RESUMO

Smart contact lenses (SCLs) have been considered as novel wearable devices for out-of-hospital and self-monitoring applications. They are capable of non-invasively and continuously monitoring physiological signals in the eyes, including vital biophysical (e.g., intraocular of pressure, temperature, and electrophysiological signal) and biochemical signals (e.g., pH, glucose, protein, nitrite, lactic acid, and ions). Recent progress mainly focuses on the rational design of wearable SCLs for physiological signal monitoring, while also facilitating the treatment of various ocular diseases. It covers contact lens materials, fabrication technologies, and integration methods. We also highlight and discuss a critical comparison of SCLs with electrical, microfluidic, and optical signal outputs in health monitoring. Their advantages and disadvantages could help researchers to make decisions when developing SCLs with desired properties for physiological signal monitoring. These unique capabilities make SCLs promising diagnostic and therapeutic tools. Despite the extensive research in SCLs, new technologies are still in their early stages of development and there are a few challenges to be addressed before these SCLs technologies can be successfully commercialized particularly in the form of rigorous clinical trials.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of the S1 vertebral bone quality (VBQ) score in assessing bone quality among patients with vertebral fragility fractures (VFF). Additionally, whether the combination of S1 VBQ and Hounsfield unit (HU) values improves the predictive accuracy of VFF. METHODS: Using lumbar noncontrast computed tomography and T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging, we measured L1 HU values, S1 VBQ, and L1-L4 VBQ. To assess their predictive performance for VFF, we constructed receiver operating characteristic curves. We also compared the diagnostic efficacy of HU values with that of S1 VBQ and L1--L4 VBQ values for the joint diagnosis of VFF. The Delong test was used to compare the value of individual or combined predictions of VFF. RESULTS: In comparison to the nonfracture group, all patients exhibited markedly elevated S1 VBQ and L1--L4 VBQ and notably reduced HU values (P < 0.001). Multivariate analysis revealed that elevated S1 VBQ, increased L1--L4 VBQ, and decreased HU values independently correlated with VFF development. The areas under the curve for VFF prediction were 0.806 for S1 VBQ, 0.799 for L1--L4 VBQ, and 0.820 for HU values. According to the Delong test, the combination of HU values with S1 VBQ/L1--L4 VBQ significantly improved the diagnostic accuracy. CONCLUSIONS: The simplified S1 VBQ is a valuable tool for predicting the occurrence of VFF and can be used as an alternative to the L1--L4 VBQ. In addition, the combination of S1 VBQ and HU values can significantly improve the predictive value of VFF.

Liver cancer, a chronic non-communicable disease, represents a serious public health problem. Long-term trends in the burden of liver cancer disease are heterogeneous across regions. Incidence and mortality of liver cancer, based on the Global Burden of Disease, were collected from the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention. Age-period-cohort model was utilized to reveal the secular trends and estimate the age, period and cohort effects on primary liver cancer due to specific etiologies. Both the age-standardized incidence and mortality rate of liver cancer in Hubei province were on the rise, although there were discrepancies between gender groups. From age-period-cohort analysis, both incidence and mortality of liver cancer due to Hepatitis B virus were the highest in all age groups. The incidence of all liver cancer groups increased with time period in males, while this upward trend was observed in females only in liver cancer due to alcohol use group. Cohort effects indicated the disease burden of liver cancer decreased with birth cohorts. Local drifts showed that the incidence of liver cancer due to specific etiologies was increasing in the age group of males between 40 and 75 years old. The impact of an aging population will continue in Hubei Province. the disease burden of liver cancer will continue to increase, and personalized prevention policies must be adopted to address these changes.

Objective: This research dealt with investigating and measuring the contribution of the factors that impact depression in older adults living alone vs. those living with others (hereafter referred to as "not alone") in China. Design: This investigation adopts a cross-sectional research design. The dataset employed for this study comprises data from 2018 the Chinese Longitudinal Health Longevity Survey (CLHLS). Setting: The research involved data sourced from China, specifically from 23 of its provinces. From the 8th CLHLS, 12,197 older adults were selected who met the study requirements. Measures: Binary logistic regression models were established to delve into the primary factors impacting the depressive symptoms of the individuals. Furthermore, Fairlie models were employed to assess these factors between older adults living alone and those not living alone. This approach facilitated an in-depth analysis of their respective contributions. Results: It was observed that the demographic of Chinese older adults exhibited depressive symptoms at a rate of 11.92%. Older adults who resided alone (15.76%) exhibited a higher prevalence of depressive symptoms in comparison to their counterparts living in not-alone settings (11.15%). Employing Fairlie decomposition analysis, it was determined that this observed disparity in depressive symptoms, amounting to 55.33% of the overall difference, could be primarily attributed to distinct factors. This encompassed variance in marital status (20.55%), years of school (4.63%), self-reported local income status (7.25%), self-reported sleep status (17.56%), and self-reported health status (4.24%). Conclusion: The resulting data indicated that depressive symptoms exhibited an elevated prevalence in older adults living alone than in those living not alone. This discrepancy was predominantly attributed to variance in socioeconomic marital status, years of school, self-reported local income status, self-reported sleep status, and self-reported health status by living alone vs. not alone. Mitigating these influential factors could help develop targeted and meticulous intervention strategies, precisely tailored to improve the mental well-being of older adults at high risk.

PURPOSE: Mitral regurgitation (MR) is a highly prevalent and deadly cardiac disease characterized by improper mitral valve (MV) leaflet coaptation. Among the plethora of available treatment strategies, the MitraClip is an especially safe option, but optimizing its long-term efficacy remains an urgent challenge. METHODS: We applied our noninvasive image-based strain computation pipeline [1] to intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography datasets taken from ten patients undergoing MitraClip repair, spanning a range of MR etiologies and MitraClip configurations. We then analyzed MV leaflet strains before and after MitraClip implementation to develop a better understanding of (1) the pre-operative state of human regurgitant MV, and (2) the MitraClip's impact on the MV leaflet deformations. RESULTS: The MV pre-operative strain fields were highly variable, underscoring both the heterogeneity of the MR in the patient population and the need for patient-specific treatment approaches. Similarly, there were no consistent overall post-operative strain patterns, although the average A2 segment radial strain difference between pre- and post-operative states was consistently positive. In contrast, the post-operative strain fields were better correlated to their respective pre-operative strain fields than to the inter-patient post-operative strain fields. This quantitative result implies that the patient specific pre-operative state of the MV guides its post-operative deformation, which suggests that the post-operative state can be predicted using pre-operative data-derived modelling alone. CONCLUSIONS: The pre-operative MV leaflet strain patterns varied considerably across the range of MR disease states and after MitraClip repair. Despite large inter-patient heterogeneity, the post-operative deformation appears principally dictated by the pre-operative deformation state. This novel finding suggests that though the variation in MR functional state and MitraClip-induced deformation were substantial, the post-operative state can be predicted from the pre-operative data alone. This study suggests that, with use of larger patient cohort and corresponding long-term outcomes, quantitative predictive factors of MitraClip durability can be identified.

Background: Three-dimensional (3D) imaging is a powerful tool for the analysis of soft tissue morphology. 3D photogrammetry outperforms conventional photogrammetric methods and gains popularity among plastic surgeons. However, commercial 3D imaging systems bundled with analytical software are costly. This study intends to introduce and validate an automatic, low-cost, and user-friendly 3D facial scanner. Methods: An automatic and low-cost 3D facial scanning system was developed. The system consisted of a 3D facial scanner running automatically on a sliding track and a 3D data processing tool. Fifteen human subjects underwent 3D facial imaging by the novel scanner. Eighteen anthropometric parameters were measured on the 3D virtual models and compared with caliper measurements (the gold standard). Further, the novel 3D scanner was compared to the commonly used commercial 3D facial scanner Vectra H1. Heat map analysis was used to evaluate the deviation between the 3D models obtained by the two imaging systems. Results: The 3D photogrammetric results were highly correlated with the direct measurement results (P<0.001). The mean absolute differences (MADs) were less than 2 mm. Bland-Altman analysis indicated that, for 17 of the 18 parameters, the largest differences within the 95% limits of agreement margin were within the 2.0 mm clinical acceptance. Heat map analysis showed the average distance between the 3D virtual models was 0.15 mm, with a root mean square of 0.71 mm. Conclusions: The novel 3D facial scanning system is proven to be highly reliable. It provides a good alternative to commercial 3D facial scanners.

This was an initial effort to treat hemophiliac hematoma by ultrasound-guided intratumoral drainage and lavage with urokinase after adequate supplementation of coagulation factors. Two patients with severe hemophilia underwent ultrasound-guided percutaneous drainage in combination with lavage using urokinase. After 5-day and 3-day treatments, respectively, intramuscular hematomas in both patients disappeared, compression symptom was relieved, and no obvious adverse reactions or serious complications were observed during the treatment or follow-up. These findings suggest that ultrasound-guided drainage combined with lavage using urokinase is an immediate, safe, effective, and minimally invasive treatment for intramuscular hematomas in hemophiliacs, avoiding potential complications by surgical resection with relatively low treatment cost.

BACKGROUNDCurrently, no laboratory tests exist to stratify for the risk of developing sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS), an early endothelial complication after hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). Risk biomarkers of SOS have not been verified in a prospective cohort accounting for differences between practices across institutions. Herein, we aimed to define risk groups for SOS occurrence using 3 proteins: L-ficolin, hyaluronic acid (HA), and stimulation 2 (ST2). METHODSBetween 2017 and 2021, we prospectively accrued 80 pediatric patients across 4 US centers. Biomarkers were tested by ELISA blind to patient groupings and associated with SOS incidence on day 35 after HCT, and overall survival (OS) on day 100 after HCT. Cutpoints were identified using retrospective cohorts and applied to the prospective cohort.RESULTSCombination of the 3 biomarkers measured on day 3 after HCT in the prospective cohort provided 80% (95% CI 55%-100%) sensitivity and 73% (95% CI 62%-83%) specificity for risk of SOS occurrence. Patients with low L-ficolin were 9 times (95% CI 3-32) more likely to develop SOS, while patients with high HA and ST2 were 6.5 (95% CI 1.9-22.0) and 5.5 (95% CI 2.3-13.1) times more likely to develop SOS. These 3 markers also predicted worse day 100 OS - L-ficolin: HR, 10.0 (95% CI 2.2-45.1), P = 0.0002; HA: HR, 4.1 (95% CI 1.0-16.4), P = 0.031; and ST2: HR, 3.9 (95% CI 0.9-16.4), P = 0.04.CONCLUSIONL-ficolin, HA, and ST2 levels measured as early as 3 days after HCT improved risk stratification for SOS occurrence and OS and may guide risk-adapted preemptive therapy.TRIAL REGISTRATIONClinicalTrials.gov NCT03132337.FUNDINGNIH.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is one of the most common psychiatric disorders for women after delivery. The establishment of an effective PPD prediction model helps to distinguish high-risk groups, and verifying whether such high-risk groups can benefit from drug intervention is very important for clinical guidance. METHODS: We collected data of parturients that underwent a cesarean delivery. The Control group was divided into a training cohort and a testing cohort. Six different ML models were constructed and we compared their prediction performance in the testing cohort. For model interpretation, we introduced SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP). Then, training cohort, ketamine group and dexmedetomidine (DEX) group were classified as high or low risk for PPD by the model. A 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM) was performed to compare the incidence of PPD between two groups in different risk cohorts. RESULTS: Extreme gradient enhancement (XGB) had the best recognition effect, with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of 0.789 (95 % CI 0.742-0.836) in the training cohort and 0.744 (95 % CI 0.655-0.823) in the testing cohort, respectively. A threshold of 21.5 % PPD risk probability was determined. After PSM, the results showed that the incidence of PPD in the two intervention groups was significantly different from the control group in the high-risk cohort (P < 0.001) but not in the low-risk cohort (P > 0.001). CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrated that the XGB algorithm provided a more accurate in prediction of PPD risk, and it was beneficial to receive early intervention for the high-risk groups distinguished by the model.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chest keloids undergoing surgery and adjuvant radiotherapy still have a high recurrence rate, which is a critical problem. The level of keloid activity has not been studied, and a nomogram model for predicting keloid recurrence has not been established in previous studies. METHODS: A total of 145 patients with chest keloids who underwent surgery and radiotherapy between January 2015 and January 2019 at Peking Union Medical College Hospital were included in our study. Demographic and clinical features and the score of KAAS were analyzed. We compared the area under the curve (AUC) and decision curve analysis (DCA) between KAAS and the Vancouver scar scale (VSS) and established a nomogram model for predicting the risk of recurrence. We used bootstrap and calibration plots to evaluate the performance of the nomogram. RESULTS: The KAAS can predict recurrence in patients with chest keloids after surgery and radiotherapy. Areas under the curve (AUCs) of KAAS and VSS were 0.858 and 0.711, respectively (p < 0.001). Decision curve analysis (DCA) demonstrated that the KAAS was better than the VSS. Complications after treatment may be risk factors for keloid recurrence. We created a nomogram by using complications and KAAS. The AUC was 0.871 (95% CI 0.812-0.930). The ROC of the model's bootstrap was 0.865 and was well calibrated. CONCLUSIONS: The KAAS can be used to predict the recurrence and we developed a nomogram for predicting the recurrence of chest keloids after surgery and adjuvant radiotherapy. Cross-shareholding has played an important role in strengthening strategic synergy among enterprises, but its impact on the green development of enterprises is unclear. In this paper, we construct an analytical framework that includes a manufacturer and a retailer to explore the impact of cross-shareholdings under different leaderships on green supply chain operational decisions and profits, in which the manufacturer invests in green technologies and the retailer conducts green marketing. By constructing and solving the game model of manufacturer-led and retailer-led before and after cross-shareholding, it is found that after cross-shareholding, the product's green level and the retailers' marketing level are improved. For supply chain leaders, cross-shareholdings always increase their profits. Only when the follower holds the leader's shares no more than a certain value, cross-shareholding will increase the total profit of the supply chain. In addition, we obtain the optimal decisions and profits of the supply chain in the integrated situation and design two-part pricing contracts to achieve cross-shareholding supply chain coordination. The results of this paper can provide theoretical guidance and decision support for enterprises interested in using cross-shareholding to improve supply chain performance.

In China, utilization and evaluation of territorial space have become national strategic issues. Evaluating the rationality of urban, ecological, and agricultural space is significant in the development of territorial space and provides a theoretical basis for the optimization of provincial territorial space. The strategic positioning of Gansu Province as a national ecological environment safety barrier is significant to the protection of the ecological environment of northwest China. This study used the entropy method to evaluate the rationality of territorial space development in 14 cities in Gansu Province in 2019, using 50 indicators of urban, ecological, and agricultural space. Results reveal that in the evaluation of these three spaces, the most important influencing indicators are water supply penetration rate, proportion of desert area, and proportion of agricultural population, respectively. In the total evaluation of territorial space rationality, the city with the highest comprehensive index is Qingyang (2.0521), followed by Zhangye (1.5635), while Lanzhou (1.1553) has the lowest evaluation. In Gansu, cities with the best territorial spatial conditions are concentrated in the east, whereas those with poor territorial spatial environmental security are located in central Gansu and the Hexi Corridor. Collectively, these findings suggest that the equity and rationality of urban, ecological, and agricultural space in territorial space should be considered in territorial space planning strategies. The balance and harmony of these three spaces play a positive role in the sustainable development of the economy, society, and the environment in urban areas.

Objectives: Long-term outcomes of mitral valve repair procedures to correct ischemic mitral regurgitation remain unpredictable, due to an incomplete understanding of the disease process and the inability to reliably quantify the coaptation zone using echocardiography. Our objective was to quantify patient-specific mitral valve coaptation behavior from clinical echocardiographic images obtained before and after repair to assess coaptation restoration and its relationship with long-term repair durability. Methods: To circumvent the limitations of clinical imaging, we applied a simulation-based shape-matching technique that allowed high-fidelity reconstructions of the complete mitral valve in the systolic configuration. We then applied this method to an extant database of human regurgitant mitral valves before and after undersized ring annuloplasty to quantify the effect of the repair on mitral valve coaptation geometry. Results: Our method was able to successfully resolve the coaptation zone into distinct contacting and redundant regions. Results indicated that in patients whose regurgitation recurred 6 months postrepair, both the contacting and redundant regions were larger immediately postrepair compared with patients with no recurrence (P < .05), even when normalized to account for generally larger recurrent valves. Conclusions: Although increasing leaflet coaptation area is an intuitively obvious way to improve long-term repair durability, this study has implied that this may not be a reliable target for mitral valve repair. This study underscores the importance of a rigorous understanding of the consequences of repair techniques on mitral valve behavior, as well as a patient-specific approach to ischemic mitral regurgitation treatment within the context of mitral valve and left ventricle function.

Background and Objective: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer worldwide, and the incidence and mortality rates continue to increase annually. Many factors, including genetic, immune, and environmental factors, influence the occurrence and development of CRC. Along with the economic development, changes in lifestyle, especially dietary factors, have been shown to greatly affect the progression of CRC. Increasing evidence showed that dietary patterns influence the risk of CRC and affect CRC treatment. The present review describes the role of diet in the prevention and treatment of CRC with the hope that doctors attach importance to dietary patterns in educating patients with CRC or at risk of CRC and that diet may be regarded as an auxiliary treatment strategy to improve patients' outcomes. Methods: English language articles published from 2000 to December 2021 in PubMed and Embase were identified by searching titles for keywords including "diet", "colorectal cancer", "dietary pattern", and "dietary factor"; 101 articles were selected for review. Key Content and Findings: The present review describes the role of different dietary patterns and factors in the prevention and treatment of CRC. We found that dietary intervention is closely related to the occurrence, development, and prognosis of CRC. Adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD), the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet, fasting, vegetarian diets and the ketogenic diet (KD) were found to reduce the risk of CRC, prolong patient survival, and delay disease progression. Moderate intake of dietary fiber (DF), omega-3 fatty acids, micronutrients (e.g., calcium, iron, and selenium), and vitamins have been shown to be beneficial in the prevention and treatment of CRC. Conversely, diets high in fat or sugar and those rich in red meat or processed meat promote CRC. Conclusions: People at high risk of CRC and those with CRC are recommended to eat a plant-based diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains with appropriate DF intake and to avoid high levels of processed meat, red meat, and highly refined grains.

One major challenge is to convert physiological signals to easily readable signals in a convenient way. One possibility for wearable epidermal sensors is based on visible readouts. There are a range of materials whose optical properties can be tuned by parameters such as temperature, pH, light, and electric fields. Herein, this review covers and highlights a set of materials with tunable optical properties and their integration into wearable epidermal sensors for health monitoring. Specifically, the recent progress, fabrication, and applications of these materials for wearable epidermal sensors are summarized and discussed. Finally, the challenges and perspectives for the next generation wearable devices are proposed.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) derived from the incomplete combustion of organic materials are associated with adverse health effects. However, little is known about PAH exposure levels and their influencing factors on a large scale in developing countries. In this study, urinary monohydroxylated metabolites of PAHs (OH-PAHs), including the metabolites of naphthalene, fluorene, phenanthrene, pyrene, chrysene, and benzo[a]pyrene, were measured in 1154 samples in the general population nationwide from 26 provincial capitals in China. Concentrations of OH-PAHs ranged from 1.39 to 228 µg/L. OH-Nap, metabolite of naphthalene, was the predominant compound, accounting for 65.1% of totals. People in eastern, southwest and northeast China, such as Shanghai, Kunming, Nanning, and Changchun, suffered more PAH exposure than other regions which might associate with sampling time, living habits of the subjects, and the imbalance of economic development and energy consumption across regions. Urinary OH-PAH concentrations were associated with body mass index, gender, and age, and smoking was the main correlating factor. Inhalation and diet might be the main exposure route of human exposure to PAHs, especially for smokers by inhalation. Hazard indices showed that no subject was exposed to PAHs with potential non-carcinogenic risk. Furthermore, the carcinogenic risk was the most significant health effects, with almost all subjects having carcinogenic risk values higher than the acceptable level of 10-6. Naphthalene and phenanthrene were the main contributors. The results also suggested a possible relationship between PAH exposure and lung cancer in the Chinese population. This first nationwide study on human internal exposure to PAHs provides a large body of scientific information for governmental decision-making about associated human health and the prevention of human exposure to PAHs.

BACKGROUND: Differentiating benign from malignant renal tumors is important for selection of the most effective treatment. PURPOSE: To develop magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based deep learning (DL) models for differentiation of benign and malignant renal tumors and to compare their discrimination performance with the performance of radiomics models and assessment by radiologists. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective. POPULATION: A total of 217 patients were randomly assigned to a training cohort (N = 173) or a testing cohort (N = 44). FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and fast spin-echo sequence T2-weighted imaging (T2WI) at 3.0T. ASSESSMENT: A radiologist manually labeled the region of interest (ROI) on each image. Three DL models using ResNet-18 architecture and three radiomics models using random forest were developed using T2WI alone, DWI alone, and a combination of the two image sets to discriminate between benign and malignant renal tumors. The diagnostic performance of two radiologists was assessed based on professional experience. We also compared the performance of each model and the radiologists. STATISTICAL TESTS: The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) was used to assess the performance of each model and the radiologists. P < 0.05 indicated statistical significance. RESULTS: The AUC of the DL models based on T2WI, DWI, and the combination was 0.906, 0.846, and 0.925 in the testing cohorts, respectively. The AUC of the combination DL model was significantly better than that of the models based on individual sequences (0.925 > 0.906, 0.925 > 0.846). The AUC of the radiomics models based on T2WI, DWI, and the combination was 0.824, 0.742, and 0.826 in the testing cohorts, respectively. The AUC of two radiologists was 0.724 and 0.667 in the testing cohorts. CONCLUSION: Thus, the MRI-based DL model is useful for differentiating benign from malignant renal tumors in clinic, and the DL model based on T2WI + DWI had the best performance. OBJECTIVE: To assess the role of region of interest (ROI) selection of intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) for predicting lymph node metastases (LNM) and tumor response after chemoradiation therapy (CRT) in locally advanced rectal cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-nine patients with biopsy-proven rectal adenocarcinoma who underwent pre- and post-CRT MRI and surgery were prospectively enrolled. The exclusion criteria included nonresectable and/or metastatic disease and loss of follow-up. Pathological stage was determined using ypTNM stage and tumor regression grade. Slow diffusion coefficient (D), fast diffusion coefficient (D*), perfusion-related diffusion fraction (f), apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and their percentage changes (Δ%) were evaluated by two readers using whole-volume, single-slice and small samples ROI methods. Risk factors including carcinoembryonic antigen, post-CRT T-staging, extramural venous invasion and IVIM parameters were evaluated through multivariate analyses. Areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUCs) were calculated to evaluate diagnostic performance. Duration of follow-up was two-year. Recurrence-free survival of patients with LNM and tumor response was estimated using Kaplan-Meier analysis. RESULTS: Interobserver agreement were good for pre- and post-CRT three ROI methods (intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC], 0.581-0.953). Whole-volume ROI-derived Δ%D was an independent risk factor for LNM, non-pathological complete response (non-pCR) and poor response (odds ratio, 0.940, 0.952, 0.805, respectively; all p < 0.001). Whole-volume ROI-derived Δ%D showed best AUC of 0.810, 0.851 and 0.903 for LNM, non-pCR and poor response (cutoff value, 31.8%, 54.5%, 52.8%, respectively). Patients with post-CRT LNM showed reduction in 2-year recurrence-free survival (hazard ratio, 3.253). CONCLUSIONS: Whole-volume ROI-derived Δ%D provided high diagnostic performance for evaluating post-CRT LNM and tumor response. Patients with post-CRT LNM showed earlier recurrence.

The objectives of this study were to analyze the distribution characteristics of frailty phenotypes in older adults of Chinese nursing homes, and to compare some motor function characteristics of older adults in nursing homes between frailty and non-frailty, to determine which motor function and frailty are related. This cross-sectional study included 177 older adults living in nursing homes. Frailty was diagnosed by Fried's phenotype, and motor function assessment characteristics (including muscle tone, ROM, and balance) were also evaluated. Chi-square and logistic regression analyses were performed. Frailty prevalence was 53% in nursing homes in big Chinese cities (average age 82.0 ±â€…6.1). Low levels of physical activity (90.4% in frail elder), decreased handgrip strength (98.9% in frail elder) and slowed walking speed (100% in frail elder) were the 3 main components of the frailty phenotype of frail adults in nursing homes in China. It is worth noting that 74.7% of the non-frail elders also had reduced handgrip strength. Further analysis showed that balance (P < .001), muscle tone (upper, P = .028, lower, P = .001) and the range of motion (P < .001) were associated with frailty in older adults. The frailty of the elders in Chinese nursing homes was characterized by the decline of motor function. And surprisingly, both frail and non-frail elders were found to have poor strength. Frail nursing home seniors also have body muscle tone, range of motion and balance problems. The elderly of China should focus on strength, stretch and balance training to improve motor function, especially strength training, which is important for prevention frailty.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, immunotherapies and targeted therapies contribute to population-level improvement in NSCLC cancer-specific survival, however, the two novel therapeutic options have mainly benefit patients containing mutated driven genes. Thus, to explore other potential genes related with immunity or targeted therapies may provide novel options to improve survival of lung cancer patients without mutated driven genes. CTSF is unique in human cysteine proteinases. Presently, CTSF has been detected in several cell lines of lung cancer, but its role in progression and prognosis of lung cancer remains unclear. METHODS: CTSF expression and clinical datasets of lung cancer patients were obtained from GTEx, TIMER, CCLE, THPA, and TCGA, respectively. Association of CTSF expression with clinicopathological parameters and prognosis of lung cancer patients was analyzed using UALCAN and Kaplan-Meier Plotter, respectively. LinkedOmics were used to analyze correlation between CTSF and CTSF co-expressed genes. Protein-protein interaction and gene-gene interaction were analyzed using STRING and GeneMANIA, respectively. Association of CTSF with molecular markers of immune cells and immunomodulators was analyzed with Immunedeconv and TISIDB, respectively. RESULTS: CTSF expression was currently only available for patients with NSCLC. Compared to normal tissues, CTSF was downregulated in NSCLC samples and high expressed CTSF was correlated with favorable prognosis of NSCLC. Additionally, CTSF expression was correlated with that of immune cell molecular markers and immunomodulators both in LUAD and LUSC. Noticeably, high expression of CTSF-related CTLA-4 was found to be associated with better OS of LUAD patients. Increased expression of CTSF-related LAG-3 was related with poor prognosis of LUAD patients while there was no association between CTSF-related PD-1/PD-L1 and prognosis of LUAD patients. Moreover, increased expression of CTSF-related CD27 was related with poor prognosis of LUAD patients while favorable prognosis of LUSC patients. CONCLUSIONS: CTSF might play an anti-tumor effect via regulating immune response of NSCLC.
