Sulfate (SO42-) is an essential chemical species in atmospheric aerosols and plays an influential role in their physical-chemical characteristics. The mechanisms of secondary SO42- aerosol have been intensively studied in air-polluted cities. However, few studies have focused on cities with good air quality. One-year PM2.5 samples were collected in the tropical island city of Haikou, and water-soluble inorganic ions, as well as water-soluble Fe and Mn, were analyzed. The results showed that non-sea-salt SO42- (nss-SO42-) was the dominant species of water-soluble inorganic ions, accounting for 40-57% of the total water-soluble inorganic ions in PM2.5 in Haikou. The S(IV)+H2O2 pathway was the main formation pathway for secondary SO42- in wintertime in Haikou, contributing to 57% of secondary SO42- formation. By contrast, 54% of secondary SO42- was produced by the S(IV)+Fe×Mn pathway in summer. In spring and autumn, the S(IV)+H2O2, S(IV)+Fe×Mn, and S(IV)+NO2 pathways contributed equally to secondary SO42- formation. The ionic strength was the controlling parameter for the S(IV)+NO2 pathway, while pH was identified as a key factor that mediates the S(IV)+H2O2 and S(IV)+Fe×Mn pathways to produce secondary SO42-. This study contributes to our understanding of secondary SO42- production under low PM2.5 concentrations but high SO42- percentages.

Echinocandins like anidulafungin are first-line therapies for candidemia and invasive candidiasis, but their dosing may be suboptimal in obese patients. Our objective was to quantify anidulafungin exposure in a cohort of adults across a wide body size range to test if body size affects anidulafungin pharmacokinetics (PK). We enrolled 20 adults between the ages of 18 and 80 years, with an equal distribution of patients above and below a body mass index of 30 kg/m2. A single 100-mg dose of anidulafungin was administered, followed by intensive sampling over 72 h. Population PK analysis was used to identify and compare covariates of anidulafungin PK parameters. Monte Carlo simulations were performed to compute the probability of target attainment (PTA) based on alternative dosing regimens. Participants (45% males) had a median (range) age of 45 (21-78) years and a median (range) weight of 82.7 (42.4-208.3) kg. The observed median (range) of AUC0-∞ was 106.4 (51.9, 138.4) mg∙h/L. Lean body weight (LBW) and adjusted body weight (AdjBW) were more influential than weight as covariates of anidulafungin PK parameters. The conventional 100 mg daily maintenance is predicted to have a PTA below 90% in adults with an LBW > 55 kg or an AdjBW > 75 kg. A daily maintenance dose of 150-200 mg is predicted in these heavier adults. Anidulafungin AUC0-∞ declines with increasing body size. A higher maintenance dose will increase the PTA compared to the current approach in obese patients.

Importance: There were over 45 000 suicides in the US in 2020, making suicide the 12th leading cause of death. If social vulnerability is associated with suicide rates, targeted interventions for at-risk segments of the population may reduce US suicide rates. Objective: To determine the association between social vulnerability and suicide in adults. Design, Setting, and Participants: This cohort study analyzed 2 county-level social vulnerability measures (the Social Vulnerability Index [SVI] and the Social Vulnerability Metric [SVM]) and US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-reported county-level suicides from 2016 to 2020. Data were analyzed November and December 2022. Exposures: County-level variability in social vulnerability. Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary outcome measure was number of county-level adult suicides from 2016 to 2020, offset by county adult population during those years. The association between social vulnerability (measured using the SVI and the newly created SVM for 2018) and suicide was modeled using a bayesian-censored Poisson regression model to account for the CDC's suppression of county-level suicide counts of less than 10, adjusted for age, racial and ethnic minority, and urban-rural county characteristics. Results: From 2016 to 2020, there were a total of 222 018 suicides in 3141 counties. Comparing the least socially vulnerable (0% to 10%) to the most socially vulnerable (90% to 100%) counties, there was a 56% increase in suicide rate (17.3 per 100 000 persons to 27.0 per 100 000 persons) as measured by the SVI (incidence rate ratio, 1.56; 95% credible interval, 1.51-1.60) and an 82% increase in suicide rate (13.8 per 100 000 persons to 25.1 per 100 000 persons) as measured by the SVM (incidence rate ratio, 1.82; 95% credible interval, 1.72-1.92). Conclusions and Relevance: This cohort study found that social vulnerability had a direct association with risk for adult suicide. Reducing social vulnerability may lead to life-saving reduction in the rate of suicide.

OBJECTIVE: Antineoplastic drugs (ADs) are widely used in clinical practice and have been demonstrated to be effective in treating malignant tumors. However, they carry a risk of cytogenotoxicity for healthcare workers. Studies have reported that genotoxic biomarkers can be applied to assess the occupational health status of healthcare workers at an early stage, but results of different studies are variable. The objectives of the review were examine the association between long-term exposure to ADs and cytogenetic damage to healthcare workers. METHODS: We systematically reviewed studies between 2005 and 2021 using PubMed, Embase and Web of Science databases that used cytogenetic biomarkers to assess occupational exposure to ADs in healthcare workers. We used RevMan5.4 to analyze the tail length parameters of the DNA, frequency of the chromosomal aberrations, sister chromatid exchanges and micronuclei. A total of 16 studies were included in our study. The studies evaluate the quality of the literature through the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. RESULTS: The results revealed that under the random-effects model, the estimated standard deviation was 2.37 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.92-3.81, P = 0.001) for the tail length parameters of the DNA, 1.48 (95% CI 0.71-2.25, P = 0.0002) for the frequency of chromosomal aberrations, 1.74 (95% CI 0.49-2.99, P = 0.006) for the frequency of sister chromatid exchanges and 1.64 (95% CI 0.83-2.45, P < 0.0001) for the frequency of micronuclei. CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that there is a significant association between occupational exposure to ADs and cytogenetic damage, to which healthcare workers should be alerted.

Natural sources, such as soil and wind-erosion dust (SWD), biomass open burning (BOB), sea salt spray (SSAS) and biogenic source (BIO), are major contributors to atmospheric emissions of trace elements (TEs) globally. In this study, we used a comprehensive approach to account for area-, production- and biofuel consumption-based emission factor calculation methods, and thus developed an integrated high-resolution emission inventory for 15 types of TEs (As, B, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, V and Zn) originated from natural sources in China for the year 2015. The results show that national emissions of TEs in 2015 range from 7.45 tons (Hg) to 1, 400 tons (Zn) except for the extremely high emissions of Mn (10, 677 tons). SWD and BIO are identified as the top two source contributors, accounting for approximately 67.7% and 26.1% of the total emissions, respectively. Absolute emissions of TEs from natural sources are high in the Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia and Tibet autonomous regions with large areas of bare soil and desert. However, emission intensity of TEs per unit area in the Southern provinces of China is higher than those in Northern China and Southwestern China, with the Yunnan and Sichuan provinces displaying the highest emission intensity. Our results suggest that controlling SWD can play a significant role in reducing fugitive particulate matter and the associated emissions of TEs from natural sources in China; and desertification control is particularly critical in the Northwest provinces where the majority of deserts are located.

Chinese coal-fired power plants (CFPPs) are experiencing large-scale and rapid retrofitting of ultralow emission (ULE), causing significant changes in emission level of particulate matter (PM) from CFPPs. In this study, based on coal ash mass balance over the whole process, an integrated emission factors (EFs) database of three size-fractioned particulate matters (PM2.5, PM10, and PMtotal) for CFPPs is constructed, which covers almost all typical ULE technical routes installed in CFPPs. To verify the reliability of PM EFs established in this study, we compare those with related results based on field tests. Overall, the gaps in the EFs of PM2.5, PM10, and PMtotal obtained by the two methods are not outrageous within a reasonable range. By combined with the refined size-fractioned PM EFs and unit-based activity level database, a detailed high-resolution emission inventory of PM2.5, PM10, and PMtotal from Chinese CFPPs in 2017 is established, with the corresponding total emissions of 143, 207, and 267 kt, respectively. Our estimation of PMtotal emission is comparable to the official statistics announced by China Electricity Council (CEC), which further demonstrates the reliability of PM EFs constructed in this study. Moreover, potential reductions of PM from CFPPs at two stages before and after 2017 are assessed under three application scenarios of major ULE technical routes. We forecast the final annual emissions of PM2.5, PM10, and PMtotal until 2020 will be reduced further, which fall within the range of 86-111 kt, 120-157 kt, and 142-184 kt, respectively, if all CFPPs achieve ULE requirements under the three scenarios. We believe our integrated database of PM EFs of CFPPs has good universality, and the forecast results will be helpful for policy guidance of ULE technologies, emissions inventory compilation, and regional air quality simulation and management.
