BACKGROUND: Many studies have investigated the transfer of skills between laparoscopic and robot-assisted surgery (RAS). These studies have considered time, error, and clinical outcomes in the assessment of skill transfer. However, little is known about the specific operations of the surgeon. Clutch control use is an important skill in RAS. Therefore, the present study aimed to propose a novel objective algorithm based on computer vision that can automatically evaluate a surgeon's clutch use. Additionally, the study aimed to evaluate the correlation between clutch metrics and surgical skill on different surgical robot platforms. METHODS: The robotic surgery training center of Wuhan University trained 30 laparoscopic surgeons as the study group between 2023 and 2024. Laparoscopic surgeons were trained by combining robotic simulator exercises and RAS animal experiments. During the training, video and hand movement data were collected. Hand movements identified by a skin-color model were combined with labeling information to classify clutch use. The metrics were validated on different robotic platforms (dv-Trainer, EDGE MP1000, Toumai™ MT1000, and DaVinci Xi system) and among surgeons with different surgical skill levels. RESULTS: On the robotic simulator, clutch accuracy in the expert group was significantly higher than in the study group for all tasks. No significant differences were observed in the number of clutches between the expert and study groups. In the RAS experiment, the number of clutches decreased significantly for both study and expert groups. The accuracy was maintained at a high level in the expert group but decreased rapidly in the study group. CONCLUSIONS: We proposed a new objective assessment of surgical skills, clutch use metrics, in cross-platform RAS. Additionally, we verified that the metrics significantly correlated with the surgical skill levels of the surgeons.

BACKGROUND: The impact of global warming on health due to climate change is increasingly studied, but the global burden of self-harm and interpersonal violence attributable to high temperature is still limited. This study aimed to systematically assess the burden of self-harm and interpersonal violence attributable to high temperature globally or by region and climate zone from 1990 to 2019. METHODS: We obtained the global, regional, and national deaths, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), age-standardized mortality rates (ASMR), and age-standardized disability-adjusted life year rates (ASDR) of self-harm and interpersonal violence due to high temperature from 1990 to 2019 through the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2019. The burden of self-harm and interpersonal violence due to high temperature was estimated by age, sex, climate zone, the socio-demographic index (SDI), and the healthcare access and quality index (HAQ). Average annual percentage changes (AAPCs) in ASMR and ASDR were calculated for 1990-2019 using the Joinpoint model. RESULTS: From 1990 to 2019, the global deaths and DALYs related to self-harm and interpersonal violence due to high temperature increased from 20,002 (95% UI, 9243 to 41,928) and 1,107,216 (95% UI, 512,062 to 2,319,477) to 26,459 (95% UI, 13,574 to 47,265) and 1,382,487 (95% UI, 722,060 to 2,474,441), respectively. However, the ASMR and ASDR showed varying degrees of decreasing trends, with decreases of 13.36% and 12.66%, respectively. The ASMR was high and declining in low and low-middle SDI regions, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. In addition, SDI and HAQ index were negatively correlated with ASMR in 204 countries and regions. CONCLUSIONS: The global burden of self-harm and interpersonal violence attributed to high temperature has decreased over the past 30 years, but the number of deaths and DALYs continues to rise. Climate change continues to make heat stress a significant risk factor for self-harm and interpersonal violence worldwide.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to lead (Pb) is associated with an increased risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, limited studies explored the global burden of CKD attributable to Pb exposure, especially in countries with different development levels. This study aimed to comprehensively evaluate the temporal and spatial trend in the disease burden of CKD attributable to Pb exposure in 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2019. METHODS: We used the data from Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2019 to estimate annual deaths, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), age-standardized mortality rates (ASMR), and age-standardized DALYs rate (ASDR) of CKD attributable to Pb exposure. The annual average percentage change (AAPCs) was calculated using the Joinpoint model to evaluate the changing trend of CKD ASMR and ASDR attributable to Pb exposure from 1990 to 2019. Meanwhile, age-period-cohort (APC) model was used to assess changes in the mortality of CKD attributable to Pb exposure from 1990 to 2019. RESULTS: Global ASMR for CKD attributable to Pb exposure trended upward from 1990 to 2019. ASMR and ASDR were the highest in low and low-middle SDI regions. With the APC model, we found that global mortality rates for CKD attributable to Pb exposure increased with age. The global period rate ratio showed the highest value in 2000-2004 and the lowest in 2015-2019, while the global cohort rate ratio showed the highest value in 1941-1949 and the lowest during 1986-1994. CONCLUSIONS: From 1990 to 2019, the global burden of CKD attributable to Pb exposure increased globally, especially in low and low-middle SDI regions, as well as the elderly. Pb exposure is still a great threat to the global burden of CKD, and the implementation of effective prevention measures to reduce Pb exposure in the environment should be continually strengthened.

Exploring coordinated pathways that can promote not only the sustainable development of the industrial economy but also air quality is of great significance for the prevention and control of air pollution in China. Currently, the joint development pathways of the industrial economy-environment nexus remain unclear and poorly evaluated. In this study, we proposed a comprehensive performance evaluation combining objective and subjective weighting to identify industrial enterprises' economic-environment nexus benefits. It would be one of the most important steps to explore the coordinated pathways. Based on data envelopment analysis (DEA), the proposed method integrated with the index integration was used to evaluate the comprehensive performances of 41 industrial sectors in China's 13th five-year plan (2016-2020). Evaluation results showed that the comprehensive performances of the economy-environment nexus of the industrial sectors varied significantly, with the five-year average comprehensive technical efficiency (TE) of 0.11-1. Overall, the best two performances were realized by the industries of equipment manufacturing and living consumption, whereas the worst one belonged to the industry of bulk raw materials, with average comprehensive TE values of 0.50, 0.43, and 0.19, respectively. The results of the quantitative evaluation were consistent with those of the qualitative analysis in terms of the developmental status of the industrial sectors. According to the analyses of pure technical efficiency and scale effect, the proposed method identified the industrial sectors with the highest developmental value and with the highest need to control air pollution. Compared with those of the original DEA model, the results of the proposed method showed pronounced differences in terms of the performances of industrial sectors with high energy consumption and high particulate matter (PM) emissions and with low energy consumption and low PM emissions. The proposed evaluation method combining the weighting was suitable for identifying the comprehensive performance of the industrial economy-environment nexus and provides the basis for the prevention and control of air pollution.

BACKGROUND: There are 3 widely used preoperative radiotherapy (RT) procedures in rectal cancer treatment including long-course RT (LRT), short-course RT with delayed surgery (SRTW), and short-course RT with immediate surgery (SRT). However, further evidence is required to determine which treatment option results in more optimal patient survival. METHODS: This Swedish Colorectal Cancer Registry-based retrospective study of real-world data included 7766 stage I-III rectal cancer patients, of which 2982, 1089, 763, and 2932 patients received no RT (NRT), LRT, SRTW, and SRT, respectively. The Kaplan-Meier survival curve and Cox proportional hazard multivariate model were used to identify potential risk factors and to examine the independent association of RT with patient survival after adjusting for baseline confounding factors. RESULTS: RT effects on survival differed by age and clinical T stage (cT) subgroups. Subsequent survival analysis by age and cT subgroups confirmed that patients ≥70 years old with cT4 benefited from any RT (P < .001, NRT as reference) and equally from any RT (P > .05 pairwise between RTs). In contrast, for cT3 patients ≥70 years, SRT and LRT were associated with better survival than SRTW (P < .001). In patients <70 years, LRT and SRTW had superior survival benefits in cT4 patients but inferior to SRT (P < .001); SRT was the only effective treatment in the cT3N+ subgroup (P = .032); patients with cT3N0 and <70 years did not benefit from any RT. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that preoperative RT strategies may have varying effects on the survival of rectal cancer patients, depending on their age and clinical stage.

With the rapidly changing climate, assessing the global trends of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) attributed to high and low temperatures in different climate zones and under varying socio-demographic levels is crucial for regulations, preparation, intervention, and clinical practice for CVD. Our study included 204 countries with global CVD data ranging from 1990 to 2019. We obtained the age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR); disability-adjusted life rate of CVD attributed to high, low, and non-optimal temperatures; and socio-demographic index (SDI) data from the Global Health Data Exchange. We also downloaded the temperature data from the Climatic Research Unit. These 204 countries were divided into five climate zones and five SDI levels according to the annual average temperature data and SDI in 2019. The temporal trends of CVD burden attributed to high, low, and non-optimal temperatures were estimated by using the cubic regression spline and the generalized additive mixed model (GAMM). The total burden of temperature-related CVD has been declining in the last 30 years. However, the burden of CVD attributed to high temperature showed an increasing trend. Among different climate regions, the ASMRs of CVD attributed to high temperature were the highest in the tropical regions, followed by subtropical regions, and the lowest in the boreal regions. In the past 30 years, the burden of CVD attributed to high temperatures has shown a significant increasing trend, while declining trends are observed for non-optimal and low temperatures. The CVD burden attributed to high temperatures is particularly pronounced in warmer and low-SDI regions with an increasing trend of CVD burden due to high temperature.

RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common among hospitalized children and is associated with increased hospital length of stay and costs. However, there are limited data on postdischarge health care utilization after AKI hospitalization. Our objectives were to evaluate health care utilization and physician follow-up patterns after dialysis-treated AKI in a pediatric population. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study, using provincial health administrative databases. SETTING & PARTICIPANTS: All children (0-18 years) hospitalized between 1996 and 2017 in Ontario, Canada. Excluded individuals comprised non-Ontario residents; those with metabolic disorders or poisoning; and those who received dialysis or kidney transplant before admission, a kidney transplant by 104 days after discharge, or were receiving dialysis 76-104 days from dialysis start date. EXPOSURE: Episodes of dialysis-treated AKI, identified using validated health administrative codes. AKI survivors were matched to 4 hospitalized controls without dialysis-treated AKI by age, sex, and admission year. OUTCOME: Our primary outcome was postdischarge hospitalizations, emergency department visits, and outpatient physician visits. Secondary outcomes included outpatient visits by physician type and composite health care costs. ANALYTICAL APPROACH: Proportions with≥1 event and rates (per 1,000 person-years). Total and median composite health care costs. Adjusted rate ratios using negative binomial regression models. RESULTS: We included 1,688 pediatric dialysis-treated AKI survivors and 6,752 matched controls. Dialysis-treated AKI survivors had higher rehospitalization and emergency department visit rates during the analyzed follow-up periods (0-1, 0-5, and 0-10 years postdischarge, and throughout follow-up), and higher outpatient visit rates in the 0-1-year follow-up period. The overall adjusted rate ratio for rehospitalization was 1.46 (95% CI, 1.25-1.69; P<0.0001) and for outpatient visits was 1.16 (95% CI, 1.09-1.23; P=0.01). Dialysis-treated AKI survivors also had higher health care costs. Nephrologist follow-up was infrequent among dialysis-treated AKI survivors (18.6% by 1 year postdischarge). LIMITATIONS: Potential miscoding of study exposures or outcomes. Residual uncontrolled confounding. Data for health care costs and emergency department visits was unavailable before 2006 and 2001, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Dialysis-treated AKI survivors had greater postdischarge health care utilization and costs versus hospitalized controls. Strategies are needed to improve follow-up care for children after dialysis-treated AKI to prevent long-term complications.

This study aimed to explore the spatial and temporal trends of lung cancer burden attributable to residential radon exposure at the global, regional, and national levels. Based on the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2019, we collected the age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) and age-standardized disability-adjusted life rate (ASDR) of lung cancer attributable to residential radon exposure from 1990 to 2019. The Joinpoint model was used to calculate the annual average percentage change (AAPC) to evaluate the trend of ASMR and ASDR from 1990 to 2019. The locally weighted regression (LOESS) was used to estimate the relationship of the socio-demographic index (SDI) with ASMR and ASDR. In 2019, the global ASMR and ASDR for lung cancer attributable to residential radon exposure were 1.03 (95% CI: 0.20, 2.00) and 22.66 (95% CI: 4.49, 43.94) per 100 000 population, which were 15.6% and 23.0% lower than in 1990, respectively. According to the estimation, we found the lung cancer burden attributable to residential radon exposure declined significantly in high and high-middle SDI regions, but substantially increased in middle and low-middle SDI regions from 1990 to 2019. Across age and sex, the highest burden of lung cancer attributable to residential radon exposure was found in males and elderly groups. In conclusion, the global burden of lung cancer attributable to residential radon exposure showed a declining trend from 1990 to 2019, but a relatively large increase was found in the middle SDI regions. In 2019, the burden of lung cancer attributable to residential radon exposure remained high, particularly in males, the elderly, and high-middle SDI regions compared with other groups.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the impact of the Intercontinental Terminals Company (ITC) fire and COVID-19 on airborne particulate matter (PM) concentrations and the PM disproportionally affecting communities in Houston using low-cost sensors. METHODS: We compared measurements from a network of low-cost sensors with a separate network of monitors from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the Houston metropolitan area from Mar 18, 2019, to Dec 31, 2020. Further, we examined the associations between neighborhood-level sociodemographic status and air pollution patterns by linking the low-cost sensor data to EPA environmental justice screening and mapping systems. FINDINGS: We found increased PM levels during ITC fire and pre-COVID-19, and lower PM levels after the COVID-19 lockdown, comparable to observations from the regulatory monitors, with higher variations and a greater number of locations with high PM levels detected. In addition, the environmental justice analysis showed positive associations between higher PM levels and the percentage of minority, low-income population, and demographic index. IMPLICATION: Our study indicates that low-cost sensors provide pollutant measures with higher spatial variations and a better ability to identify hot spots and high peak concentrations. These advantages provide critical information for disaster response and environmental justice studies. SYNOPSIS: We used measurements from a low-cost sensor network for air pollution monitoring and environmental justice analysis to examine the impact of anthropogenic and natural disasters.

BACKGROUND: Although a few studies have reported the relationship between high and low temperatures and chronic kidney disease (CKD), the global burden of CKD attributable to extreme heat and cold in recent decades remains unknown. METHODS: Based on the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2019, we obtained data on age-standardized mortality rates (ASMR) and age-standardized rates of disability-adjusted life years (ASDR) per 100 000 population of the CKD attributable to non-optimum temperatures from 1990 to 2019. The annual mean temperature of each country was used to divide each country into five climate zones (tropical, subtropical, warm-temperate, cool-temperate, and boreal). The locally weighted regression model was used to estimate the burden for different climate zones and Socio-demographic index (SDI) regions. RESULTS: In 1990, the ASMR and ASDR due to high temperature estimated -0.01 (95% UI, -0.74 to 0.44) and -0.32 (-21.66 to 12.66) per 100 000 population, respectively. In 2019, the ASMR and ASDR reached 0.10 (-0.28 to 0.38) and 2.71 (-8.07 to 10.46), respectively. The high-temperature burden increased most rapidly in tropical and low SDI regions. There were 0.99 (0.59 to 1.39) ASMR attributable to low-temperature in 1990, which increased to 1.05 (0.61-1.49) in 2019. While the ASDR due to low temperature declined from 22.03 (12.66 to 30.64) in 1990 to 20.43 (11.30 to 29.26) in 2019. Overall, the burden of CKD attributable to non-optimal temperatures has increased from 1990 to 2019. CKD due to hypertension and diabetes mellitus were the primary causes of CKD death attributable to non-optimum temperatures in 2019 with males and older adults being more susceptible to these temperatures. CONCLUSIONS: The CKD burden due to high, low, and non-optimum temperatures varies considerably by regions and countries. The burden of CKD attributable to high temperature has been increasing since 1990.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to use multidimensional musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging technique to investigate the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) on shoulder subluxation in poststroke patients with hemiplegic shoulder pain. METHODS: In this prospective single-blind, randomized, sham-controlled study, thirty-four patients with shoulder subluxation and hemiplegic shoulder pain were recruited and randomly assigned into the EA group or the sham EA (SEA) group. In the EA group, EA was applied to the Jian yu (LI15), Bi nao (LI14), Jian zhen (SI9), and Jian liao (TE14) acupoints. In the SEA group, the EA was applied 15 mm away from the Lou gu (SP7), Di ji (SP8), Jiao xin (KI8), and Zhu bin (KI9) acupoints. Both groups underwent treatment 30 minutes/day, five days a week, for two weeks using dense waves with a frequency of 2/100 Hz. A Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) was used to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment in reducing shoulder pain. Musculoskeletal ultrasound was used to evaluate the changes of measures of shoulder subluxation in multidimensions (i.e., the acromiohumeral distance, AHD; acromion-greater tuberosity, AGT; and acromion-lesser tuberosity, ALT). Both the within- and between-groups treatment effects were assessed. RESULTS: The pain intensity measured by VAS and shoulder subluxation measured by musculoskeletal ultrasound (i.e., AHD, AGT, and ALT) showed significant (p < 0.05) within-group difference in both groups. The between-group difference appeared in the pain intensity (p < 0.05), while it disappeared in the three measures of shoulder subluxation (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Using VAS for measuring pain intensity and multidimensional musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging technique for measuring shoulder subluxation, this study finds that the hemiplegic shoulder pain can be improved significantly by the EA while the shoulder subluxation cannot be. Our findings further reveal the analgesic mechanism of EA on hemiplegic shoulder pain following stroke.

BACKGROUND: Long-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, limited data on trends in the global burden of T2D attributed to PM2.5, particularly in different regions by social-economic levels. We evaluated the spatio-temporal changes in the disease burden of T2D attributed to PM2.5 from 1990 to 2019 in 204 countries and regions with different socio-demographic indexes (SDI). METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis with data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 (GBD2019) database. The burden of T2D attributed to PM2.5, age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) and age-standardized disability-adjusted life year rate (ASDR) were estimated according to sex, age, nationality and SDI. The annual percentage change (APCs) and the average annual percentage change (AAPCs) were calculated by using the Joinpoint model to evaluate the changing trend of ASMR and ASDR attributed to PM2.5 from 1990 to 2019. The Gaussian process regression model was used to estimate the relationship of SDI with ASMR and ASDR. RESULTS: Overall, the global burden of T2D attributable to PM2.5 increased significantly since 1990, particularly in the elderly, men, Africa, Asia and low-middle SDI regions. The ASMR and ASDR of T2D attributable to PM2.5 in 2019 were 2.47 (95% CI: 1.71, 3.24) per 100,000 population and 108.98 (95% CI: 74.06, 147.23) per 100,000 population, respectively. From 1990 to 2019, the global ASMR and ASDR of T2D attributed to T2D increased by 57.32% and 86.75%, respectively. The global AAPCs of ASMR and ASDR were 1.57 (95% CI: 1.46, 1.68) and 2.17 (95% CI: 2.02, 2.32), respectively. Declining trends were observed in North America, South America, Europe, Australia, and other regions with high SDI. CONCLUSIONS: Over this 30-years study, the global T2D burden attributable to PM2.5 has increased particularly in regions with low-middle SDI. PM2.5 remains a great concern on the global burden of diabetes.

Cyclin-dependent kinase 1 (CDK1) has a unique role in cell cycle regulation, as it is crucial for cell cycle progression and cell division. The aim of the present study was to use a combination of various detection methods to examine the expression and clinical significance of CDK1 in thyroid cancer (THCA). We used in-house tissue microarrays, immunohistochemistry, public RNA-sequencing, gene microarrays, and meta-analyses to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the role of CDK1 in the occurrence and development of THCA. CDK1 protein expression was notably higher in THCA tissues than in non-cancer tissues as evidenced by the in-house tissue microarrays. The expression of CDK1 protein was also significantly higher in pathologic T3-T4 than in T1-T2 samples. The pooled standardized mean difference (SMD) for CDK1 was 0.71 (95% CI, 0.46-0.95) including a total of 931 THCA and 585 non-cancerous thyroid tissue samples. An aggregation of the immunohistochemistry results and the RNA-sequencing/microarray findings gave a pooled SMD for CDK1 expression of 2.13 (95% CI, 1.30-2.96). The final area under curve (AUC) for the summarized receiver operating characteristic (sROC) was 0.7941 using all 1102 cases of THCA and 672 cases of controls. KEGG analysis with the co-expressed genes of CDK1 in THCA demonstrated the top enriched pathways to be the cell cycle, thyroid hormone synthesis, autoimmune thyroid disease, etc. In summary, we reveal the overexpression of CDK1 in THCA based on multiple detection methods that combine independent cohorts. However, further studies are required to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of CDK1 that promotes the biological aggressiveness of THCA cells.

Nutrition screening to identify patients at risk of malnutrition is vital for cancer patients because of the high prevalence of malnutrition in this population. The aim of the present study was to compare different methods of nutrition assessment in patients with tumors. From June 2013 to June 2014, we conducted an observational multicenter study to compare the assessment of nutritional status in patients with tumors by anthropometry, biochemical indicators, nutritional risk screening (NRS-2002) and patient-generated subjective global assessment (PG-SGA). Mann-Whitney test and Kruskal-Wallis H non-parametric test were used for intergroup comparisons. Spearmans rank correlation coefficients were calculated to evaluate the association between different methods of nutritional assessment. The κ statistic was used to evaluate the agreement between two assessment methods. A total of 927 oncology inpatients underwent full nutritional assessment and nutrition screening. The PG-SGA tool determined that 13.7% of patients were well-nourished (PG-SGA from 0-1) and the rest (86.3%) were malnourished. Among the malnourished patients, 57.8% were moderately malnourished (PG-SGA from 2-8) and 28.5% were severely malnourished (PG-SGA ≥9). According to NRS-2002, 30.7% of patients were at nutritional risk (NRS-2002 ≥3). There was a significant positive correlation between PG-SGA scores and NRS-2002 scores in both men and women. Compared to albumin, the PG-SGA had a sensitivity of 93.78% and specificity of 21.80%. In comparison, NRS-2002 had a low sensitivity of 43.13% and relatively higher specificity of 82.16%. In conclusion, the relationship between PG-SGA, NRS-2002 and nutritional status is statistically significant. Compared with NRS-2002, PG-SGA is a suitable screening tool for detecting the risk of malnutrition in patients with cancer.

The aim of this study was to evaluate clinical and economic validity of perioperative immunonutrition and effect on postoperative immunity in patients with gastrointestinal cancers. Immunonutrition diet supplemented two or more of nutrients including glutamine, arginine, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and ribonucleic acids. A meta-analysis of all relevant clinical randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was performed. The trials compared perioperative immunonutrition diet with standard diet. We extracted RCTs from electronic databases: Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, EMBASE, SCI and assessed methodological quality of them according handbook for Cochrane reviewer in June 2006. Statistical analysis was performed by RevMan4.2 software. Thirteen RCTs involving 1269 patients were included. The combined results showed that immunonutrition had no significant effect on postoperative mortality (OR =0.91, p= 0.84). But it had positive effect on postoperative infection rate (OR =0.41, p<0.00001), length of hospital stay (WMD=-3.48, p<0.00001). Furthermore, it improved immune function by increasing total lymphocytes (WMD=0.40, p<0.00001), CD4 levels (WMD=11.39, p<0.00001), IgG levels (WMD=1.07, p=0.0005) and decreasing IL6 levels (WMD=-201.83, p<0.00001). At the same time, we did not found significant difference in CD8, IL2 and CRP levels . There were no serious side effects and two trials found low hospital cost. In conclusion, perioperative diet adding immunonutrition is effective and safe to decrease postoperative infection and reduce length of hospital stay through improving immunity of postoperative patients as compared with the control group. Further prospective study is required in children or critical patients with gastrointestinal surgery.

This paper introduces an improved diffusion model which is accurate and fast in computation for the cases of mu(a)/mu'(s) < 0.07 as good as the conventional diffusion model for the cases of mu(a)/mu'(s) < 0.007 for surface measurement, hence more suitable than the conventional model to be the forward model used in the image reconstruction in the diffuse optical tomography. Deviation of the diffusion approximation (DA) on the medium surface is first studied in the Monte Carlo (MC) diffusion hybrid model for reflectance setup. A modification of DA and an improved MC diffusion hybrid model based on this modified DA are introduced. Numerical tests show that for media with relatively strong absorption the present modified diffusion approach can reduce the surface deviation significantly in both the hybrid and pure diffusion model, and consumes nearly no more computation time than the conventional diffusion approach.
