RESUMO

The use of sensory neurons and assessment of neurite outgrowth in vitro is an important part of understanding neuronal development and plasticity. Cultures of rat dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons provide quantitative results very quickly and, when grown on growth promoting or inhibitory substrates, can be utilized to study axonal growth, neurotrophic dependence, and structure and function of growth cones. Since we are interested in axon regeneration and targeting, we have sought to promote neurite outgrowth by refining the techniques of growing DRG neurons in culture. This chapter describes detailed methods for the dissection and purification of DRG neurons and quantitative assessment of neurite on promoting or inhibitory substrates.

This paper pioneers to investigate the endowment effect in the European Union mission Trading Scheme (EU ETS) as well as the impacts of trading experience and compliance pressure on the endowment effect. This study is based on the complete transaction records of the market. In the data set, the records of two consecutive reverse transactions from a same emitting company are selected. The lowest price that the buyer is willing to pay (WTP) and the maximum price the seller is willing to accept (WTA) are evaluated by excluding their risk cost that is used to avoid short-term fluctuations in the price. By distinguishing the difference between WTA and WTP, and long-term fluctuations in the prices during the two transactions, the trader's endowment effect can be quantitively assessed. The results show that the degree of endowment effect of traders follows the trading experience. In addition, since the EU ETS is a cap-and-trade market, the traders face different levels of compliance pressure; when the pressure of the emission companies increases, the degree of endowment effect will also decrease.

BACKGROUND: Recognized as the gold-standard ideal fare, human milk has a unique composition that meets infants' needs throughout development. Endocannabinoids and endocannabinoid-like compounds [endocannabinoid metabolome (ECM)] are endogenous lipid mediators derived from long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. Based on animal models, it has been proposed that endocannabinoid arachidonoyl glycerol (AG) plays a role in establishing the suckling response during lactation. In addition, endocannabinoid ethanolamides have been shown to stimulate food intake. The mechanisms of action and the role of the ECM in human milk are not fully understood. OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to characterize and quantify the ECM in human milk samples from an underserved population in Guatemala. METHODS: Human milk samples were collected from lactating women (n = 26) for ECM characterization and quantification. Samples were taken at 3 different time points between 4 and 6 mo of lactation during maternal fasting. Human milk samples were analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Identified members of the ECM were: arachidonoyl ethanolamide, palmitoyl ethanolamide (PEA), oleoyl ethanolamide, docosahexaenoyl ethanolamide, eicoapentaenoyl ethanolamide, eicosenoyl ethanolamide, AG, palmitoyl glycerol, oleoyl glycerol, docosahexaenoyl glycerol, eicosapentaenoyl glycerol, eicosenoyl glycerol, arachidonic acid (ARA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). RESULTS: Overall, concentrations in the ethanolamide group were lower than the glycerols. A time effect was observed for ARA, DHA, EPA, and PEA across the 3 time points (P ≤ 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our study identified the ECM in mature human milk and provides the first report for a population with health disparities within a developing country. The few studies available have been conducted in developed countries. Hypotheses for future studies can be developed based on this study's data to help elucidate specific roles for members of the ECM and how this biological system modulates infant health and development.

AIMS: To identify the reasons for poor uptake of cataract surgery in a program of outreach screening and low-cost surgery in Pucheng County, a rural area in northwestern China. METHODS: Detailed interviews with a semi-structured questionnaire were conducted by telephone or face-to-face for participants who had been advised to attend a low-cost cataract surgery program but did not schedule the surgery within 3 months after the initial screening. RESULTS: Among 432 eligible subjects, 355 (82.2%) were interviewed (mean age 70.6 ± 6.6 years, 73.8% female). A total of 138 subjects (38.9%) were interviewed by phone and 217 (61.1%) were interviewed face-to-face. Lack of family support (n = 106, 29.9%) and failure to understand the need for surgery (n = 96, 27.0%) were the two main reasons for not undergoing cataract surgery. Other factors included fear of surgery (n = 62, 17.5%), lack of faith in doctors (n = 36, 10.1%), financial constraints (n = 25, 7.0%) and lack of transportation (n = 4, 1.1%). CONCLUSION: The principal barriers to low-cost cataract surgery uptake in rural China included lack of family support and failure to understand the need for surgery. Education targeting entire families to eliminate these barriers and development of community support systems at the family level are required to achieve greater uptake of low-cost cataract surgery programs in rural China.
