BACKGROUND: As the expansion of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits and pandemic emergency assistance programs ended in late 2021, little is known about subsequent trends in food insufficiency (FI) among households with children. OBJECTIVES: This research examined the association between SNAP participation and FI among households with children in the United States, particularly non-Hispanic Black (Black) and Hispanic households. METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis used Household Pulse Survey data collected from December 2021 to May 2022. Spatial analysis was conducted to visualize FI and SNAP participation rates across 50 states. With state SNAP policy rules as exogenous instruments and sociodemographic factors as control variables, 2-stage probit models were utilized to assess the SNAP and FI association among all (n = 135,074), Black (n = 13,940), and Hispanic households with children (n = 17,869). RESULTS: Approximately 13.9% [95% confidence interval (CI): 13.85%, 13.99%] of households experienced FI, and 20.4% (CI: 20.35%, 20.51%) received SNAP benefits. Among Black and Hispanic households, higher rates were observed, with 23.3% (CI: 23.12%, 23.4%) and 20.8% (CI: 20.61%, 20.95%) experiencing FI and 36.3% (CI: 36.1%, 36.5%) and 26.9% (CI: 26.61%, 27.13%) receiving SNAP benefits. These rates varied across states, ranging from 8% (Utah) to 21.1% (Mississippi) for FI and from 8.8% (Utah) to 32.7% (New Mexico) for SNAP participation. SNAP participants demonstrated a 12% lower likelihood of FI than nonparticipants (CI: -0.18, -0.05, P < 0.001). Among Black households, SNAP participants had a 29% lower likelihood of FI than nonparticipants (CI: -0.54, -0.03, P < 0.001). However, SNAP participation was not significant among Hispanic households (P = 0.99), nor did it narrow the FI gap between Hispanic and non-Hispanic households (P = 0.22). CONCLUSIONS: SNAP participation was associated with lower levels of FI among households with children, particularly for Black households. However, there was no significant association between SNAP participation and FI among Hispanic households with children.

Species distribution monitoring and biomass assessment are crucial for fishery management and resource conservation. However, traditional methods such as motor trawling are costly and less effective than the novel environmental DNA (eDNA) approach. This study employs eDNA approach to investigate horizontal and vertical distributions of small yellow croaker (Larimichthys polyactis), an economically important species, in the East China Sea. The analysis of 171 eDNA samples collected from 44 stations using the species-specific primers and Taqman probe suggests a presence of small yellow croaker at 28 sampling layers in 44 stations. Significant differences in croaker eDNA concentrations were revealed among sampling stations and layers, consistent with previous findings through motor-trawl capture offshore and nearshore ichthyoplakton surveys, indicating small yellow croaker exhibits strong regional distribution and layer preference. In addition, we found a high eDNA concentration of small yellow croaker in the surface waters beyond the motor-trawl prohibition line, which confirms spawning grounds have been expanded from nearshore to offshore areas. Such expansion of spawning grounds could be a response by small yellow croaker to stressors such as overfishing, climate change, and nearshore environment contamination. To identify environmental variables potentially associated with small yellow croaker presence and absence, we conducted a correlation analysis between eDNA concentration and environmental variables, and the results provide a guideline for further investigation of fishery resources in the future. In conclusion, this study demonstrates the power of the eDNA approach in monitoring small yellow croaker at extensive geographic scales. The developed protocols and the findings are expected to assist in long-term monitoring and protection programs and benefit sustainable fishery in small yellow croaker.

The evolution of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) resistance provides a useful pathway for the study of fitness trade-offs associated with stress adaptation. In a previous study, we used cDNA-amplification fragment length polymorphism (cDNA-ALFP) analysis to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in Cry1Ac-susceptible (96S) and -resistant (Bt-R) Helicoverpa armigera larvae. Among these DEGs, a death-associated LIM-only protein (HaDALP) was identified. In the current study, the full-length cDNA encoding HaDALP was cloned using rapid amplification of cDNA ends according to an expressed sequence tag derived from the previous cDNA-ALFP analysis. HaDALP expression patterns indicated that this gene was differentially expressed in tissues and stages and was highest in the midgut and epidermis of the 5th instar larvae. It is up-regulated in Cry1Ac-resistant H. armigera larvae. Fitness parameters, such as larval and pupal weight, pupal duration, and survival rate, which are the most sensitive indicators, were evaluated after HaDALP knockdown or feeding of the HaDALP protein in vivo. Our findings suggested that up-regulation of HaDALP might be related to Cry1Ac resistance and an adaption to Bt toxins.
