RESUMO

Deep dewatering of Waste Activated Sludge (WAS) through mechanical processes remains inefficient, primarily due to the formation of a stable hydrogen bonding network between the biopolymers and water, which consequently leads to significant water trapped by Extracellular Polymeric Substances (EPS). In this study, a novel and recyclable treatment for WAS based on Ionic Liquids (ILs) was established, named IL-biphasic aqueous system (IL-ABS) treatment. Specifically, the IL-ABS formed in WAS facilitated rapid and efficient in-situ deep dewatering while concurrently recovering hydroxyapatite. The water content decreased from an initial 98.27 % to 65.35 % with IL-ABS, formed by 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (BmimBr) and K3PO4 synthesized from waste H3PO4. Moreover, the recycled BmimBr maintaining the water content of the dewatered sludge consistently between 65.61 % and 67.25 % across five cycles, exhibited remarkable reproducibility. Through three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix, lactate dehydrogenase analyses and confocal laser scanning microscopy, the high concentration of BmimBr in the upper phase effectively disrupted the cells and EPS, which exposed protein and polysaccharide on the EPS surface. Subsequently, the K3PO4 in the lower phase led to an enhanced salting-out effect in WAS. Furthermore, FT-IR analysis revealed that K3PO4 disrupted the original hydrogen bonds between EPS and water. Then, BmimBr formed numerous hydrogen bonds with the sludge flocs, leading to deep dewatering and agglomeration of the sludge flocs during the unique phase separation process of IL-ABS. Notably, sludge-derived hydroxyapatite product exhibited remarkable adsorption capacity for prevalent heavy metal contaminants such as Pb2+, Cd2+ and Cu2+, with efficiencies comparable to those of commercial hydroxyapatite, thereby achieving the resource utilization of waste H3PO4. Moreover, economic calculations demonstrated the suitability of this novel treatment. This innovative treatment exhibits potential for practical applications in the non-mechanical deep dewatering of WAS.

RESUMO

Assessment of muscle function is an essential indicator for estimating elderly health, evaluating motor function, and instructing rehabilitation training, which also sets urgent requirements for mechanical sensors with superior quantification, accuracy, and reliability. To overcome the rigidity and vulnerability of traditional metallic electrodes, we synthesize an ionic hydrogel with large deformation tolerance and fast self-healing ability. And we propose a stretchable, self-healing, and skin-mounted (Triple S) active sensor (TSAS) based on the principles of electrostatic induction and electrostatic coupling. The skin modulus-matched TSAS provides outstanding sensing properties: maximum output voltage of 78.44 V, minimal detection limit of 0.2 mN, fast response time of 1.03 ms, high signal-to-noise ratio and excellent long-term service stability. In training of arm muscle, the functional signals of biceps and triceps brachii muscles as well as the joint dexterity of bending angle can be acquired simultaneously through TSAS. The signal can also be sent wirelessly to a terminal for analysis. With the characteristics of high sensitivity, reliability, convenience, and low-cost, TSAS shows its potential to be the next-generation procedure for real-time assessment of muscle function and rehabilitation training.

RESUMO

A low-cost and multi-channel smartphone-based spectrometer was developed for LIBS. As the CMOS detector is two-dimensional, simultaneous multichannel detection was achieved by coupling a linear array of fibres for light collection. Thus, besides the atomic information, the spectral images containing the propagation and spatial distribution characters of a laser induced plasma plume could be recorded. With these additional features, accurate rock type prediction was achieved by processing the raw data directly through a deep learning model.

RESUMO

In this paper, nutrient elements (N and P), heavy metals (Pb, Cu, Zn, Cd, Cr, Co, Ni, and Sn), and grain size in surface sediments of Baiyangdian Lake, northern China, are studied. We also analyze the spatial variation in elemental characteristics and undertaken a pollution risk assessment. By combining data with information on the river sediment characteristics, we use multivariate statistical methods to reveal the sources and variation of elements in sediments. The results showed that the average contents of heavy metals in surface sediments from the lake and associated rivers were higher than background values. Within the area of the lake, nutrient elements are relatively high in the northwest region but low in the southeast region, and heavy metals are relatively high in the middle of the lake but low in the southern and northern areas. The sequence of comprehensive pollution index (I) in sediments was Cd > Pb > Cr > Cu=Zn > Ni > Sn > Co, with Cd being assessed as severe pollution and other elements as moderate pollution, although severe pollution of Cr was found in the Zaolinzhuang area. The order of potential ecological risk coefficients (Eri) was determined as Cd > Pb > Cu > Cr > Ni > Zn, whereby Cd was associated with a strong potential ecological risk (except in the Caiputai area) and other elements were associated with a slight potential ecological risk. Differences in the lake sediment texture were found to be slight. Non-point source pollution after rivers flow into the lake was determined as the main reason for the spatial variation of elements in the surface sediments of Baiyangdian Lake, although point source pollution in the villages surrounding the lake should not be ignored, especially with respect to N, P, Pb, and Cr.

RESUMO

Nanogenerator (triboelectric nanogenerator and piezoelectric nanogenerator) has experienced a rapid development since it was proposed. This technique can covert various mechanical energies into electric energy, including human motion energy, wind energy, acoustic energy and ocean energy. The converted electricity can be used for health monitoring and physiological function regulation, such as pulse detection, bioelectrical stimulation and cardiac pacing. This review summarizes the structure, working mechanism, output performance of nanogenerator and its latest progress in circulatory system, nervous system, biological tissue, sleep and rescue system. Additionally, a further analysis was also made on the application challenge of nanogenerator in clinical treatment. In the future, nanogenerator is expected to be an auxiliary power source, or even to replace battery to power medical electronic device and realize the self-powered health monitoring and physiological function regulation of human body.

RESUMO

Currently, studies are increasingly focusing on the cytotoxic effects of anticancer drugs. Such investigations urgently warrant the assessment of single-cell viability. Here, we developed a novel method for quantifying single-cell viability with high selectivity by resonance Raman scattering. We report on this powerful tool that will allow researchers to study cellular metabolism at the level of a single cell.

RESUMO

Neutrons scatter quasielastically from stochastic, diffusive processes, such as overdamped vibrations, localized diffusion and transitions between energy minima. In biological systems, such as proteins and membranes, these relaxation processes are of considerable physical interest. We review here recent methodological advances and applications of quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) in biology, concentrating on the role of molecular dynamics simulation in generating data with which neutron profiles can be unambiguously interpreted. We examine the use of massively-parallel computers in calculating scattering functions, and the application of Markov state modeling. The decomposition of MD-derived neutron dynamic susceptibilities is described, and the use of this in combination with NMR spectroscopy. We discuss dynamics at very long times, including approximations to the infinite time mean-square displacement and nonequilibrium aspects of single-protein dynamics. Finally, we examine how neutron scattering and MD can be combined to provide information on lipid nanodomains. RESUMO

This study investigated the mental health status of medical students in China, and analyzed the influencing factors in order to provide evidence for mental health education for medical students. A stratified cluster sampling method was used to recruit medical students from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China. The questionnaire survey on general information and Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90) were used for investigation and analysis. The results showed among the 1137 valid questionnaires, 278 (24.45%) participants had SCL-90 score ≥ 160. The top three mental problems of medical students were obsessive-compulsive disorder, interpersonal sensitivity and depression in terms of the factor score ≥ 2.5 and the number of participants who reflected on the diseases. The third-year medical students had the worst mental health status, and fifth-year medical students had the best mental health status. Students from rural area had more psychological problems than those from urban area; furthermore, students with high professional satisfaction, those who were the single child of the family, non-poor students, and those whose parents had high education level had better mental health status. It was concluded that the mental health of medical students is not optimistic in China. Medical students have some mental health problems of different degrees. Factors that influence the mental health of medical students include academic pressure, professional satisfaction level and family environment.
