RESUMO

Treatment outcomes for different causes of childhood dwarfism vary widely, and there are no studies on the economic burden of treatment in relation to outcomes. This paper compared the efficacy and healthcare costs per unit height of recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) for the treatment of growth hormone deficiency (GHD) and idiopathic short stature (ISS) with a view to providing a more cost-effective treatment option for children. We retrospectively analyzed 117 cases (66 cases of GHD and 51 cases of ISS) of short-stature children who first visited Weifang People's Hospital between 2019.1 and 2022.1 and were treated with rhGH for 1 to 3 years to track the treatment effect and statistically analyzed by using paired t tests, non-parametric tests, and chi-square tests, to evaluate the efficacy of rhGH treatment for GHD and ISS children and the medicinal cost. The annual growth velocity (GV) of children with GHD and ISS increased the fastest during 3 to 6 months after treatment and then gradually slowed down. The GV of the GHD group was higher than that of the ISS group from 0 to 36 months after treatment (P < .05 at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months); the height standard deviation scores (HtSDS) of the children in the GHD and ISS groups increased gradually with the increase of the treatment time, and the changes in the height standard deviation scores (ΔHtSDS) of the GHD group were more significant than those of the ISS group (P < .05 at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months). (2) The medical costs in the pubertal group for a 1-cm increase in height were higher than those of children in the pre-pubertal group at the same stage (3 to 24 months P < .05). The longer the treatment time within the same group, the higher the medical cost of increasing 1cm height. RhGH is effective in treating children with dwarfism to promote height growth, and the effect on children with GHD is better than that of children with ISS; the earlier the treatment time, the lower the medical cost and the higher the comprehensive benefit.

RESUMO

This study aimed to assess pulmonary changes at 6-month follow-up CT and predictors of pulmonary residual abnormalities and fibrotic-like changes in COVID-19 pneumonia patients in China following relaxation of COVID restrictions in 2022. A total of 271 hospitalized patients with COVID-19 pneumonia admitted between November 29, 2022 and February 10, 2023 were prospectively evaluated at 6 months. CT characteristics and Chest CT scores of pulmonary abnormalities were compared between the initial and the 6-month CT. The association of demographic and clinical factors with CT residual abnormalities or fibrotic-like changes were assessed using logistic regression. Follow-up CT scans were obtained at a median of 177 days (IQR, 170-185 days) after hospital admission. Pulmonary residual abnormalities and fibrotic-like changes were found in 98 (36.2%) and 39 (14.4%) participants. In multivariable analysis of pulmonary residual abnormalities and fibrotic-like changes, the top three predictive factors were invasive ventilation (OR 13.6; 95% CI 1.9, 45; P < .001), age > 60 years (OR 9.1; 95% CI 2.3, 39; P = .01), paxlovid (OR 0.11; 95% CI 0.04, 0.48; P = .01) and invasive ventilation (OR 10.3; 95% CI 2.9, 33; P = .002), paxlovid (OR 0.1; 95% CI 0.03, 0.48; P = .01), smoker (OR 9.9; 95% CI 2.4, 31; P = .01), respectively. The 6-month follow-up CT of recent COVID-19 pneumonia cases in China showed a considerable proportion of the patients with pulmonary residual abnormalities and fibrotic-like changes. Antivirals against SARS-CoV-2 like paxlovid may be beneficial for long-term regression of COVID-19 pneumonia.

RESUMO

Having a mental health (MH) or substance use (SU) issue can make the transition from prison to the community a challenging process. Despite this, few studies have quantified how justice-involved individuals with mental health issues only, substance use only, those with both struggles, and those with neither are uniquely affected. Using a sample of re-entering men who were released from twelve state prisons in the United States, we assessed the effects of having MH and SU issues on their drug use during re-entry. Furthermore, we examined their differing coping reactions to housing insecurity, joblessness, and family tension after release. The results demonstrated that respondents' risk of SU during re-entry was associated with MH and SU issues measured at release. Those with co-occurring MH and SU challenges were at the highest risk of SU during re-entry. Furthermore, challenging life situations during re-entry exerted an amplified effect on SU for respondents with both anxiety and SU issues. The findings suggest that post-incarcerated individuals with co-occurring MH and SU issues have the highest risk of SU, and their reaction to re-entry barriers is distinct from their peers. Quality services to address co-occurring MH and SU may be needed to facilitate a smooth transition from prison to the community.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the quality of life and burden of disease of vulvar lichen sclerosus (VLS) patients in three states of menstruation to better understand VLS. METHODS: A total of 607 VLS patients were enrolled into this retrospective study. According to the ages of onset, menarche and menopause, the patients were divided into three groups: prepubertal group (n = 96), reproductive group (n = 400) and postmenopausal group (n = 111). Data were collected by direct interview and clinical examination. RESULTS: A total of 93% of patients had itching, with a median numerical rating scale score of five. In the prepubertal group, the median score was three. Nocturnal itching occurred in 49.6% patients. Nearly half of the patients (45.9%) thought the itching affected their sleep. However, this ratio was very different in the prepubertal group (20.7%). Some patients (12.8%) cleaned their vulva more than seven times per week. Only 17.2% of patients experienced no effect on their sex life. The median dermatology life quality index score in all patients was six, but it was only three in the prepubertal group. The median number of hospital visits was two times, and the number of clinic visits was three times. Previous expenses, in median, were 2000 RMB. For 84.3% patients, the gynecologic clinic was their first choice. CONCLUSION: VLS places great physical, mental and economic burdens on patients. Patients in the prepubertal group had milder symptoms and dermatology life quality index score. VLS should arouse the attention of patients and specialists.

RESUMO

Cancer surgery remains a mainstay in clinical treatment. However, the efficacy of subsequent therapies largely depends on the precise evaluation of postoperative prognoses, underscoring the critical need for a comprehensive and accurate assessment of surgical outcomes. Nanoprobes targeting tumors offer a promising solution for visual prognostic assessment. In this study, we developed a "Spindle Monitor" system, designated as APPADs (Au NBPs@PDA-pep-AS1411-Dox), composed of core-shell nanoparticles. The core was made up of gold nanobipyramids (Au NBPs), coated with polydopamine (PDA), and subsequently loaded with peptide chains, AS1411, and doxorubicin (Dox). Upon deployment in the acidic tumor microenvironment (TME), APPADs released substantial amounts of Dox, initiating the apoptotic process. This triggered the activity of caspase-3, which is a crucial executor in the apoptotic pathway. Consequently, DEVD, a specific recognition site for caspase-3, was cleaved, enabling the disconnection of FITC-conjugated peptide chains and the recovery of fluorescence. Through assessing this fluorescence imaging effect, local laser irradiation could be precisely guided to the postoperative site, facilitating a synergistic combination of photothermal therapy and chemotherapy. Specifically, our "Spindle Monitor" APPADs had been validated to achieve accurate fluorescence imaging in vitro and in vivo, which demonstrated its potential value as a versatile tool for evaluating postoperative prognosis in surgical treatments, such as thyroid cancer, and assessing chemotherapy efficacy in difficult cases, like late-stage osteosarcoma. This promising tool lays a good foundation for development in visual prognosis evaluation after tumor surgery.

RESUMO

This study employs a Bayesian panel vector autoregressive model to examine the impact of economic uncertainty on public health, using an annual, country-level panel dataset of 103 emerging markets and developing countries spanning the years 1995 through 2019. The results from the full sample suggest that the immediate effects of heightened economic uncertainty on health are marginal, yet it may engender prolonged life expectancy and lowered mortality rates. The analysis unveils considerable heterogeneities among various country classifications. The health-enhancing effects of economic uncertainty are predominantly discernible in emerging markets, low-income and upper-middle-income countries. Additionally, a diminution in suicide rates, attributed to escalated economic uncertainty, is uniquely detected in upper-middle-income countries. Furthermore, economic growth and healthcare expenditure emerge as paramount determinants in bolstering overall population health, particularly in lower-middle-income countries. The detrimental effect of environmental pollution on health is more pronounced in emerging markets and middle-income nations. Excluding high-income countries, it is essential to emphasize the beneficial health outcomes resulting from financial development and globalization, as well as the deleterious effects of environmental pollution. Lastly, several policy implications aligned with the findings are outlined, providing a roadmap for decision-makers in these diverse economies to promote better health outcomes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Healthy China is a nationwide health strategy aiming at improving health from diverse dimensions, and strengthening high-quality assessment is essential for its stimulation. However, there is limited evidence in the surveillance of the actual performance of the initiative at regional levels. This study innovatively proposes a two-step surveillance process which comprehensively monitors Healthy China Initiative based on regional realities, thus provides guidance for policymaking. METHODS: A flexible indicator system was firstly developed basing on Delphi survey and focus group discussions. And then the Analysis Hierarchical Process and the TOPSIS method were used to determine the weights of indicators and calculate comprehensive indexes as the surveillance outcomes. A pilot study was conducted in a typical area in China to verify the applicability of the process. RESULTS: Following the surveillance process and basing on the implementation of Healthy China Initiative in the target region, an indicator system comprised of 5 domains and 23 indicators with weights was first developed specifically for the pilot area. Then 1848 interagency data of the study area were collected from 8 provincial institutions/departments to calculate the indexes and ranks of the five domains which were health level, healthy living, disease prevention and control, health service, and healthy environment. The outcomes showed that Healthy China Initiative in the pilot area had been constantly improved since the strategy proposed, while there were still issues to be tackled such as the deficient monitoring mechanisms and unevenly development progress. CONCLUSIONS: This study proposed a pragmatic surveillance process with indicators which could be tailored for specific context of target regions and produce meaningful surveillance outcomes to inform decision-making for policymakers, and also provided a theoretical foundation as well as empirical evidence for further health strategies and plannings assessment studies.

RESUMO

Background/objective: The outbreak of COVID-19 in China since 2019 has had a significant impact on the mental health of people in Hubei Province during the three-year pandemic period. Therefore, studying the prevalence of depression among the population of Hubei Province since the pandemic is of great significance. Methods: Based on opportunity and stress theory, we collected provincial-level data from Hubei (N = 3,285) to examine the impact of declining economic status on depressive symptoms and to investigate the moderating effect of psychological resilience during the period of economic adjustment. Results: We used propensity score matching to estimate the treatment effect of economic status decline on depression severity and confirmed the moderating effect of psychological resilience. We found that the more that an individual's economic status declines, the more severe that his or her depressive symptoms become. Specifically, each unit decrease in economic status is associated with an increase of approximately 0.117 units in depression level. In addition, our results indicated that psychological resilience significantly moderated the relationship between economic decline and depression (-0.184*). Conclusions and implications: Our study confirms the role of economic status in depressive symptoms. Compared with traditional research on the relationship between economic status and mental illness, this paper expands the research regarding the two in the context of a major public health emergency. Furthermore, we suggest ways to improve people's mental health following the pandemic.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of our study was to evaluate the interocular symmetry and distribution of peripapillary vessel density in young myopic eyes. METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study was designed. A total of 174 eyes of 87 young myopic patients were recruited in this study. According to spherical equivalent (SE), 48 eyes were classified as mild myopia with a mean SE of - 2.12D (SD 0.66D), 66 as moderate myopia with a mean SE of - 4.50D (SD 0.87D), and 60 as high myopia with a mean SE of - 7.39D (SD 1.30D). Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) was used to measure the vessel density. The distribution and interocular symmetry of peripapillary vessel densities were analyzed. RESULTS: The vessel densities in the whole image, peripapillary, superior and inferior sectors were significantly lower in the high myopia group than in the mild or moderate myopia group (All P < 0.001), and the density in the nasal sector was significantly lower in the high myopia group than in the mild group. And most interesting, the vessel densities in the inside disc and temporal sector showed no difference among the three myopic groups (All P > 0.05). By Pearson correlation analysis, the vessel densities in the whole image, peripapillary, superior, inferior and nasal sectors were negatively correlated with axial length (AL) and SE (All P < 0.001), but vessel densities in the inside disc and temporal sector did not show this correlation (All P > 0.05). Interocular symmetry was observed in all the vascular parameters through paired-samples t-tests (All P > 0.05), intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Pearson correlation analysis (All P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The density of radial peripapillary capillaries decreased in the myopic eye with axial elongation, and optical vascular parameters showed significant interocular symmetry among young myopic eyes.

RESUMO

Organic pollutants in aquatic environment could have important implications on pollution stress on aquatic organisms and even on the risk of human exposure. Thus, revealing their occurrence in aquatic environment is essential for water quality monitoring and ecological risk purposes. In this study, a comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography connected with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC-TOF-MS) was applied, to enable non-target and target analysis of pollutants in the Yongding River Basin. Based on the isotopic patterns, accurate masses and standard substances, certain environmental contaminants were tentatively identified which including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), phenols, amines, etc. The compounds with the highest concentration were naphthalene (109.0 ng/L), 2,3-benzofuran (51.5 ng/L) and 1,4-dichlorobenzene (35.9 ng/L) in Guishui River. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) discharges were a main source of pollutants in Yongding River Basin, as the types of compounds screened in the downstream river were relatively similar to those from WWTPs. According to the target analysis, a number of pollutants were selected due to the acute toxicity and cumulative discharge from WWTPs and downstream rivers. Three PAHs (naphthalene, Benzo(b)fluoranthene and pyrene) homologues showed moderate risk to fish and H. Azteca in Yongding River Basin, while the rest of the measured chemicals showed low ecological impact across the entire study area based on the risk assessment. The results are helpful for understanding the necessity of high-throughput screening analysis for assessing water quality of rivers and the discharge emissions of pollutants from WWTPs to the river environment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Disparities in physical and mental health among Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) are well-documented and mirrored in the Veteran population. Chronic stress due to racism and discrimination is one possible mechanism driving these negative health outcomes. The Race-Based Stress and Trauma Empowerment (RBSTE) group is a novel, manualized, health promotion intervention designed to address the direct and indirect impacts of racism among Veterans of Color. This paper describes the protocol of the first pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) of RBSTE. This study will examine the feasibility, acceptability, and appropriateness of RBSTE compared to an active control (an adaptation of Present-Centered Therapy; PCT) in a Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare setting. A secondary aim is to identify and optimize strategies for holistic evaluation. METHODS: Veterans of Color (N = 48) endorsing perceived discrimination and stress will be randomized to RBSTE or PCT; both groups will be delivered in 8 weekly, 90-min virtual group sessions. Outcomes will include measures of psychological distress, discrimination and ethnoracial identity, holistic wellness, and allostatic load. Measures will be administered at baseline and post-intervention. CONCLUSION: This study will inform future interventions targeting identity-based stressors and represents an important step in advancing equity for BIPOC in medicine and research. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The dural puncture epidural (DPE) and programmed intermittent epidural bolus (PIEB) techniques are recent advances in neuraxial labor analgesia. Previous studies have investigated the PIEB optimal interval for effective analgesia when a standard epidural technique is used to initiate labor analgesia. However, it is unknown whether these findings are applicable when DPE is used. METHODS: Patients were randomized into 1 of 5 groups with PIEB intervals of 35, 40, 45, 50, or 55 minutes. Labor analgesia was initiated on request with a DPE technique by epidural injection over 2 minutes of 15 mL of ropivacaine 0.1% with sufentanil 0.5 µg/mL after a dural puncture with a 25-gauge Whitacre needle. Effective analgesia was defined as no additional requirement for a patient-controlled bolus during the first stage of labor. The PIEB interval that was effective in 50% of patients (EI50) and 90% of patients (EI90) was estimated using probit regression. RESULTS: One hundred laboring parturients received the DPE technique of whom 93 proceeded to have analgesia maintained with PIEB using 10 mL boluses of ropivacaine 0.1% and sufentanil 0.5 µg/mL. Totals of 89.5% (17/19), 84.2% (16/19), 82.4% (14/17), 52.6% (11/19), and 36.8% (7/19) of patients in groups 35, 40, 45, 50, and 55, respectively, received effective PIEB analgesia. The estimated values for EI50 and EI90 were 52.5 (95% CI, 48.4-62.6) minutes and 37.0 (95% CI, 28.4-40.9) minutes, respectively. CONCLUSION: The estimate of the PIEB optimal interval for effective analgesia after the DPE technique was comparable to that reported in previous studies when analgesia was initiated using a conventional epidural technique.

RESUMO

Street crime is a common social problem that threatens the security of people's lives and property. Understanding the influencing mechanisms of street crime is an essential precondition for formulating crime prevention strategies. Widespread concern has contributed to the development of streetscape environment features as they can significantly affect the occurrence of street crime. Emerging street view images are a low-cost and highly accessible data source. On the other hand, machine-learning models such as XGBoost (eXtreme Gradient Boosting) usually have higher fitting accuracies than those of linear regression models. Therefore, they are popular for modeling the relationships between crime and related impact factors. However, due to the "black box" characteristic, researchers are unable to understand how each variable contributes to the occurrence of crime. Existing research mainly focuses on the independent impacts of streetscape environment features on street crime, but not on the interaction effects between these features and the community socioeconomic conditions and their local variations. In order to address the above limitations, this study first combines street view images, an objective detection network, and a semantic segmentation network to extract a systematic measurement of the streetscape environment. Then, controlling for socioeconomic factors, we adopted the XGBoost model to fit the relationships between streetscape environment features and street crime at the street segment level. Moreover, we used the SHAP (Shapley additive explanation) framework, a post-hoc machine-learning explainer, to explain the results of the XGBoost model. The results demonstrate that, from a global perspective, the number of people on the street, extracted from street view images, has the most significant impact on street property crime among all the street view variables. The local interpretability of the SHAP explainer demonstrates that a particular variable has different effects on street crime at different street segments. The nonlinear associations between streetscape environment features and street crime, as well as the interaction effects of different streetscape environment features are discussed. The positive effect of the number of pedestrians on street crime increases with the length of the street segment and the number of crime generators. The combination of street view images and interpretable machine-learning techniques is helpful in better accurately understanding the complex relationships between the streetscape environment and street crime. Furthermore, the readily comprehensible results can offer a reference for formulating crime prevention strategies.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Previous reports have suggested that inflammation levels play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of high myopia (HM). This study aimed to investigate the relationship between HM and systemic inflammation using the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR). METHODS: Overall, 100 age- and sex-matched participants were recruited for the study, including 50 participants each in the non-HM (NHM) and HM groups. Ocular examinations and blood tests were performed. The NLR and PLR values were calculated from complete blood counts. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and optimal cut-off values were used to determine the optimal values of the NLR and PLR to distinguish between the HM and NHM groups. RESULTS: The values of NLR and PLR were significantly elevated in the HM group compared with those in the NHM group (P < 0.001 and P = 0.010, respectively). Axial length (AL) was significantly correlated with the NLR (r = 0.367, P < 0.001) and PLR (r = 0.262, P = 0.009). In the ROC analysis, the NLR value to distinguish between the HM and NHM groups was 0.728; the best cut-off value was 2.68, with 76% sensitivity and 62% specificity. The PLR value to distinguish between the HM and NHM groups was 0.650; the best cut-off value was 139.69, with 52% sensitivity and 76% specificity. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study indicate that the development of HM may be associated with systemic inflammation measured using the NLR and PLR. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The study was registered on December 28, 2021 ( http://www.chictr.org.cn ; ChiCTR2100054834).

RESUMO

High mortality and involuntary culling rates cause great economic losses to the worldwide dairy cattle industry. However, there is low emphasis on wellness traits in replacement animals (dairy calves and replacement heifers) during their development stages in modern dairy cattle breeding programs. Therefore, the main objectives of this study were to estimate genetic parameters of wellness traits in replacement cattle (replacement wellness traits) and obtain their genetic correlations with 12 cow health and longevity traits in the Chinese Holstein population. Seven replacement wellness traits were analyzed, including birth weight, survival from 3 to 60 d (Sur1), survival from 61 to 365 d (Sur2), survival from 366 d to the first calving (Sur3), calf diarrhea, calf pneumonia, and calf serum total protein (STP). Single and bivariate animal models were employed to estimate (co)variance components using the data from 189,980 Holstein cattle. The genetic correlations between replacement wellness traits and cow longevity, health traits were calculated by employing bivariate models, including 6 longevity traits and 6 health traits (clinical mastitis, metritis, ketosis, displaced abomasum, milk fever, and hoof health or hoof disease). The estimated heritabilities (± SE) were 0.335 (± 0.008), 0.088 (± 0.005), 0.166 (± 0.006), 0.102 (±0 .006), 0.048 (± 0.003), 0.063 (± 0.004), and 0.170 (± 0.019) for birth weight, Sur1, Sur2, Sur3, pneumonia, diarrhea, and STP, respectively. The majority of the genetic correlations among the 7 replacement wellness traits were negligible. The genetic correlations among Sur1, Sur2, and Sur3 ranged from 0.112 (Sur1 and Sur3) to 0.445 (Sur1 and Sur2) when fitting a linear model (estimates in the observed scale), and from 0.560 (Sur1 and Sur3) to 0.773 (Sur1 and Sur2) when fitting a threshold model (estimates in the liability scale). The genetic correlations between replacement wellness and cow longevity were low (absolute value lower than 0.30), but some of them were significantly different from zero. Compared with other replacement wellness traits, Sur3 and STP had relatively high genetic correlations with cow longevity. Replacement wellness traits are heritable and can be improved through direct genetic and genomic selection. The results from the current study will contribute for better balancing dairy cattle breeding goals to genetically improve dairy cattle wellness in the period from birth to first calving.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited epilepsy fellowships, like other ACGME accredited training programs, use Milestones to establish learning objectives and to evaluate how well trainees are achieving these goals. The ACGME began developing the second iteration of the Milestones 6 years ago, and these are now being adapted to all specialties. Here, we describe the process by which Epilepsy Milestones 2.0 were developed and summarize them. METHODS: A work group of nine board-certified, adult and pediatric epileptologists reviewed Epilepsy Milestones 1.0 and revised them using a modified Delphi approach. RESULTS: The new Milestones share structural changes with all other specialties, including a clearer stepwise progression in professional development and the harmonized Milestones that address competencies common to all medical fields. Much of the epilepsy-specific content remains the same, although a major addition is a set of Milestones focused on reading and interpreting electroencephalograms (EEGs), which the old Milestones lacked. Epilepsy Milestones 2.0 includes a Supplemental Guide to help program directors implement the new Milestones. Together, Epilepsy Milestones 2.0 and the Supplemental Guide recognize advances in epilepsy, including stereo-EEG, neurostimulation, genetics, and safety in epilepsy monitoring units. SIGNIFICANCE: Epilepsy Milestones 2.0 address the shortcomings of the old Milestones and should facilitate the assessment of epilepsy fellowships and fellows by program directors, faculty, and fellows themselves.

RESUMO

Faba bean (Vicia faba L.), although a kind of high-quality and high-yield forage, could hardly achieve a great quality of silage because of its high buffering capacity. Mixed silage of faba bean with forage wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) or oat (Avena sativa L.) at different ratios could improve the fermentation quality and bacterial community. Compared with 100% faba bean silage (BS), mixed silage improved the fermentation quality, not only increased lactic acid production and reduced pH, but reduced the production of propionic acid and ammonia nitrogen. The chemical compositions of faba bean with forage wheat (BT) mixed silage were better than that of faba bean with oat (BO) mixed silage, and that of 3:7, 5:5 (fresh matter basis) mixing ratios were better than 1:9. However, the fermentation quality of BO mixed silage was better than that of BT, and that of 3:7 mixed silage (BO30) was the best overall. Analysis of the bacterial community showed that mixed silage increased the relative abundance of lactic acid bacteria after ensiling, and the relatively higher abundance of Lactobacillus showed the inhibitory effects on the proliferation of Serratia and Hafnia_Obesumbacterium, so that it alleviated their negative effects on silage and stabilized the fermentation quality. This present study exhibited that mixed silage of faba bean with forage wheat or oat not only had significant effects on chemical compositions and fermentation quality of materials but modified bacterial community so that improved the fermentation quality effectively. The mixed silage of 30% faba bean with 70% oat (BO30) is recommended in the faba bean mixed silage.

RESUMO

Since the mainstream of the Yangtze River lower reach is an important drinking water source for residents alongside it, it is essential to investigate the concentration, distribution characteristics and health risks of heavy metals in the water. In this study, a total of 110 water samples were collected on both the left and right banks from the upstream to the downstream. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to determine the sources of heavy metals. Their non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks were studied with health risk assessment models, and uncertainties were determined through Monte Carlo simulation. Results showed that concentrations of all heavy metals were significantly lower than the relevant authoritative standards in the studied area. From the upstream to the downstream, Ni, Cu and Cr had similar concentration distribution rules and mainly originated from human industrial activities. Pb, Cd and Zn had a fluctuating but increasing trend, which was mainly due to the primary geochemistry, traffic pollution and agricultural activities. The maximum As concentration appeared in the upstream mainly because of the carbonatite weathering or mine tail water discharge. Concentrations of Zn, As, Cd and Pb on the left bank were higher than those on the right bank, while concentrations of Cu, Ni and Cr on the right bank were higher than those on the left bank. The non-carcinogenic risk index (HI) was less than 1 (except of L11), and HI on the left bank was higher than that on the right bank. The carcinogenic risk (CR) was generally larger than 1.0 × 10-4, CR on the right bank overall was higher than that on the left bank, and the health risk of kids was greater than that of adults. Furthermore, Monte Carlo simulation results and the actual calculated values were basically the same.

RESUMO

Background: Although positive safety leadership has attracted increasingly academic and practical attention due to its critical effects on followers' safety compliance behavior, far fewer steps have been taken to study the safety impact of laissez-faire leadership. Objective: This study examines the relationships between safety-specific leader reward and punishment omission (laissez-faire leadership) and followers' safety compliance, and the mediations of safety-specific distributive justice and role ambiguity. Methods: On a two-wave online survey of 307 workers from high-risk enterprises in China, these relationships were tested by structural equations modeling and bootstrapping procedures. Results: Findings show that safety-specific leader reward omission was negatively associated with followers' safety compliance through the mediating effects of safety-specific distributive justice and role ambiguity. Safety-specific leader punishment omission was also negatively associated with followers' safety compliance through the mediating effect of safety-specific role ambiguity, while safety-specific distributive justice was an insignificant mediator. Originality: The study addresses and closes more gaps by explaining how two contextualized laissez-faire leadership measures relate to followers' safety behaviors, following the contextualization and matching principles between predictors, mediators and criteria, and by revealing two mechanisms behind the detrimental effects of laissez-faire leadership on safety outcomes.

RESUMO

Meranzin hydrate (MH) is a frequently used antidepressant drug in China; however it underlying mechanism remains unknown. In this study, we aimed to explore whether MH could ameliorate depression-like behavior in rats by regulating the competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) network. We developed a depression-like rat model using an unpredictable chronic mild stress (UCMS) protocol, and the differentially expressed lncRNAs, miRNAs, and mRNAs were identified between the model group and MH group. Then, a ceRNA network responding to MH treatment was constructed by their corresponding relationships in the databases. Finally, Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses were conducted to explore molecular mechanisms associated with MH treatment. The study indicated that rats in the model group showed loss of weight and deteriorated behavior in behavior tests compared with rats in the normal group. A total of 826 lncRNAs, 121 miRNAs, and 954 mRNAs were differentially expressed in the hippocampus of UCMS rats after MH treatment. In addition, 13 miRNAs were selected, and 12 of them were validated in the hippocampus by qRT-PCR. Then, we predicted upstream lncRNAs and downstream mRNAs of the validated miRNAs and interacted with the results of microarrays. Eventually, a lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA regulatory network, responding to MH treatment, was constructed based on the 314 lncRNAs, 11 miRNAs, and 221 mRNAs. KEGG pathways suggested that these genes may be highly related to Wnt signaling, axon guidance, and MAPK signaling pathways. All these results suggest that MH may be a potential representative compound for the treatment of depression, and its mechanism of action is related to the ceRNA modification.
