RESUMO

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, located at the Third Pole and known as the "Asian water tower," serves as a crucial ecological barrier for China. Grasping the soil quality on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau holds paramount importance for the rational and scientific exploitation of soil resources within the region and is essential for vegetation restoration and ecological reconstruction. This study, conducted in Maqin County, Qinghai Province, collected 1647 soil samples (0-20 cm) within a study area of 6300 km2. Sixteen soil indicators were selected that were split into beneficial (N, P, S, and B), harmful (Cr, Hg, As, Pb, Ni, and Cd), and essential (Cu, Zn, Se, Ga, K, and Ca) elements. The Soil Quality Index (SQI) was computed to assess soil quality across diverse geological contexts, land cover classifications, and soil profiles. The results indicate that the overall SQI in the study area was comparatively high, with most regions having an SQI between 0.4 and 0.6, categorized as moderately to highly satisfactory. Among the different geological backgrounds, the highest SQI was found in the Quaternary alluvium (0.555) and the lowest in the Precambrian Jinshuikou Formation (0.481). Regarding different land-use types, the highest SQI was observed in glacier- and snow-covered areas (0.582) and the lowest in other types of grassland (0.461). The highest SQI was recorded in typical alpine meadow soil (0.521) and the lowest in leached brown soil (0.460). The evaluation results have significant reference value for the sustainable utilization and management of soil in Maqin County, Qinghai Province, China.

Background: We analysed the cancer burden among elderly Chinese people over the age of 55 years and compared them to USA and Western Europe to explore the cancer model in China. Methods: We retrieved data on 29 cancers with 34 risk factors from the 2019 Global Burden of Disease database to evaluate the cancer burden in Chinese elderly individuals aged 55 years and older. We then used the age-standardised incidence rate (ASIR), age-standardised death rate (ASDR), age-standardised disability-adjusted life year (DALY) rate, and average annual percentage change (AAPC) to compare the characteristics and change trend of cancers among China, USA, and Western Europe. Results: In 2019, the number of incident cases of 29 cancers among people aged 55 years and above in China increased more than 3-fold compared to 1990, while the number of deaths and DALYs approximately doubled. We also found that the cancer population in China was ageing; meanwhile, the cancer burden became significantly higher for men than for women, and the gap between men and women had widened. Cancers with the highest cancer DALYs were lung cancer (13 444 500; 95% uncertainty interval (UI) = 11 307 100, 15 853 700), stomach cancer (7 303 900; 95% UI = 6 094 600, 8 586 500), oesophageal cancer (4 633 500; 95% UI = 3 642 500, 5 601 200), colon and rectum cancer (4 386 500; 95% UI = 3 769 500, 5 067 200), liver cancer (2 915 100, 95% UI = 2 456 300, 3 463 900), and pancreatic cancer (2 028 400; 95% UI = 1 725 000, 2 354 900). Compared with 1990, the DALY rate and incidence rate of stomach cancer, oesophageal cancer, and liver cancer had markedly decreased. The DALY rate and incidence rate of lung, colon, rectum, and pancreatic cancer had increased significantly, as did the incidence rate of breast cancer in women. Smoking and diet were the top two cancer risk factors, and the impact of ambient particulate matter pollution on cancer increased each year. The overall 29 cancers age-standardised DALY rate and ASDR in China, USA, and Western Europe were similar, and all showed downward trend in the past 30 years. Compared with the USA and Western Europe, the age-standardised DALY rate of liver, nasopharyngeal, oesophageal, stomach, and cervical cancers in China was more prominent. The age-standardised DALY rate of lung cancer and colon and rectum cancer decreased annually in Western Europe and the USA, but increased in China. Conclusions: Over the past 30 years, China had made progress in controlling stomach, oesophageal, and liver cancer. However, lung, colon, rectum, pancreatic, and breast cancers had become more prevalent, having risen alongside economic development. The risks of smoking and dietary were major issues that need to be addressed urgently. The cancer situation in China remains serious; future cancer prevention efforts need to balance economic development with people's physical health, identify key groups, improve the health environment of residents and guide them to live a healthy life, and expand the scope of cancer screening.

BACKGROUND: Primary brain and central nervous system cancer (collectively called CNS cancers) cause a significant burden to society. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the trends in the burden of CNS cancers from 1990 to 2019 and to predict the incidence and mortality rates and the corresponding numbers for the next 25 years to help countries to understand the trends in its incidence and mortality, and to make better adjustments or formulation of policies and allocation of resources thereby reducing the burden of the disease. METHODS: The 2019 Global Burden of Disease Study provided incidence rates, death rates, and disability-adjusted life year (DALY) data in Asia from 1990 to 2019. To reflect the trends in the age-standardized incidence, mortality, and DALY rates, the estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) was determined. The Bayesian age-period cohort (BAPC) model was employed to predict the burden of CNS cancers in the next 25 years. RESULTS: The incidence, death, and DALY rates of CNS cancers all increased from 1990 to 2019. The age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) for CNS cancers increased from 9.89/100,000 in 1990 to 12.14/100,000 in 2019, with an EAPC of 0.69 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.65, 0.73). The ASDR and the age-standardized DALY rate both decreased, with EAPCs of - 0.08 and - 0.52, respectively. Before 2005, the age-standardized DALY rate in East Asia was much greater in females than in males, while in Central Asia, the age-standardized death and DALY rates in males both increased sharply after 2000. In contrast to 1990, the caseload increased for the 55-70 years age group. The number of deaths decreased sharply among individuals aged younger than 20 years, especially in East Asia, accounting for only 5.41% of all deaths. The age group with the highest mortality rate was > 60 years, especially in Japan. The ASIR will continue to increase in Asia from 2020 to 2044, and the ASDR will gradually diminish. The incidence and number of deaths from CNS cancers in Asia are expected to increase over the next 25 years, especially among females. CONCLUSIONS: The study identified an increasing trend in morbidity, mortality and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), with differences in age-standardized morbidity rates for different population groups. In addition, it is noteworthy that the burden of disease (as measured by disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs)) is higher among women in Central Asia compared with other regions. ASIR will continue to increase over the next 25 years, with the increase in female cases and mortality expected to be more pronounced. This may need to be further substantiated by additional research, on the basis of which health authorities and policymakers can better utilize limited resources and develop appropriate policies and preventive measures.

We developed a model for promoting adolescent physical and mental health (MH) to investigate the integrated pathways of physical activity (PA), MH, general self-efficacy (GSE), and sleep duration (SD) promotion among adolescents in China. The research hypotheses were tested using questionnaires, descriptive statistics, and validated factor analysis. The mean age of the respondents was 14.94 ± 1.76 years, the PA level was 2.49 [95% confidence interval (CI): 2.46-2.53], the GSE score was 2.60 (95% CI: 2.57-2.64), the SD was 436.52 min/day (95% CI: 432.89-440.15), and the total mean MH score was 1.72 (95% CI: 1.69-1.76) (model fitness index: χ2/df = 1.295, comparative fit index = 0.999, Tucker-Lewis index = 0.997, root mean square error of approximation = 0.014, standardized root mean square residual = 0.007). The SD accounted for 46.85% of the mediating effect. The adolescents exhibited moderately low PA levels, severe SD deficits, and high rates of overall MH abnormalities. Consequently, the constructed model for promoting adolescent physical health and MH was confirmed to be reliable; GSE and SD are significant factors mediating MH promotion.

This study explores the pollution characteristics, risks, and sources of heavy metals in small-scale areas. Rongcheng District, Jieyang City, Guangdong Province was considered as the study area and enrichment factor (EF), pollution load index (PLI), potential ecological risk index (RI), and US EPA health risk assessment model were used to evaluate its environmental risk. Moreover, the source apportionment of heavy metals was analyzed through correlation analysis, the characteristic of spatial distribution, and a PMF model. The results showed that the mean concentrations of ω(Cr), ω(Hg), ω(As), ω(Pb), ω(Ni), ω(Cd), ω(Cu), and ω(Zn) were 54.87, 0.25, 8.35, 56.00, 15.38, 0.35, 30.56, and 124.23 mg·kg-1, respectively. The mean concentrations of all elements exceeded the local soil background value. In terms of EF level, Cr, As, Pb, and Ni showed negligible accumulation; Zn and Cu showed minor accumulation; and Hg and Cd showed moderate accumulation. The mean value of the pollution load index was 2.37, with a severe pollution level, and the eight elements were in different pollution levels. In total, the study region suffered severe ecological risk, Hg and Cd presented strong ecological risk, and other elements presented slight ecological risk. The non-carcinogenic risks under the three exposure paths were within the acceptable level. The carcinogenic risks (CR) of adults and children were 9.81E-05 and 5.59E-04, respectively, and Cr and As were the main contributors of CR. The results showed that the four sources of heavy metals were transportation sources (37.02%), parent material sources (18.53%), atmospheric deposition sources (26.49%), and industrial sources (17.96%).

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is distinguished by its diverse ecosystems and biodiversity, which are highly dependent on their soil. In this study, a comprehensive analysis was conducted to assess the ecological risks in Maqin County, located on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, along with the local background values of soil elements, level of element enrichment, and source appointment of soil elements. The findings show that the background soil element levels in Maqin County were greater than the average soil content values in China. The soils in the study area exhibited pollution levels ranging from weak to moderate. The positive matrix factorization (PMF) model was employed to successfully categorized soil elements into four sources: F1 (natural sources), F2 (grazing sources), F3 (volcanic and rock fracture sources), and F4 (intrusive and deep rock source). Based on the characteristics of the ecological communities and the network environmental analysis model, ecological risks were directly introduced through vegetation and soil microorganisms, with subsequent transmission to other components of the ecosystem through the food chain. The integrated risks associated with vegetation, herbivores, soil microorganisms, and carnivores were 0.0106, 0.00193, 0.0282, and 0.00132, respectively. Notably, soil microorganisms were found to be the primary contributors to the total ecological risk in the study area. Furthermore, network environmental analysis and human health risk models revealed that F1, F2, F3, and F4 accounted for 16.85 %, 8.90 %, 21.76 %, and 52.49 % of the input risk of vegetation and soil microorganisms, respectively. Particularly, F4 emerged as the largest contributor to human health risks. This study provides valuable information for the preservation of the ecological environment in pastoral areas, contributing to the global promotion of sustainable ecological practices.

Objective: We designed a diagnostic test to evaluate the effectiveness and accuracy of a multidimensional voiceprint feature diagnostic assessment (MVFDA) system vs. the 24-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD-24) for adjunctive diagnosis of children and adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD). Methods: This study included 55 children aged 6-16 years who were clinically diagnosed with MDD according to the DSM-5 and analyzed by professional physicians, and 55 healthy children (typically developing). Each subject completed a voice recording and was scored on the HAMD-24 scale by a trained rater. We calculated the validity indices, including sensitivity, specificity, Youden's index, likelihood ratio, and other indices including predictive value, diagnostic odds ratio, diagnostic accuracy, and area under the curve (AUC), to assess the effectiveness of the MVFDA system in addition to the HAMD-24. Results: The sensitivity (92.73 vs. 76.36%) and the specificity (90.91 vs. 85.45%) of the MVFDA system are significantly higher than those of the HAMD-24. The AUC of the MVFDA system is also higher than that of the HAMD-24. There is a statistically significant difference between the groups (p < 0.05), and both of them have high diagnostic accuracy. In addition, the diagnostic efficacy of the MVFDA system is higher than that of HAMD-24 in terms of the Youden index, diagnostic accuracy, likelihood ratio, diagnostic odds ratio, and predictive value. Conclusion: The MVFDA has performed well in clinical diagnostic trials for the identification of MDD in children and adolescents by capturing objective sound features. Compared with the scale assessment method, the MVFDA system could be further promoted in clinical practice due to its advantages of simple operation, objective rating, and high diagnostic efficiency.

The study combined multiple models to provide a deeper understanding to soil heavy metal contamination and source information, which are essential for controlling pollution and reducing human health risks. In this study, the agricultural soils were collected from the Qingyuan City of China as an example. The multiple models (APCS/MLR, PMF, and GDM) were used to identify and quantitatively apportion the main sources of heavy metal pollution in the area. The results showed that Cu (56.4 %), Ni (70.9 %), B (44.5 %), and Cr (72.8 %) were associated with natural sources, such as soil parent material and soil-forming processes. However, Pb (41.2 %), Zn (61.8 %), Hg (67.0 %), and Cd (69.6 %) were associated with agricultural activities, atmospheric deposition, vehicle exhaust emissions, and vehicle tires, while Mo, Se, and Mn were possibly derived from natural sources, including rock weathering and soil parent materials. Additionally, the network of environmental analysis revealed that soil microbes are far more sensitive to soil heavy metal pollution than herbivores, vegetation, and carnivores. This study can serve as a guideline for reducing the ecological and health risks associated with heavy metals in soil by controlling their preferential sources. Environmental implication Combining multiple models is more effective approach to wide understanding of heavy metal contamination and source information, which is essential for controlling pollution and reducing human health risks. Based on multiple models (APCS/MLR, PMF, and GDM) and network environ analysis, a comprehensive method for apportioning soil heavy metal sources and assessing ecological risk had been provided. Further, the present study can be a guideline for reducing ecological and health risks by heavy metals in soil by controlling preferential sources.

Geological hazards caused by strong earthquakes have caused continuous social and economic losses and destruction of the ecological environment in the hazard area, and are mostly manifested in the areas with frequent occurrence of geological hazards or the clustering of geological hazards. Considering the long-term nature of earthquakes and geological disasters in this region, this paper takes ten earthquake-stricken areas in Wenchuan earthquake zone as examples to collect shallow landslide data in 2010, combined with the spatial location of landslides and other factors. Kernel density estimation (KDE) method is used to analyze the spatial characteristics of shallow landslide. Taking the space of shallow landslide as the characteristic variable and fully considering the regulating factors of earthquake-induced landslide: terrain complexity, distance to river, distance to fault, distance to road, lithology, normalized vegetation difference index (NDVI) and ground peak acceleration (PGA) as independent variables, based on KDE and polynomial logistic regression (MLR), A quantitative model of shallow landslide in the earthquake area is constructed. The results show that: (1) PGA has the greatest impact on landslide in the study area. (2) Compared with the two-category logistic regression (two-category LR) model, the susceptibility map of landslide prediction results based on the KDE-MLR landslide susceptibility prediction model is more consistent with the actual situation. (3) The prediction accuracy of the model validation set is 70.7%, indicating that the landslide susceptibility prediction model based on KDE-MLR can effectively highlight the spatial characteristics of shallow landslides in 10 extreme disaster areas. The research results can provide decision-making basis for shallow landslide warning and post-disaster reconstruction in earthquake-stricken areas.

The association between low socioeconomic status (SES), migration background and psychosocial health could be various in different age stages, rare research has investigated associations in very early childhood. Cross-sectional data of SES, parental migration background, and child's psychosocial problems among 2149 children were collected (M age = 24.6 ± 1.8 months, 49.9% girls) from a community population. Indicators of SES included parental education level, maternal work status, and family composition. Child's psychosocial problems, including social-emotional problems and delay in social-emotional competence, were assessed by the Brief Infant-Toddler Social and Emotional Assessment Problem scale and Competence scale, respectively. Interaction effects between SES and maternal migration background in risk of psychosocial problems were found. Among children of a native-born mother, lower maternal and paternal education levels indicated a higher risk of social-emotional problems and competence delay, respectively. Children of a migrant mother had a higher risk of both social-emotional problems and competence delay if they had a migrant father. The results highlight psychosocial health disparities in 2-year-old children and the need for research into mechanisms underlying these associations.

OBJECTIVE: We design a diagnostic test to evaluate the effectiveness and accuracy of A non-intrusive Wearable Diagnostic Assessment System versus SNAP-IV for auxiliary diagnosis of children with ADHD. METHODS: This study included 55 children aged 6-16 years who were clinically diagnosed with ADHD by DSM-5, and 55 healthy children (typically developing). Each subject completes 10 tasks on the WeDA system (Wearable Diagnostic Assessment System) and Parents of each subject complete the SNAP-IV scale. We will calculate the validity indexes, including sensitivity, specificity, Youden's index, likelihood ratio, and other indexes including predictive value, diagnostic odds ratio, diagnostic accuracy and area under the curve [AUC] to assess the effectiveness of the WeDA system as well as the SNAP-IV. RESULTS: The sensitivity (94.55% vs. 76.36%) and the specificity (98.18% vs. 80.36%) of the WeDA system were significantly higher than the SNAP-IV. The AUC of the WeDA system (0.964) was higher than the SNAP-IV (0.907). There is non-statistically significant difference between groups (p = 0.068), and both of them have high diagnostic accuracy. In addition, the diagnostic efficacy of the WeDA system was higher than that of SNAP-IV in terms of the Youden index, diagnostic accuracy, likelihood ratio, diagnostic odds ratio and predictive value. CONCLUSION: The advantages of the WeDA system in terms of diagnostic objectivity, scientific design and ease of operation make it a promising system for widespread use in clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: Social support and self-efficacy are important factors to improve negative emotions such as depression and anxiety in patients with prostate cancer after surgery; however, little is known about the relationship between them. The objective of the study was to comprehensively explore the relationship between social support, self-efficacy, and anxiety and depression. METHOD: A cross-sectional design and a convenience sampling method were used to recruit patients with prostate cancer from a comprehensive hospital in Zhejiang Province. Structured scales were used for data collection, including the Social Support Rating Scale, Strategies Used by People to Promote Health, and the hospital anxiety and depression scale. RESULTS: The result showed that anxiety and depression were negatively correlated with self-efficacy (r = - 0. 434, P < 0. 01) and social support (r = - 0. 212, P < 0. 01), while self-efficacy and social support were positively correlated (r = 0. 356, P < 0. 01). A structural equation model showed that the effect value of social support on self-efficacy was (ß = 0.386, p < 0.01) and the effect value of self-efficacy on negative emotions was (ß = - 0.497, p < 0.01). Self-efficacy fully mediated the effect between social support and negative emotions with a 100% mediation rate. CONCLUSION: Social support and self-efficacy did contribute to the improvement of depression and anxiety in patients with radical prostatectomy, and they were associated with a full mediating effect of self-efficacy. Providing social support that matches the coping needs of the stressor can maximize the role of social support. Therefore, it is necessary to identify the patient's stressor and coping needs in advance, which will help us to provide matching social support, so as to alleviate patients' bad emotions more effectively and improve their prognosis.

With the economic development of society, concentrations of atmospheric CO2 and heavy metals in soils have been increasing. The physiological responses of plants to the interaction between soil pollution and climatic change need to be understood. Pot experiments were designed to assess variations in Festuca arundinacea dry weight, leaf type, chlorophyll content, antioxidase activities, and Cd accumulation ability, under different atmospheric CO2 treatments. The results showed that the total dry weights increased with increasing CO2, and Cd concentrations in falling leaf tissues increased with raised atmospheric CO2, before reaching a peak at 600 ppm, above which they remained constant. Compared with the control (400 ppm), 600, 650, and 700 ppm CO2 treatments increased the proportions of the falling tissues by 1.7%, 3.3%, and 4.5%, respectively. Antioxidant enzyme activities in plant leaves increased with increasing atmospheric CO2 levels. The concentration of H2O2 in leaf tissues increased with increasing CO2, reaching a peak at 600 ppm, and then decreased significantly as the CO2 content increased further, to 700 ppm. The results in this study suggest that F. arundinacea could be regarded as a potential candidate for phytoremediation of Cd-polluted soil; especially if senescent and dead leaf tissues could be harvested, and that raised atmospheric CO2 levels could improve its soil remediation efficiency.Novelty statement Extrapolation of results from experiments of environmental impacts in greenhouse to real scale field requires to be considered cautiously. External factors such as water, temperature, humidity, and pollution are variable in real field. Plants will face a lot of beneficial or detrimental conditions which will influence the magnitude of the results. However, the elevation of CO2 is an inevitable phenomenon in future. Therefore, findings from experiments under artificial conditions are sometime a good choice to obtain knowledge about elevated CO2 related impacts on phytoremediation efficiency of a specific plant. The final goal of this work is to find a suitable CO2 fumigation strategy optimized for soil remediation. We report on that elevated atmospheric CO2 can increase the phytoremediation efficiency of Festuca arundinacea for Cd. This is significant because the combined influences of elevated atmospheric CO2 and metal pollution in terms of biomass yield, pollutant uptake, and phytoremediation efficiency would be more complex than the effects of each individual factor.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, α-Gal epitope-deficient (GGTA1 knockout (GTKO)) mice were used to assess the immunological risks of xenogeneic dural patch by comparing with raw material. METHODS: The xenogeneic dural patch (T2) was prepared from bovine pericardium (T1, raw material) through decellularization and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) coating. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the collagen fibers and surface microstructural changes in the T1 and T2 samples. The remnant α-Gal epitopes and DNA of implants were detected by standardized method. T1 and T2 were implanted subcutaneously into GTKO mice for 4 and 12 weeks, respectively, and the negative control group (Con) was only performed sham operation. The total serum antibody, anti-Gal antibody, and splenic lymphocyte subtypes were analyzed by ELISA or flow cytometry, and histological analysis of implant-tissue was performed by H&E and Masson stain. RESULTS: TEM and Sirius red staining showed that the collagen fibers in the dural patch were closely arranged, and SEM showed that a loose three-dimensional structure was successfully constructed on the surface of the dural patch after CMCS coating. The remnant DNA in T2 was 24.64 ± 8.73 ng/mg (dry weight), and clearance of α-Gal epitope was up to 99.83% compared to T1. The significant increases in serum total IgM, anti-Gal IgG, and anti-Gal IgM at 4 weeks and the significant changes in anti-Gal IgG and spleen lymphocyte at 12 weeks were observed in the T1 group, but no significant change was observed in the T2 group, compared to the control group. Histological semiquantitative analysis showed severe cell and tissue responses at 4 weeks and a moderate response at 12 weeks in the T1 group, while a moderate response at 4 weeks and a slight response at 12 weeks in the T2 group. CONCLUSIONS: The results demonstrated that the xenogeneic dural patch has a lower and acceptable immunological risk compared to the raw material and control, respectively. On the other hand, it was suggested that GTKO mice are useful experimental model for immunological risk assessment of animal tissue-derived biomaterials.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) represents the third most common malignant tumor in the worldwide. Radiotherapy is the common therapeutic treatment for CRC, but radiation resistance is often encountered. ChIP-seq of Histone H3K27 acetylation (H3K27ac) has revealed enhancers that play an important role in CRC. This study examined the relationship between an active CRC enhancer and claudin-1 (CLDN1), and its effect on CRC radiation resistance. METHODS: The target CRC genes of active enhancers were obtained from public H3K27ac ChIP-seq, and the genes highly expressed in radio-resistant CRC were screened and intersected with enhancer-driven genes. The clinical roles of CLDN1 in radiation resistance were examined using the t-test, standard mean deviation (SMD), summary receiver operating characteristic curve and Kaplan-Meier curves. The co-expressed genes of CLDN1 were calculated using Pearson Correlation analysis, and Gene Ontology (GO), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes and Gene Set Variation Analysis (GSVA) analyses were used to examine the molecular mechanisms of CLDN1. RESULTS: Total 13 703 CRC genes were regulated by enhancers using 58 H3K27ac ChIP-seq. Claudin-1 (CLDN1) was enhancer-driven and notably up-regulated in CRC tissues compared to non-CRC controls, with a SMD of 3.45 (95 CI % = .56-4.35). CLDN1 expression was increased in radiation-resistant CRC with a SMD of .42 (95% CI = .16-.68) and an area under the curve of .74 (95% CI = .70-.77). The cell cycle and immune macrophage levels were the most significant pathways associated with CLDN1. CONCLUSION: CLDN1 as an enhancer-regulated gene that can boost radiation resistance in patients with CRC.

To make pollution evaluation of potentially hazardous elements in the soil more accurately, the regional geochemical baseline concentrations of eight potentially hazardous elements (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Hg, and Pb) were established in Huilai County using cumulative frequency distribution curves. Then, the pollution load index and enrichment factor were applied to estimate the contamination levels, based on these geochemical baseline concentrations. The results suggested that topsoil was moderately polluted by potentially hazardous elements, while Cd pollution in the construction land and As pollution in the farmland was relatively severe. The possible sources of eight potentially hazardous elements were analyzed by correlation analysis, geostatistics and positive matrix factorization. Four sources have been determined and apportioned, namely industrial activities, natural sources, agricultural practices, and traffic emissions. Combining the health risk assessment with the source profiles, the health risks quantified from four sources were estimated under farmland, construction land, and woodland. The results showed that agricultural practices were the most main source of non-cancer and cancer risks under woodland and farmland for adults; industrial activities were the most main source of non-cancer and cancer risks under construction land for adults. Children's health risks, both carcinogenic risk and non-carcinogenic risk, were greater than adults, and the health risk trends of adults and children showed similarities. Therefore, agricultural practices under woodland and farmland should be controlled and managed as a priority, while industrial activities should be given priority to control and management under construction land.

Mercury, particularly methylmercury, can accumulate through food webs and generate high risks for species at higher trophic levels. Inorganic mercury can be methylated into the organic species methylmercury if suitable reducing conditions exist, for example, in hotspots like oilfields. We developed a conceptual model to conduct an ecological risk assessment based on the food web structure of the Shengli oilfield area, China. The model can identify species at risk and elucidate the sources of risks according to their diet. A risk rating criteria was developed based on the food web structure to categorize the different levels of risks for different species. As expected, the results indicate increasing risks for the biota higher in the food web hierarchy. Grasshoppers were mostly at no risk throughout the study area, whereas grubs at southwest were at minimal risks due to local high Hg concentration in the soil. Mantises, which are insect predators, were also at minimal risk. Herbivorous birds with similar feeding habits than grasshoppers were at no risk, but omnivorous and carnivorous birds were at moderate risk. The conceptual model is a useful tool to improve pollution remediation and establish risk control strategies based on ecological risks of the food web rather than just Hg concentrations in the environment.

Background: With new randomised pieces of evidence and the latest clinical practice guideline from the BMJ emerging in 2018, an updated analysis of best available evidence on the controversial effects of corticosteroids in sepsis is warranted. Objectives: To comprehensively evaluate whether corticosteroids are beneficial in reducing mortality and what cumulative dosage, daily dosage, and duration of corticosteroid treatment would enable adult patients with sepsis to reach the critical point of benefits. Methods: Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid EMbase, Cochrane Library, and LILACS database were searched until March 22, 2019. Results: Thirty RCTs with 8,836 participants were identified. Long course low-dose corticosteroid therapy could improve 28-day mortality (RR = 0.90, 95% CI = 0.84-0.97; high quality), intensive care unit mortality (RR = 0.87; 95% CI = 0.79-0.95; moderate quality), and in-hospital mortality (RR = 0.88, 95% CI = 0.79-0.997; high quality). However, we found no benefits for 90-day, 180-day, and 1-year mortality. Subgroup results of long course corticosteroid treatment in a population with septic shock and vasopressor-dependent septic shock, corticosteroid regimen with hydrocortisone plus fludrocortisone, corticosteroid dosing strategies including bolus dosing and infusion dosing, the strategies of abrupt discontinuation, timing of randomisation ≤24 h, impact factor of ≥10, and sample size ≥500 were associated with a marginally reduction in 28-day mortality. Conclusions: This meta-analysis found that the long course low-dose and not short course high-dose corticosteroid treatment could marginally improve short-term 28-day mortality with high quality, especially septic shock and vasopressor-dependent septic shock, and it is recommended that long course (about 7 days) low-dose (about 200-300mg per day) hydrocortisone (or equivalent) with cumulative dose (at least about 1,000mg) may be a viable management option for overall patients with sepsis, and it can be also adapted to patient with septic shock alone. Early hydrocortisone plus fludrocortisone administration, via continuous infusion or bolus dosing, is also particularly important for the prognosis. Abrupt discontinuation of corticosteroids, as opposed to the conventional tapered discontinuation, may be considered as a desirable option in 28-day mortality. The safety profile of long course low-dose corticosteroid treatment, including adverse hyperglycaemia and hypernatraemia events, remains a concern, although these events could be easily treated. Mangrove forests are widely located along coastlines. They have been identified to be inimitable and dynamic ecosystems. This study investigated the trace metals in mangrove water and surface sediments of Nansha, Guangzhou, China. Zn (148.42 ± 247.47 µg L-1) was the most abundant metal in waters, followed by As (82.34 ± 118.95 µg L-1), Pb (22.96 ± 120.50 µg L-1), and Ni (19.42 ± 47.84 µg L-1). In sediments, the most abundant metal was Fe (27.04 ± 1.91 g kg-1), followed by Mn (1049.04 ± 364.11 mg kg-1), Zn (566.33 ± 244.37 mg kg-1), and Cr (106.9 ± 28.51 mg kg-1). Higher contents of trace metals were detected in vicinity areas of the river mouth. The results of pollution indexes, including contamination factor, enrichment factor, and geo-accumulation index, indicated the pollution of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn in sediments. The Spearman correlation and cluster analysis were used to evaluate the metal sources. In water, the significant correlations among Zn and water chemical parameters (Na, Mg, K, Ca, conductivity, pH, and Cl) might indicate the natural source of Zn from the seawater. Water sampling sites in estuaries and coastal areas were clustered separately, which might indicate the influences of upstream water and the seawater, respectively. In sediments, the significant relationships among Cd, Pb, and Zn concentrations were likely to imply the emissions from industries and exploitation of the Pb-Zn mine. The occurrence of Cr and Cu in sediments can be attributed to the spills of lubricants or oil. Cd in sediments could cause serious ecological risk.

Triazophos (TAP) was a widely used organophosphorus insecticide in developing countries. TAP could produce specific metabolites triazophos-oxon (TAPO) and 1-phenyl-3-hydroxy-1,2,4-triazole (PHT) and non-specific metabolites diethylthiophosphate (DETP) and diethylphosphate (DEP). The objective of this study involved computational approaches to discover potential mechanisms of molecular interaction of TAP and its major metabolites with endocrine hormone-related proteins using molecular docking in silico. We found that TAP, TAPO and DEP showed high binding affinity with more proteins and enzymes than PHT and DETP. TAP might interfere with the endocrine function of the adrenal gland, and TAP might also bind strongly with glucocorticoid receptors and thyroid hormone receptors. TAPO might disrupt the normal binding of androgen receptor, estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor and adrenergic receptor to their natural hormone ligands. DEP might affect biosynthesis of steroid hormones and thyroid hormones. Meanwhile, DEP might disrupt the binding and transport of thyroid hormones in the blood and the normal binding of thyroid hormones to their receptors. These results suggested that TAP and DEP might have endocrine disrupting activities and were potential endocrine disrupting chemicals. Our results provided further reference for the comprehensive evaluation of toxicity of organophosphorus chemicals and their metabolites.
