RESUMO

Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) aqueous phases derived from mixed sludge and digested sludge of two wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) were characterized considering variations in primary-secondary sludge ratios, an aspect previously overlooked in the literature. Mixed sludge was obtained by mixing primary and secondary sludge to simulate high primary sludge, average, and high secondary sludge cases. Aerobic and mesophilic/thermophilic anaerobic biodegradability tests were conducted. Higher chemical oxygen demand, total ammonium-N, orthophosphate-P, fatty acids, and N-heterocycles in HTL aqueous samples were detected as the secondary sludge ratio increased in mixed sludge. A similar trend was observed in the biodegradability tests. Characteristics of HTL aqueous derived from mixed sludge of WWTP 1 showed much higher variation, whereas WWTP 2 mixed sludge was not affected significantly by primary-secondary sludge ratios. Finally, the biodegradability levels of HTL aqueous samples were determined to be 69-78 % under aerobic, 58-70 % under mesophilic anaerobic, and 42-56 % under thermophilic anaerobic conditions.

RESUMO

How did the motorcycle emissions evolve during the economic development in China? To address data gaps, this study firstly measured the volatile organic compound (VOC) and intermediate-volatility organic compound (IVOC) emissions from motorcycles. The results confirmed that the emission control of motorcycles, especially small-displacement motorcycles, significantly lagged behind other gasoline-powered vehicles. For the China IV motorcycles, the average VOC and IVOC emission factors (EFs) were 2.74 and 7.78 times higher than the China V-VI light-duty gasoline vehicles, respectively. The notable high IVOC emissions were attributed to a dual influence from gasoline and lubricating oil. Furthermore, based on the complete EF dataset and economy-related activity data, a county-level emission inventory was developed in China. Motorcycle VOC and IVOC emissions changed from 2536.48 Gg and 197.19 Gg in 2006 to 594.21 Gg and 12.66 Gg in 2020, respectively. The absence of motorcycle IVOC emissions in the existed vehicular inventories led to an underestimation of up to 20%. Across the 15 years, the motorcycle VOC and IVOC emission hotspots were concentrated in the undeveloped regions, with the rural emissions reaching 5.81-10.14 times those of the urban emissions. This study provides the first-hand and close-to-realistic data to support motorcycle emission management and accurate air quality simulations.

RESUMO

The European Council completed the legislative procedure to establish the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) on April 25, 2023, which will be launched in 2027. The iron and steel sector is the main target of the forthcoming CBAM due to the industry's energy-intensive consumption with high carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. However, minimal existing research has been conducted in this regard. This study employs GTAP-e 11.0 and TOPSIS models to estimate the effects of CBAM implementation on the major nations around the world from 2027 to 2030, examining countries' GDP, social welfare, iron and steel production, trade balance, and CO2 emissions to the global environment. This study concludes: (1) The GDP and social welfare of important iron and steel trade partners throughout the world will be significantly impacted by the application of CBAM. Most nations, including those in the EU, will experience negative GDP effects, with China undergoing the most pronounced social welfare declines followed by India. In contrast, the EU27 will benefit the most in terms of social welfare, followed by the US, Japan, and Russia. (2) Iron and steel production will decrease in all countries outside the EU, but it will have a positive impact on the trade balance of most countries. (3) The CO2 emissions of all countries except for the EU and Japan will decrease, with a positive impact on preventing carbon leakage in the international iron and steel trade. (4) Comprehensive analysis demonstrates that the EU will benefit the most, and China will suffer the most from CBAM application. Based on the above conclusions, this study proposes corresponding policy recommendations.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Many equations to estimate the resting energy expenditure (REE) of patients with burns are currently available, but which of them provides the best guide to optimize nutrition support is controversial. This review examined the bias and precision of commonly used equations in patients with severe burns. METHODS: A systematic search of the PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases was undertaken on June 1, 2023, to identify studies comparing predicted REE (using equations) with measured REE (by indirect calorimetry [IC]) in adults with severe burns. Meta-analyses of bias and calculations of precisions were performed in each predictive equation, respectively. RESULTS: Nine eligible studies and 12 eligible equations were included. Among the equations, the Toronto equation had the lowest bias (26.1 kcal/day; 95% CI, -417.0 to 469.2), followed by the Harris-Benedict equation × 1.5 (1.5HB) and the Milner equation. The Ireton-Jones equation (303.4 kcal/day; 95% CI, 224.5-382.3) acceptably overestimated the REE. The accuracy of all of the equations was <50%. The Ireton-Jones equation had the relatively highest precision (41.2%), followed by the 1.5HB equation (37.0%) and the Toronto equation (34.7%). CONCLUSION: For adult patients with severe burns, all of the commonly used equations for the prediction of REE are inaccurate. It is recommended to use IC for accurate REE measurements and to use the Toronto equation, 1.5HB equation, or Ireton-Jones equation as a reference when IC is not available. Further studies are needed to propose more accurate REE predictive models.

RESUMO

River ecosystems, acting as pivotal conduits linking terrestrial, marine, and atmospheric realms, have faced significant disturbances due to human exploitation of their resources. Recent years have witnessed a heightened intensification of human activities, adversely affecting the equilibrium of water ecosystems. To systematically study the various factors that affect river ecosystems under human activities, we introduce a universally applicable approach that considers the diversity of watersheds, biogenic elements, and human activities. Using this method, this application uncovers the sensitive human activity types, biogenic factors, and species significantly influencing river biodiversity within the study area. Incorporating statistical modelling, sensitivity screening, and advanced correlation analyses within a random forest regression framework, Sensitive biogenic elements and biological types affected by human activities were identified in typical watersheds, and the stability of different aquatic ecosystems was evaluated. Suggestions for watershed management measures were proposed When human activities affect the degree of water resource development and utilization, the forms of sensitive biogenic elements include DIC and Tsi; When human activities affect the discharge of pollutants into rivers, the forms of sensitive biogenic elements include TP, PP, and DEP, and the ratio composition includes TC: TN, TC: TP, TP: TSi, and TN: TP, This study pioneers a novel method for assessing human impacts on river ecosystems and successfully applies this approach to inform management decisions for river segments and tributaries in the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River basin. thereby enhancing our understanding of the consequences of human-induced impacts on biodiversity.

RESUMO

Background: Mental disorders are largely socially determined, yet the combined impact of multidimensional social factors on the two most common mental disorders, depression and anxiety, remains unclear. Methods: We constructed a polysocial risk score (PsRS), a multidimensional social risk indicator including components from three domains: socioeconomic status, neighborhood and living environment and psychosocial factors. Supported by the UK Biobank cohort, we randomly divided 110 332 participants into the discovery cohort (60%; n = 66 200) and the replication cohort (40%; n = 44 134). We tested the associations between 13 single social factors with Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ) score, Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD) score and self-reported depression and anxiety. The significant social factors were used to calculate PsRS for each mental disorder by considering weights from the multivariable linear model. Generalized linear models were applied to explore the association between PsRS and depression and anxiety. Genome-wide environmental interaction study (GWEIS) was further performed to test the effect of interactions between PsRS and SNPs on the risk of mental phenotypes. Results: In the discovery cohort, PsRS was positively associated with PHQ score (ß = 0.37; 95% CI = 0.35-0.38), GAD score (ß = 0.27; 95% CI = 0.25-0.28), risk of self-reported depression (OR = 1.29; 95% CI = 1.28-1.31) and anxiety (OR = 1.19; 95% CI = 1.19-1.23). Similar results were observed in the replication cohort. Emotional stress, lack of social support and low household income were significantly associated with the development of depression and anxiety. GWEIS identified multiple candidate loci for PHQ score, such as rs149137169 (ST18) (Pdiscovery = 1.08 × 10-8, Preplication = 3.25 × 10-6) and rs3759812 (MYO9A) (Pdiscovery = 3.87 × 10-9, Preplication = 6.21 × 10-5). Additionally, seven loci were detected for GAD score, such as rs114006170 (TMPRSS11D) (Pdiscovery = 1.14 × 10-9, Preplication = 7.36 × 10-5) and rs77927903 (PIP4K2A) (Pdiscovery = 2.40 × 10-9, Preplication = 0.002). Conclusions: Our findings reveal the positive effects of multidimensional social factors on the risk of depression and anxiety. It is important to address key social disadvantage in mental health promotion and treatment.

RESUMO

The articles involving Xiangju Capsules were retrieved, and qualitative research and quantitative research methods were combined to evaluate the evidence of the safety, effectiveness, economy, innovation, suitability, accessibility, and characteristics of traditional Chinese medicine( "6+1" dimensions) of this drug. Multi-criteria decision analysis(MCDA) model and CSC v2.0 software were used to comprehensively evaluate the clinical value of Xiangju Capsules in the treatment of rhinosinusitis and clarify the precise clinical positioning. The dimensions are graded A, B, C, or D. Multi-source safety evidence showed that the main adverse reactions were gastrointestinal reactions, rash, itching, dizziness, and headache. Based on the available studies, the risk is controllable and the safety is grade A. Meta-analysis showed that Xiangju Capsules + conventional western medicine could recover the Lund-Kennedy score, Lund-Mackay score, and CT score, relieve headache, nasal congestion, olfactory disturbance, and facial pain, with the effectiveness is grade B. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio of Xiangju Capsules + conventional western medicine compared with conventional western medicine alone in the treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis was 263.71 yuan, about 0.82% of the per capita disposable income. The results of sensitivity analysis showed that the research results were relatively robust. Based on the assumption that the per capita disposable income in 2020 will be the threshold of patients' willingness to pay, it is more economical to use Xiangju Capsules + conventional western medicine. The drug belongs to grade A of the national medical insurance, with an average daily cost of 3.06 yuan, and the economy is grade B. This formula is modified from classic formulas and characteristic empirical formulas, be capable of improving immunity and preventing repeated attacks. It can be used for acute and chronic rhinitis-rhinosinusitis. It had a wide range of applicability, especially for the patients with head and face tenderness. Service innovation was reflected in the measures to guarantee supply, capacity, scalability, and coverage of grass-roots sales channels. The industrial innovation was improved through the management of medicinal resources, pharmaceutical industry, production technology, quality control, scientific research and development, and this formula won three national invention patents. Comprehensively, the innovation of Xiangju Capsules is grade B. According to the survey of 188 medical practitioners and 196 patients in 20 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions of China, the drug was characterized by easy preparation and administration, individualized medication, simple technology and management, convenient use, storage, and transport, and controllable adverse reactions, with the suitability is grade B. Xiangju Capsules showed the cost of 45.9 and 275.4 yuan for treatment of acute and chronic rhinitis-rhinosinusitis, respectively, being well affordable. It was sold in 35 000 medical institutions in China. The dosage form was suitable for transportation, storage, and grass-root application. RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the correlation between the human epidermal growth factor receptor-2-related genes (HRGs) and survival prognosis of bladder cancer and to construct a predictive model for survival prognosis of bladder cancer patients based on HRGs. METHODS: HRGs in bladder cancer were found by downloading bladder tumor tissue mRNA sequencing data and clinical data from the cancer genome atlas (TCGA), downloading HER-2 related genes from the molecular signatures database (MsigDB), and crossing the two databases. Further identifying HRGs associated with bladder cancer survival (P < 0.05) by using single and multi-factor Cox regression analysis and constructing HRGs risk score model (HRSM), the bladder cancer patients were categorized into high-risk and low-risk groups accor-ding to the median risk score. Survival analysis of the patients in high- and low-risk groups was conducted using R language and correlation of HRGs with clinical characteristics. A multi-factor Cox regression analysis was used to verify the independent factors affecting the prognosis of the patients with bladder cancer. The area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) of HRSM was calculated, and a nomogram was constructed for survival prediction of the bladder cancer patients. Analysis of HRSM and patient immune cell infiltration correlation was made using the TIMER database. RESULTS: A total of 13 HRGs associated with patient survival were identified in this study. Five genes (BTC, CDC37, EGF, PTPRR and EREG) were selected for HRSM by multi-factor Cox regression analysis. The 5-year survival rate of the bladder cancer patients in the high-risk group was significantly lower than that of the patients in the low-risk group. High expression of PTPRR was found to be significantly and negatively correlated with tumor grade and stage by clinical correlation analysis, while EREG was found to be the opposite; Increased expression of EGF was associated with high grade, however, the high expression ofCDC37showed the opposite result. And no significant correlation was found between BTC expression and clinical features. Correlation analysis of HRSM with immune cells revealed a positive correlation between risk score and infiltration of dendritic cells, CD8+T cells, CD4+T cells, neutrophils and macrophages. CONCLUSION: HRGs have an important role in the prognosis of bladder cancer patients and may serve as new predictive biomarkers and potential targets for treatment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Little information is available regarding the impact of air pollution on cognitive impairment in older individuals in developing countries. This study empirically tested the impacts of the air quality index (AQI), air pollution intensity (quantified by the number of days of extreme air pollution in a year), and different pollutants on the cognitive abilities of older Chinese individuals. METHODS: A panel of 28,395 participants spanning 122 cities in 2015 and 2018 was used, based on 3-year follow-up survey data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) database. Data from the two phases of the CHARLS microsurvey were combined with relevant statistical data on air pollution in each region in the current year. These two surveys were used to investigate changes in basic health and macro-environmental indicators in older individuals in China, and a mean difference test was conducted. We then reduced the sample selection error by controlling for environmental migration and used two-way fixed and instrumental variable methods for endogenous treatment to avoid the estimation error caused by missing variables. RESULTS: Air pollution had a significantly negative effect on the cognitive abilities of older individuals (odds ratio [OR]: 1.4633; 95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 1.20899-1.77116). Different pollution intensities(only AQI value is greater than 200 or more) had apparent effects on cognitive impairment, with an OR of approximately 1.0. Sulfur dioxide had significantly negative effects on cognitive ability, with OR of 1.3802 (95% CI: 1.25779-1.51451). Furthermore, air pollution impact analysis showed heterogeneous results in terms of age, sex, education, and regional economic development level. In addition, social adaptability (calculated using social participation, learning, adaptability, and social support) not only had a significant positive effect on the cognitive abilities of older individuals, but also regulated the cognitive decline caused by air pollution. CONCLUSIONS: Air pollution affects cognitive impairment in older individuals, especially in those with lower education levels, and living in economically underdeveloped areas. This effect is synchronous and has a peak at an AQI of > 200.

RESUMO

The lockdown policy deals a severe blow to the economy and greatly reduces the nitrogen oxides (NOx) emission in China when the coronavirus 2019 spreads widely in early 2020. Here we use satellite observations from Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument to study the year-round variation of the nitrogen dioxide (NO2) tropospheric vertical column density (TVCD) in 2020. The NO2 TVCD reveals a sharp drop, followed by small fluctuations and then a strong rebound when compared to 2019. By the end of 2020, the annual average NO2 TVCD declines by only 3.4% in China mainland, much less than the reduction of 24.1% in the lockdown period. On the basis of quantitative analysis, we find the rebound of NO2 TVCD is mainly caused by the rapid recovery of economy especially in the fourth quarter, when contribution of industry and power plant on NO2 TVCD continues to rise. This revenge bounce of NO2 indicates the emission reduction of NOx in lockdown period is basically offset by the recovery of economy, revealing the fact that China's economic development and NOx emissions are still not decoupled. More efforts are still required to stimulate low-pollution development.

RESUMO

Background: Since 2009, a series of ambitious health system reforms have been launched in China, including the zero mark-up drug policy (ZMDP); the policy was intended to reduce substantial medicine expenses for patients by abolishing the 15% mark-up on drugs. This study aims to evaluate the impacts of ZMDP on medical expenditures from the perspective of disease burden disparities in western China. Method: Two typical diseases including Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in internal medicine and cholecystolithiasis (CS) in surgery were selected from medical records in a large tertiary level-A hospital in SC Province. The monthly average medical expenses of patients from May 2015 to August 2018 were extracted to construct an interrupted time series (ITS) model to evaluate the impact of policy implementation on the economic burden. Results: A total of 5,764 cases were enrolled in our study. The medicine expenses for T2DM patients maintained a negative trend both before and after the intervention of ZMDP. It had declined by 74.3 CNY (P < 0.001) per month on average in the pre-policy period and subsequently dropped to 704.4 CNY (P = 0.028) immediately after the policy. The level change of hospitalization expenses was insignificant (P = 0.197), with a reduction of 677.7 CNY after the policy, while the post-policy long-term trend was significantly increased by 97.7 CNY (P = 0.035) per month contrasted with the pre-policy period. In addition, the anesthesia expenses of T2DM patients had a significant increase in the level under the impact of the policy. In comparison, the medicine expenses of CS patients significantly decreased by 1,014.2 CNY (P < 0.001) after the policy, while the total hospitalization expenses had no significant change in level and slope under the influence of ZMDP. Furthermore, the expenses of surgery and anesthesia for CS patients significantly increased by 320.9 CNY and 331.4 CNY immediately after the policy intervention. Conclusion: Our study indicated that the ZMDP has been an effective intervention to reduce the excessive medicine expenses for both researched medical and surgical diseases, but failed to show any long-term advantage. Moreover, the policy has no significant impact on relieving the overall hospitalization burden for either condition.

RESUMO

Background: The 2021 Chinese Expert Consensus on the Clinical Application of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccine recommended vaccination for women who previously received ablative or excisional treatment for high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL). This study evaluates the cost-effectiveness of HPV vaccination in women previously treated for cervical precancerous lesions. Methods: We used a Markov model to simulate the disease progression of both low- and high-risk HPV subtypes. We followed a cohort of 100,000 women aged 18-45 years who received treatment for cervical precancerous lesions for a lifetime (80 years). We used the Incremental Cost-Effectiveness Ratios (ICER) with a 5% discount rate to measure the cost-effectiveness of nine vaccination strategies, including a combination of HPV bivalent (HPV-2), quadrivalent (HPV-4) and nonavalent vaccine (HPV-9), each with three vaccination doses (one-, two- and three-dose). We conducted one-way sensitivity analysis and probabilistic sensitivity analysis. We followed the CHEERS 2022 guidelines. Results: Compared to the status quo, the nine vaccination strategies would result in $3.057-33.124 million incremental cost and 94-1,211 incremental quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) in 100,000 women previously treated for cervical precancerous lesions. Three vaccination strategies were identified on the cost-effectiveness frontier. In particular, ICER for one-dose HPV-4 vaccination was US$10,025/QALY compared to the status quo (no vaccination); ICER for two-dose HPV-4 vaccination was US$17,641//QALY gained compared to one-dose HPV-4 vaccination; ICER for three-dose HPV-4 vaccination was US$27,785/QALY gained compared with two-dose HPV-4 vaccination. With a willingness-to-pay of three times gross domestic product per capita (US$37655), three-dose HPV-4 vaccination was the most cost-effective vaccination strategy compared with the lower-cost non-dominated strategy on the cost-effectiveness frontier. A probabilistic sensitivity analysis confirmed a 99.1% probability of being cost-effective. If the cost of the HPV-9 is reduced to 50% of the current price, three-dose HPV-9 vaccination would become the most cost-effective strategy. Discussion: Three-dose HPV-4 vaccination is the most cost-effective vaccination strategy for women treated for precancerous cervical lesions in the Chinese setting.

RESUMO

Background: Catastrophic disease sufferers face a heavy financial burden and are more likely to fall victim to the "illness-poverty-illness" cycle. Deeper reform of the medical insurance system is urgently required to alleviate the financial burden of individuals with catastrophic diseases. Methods: Data were obtained from a cross-sectional questionnaire survey conducted in Heilongjiang in 2021, and logistic regression and restricted cubic spline model was used to predict the core factors related to medical insurance that alleviate the financial burden of people with catastrophic diseases. Results: Overall, 997 (50.92%) medical insurance-related professionals negatively viewed financial burden relief for people with catastrophic diseases. Factors influencing its effectiveness in relieving the financial burden were: whether or not effective control of omissions from medical insurance coverage (OR = 4.04), fund supervision (OR = 2.47) and degree of participation of stakeholders (OR = 1.91). Besides, the reimbursement standards and the regional and population benefit package gap also played a role. The likelihood of financial burden relief increased by 21 percentage points for each unit increase in the level of stakeholder discourse power in reform. Conclusion: China's current medical insurance policies have not yet fully addressed the needs of vulnerable populations, especially the need to reduce their financial burden continuously. Future reform should focus on addressing core issues by reducing the uninsured, enhancing the width and depth of medical insurance coverage, improving the level and capacity of medical insurance governance that provides more discourse power for the vulnerable population, and building a more responsive and participatory medical insurance governance system.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Telenomus remus (Nixon) is a dominant natural enemy controlling the invasive pest Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith). Continuous rearing of egg parasitoids on alternative hosts is crucial for mass production and cost reduction. However, to ensure the effectiveness of natural enemy products against target pests in the field, it is necessary to evaluate the parasitoid quality during the mass-rearing process. Despite the successful rearing of this parasitoid on the alternative host Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) eggs, less attention has been paid to the quality of parasitoids continuously reared for multiple generations. Therefore, we evaluated the performance of T. remus reared on S. litura eggs for 30 generations via morphological characteristics, flight ability, and life table analysis. RESULTS: Wing length, wing width, body length, and right hind tibia length of T. remus did not differ among the different generations. However, the body length of female parasitoids was significantly longer than that of males for any generation. Although the proportion of 'flyers' and 'deformed' T. remus varied among generations, the flight ability did not decline significantly after rearing on S. litura eggs. Moreover, T. remus continuously reared on S. litura eggs maintained stable parasitism performance and life table parameters on the target host S. frugiperda eggs. CONCLUSION: S. litura eggs are suitable hosts for the mass-rearing of T. remus. This study can be subsequently used to guide the production and facilitate the application of T. remus in the control of S. frugiperda. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

Recent increases in emissions from freight transport have caused strong concerns about air quality in Pakistan, following the rapid development of projects related to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). This study reported the first measurements of on-road truck emissions in Pakistan and investigated their dependence on altitude along CPEC routes. Emissions from 70 trucks were measured on CPEC highways located in Islamabad (540 m above sea level), Sost (2800 m above sea level), and at the Khunjerab Pass (4693 m above sea level). Calculated emission factors for carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides from heavy-duty trucks in Islamabad were 12.94 ± 1.46, 15.21 ± 1.67, and 10.69 ± 1.34 g km-1 (95% confidence level), respectively, for pre-Pak-II trucks, and 12.75 ± 2.80, 14.24 ± 3.53, and 10.24 ± 2.34 g km-1 (95% confidence level), respectively, for Pak-II trucks, representing 2-20 times higher values than the emission standards in Pakistan and India. An altitude increase of approximately 4000 m, with the associated changes in meteorology and fleet characteristics, induced an average increase of 103.6%, 86.3%, 124.5%, and 133.6% in the emission factors of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, and carbon dioxide, respectively. Moreover, on-road emissions along the CPEC were mainly influenced by truck types. This study will support the budget evaluation of transport emissions from the CPEC trade fleet.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide, accounting for more than 700,000 deaths annually. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is posited to contribute to HCC progression. We, therefore, aimed to elucidate the relationship between EMT-related gene (ERG) expression and prognosis in patients with HCC. METHODS: Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were performed to identify prognostic-related differentially expressed EMT-related genes (DE-ERGs). Time-dependent receiver operating characteristic and Kaplan-Meier curves were used to assess the prognostic performance of the EMT-related signature. pRRophetic R package was used to evaluate sorafenib sensitivity in the GSE14520 cohort. Gene expression in Huh7 and L02 cell lines was detected by real-time PCR and Western blotting. Differential expression of the three genes between HCC tissues and normal tissues was validated using immunohistochemical analyses. RESULTS: Of the 76 identified DE-ERGs, 29 were associated with overall survival. Three prognosis-related ERGs (GOLM1, SOX4, and CD14) were screened out by multivariate Cox regression. A gene signature was identified based on the three prognostic-related ERGs. HCC patients with a low-risk score had a better prognosis and were more sensitive to sorafenib compared to those with a high-risk score. Moreover, we further confirmed increased expression of GOLM1 and SOX4, and decreased expression of CD14, in liver cancer cell line and HCC tissue. CONCLUSIONS: The results of the present study demonstrate the utility of an ERG signature as a potential biomarker informing prognosis in patients with HCC, which may contribute to the implementation of personalized therapies.

RESUMO

Over the past decade, the emission standards and fuel standards in Beijing have been upgraded twice, and the vehicle structure has been improved by accelerating the elimination of 2.95 million old vehicles. Through the formulation and implementation of these policies, the emissions of carbon monoxide (CO), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in 2019 were 147.9, 25.3, 43.4, and 0.91 kton in Beijing, respectively. The emission factor method was adopted to better understand the emissions characteristics of primary air pollutants from combustion engine vehicles and to improve pollution control. In combination with the air quality improvement goals and the status of social and economic development during the 14th Five-Year Plan period in Beijing, different vehicle pollution control scenarios were established, and emissions reductions were projected. The results show that the emissions of four air pollutants (CO, VOCs, NOx, and PM2.5) from vehicles in Beijing decreased by an average of 68% in 2019, compared to their levels in 2009. The contribution of NOx emissions from diesel vehicles increased from 35% in 2009 to 56% in 2019, which indicated that clean and energy-saving diesel vehicle fleets should be further improved. Electric vehicle adoption could be an important measure to reduce pollutant emissions. With the further upgrading of vehicle structure and the adoption of electric vehicles, it is expected that the total emissions of the four vehicle pollutants can be reduced by 20%-41% by the end of the 14th Five-Year Plan period.

RESUMO

Introduction: African Swine Fever (ASF) is a highly infectious disease of pigs, caused by African swine fever virus (ASFV). The lack of vaccines and drugs makes strict disinfection practices to be one of the main measurements to curb the transmission of ASF. Therefore, it is important to assess if all viruses are inactivated after disinfection or after long time exposure in their natural conditions. Currently, the infectivity of ASFV is determined by virus isolation and culture in a biosafety level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory. However, BSL-3 laboratories are not readily available, need skilled expertise and may be time consuming. Methods: In this study, a Triton X-100 assisted PMAxx-qPCR method was developed for rapid assessment of infectious ASFV in samples. PMAxx, an improved version of propidium monoazide (PMA), can covalently cross-link with naked ASFV-DNA or DNA inside inactivated ASFV virions under assistance of 0.1% (v/v) TritonX-100, but not with ASFV-DNA inside live virions. Formation of PMAxx-DNA conjugates prevents PCR amplification, leaving only infectious virions to be detected. Under optimum conditions, the limit of detection of the PMAxx-qPCR assay was 2.32log10HAD50/mL of infectious ASFV. Testing different samples showed that the PMAxx-qPCR assay was effective to evaluate intact ASFV virions after treatment by heat or chemical disinfectants and in simulated samples such as swine tissue homogenate, swine saliva swabs, and environmental swabs. However, whole-blood and saliva need to be diluted before testing because they may inhibit the PCR reaction or the cross-linking of PMAxx with DNA. Conclusion: The Triton X-100 assisted PMAxx-qPCR assay took less than 3 h from sample to result, offering an easier and faster way for assessing infectious ASFV in samples from places like pig farms and pork markets.

RESUMO

The design and implementation of public health policy may shape state innovation capacity with governance effectiveness, political stability, and government integrity. Previous studies, however, failed to incorporate these relationships simultaneously. This study aims to combine two distinct scholarships to examine whether the quality of policies in the public health sector contributes to state innovation capacity. We extracted data from the WHO international health regulatory dataset covering the WHO Member States between 2010 and 2017 to investigate the relationship (N = 145). Our fixed-effects models and regression discontinuity design (RDD) suggest a positive impact of public health policy quality on state innovation capacity. There are several contributions to the study of the relationship between public health and innovation in this study. Firstly, it fills a theoretical void concerning the relationship between policy development and implementation in the public health sector and country-specific innovations. Second, it provides an empirical quantitative analysis of policy quality in the public health sector. Third, this study contributes evidence that public health plays an important role in fostering state innovation beyond urbanization, investment in science and technology, and foreign trade. Furthermore, our quasi-experimental evidence found that this mechanism may be significant only between the more politically stable countries and the most politically stable countries. These contributions have empirical implications for governments across the world that seek to balance public health and innovation capacity in the context of the post-pandemic era.

RESUMO

Semivolatile/intermediate-volatility organic compounds (S/IVOCs) from mobile sources are essential SOA contributors. However, few studies have comprehensively evaluated the SOA contributions of S/IVOCs by simultaneously comparing different parameterization schemes. This study used three SOA schemes in the CMAQ model with a measurement-based emission inventory to quantify the mobile source S/IVOC-induced SOA (MS-SI-SOA) for 2018 in China. Among different SOA schemes, SOA predicted by the 2D-VBS scheme was in the best agreement with observations, but there were still large deviations in a few regions. Three SOA schemes showed the peak value of annual average MS-SI-SOA was up to 0.6 ± 0.3 µg/m3. High concentrations of MS-SI-SOA were detected in autumn, while the notable relative contribution of MS-SI-SOA to total SOA was predicted in the coastal areas in summer, with a regional average contribution up to 20 ± 10% in Shanghai. MS-SI-SOA concentrations varied by up to 2 times among three SOA schemes, mainly due to the discrepancy in SOA precursor emissions and chemical reactions, suggesting that the differences between SOA schemes should also be considered in modeling studies. These findings identify the hotspot areas and periods for MS-SI-SOA, highlighting the importance of S/IVOC emission control in the future upgrading of emission standards.
