medicine Insurance for all patients with myasthenia gravis fell progressively from 73.1 to 58.7% during the study period. Patients' out-of-pocket expenses increased gradually, of which expenses within the scope of Basic Medicine Insurance increased from 14.7 to 22.6% and expenses outside of the Basic Medicine Insurance scope increased from 12.6 to 18.7%. Moreover, the panel quantile results showed a positive correlation between the year of receiving treatment and the out-of-pocket ratio. In addition to the 25th quantile of the out-of-pocket ratio among outpatients with myasthenia gravis, there were significant differences in medical insurance and medical institution among all the other quantiles. Significant regional differences were found in all quantiles of the out-of-pocket ratio, except for the 75th quantile among inpatients. Lastly, age had a negative effect on inpatients with myasthenia gravis across all quantiles, but not on outpatients. CONCLUSIONS: From 2013 to 2015, patients with myasthenia gravis's out-of-pocket expenses increased progressively. Moreover, the individual out-of-pocket ratio was affected by the year, medical insurance, medical institution, region, and age. The current medical insurance policy for the general public has a low ability to cater for patients with myasthenia gravis.

RESUMO

A highly efficient and stereoselective synthesis of enantioenriched imidazolidines by rhodium-catalyzed intermolecular [3 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of chiral vinyl aziridines and oxime ethers has been successfully developed. Notably, both aldoximes and ketoximes are suitable substrates to afford the corresponding chiral imidazolidines in high yields with good stereoselectivity. This transformation represents an unprecedented example that utilizes ketimine derivatives as an aza-[2C]-component in cycloadditions of vinyl aziridines.

RESUMO

Carbon nanomaterials exhibit extraordinary mechanical and electronic properties desirable for future technologies. Beyond the popular sp2 -scaffolds, there is growing interest in their graphdiyne-related counterparts incorporating both sp2 and sp bonding in a regular scheme. Herein, we introduce carbonitrile-functionalized graphdiyne nanowires, as a novel conjugated, one-dimensional (1D) carbon nanomaterial systematically combining the virtues of covalent coupling and supramolecular concepts that are fabricated by on-surface synthesis. Specifically, a terphenylene backbone is extended with reactive terminal alkyne and polar carbonitrile (CN) moieties providing the required functionalities. It is demonstrated that the CN functionalization enables highly selective alkyne homocoupling forming polymer strands and gives rise to mutual lateral attraction entailing room-temperature stable double-stranded assemblies. By exploiting the templating effect of the vicinal Ag(455) surface, 40 nm long semiconducting nanowires are obtained and the first experimental assessment of their electronic band structure is achieved by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy indicating an effective mass below 0.1m0 for the top of the highest occupied band. Via molecular manipulation it is showcased that the novel oligomer exhibits extreme mechanical flexibility and opens unexplored ways of information encoding in clearly distinguishable CN-phenyl trans-cis species. Thus, conformational data storage with density of 0.36 bit nm-2 and temperature stability beyond 150 K comes in reach.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: China has the biggest population in the world, and has been experiencing the largest migration in history, and its rapid urbanization has profound and lasting impacts on local and national public health. Under these conditions, a systems understanding on the correlation among urbanization, environmental change and public health and to devise solutions at national, local and individual levels are in urgent need. METHODS: In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review of recent studies which have examined the relationship between urbanization, urban environmental changes and human health in China. Based on the review, coupled with a systems understanding, we summarize the challenges and opportunities for promoting the health and wellbeing of the whole nation at national, local, and individual levels. RESULTS: Urbanization and urban expansion result in urban environmental changes, as well as residents' lifestyle change, which can lead independently and synergistically to human health problems. China has undergone an epidemiological transition, shifting from infectious to chronic diseases in a much shorter time frame than many other countries. Environmental risk factors, particularly air and water pollution, are a major contributing source of morbidity and mortality in China. Furthermore, aging population, food support system, and disparity of public service between the migrant worker and local residents are important contributions to China's urban health. CONCLUSIONS: At the national level, the central government could improve current environmental policies, food safety laws, and make adjustments to the health care system and to demographic policy. At the local level, local government could incorporate healthy life considerations in urban planning procedures, make improvements to the local food supply, and enforce environmental monitoring and management. At the individual level, urban residents can be exposed to education regarding health behaviour choices while being encouraged to take responsibility for their health and to participate in environmental monitoring and management.
