RESUMO

The use of electronic devices and social media is becoming a ubiquitous part of most people's lives. Although researchers are exploring the sequelae of such use, little attention has been given to the importance of digital media use in routine psychiatric assessments of patients. The nature of technology use is relevant to understanding a patient's lifestyle and activities, the same way that it is important to evaluate the patient's occupation, functioning, and general activities. The authors propose a framework for psychiatric inquiry into digital media use, emphasizing that such inquiry should focus on quality of use, including emotional and behavioral consequences, rather than simply the amount of use.

Pollution by chemicals and waste impacts human and ecosystem health on regional, national, and global scales, resulting, together with climate change and biodiversity loss, in a triple planetary crisis. Consequently, in 2022, countries agreed to establish an intergovernmental science-policy panel (SPP) on chemicals, waste, and pollution prevention, complementary to the existing intergovernmental science-policy bodies on climate change and biodiversity. To ensure the SPP's success, it is imperative to protect it from conflicts of interest (COI). Here, we (i) define and review the implications of COI, and its relevance for the management of chemicals, waste, and pollution; (ii) summarize established tactics to manufacture doubt in favor of vested interests, i.e., to counter scientific evidence and/or to promote misleading narratives favorable to financial interests; and (iii) illustrate these with selected examples. This analysis leads to a review of arguments for and against chemical industry representation in the SPP's work. We further (iv) rebut an assertion voiced by some that the chemical industry should be directly involved in the panel's work because it possesses data on chemicals essential for the panel's activities. Finally, (v) we present steps that should be taken to prevent the detrimental impacts of COI in the work of the SPP. In particular, we propose to include an independent auditor's role in the SPP to ensure that participation and processes follow clear COI rules. Among others, the auditor should evaluate the content of the assessments produced to ensure unbiased representation of information that underpins the SPP's activities.

Biodiversity is proposed as a sustainable alternative for the economic development of high-biodiversity regions. Especially in the field of biodiversity genomics, the development of low-cost DNA sequencing opens an opportunity for new actors beyond academia to engage in genomic sequencing. However, it is challenging to adequately compensate non-academic actors such as local populations for their contribution to the innovation process, preventing better bioeconomy development. Although many repositories register genomic data to support biodiversity research, they do not facilitate the fair sharing of economic benefits. In this work, we propose the creation of the Amazon Biobank, a community-based genetic database. We employed blockchain to build a transparent and verifiable log of transactions involving genomic data, and we used smart contracts to implement an internal monetary system for all participants who collect, insert, process, store, and validate genomic data. We also used peer-to-peer solutions to allow users with commodity computers to collaborate with the storage and distribution of DNA files. By combining emerging technologies, Amazon Biobank provides adequate benefit-sharing among all participants that collaborate with data, knowledge, and computational resources. It also provides traceability and auditability, allowing easy association between biotechnological research and DNA data. In addition, the solution is highly scalable and less dependent on the trust deposited in any system player. Therefore, Amazon Biobank can become an important stepping stone to unlock the potential of bioeconomy in rich ecosystems such as the Amazon Rainforest.

The assessment of the mechanical power production is of great importance for researchers and practitioners. The purpose of this review was to compare the differences in ground reaction force (GRF), kinematic, and combined (bar velocity x GRF) methods to assess mechanical power production during weightlifting exercises. A search of electronic databases was conducted to identify all publications up to 31 May 2019. The peak power output (PPO) was selected as the key variable. The exercises included in this review were clean variations, which includes the hang power clean (HPC), power clean (PC) and clean. A total of 26 articles met the inclusion criteria with 53.9% using the GRF, 38.5% combined, and 30.8% the kinematic method. Articles were evaluated and descriptively analysed to enable comparison between methods. The three methods have inherent methodological differences in the data analysis and measurement systems, which suggests that these methods should not be used interchangeably to assess PPO in Watts during weightlifting exercises. In addition, this review provides evidence and rationale for the use of the GRF to assess power production applied to the system mass while the kinematic method may be more appropriate when looking to assess only the power applied to the barbell.

Introduction: Reproductive injustices such as forced sterilization, preventable maternal morbidity and mortality, restricted access to family planning services, and policy-driven environmental violence undermine reproductive autonomy and health outcomes, with disproportionate impact on historically marginalized communities. However, curricula focused on reproductive justice (RJ) are lacking in medical education. Methods: We designed a novel, interactive, case-based RJ curriculum for postclerkship medical students. This curriculum was created using published guidelines on best practices for incorporating RJ in medical education. The session included a prerecorded video on the history of RJ, an article, and four interactive cases. Students engaged in a 2-hour small-group session, discussing key learning points of each case. We evaluated the curriculum's impact with a pre- and postsurvey and focus group. Results: Sixty-eight students participated in this RJ curriculum in October 2020 and March 2021. Forty-one percent of them completed the presurvey, and 46% completed the postsurvey. Twenty-two percent completed both surveys. Ninety percent of respondents agreed that RJ was relevant to their future practice, and 87% agreed that participating in this session would impact their clinical practice. Most respondents (81%) agreed that more RJ content is needed. Focus group participants appreciated the case-based, interactive format and the intersectionality within the cases. Discussion: This interactive curriculum is an innovative and effective way to teach medical students about RJ and its relevance to clinical practice. Walking alongside patients as they accessed reproductive health care in a case-based curriculum improved students' comfort and self-reported knowledge on several RJ topics.

We studied the health effects of economic development in heavily urbanized areas, where congestion poses a challenge to environmental conditions. We employed detailed data from air pollution and birth records around the metropolitan area of São Paulo, Brazil, between 2002 and 2009. During this period, the megacity experienced sustained growth marked by the increases in employment rates and ownership of durable goods, including automobiles. While better economic conditions are expected to improve infant health, air pollution that accompanies it is expected to do the opposite. To untangle these two effects, we focused on episodes of thermal inversion-meteorological phenomena that exogenously lock pollutants closer to the ground-to estimate the causal effects of in utero exposure to air pollution. Auxiliary results confirmed a positive relationship between thermal inversions and several air pollutants, and we ultimately found that exposure to inversion episodes during the last three months of pregnancy led to sizable reductions in birth weight and increases in the incidence of preterm births. Increased pollution exposure induced by inversions also has a significant impact over fetal survival as measured by the size of live-birth cohorts.

OBJECTIVE: To provide the prevalence and an overview of cleft lip and palate (CL/P) in the period of 2008 to 2017, as well as the profile of care provided for this condition in Brazil. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study of epidemiological character. SETTING: Brazilian government website. PARTICIPANTS: National Live Birth and Hospital Information System. INTERVENTION: Organization of the end databases and performance-based statistical analysis. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Analysis of the prevalence of CL/P in newborns, sociodemographic condition of the mothers, surgical procedures and hospitalizations, and specialized hospitals in Brazil within a 10-year period. RESULTS: The average prevalence of CL/P in Brazil was ∼52 children per 100 000 live births in the covered period, corresponding to 1 per 1924 newborns. The presence of cleft was associated with preterm birth, being underweight, and the male gender. The highest prevalence was found in the South region, while the lowest was found in the Northeast region, with increasing rates in the North region of Brazil. The states with the highest prevalence were not those with a great number of hospitalizations and surgical procedures for live births with CL/P. CONCLUSION: In the 10-year study period, the prevalence of CL/P was 0.52 newborns per 1000 live births, a result which differs among the states of Brazil. The need to reinforce the national monitoring of the prevalence and surgical procedures of cleft patients have also emphasized the need to improve public medical care for CL/P subjects.

RESUMO

The BCG vaccine is known to impart nonspecific immunological benefits alongside conferring protection to tuberculosis in endemic regions. It is also known to protect against bladder cancer and other respiratory tract infections. During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the BCG vaccine has gained attention due to its role in conferring protective immunity. We demonstrate the potential immunological protective mechanisms that play a role against COVID-19. We conduct a global assessment of the countries that have the highest and lowest mortality rates determined by an a priori methodology. Lastly, we discuss the potential limitations of incorporating BCG vaccines as potential strategies against COVID-19 and provide recommendations regarding their use in ongoing and future epidemics.

Wheat is one of the most important crops worldwide. Mexicali, Baja California, is an important wheat producer in Mexico with an average production of 507,543 t. Wheat straw is generated as a residue which could be used for different purposes such as bioenergy, heat and power generation. In this work, an assessment and potential site determination of a biomass power plant operating with wheat straw as fuel was performed. Aspen Plus was used to evaluate a plant capacity of at least 10 MW considering the physicochemical properties and an higher heating value of 14.86 MJ kg-1 of the wheat straw from the region. The combustion produced 39.76 MW, and the overall plant efficiency was 25.52%. The development of the multi-criteria geographic information system model allowed us to assess and analyse four factors and three restrictions to determine the potential site for the biomass power plant. The factors were raw material, wheat crops, electric transmission lines, paths and roads, water canals and aqueducts, while the restrictions were localities, Ramsar sites and faults. The biomass power plant is technically and geographically feasible. The geographical coordinates of the potential site of the biomass power plant that fulfils all the criteria are 32°29'29.72″N and 115°15'39.45″W.

Resumen: Objetivo: Describir el proceso de construcción y validación del instrumento educación, el cual tiene un diseño posintervención, para la promoción de la salud y vigilancia de enfermedades crónicas no transmisibles (ECNT) en comunidades quilombolas brasileñas. Metodología: Se trata de un estudio metodológico para validar un instrumento, que mezcla investigación cuantitativa y cualitativa, realizado en las comunidades quilombolas en el municipio de Capela/Sergipe, Brasil. Como primera etapa de la construcción del instrumento, se identificó el perfil social y clínico, al mismo tiempo que se ejecutaron las acciones de educación sanitaria sobre la prevención de enfermedades y estilos de vida saludables. Esto tenía el fin de identificar los déficits de información, fragancias y potencialidades en el entorno de las quilombolas. Para la validación del instrumento educativo, se calculó el índice de validez del contenido. Resultados: El índice de validez del contenido se obtuvo en el orden de 0.94. Las quilombolas presentan varias debilidades para el desarrollo de la ECNT, pero las potencialidades pueden fortalecerse y trabajarse en las oportunidades, destacando la importancia de las estrategias educativas para la prevención de problemas de salud. Conclusión: El proceso de validación mostró que el folleto se consideraba válido para la educación y la salud en las comunidades quilombolas, porque es atractivo, confiable y fácil de entender para este grupo de población. Se concluye que el objetivo propuesto se logró, ya que el folleto educativo titulado "Aprenda cómo cuidar su salud" fue validado para el diseño y el contenido con especialistas y la facilidad de comprensión con los líderes de las comunidades quilombolas.


Abstract: Objective: To describe the process of construction and validation of an educational instrument, with a post-intervention design, for health promotion and surveillance of non-communicable chronic diseases (CNCDS) in Brazilian Quilombola communities. Methodology: This is a methodological study to validate an instrument with a mixed study of quantitative and qualitative research, carried out in Quilombolas communities in the municipality of Capela/Sergipe, state Brazil. As the first stage of the construction of the educational instrument, the social and clinical profile was identified, concomitantly with health education actions on the prevention of healthy diseases and lifestyles, in order to identify the information deficits, Fragilities and potentialities in the Quilombola environment. For the validation of the educational instrument, the content validity index was calculated. Results: The content validity index was obtained in the order of 0.94. The Quilombolas present several weaknesses for the development of CNCDS, however the potentialities can be strengthened and the opportunities worked, highlighting the importance of educational strategies for the prevention of health problems. Conclusion: The validation process showed that the booklet was considered valid for education and health in Quilombola communities, because it is attractive, reliable and easy to understand for this population group. It is concluded that the proposed objective was achieved, the educational booklet titled "Learn how to care for your health" was validated for layout and content with specialists, and the ease of understanding with community leaders Quilombolas.

The COVID-19 pandemic due to the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus has directly impacted the public health and economy worldwide. To overcome this problem, countries have adopted different policies and non-pharmaceutical interventions for controlling the spread of the virus. This paper proposes the COVID-ABS, a new SEIR (Susceptible-Exposed-Infected-Recovered) agent-based model that aims to simulate the pandemic dynamics using a society of agents emulating people, business and government. Seven different scenarios of social distancing interventions were analyzed, with varying epidemiological and economic effects: (1) do nothing, (2) lockdown, (3) conditional lockdown, (4) vertical isolation, (5) partial isolation, (6) use of face masks, and (7) use of face masks together with 50% of adhesion to social isolation. In the impossibility of implementing scenarios with lockdown, which present the lowest number of deaths and highest impact on the economy, scenarios combining the use of face masks and partial isolation can be the more realistic for implementation in terms of social cooperation. The COVID-ABS model was implemented in Python programming language, with source code publicly available. The model can be easily extended to other societies by changing the input parameters, as well as allowing the creation of a multitude of other scenarios. Therefore, it is a useful tool to assist politicians and health authorities to plan their actions against the COVID-19 epidemic.

There are limited economic and reliable tools to monitor the effects of airborne particulate matter PM originating from rapid industrialization, urbanization, population growth, and economic development. It is now well established that urban PM contains magnetic particles along with other air pollutants. The velocity and temporal variability of the deposition of such PM on tree leaves are subject to the pollution sources, climate, and local atmospheric conditions. Therefore, these variables have to be taken into account during a biomonitoring. This study presents a magnetic biomonitoring in the city of Querétaro. In the city's metropolitan area, the most abundant and perennial tree species for biomonitoring is Ficus benjamina. For leaves of this species, the number of days needed for collection NDNC was measured, taking into account the meteorological conditions and the time at which they reached the saturation of airborne PM (pollutants). By means of sequential sampling, we identified that the minimum NDNC after a rainfall > 3 mm is 15 days. In such a period, total suspended particle TSP depositions reach its dynamic equilibrium. This behavior can be observed from measurements of specific magnetic susceptibility χ in Ficus benjamina samples and their comparison with TSP depositions collected with traditional Hi-Vol monitoring systems. After the NDNC calculation, a magnetic monitoring was performed with the biomonitor Ficus benjamina to evaluate the air quality at different sites in the metropolitan area every month for a period of 5 months. Values of χ ranged from 0.45 to 18.52 × 10-8m3kg-1. The species Ficus benjamina can be used as a biomonitor in the city of Querétaro only in seasons (winter-spring) with no or low rainfall. The species has the advantage of providing current PM information about a specific period of time.

Objective: To reflect about current pain management in cancer patients treated under the Brazilian Private Healthcare System, considering legal boundaries, access to essential drugs and involved ethical issues. Panelists aimed to reach a consensus about recommendations to increase access to proper analgesia for patients with cancer secondary pain. Methods: Four Brazilian specialists, being a radiation oncologist (and bioethicist), an oncologist, a pain specialist and a CEO of a private healthcare plan, met after the 2019 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) meeting, held in Chicago, and discussed the aforementioned subjects. A consensus was reached and is described below. Results: Cancer pain is prevailing in our country, probably undertreated, and may be a prevalent cause of medical services overuse, which may increase healthcare costs. Thus, there may be an opportunity to improve patient's quality of life, with a positive budget impact for private healthcare plans, if this treatment becomes mandatorily reimbursed. There are several studies in the literature showing similar results, but this should be prospectively studied, preferable using real word evidence, at the Brazilian scenario. Cancer pain treatment protocols, designed by specialists, should be designed in agreement with all stakeholders. Conclusion: Panelists agreed that pain treatment, which must be considered a human right, is a clear priority in Brazil. All stakeholders should collaborate in designing protocols to improve patient's quality of life, consequently improving health insurance's budgets. If so, this would have clear consequences in access to innovative cancer treatments, as those discussed during the 2019 ASCO meeting.


Objetivo: Refletir sobre o manejo atual da dor em pacientes com câncer atendidos no sistema de saúde privado brasileiro, considerando limites legais, acesso a medicamentos essenciais e questões éticas envolvidas. Os participantes do painel procuraram chegar a um consenso sobre recomendações para aumentar o acesso à analgesia adequada para pacientes com dor secundária ao diagnóstico de câncer. Métodos: Quatro especialistas brasileiros reuniram-se após a reunião da Sociedade Americana de Oncologia Clínica (ASCO) de 2019, realizada em Chicago, e discutiram os mencionados assuntos. Um consenso foi alcançado e é descrito abaixo. Resultados: A dor oncológica prevalece em nosso país, provavelmente subtratada, e pode ser uma causa predominante de uso excessivo de serviços médicos, o que pode aumentar os custos com saúde. Assim, pode haver uma oportunidade de melhorar a qualidade de vida do paciente, com um impacto orçamentário positivo para planos de saúde privados, se esse tratamento for obrigatoriamente reembolsado. Existem vários estudos na literatura que mostram resultados semelhantes, mas isso deve ser estudado prospectivamente, preferencialmente usando evidências provenientes de dados de mundo real, no cenário brasileiro. Os protocolos de tratamento da dor do câncer, preparados por especialistas, devem ser elaborados de acordo com todas as partes interessadas. Conclusão: Os participantes do painel concordaram que o tratamento da dor, que deve ser considerado um direito humano, é uma clara prioridade no Brasil. Todas as partes interessadas devem colaborar na elaboração de protocolos para melhorar a qualidade de vida do paciente, consequentemente melhorando os orçamentos do seguro de saúde. Nesse caso, isso teria consequências claras no acesso a tratamentos inovadores contra o câncer, como os discutidos durante a reunião da ASCO em 2019.

Background: The use of smart pump technology has shown to be profitable in the intensive care unit (ICU) because it avoids costs from prevented medication errors and allows for savings on disposables and medications by establishing standardized concentrations and dosing units. Objective: The objective of the study is to evaluate the economic impact of the implementation of smart infusion pumps in the consumption of intravenous (IV) solutions in an ICU. Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted with a pre-post design. The study occurred in the adult ICU of the Hospital Juárez de México. The pattern of consumption of IV solutions (sodium chloride 9%, Hartmann's solution, dextrose 5% and 10%, sodium chloride 0.9% with dextrose 5%) was analyzed preimplementation and postimplementation of 50 Plum A+™ pumps with Hospira MedNet™ security software. Using the TreeAge Pro 2016 software, deterministic and probabilistic analyses were carried out (10 000 Monte Carlo simulations) to confirm the robustness of the annual consumption comparison and the associated expenses before and after implementing smart technology. Results: The implementation of the smart pumps reduced the annual consumption of IV solutions to 8994 units (18%) and 3649 liters (22.3%). In the first year, MXN$55 850.97 were saved. From an institutional perspective and with a probability of 0.63, the use of MedNet™ technology proved to be a lower cost alternative (17.1% saved) with respect to the conventional infusion systems. Conclusion: The implementation of smart infusion pumps allows savings, specifically for the IV solutions used in ICU.

In this work, the antioxidant properties of methanolic extract of Larrea tridentata were assessed through the free radical scavenging method, ferric reducing antioxidant power and oxygen radical absorbance capacity. The phenolic acids content in the extract was quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and the total phenol content by the Folin-Ciocalteu method. The extract was used as an antioxidant in biodiesel from canola oil composed mostly by fatty acid methyl esters identified and quantified by gas chromatography-mass spectrophotometry (GC-MS). The performance of the extract as an antioxidant was assessed by the oxidative stability index (OSI) with a Rancimat equipment at 100, 110, 120 and 130 °C. Additionally, the change of the peroxide value (PV) and the higher heating value under conditions of oxidative stress at 100 °C and air injection were measured. The antioxidant capacity of the extract reached 50,000 TAEC (micromole of Trolox antioxidant equivalent capacity per gram). The biodiesel was constituted by more than 70% of unsaturated fatty acid methyl esters (FAME), mainly methyl oleate. The time needed to reach a PV of 100 meqO2/kg was almost four times longer with an antioxidant concentration of 250 mg/L than the blank. The biodiesel showed an OSI time of 1.25 h at 110 °C, while it increased to 8.8, 15.89 and 32.27 h with the antioxidant at concentrations of 250, 500 and 1000 mg/L, respectively. The methanolic Larrea tridentata extract proved to have an antioxidant capacity and it is a green antioxidant in biodiesel to increase its oxidative stability. According to the results obtained, the L. tridentata methanolic extract is an alternative to the commercial synthetic antioxidants used in biodiesel nowadays.

The increasing geographical spread and disease incidence of arboviral infections are among the greatest public health concerns in the Americas. The region has observed an increasing trend in dengue incidence in the last decades, evolving from low to hyperendemicity. Yellow fever incidence has also intensified in this period, expanding from sylvatic-restricted activity to urban outbreaks. Chikungunya started spreading pandemically in 2005 at an unprecedented pace, reaching the Americas in 2013. The following year, Zika also emerged in the region with an explosive outbreak, carrying devastating congenital abnormalities and neurologic disorders and becoming one of the greatest global health crises in years. The inadequate arbovirus surveillance in the region and the lack of serologic tests to differentiate among viruses poses substantial challenges. The evidence for vector control interventions remains weak. Clinical management remains the mainstay of arboviral disease control. Currently, only yellow fever and dengue vaccines are licensed in the Americas, with several candidate vaccines in clinical trials. The Global Arbovirus Group of Experts provides in this article an overview of progress, challenges, and recommendations on arboviral prevention and control for countries of the Americas.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate abdominal strength in professional soccer players and compare the findings to their lower body strength. An observational design was used to examine abdominal and lower body strength using two functional performance tests (a lower body isokinetic test and an isometric abdominal test, respectively). One hundred and thirty-two professional male soccer players from Cyprus's first and second divisions participated in this study. Testing included three and twenty-five maximal concentric flexion and extension repetitions at angle speeds of 60°/s (degrees/second) and 300°/s, respectively. On a separate occasion, participants completed two trials on an isometric device (ABTEST Gen. 3 system) for evaluation of abdominal strength. At both isokinetic speeds of 300°/s and 60°/s, abdominal strength had low to moderate significant correlations (p < .05) with quadriceps and hamstring strength. Coefficients of determination (R2) demonstrated that the variability in isokinetic variables accounted for only 14-16% of the variability of abdominal strength. Abdominal strength appears to be high in professional soccer players, but is not dependent on the sports level and/or a playing position. The results of this study demonstrate that abdominal strength and knee joint strength need to be evaluated separately.

Brazil recently began granting timber concessions in public forests to promote sustainable forest use. The effectiveness of this strategy hinges on the design and implementation of the concessions themselves as well as their competitive position within the logging sector as a whole. There is, however, a lack of information on the competitive interaction between legal and illegal logging and its effects on concessions profits. We address this knowledge gap by using a spatially explicit simulation model of the Amazon timber industry to examine the potential impact of illegal logging on timber concessions allocation and profits in a 30-year harvest cycle. In a scenario in which illegal logging takes place outside concessions, including private and public "undesignated" lands, concession harvested area would decrease by 59% due to competition with illegal logging. Moreover, 29 out of 39 National Forests (≈74%) would experience a decrease in harvested area. This "leakage" effect could reduce concession net rents by up to USD 1.3 Billion after 30 years. Federal and State "undesignated" lands, if not adequately protected, could have 40% of their total volume illegally harvested in 30 years. Our results reinforce the need to invest in tackling illegal logging, if the government wants the forest concessions program to be successful.

Use of acute-phase proteins (APPs) for assessment of health and disease in animals has increased greatly within the last decade. The objective was to determine the normal concentration of APPs in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of healthy cattle by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Fifty crossbred animals (350±70kg of BW and 18±1.2 months of age), 25 heifers and 25 steers were used. CSF samples were collected from atlanto-occipital (AO) site and blood samples were obtained from the jugular vein. CSF and serum protein electrophoresis were performed by means of sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Thirty-seven proteins with molecular weights ranging from 7 and 37kDa were identified in CSF of all animals. These eight were nominally identified with immunoglobulin A and G, celuloplasmin, transferrin, albumin, α1-antitripsin, acidic glycoprotein, and haptoglobin. All protein fractions in CSF did not differ between heifers and steers. In sera, 34 proteins with molecular weights between 7 and 244kDa were identified in heifers and steers. Similar proteins were nominally identified in the sera, but only the CSF presented α1-antitripsin. The serum values of acidic glycoprotein and immunoglobulin G were significantly higher in steers compared with heifers. In conclusion, measurement of CSF acute phase protein concentrations can be useful in diagnosing and monitoring the progression of bovine neurological diseases, perhaps even to guide therapeutic procedures. The CSF electrophoretic profile of healthy cattle does not change depending on gender.(AU)


O uso de proteínas de fase aguda (PFAs) para a avaliação da saúde e da doença em animais de produção tem aumentado consideravelmente na última década. O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar a concentração normal de PAFs no soro e no líquido cefalorraquidiano (LCR) de bovinos sadios por meio da eletroforese em gel de poliacrilamida. Foram avaliados cinquenta animais mestiços (350±70kg de PV e 18±1,2 meses de idade), 25 novilhas e 25 novilhos. As amostras de LCR foram colhidas no espaço atlanto-occipital (AO) e as amostras de sangue obtidas da veia jugular. As PAFs do soro e do LCR foram determinadas através da eletroforese em gel poliacrilamida. Trinta e sete proteínas com pesos moleculares que variaram entre 7 e 37kDa foram identificadas no LCR de todos os animais, independente do sexo. Estas oito proteínas foram nominalmente identificadas como imunoglobulina A e G, ceruloplasmina, transferrina, albumina, α1-antitripsina, glicoproteína ácida, e haptoglobina. As frações de proteínas presentes no LCR não diferiram entre novilhas e novilhos. No soro de machos e fêmeas, 34 proteínas com pesos moleculares entre 7 e 244 kDa foram identificadas. As proteínas do soro foram similarmente identificadas, entretanto a α1-antitripsina foi identificada somente no LCR. Os valores séricos de glicoproteína ácida e imunoglobulina G foram significativamente mais elevados nas novilhas em comparação aos novilhos. Em conclusão, a determinação das concentrações de proteínas de fase aguda presentes do LCR pode ser útil no diagnóstico e monitoramento da progressão de doenças neurológicas bovinas, talvez possa ainda direcionar procedimentos terapêuticos. O perfil eletroforético do LCR de bovinos hígidos não se altera em função do sexo.(AU)
