RESUMO

Corn crops require large amounts of resources that affect the environmental sustainability of dairy cow farming systems. The aim of the study was thus to investigate the effects of the replacement of corn silage (CS) with triticale silage (TS) by evaluating blood and productive parameters. The study lasted 7 weeks and involved two groups of 20 Italian Holstein Friesian dairy cows that were homogeneous in terms of parity ( 3 ± 1.5 ), days in milk (DIM) ( 150 ± 85.0 ), and daily milk production ( 26 ± 4.6  kg). Chemical analysis of feeds was carried out weekly. Dry-matter intake was estimated daily. At the beginning and end of the trial, haematological, metabolic, and immunological parameters were analysed. At the same, time body weight and body condition score were measured. Milk characteristics were also analysed weekly. Statistical analysis was performed by ANOVA on data of the second sampling, and a non-parametric test was performed to analyse BCS. Regarding the haematological parameters in the two groups, only lymphocyte values were not in the normal range (2.86 and 2.50 × 10 9  L for CS and TS, respectively). Metabolic parameters were in the normal range except for blood ureic nitrogen (BUN; 13.65 and 14.04  mg dL - 1 ), non-esterified fatty acids (NEFAs; 21.40 and 31.93  µ mol L - 1 ), and Cl (91.99 and 93.50  mmol L - 1 ). Hair cortisol was low (0.94 and 0.91  pg mg - 1 ), indicating the absence of stress signs, as confirmed by the results of other immunological parameters (serum lysozyme (SL), bactericidal activity (SBA), haptoglobin (HP), and oxygen free radicals (OFRs)). Statistical differences were not found either for haematological or biochemical parameters. The total replacement of CS with TS did not affect milk yield and composition. In conclusion, the replacement of CS by TS did not give rise to significant modifications in the parameters investigated and did not alter the health status of the animals, thus suggesting the feasibility of its introduction into the diet of mid-lactation dairy cows.

RESUMO

Cirrhosis, highly prevalent worldwide, develops after years of hepatic inflammation triggering progressive fibrosis. Currently, the main etiologies of cirrhosis are non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and alcohol-related liver disease, although chronic hepatitis B and C infections are still major etiological factors in some areas of the world. Recent studies have shown that liver fibrosis can be assessed with relatively high accuracy noninvasively by serological tests, transient elastography, and radiological methods. These modalities may be utilized for screening for liver fibrosis in at-risk populations. Thus far, a limited number of population-based studies using noninvasive tests in different areas of the world indicate that a significant percentage of subjects without known liver disease (around 5% in general populations and a higher rate -18% to 27%-in populations with risk factors for liver disease) have significant undetected liver fibrosis or established cirrhosis. Larger international studies are required to show the harms and benefits before concluding that screening for liver fibrosis should be applied to populations at risk for chronic liver diseases. Screening for liver fibrosis has the potential for changing the current approach from diagnosing chronic liver diseases late when patients have already developed complications of cirrhosis to diagnosing liver fibrosis in asymptomatic subjects providing the opportunity of preventing disease progression.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In 2016 the Administration of the Tuscany Region, Italy, established a health surveillance programme for workers with past asbestos exposure. The programme includes two levels of activities, a local basic health evaluation, and a centralized in-depth evaluation of specific cases. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the number and identify the workers with past exposure to asbestos in Tuscan industrial settings entitled to participate in the health surveillance programme. METHODS: The number of formerly-exposed workers was estimated from the records of the working population of 15,441 workers of thirteen Tuscan asbestos industrial plants and from the existing data bases of the Local Health Administrations (USLs) and the Institute for Study, Prevention and Cancer Network (ISPRO), and from national data bases such as Social Security Administration (INPS) and National Institute for Insurance against Accidents at Work (INAIL). The expected number of medical examinations per year was estimated from the adhesion rates seen in previous comparable programmes. RESULTS: The estimated number of workers with past asbestos exposure eligible to the programme was 5,446. The estimated number of health examinations in the first and second phases of the surveillance programme during 2016-24 was 7,275 and 7,155, respectively, follow-up examinations included. The number of workers identified from local data bases was 4,713: They had been operating in 129 plants that had been using asbestos in the past. Further 1,395 workers were identified from previous health surveillance activities. CONCLUSIONS: The use of several sources of information and the cooperation between occupational health services made it possible to identify a high proportion of former asbestos workers and plants., It is, nevertheless, still necessary to complete the list of eligible workers, and to facilitate their participation by making the programme more widely known.

RESUMO

The direct conversion of methane to methanol (MTM) is a reaction that has the potential to disrupt a great part of the synthesis gas-derived chemical industry. However, despite many decades of research, active enough catalysts and suitable processes for industrial application are still not available. Recently, several copper-exchanged zeolites have shown considerable activity and selectivity in the direct MTM reaction. Understanding the nature of the active site in these materials is essential for any further development in the field. Herein, we apply multivariate curve resolution analysis of X-ray absorption spectroscopy data to accurately quantify the fraction of active Cu in Cu-MOR (MOR = mordenite), allowing an unambiguous determination of the active site nuclearity as a dicopper site. By rationalizing the compositional parameters and reaction conditions, we achieve the highest methanol yield per Cu yet reported for MTM over Cu-zeolites, of 0.47 mol/mol.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To describe the design and present the baseline findings of the evaluation study of 'Paesaggi di Prevenzione', a school-based prevention program tackling smoking, alcohol misuse, dietary risks, and physical inactivity in 12- to 14-year-olds. METHODS: The program was implemented from January 2011 to April 2012 in Emilia-Romagna, Italy, and comprised classroom activities and school-wide policies. A two-arm cluster randomized controlled trial was designed. Schools were the units of randomization and were matched by socioeconomic status, size, and type. RESULTS: Data from 4700 middle school students and 2952 high school students were collected anonymously from October to December 2010. Past-30-day smoking prevalence was 1.9% among middle school students and 20.8% among high school students. Past-30-day prevalence of alcohol intoxication was 2.2% among middle school students and 11.4% among high school students. A total of 39.7% of middle school students and 48.0% of high school students drank sugar-sweetened beverages four or more times per week; 7.5% of middle school students and 7.1% of high school students had intense physical activity every day. CONCLUSIONS: This study seems adequately powered and baseline variables appear evenly distributed between study groups. Findings are in line with those of the WHO Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children study.

RESUMO

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Few school programs are effective in preventing adolescents' tobacco smoking initiation. The "Lega contro i Tumori - Luoghi di Prevenzione" is a cluster randomized controlled trial designed to evaluate a school-based peer-led smoking prevention intervention with extracurricular activities for students aged 14-15 years. This paper presents the study design and the baseline characteristics of the study population. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: Twenty secondary schools located in the Reggio Emilia province took part in the study. Five schools were excluded because they already participated in smoking prevention interventions. The schools were randomized to control or intervention arms. The study population consisted of students attending the first grade. Components of the intervention included 1) the out-of-school "Smoking Prevention Tour" (SPT) at the "Luoghi di Prevenzione" Center, a 4-hour (4 sessions) extracurricular activity; 2) the "Smoke-free Schools" intervention, combining a life-skills-based peer-led intervention at school, an in-depth lesson on one of the SPT sessions, and enforcement surveillance of the school antismoking policy. Tobacco use was studied through a questionnaire administered before and 6 months after the intervention. RESULTS: Eleven high schools and 9 vocational secondary schools took part in the study for a total of 2,476 out of 3,050 eligible students (81.2%). The proportions of respondents in high schools and vocational secondary schools were 90.9% and 64.5%, respectively (P <0.001). Intervention and control arms showed a different distribution of gender and school type, whereas no difference was observed in any tobacco-use characteristic. CONCLUSIONS: This study is one of the few Italian trials to evaluate the effectiveness of a school-based program for preventing smoking initiation.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Aim of the paper is to examine the characteristics and the trend of mortality in immigrants in Tuscany in the last decade, and to compare it with that observed in Italians resident in the same region. DESIGN: it is a descriptive study using the data 1997- 2008 of the Regional Mortality Registry of Tuscany. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Immigrants have been defined those who are resident in Tuscany with non Italian citizenship. They have been classified in immigrants from countries at high migration rates (PFPM) and immigrants from developed countries (PSA). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Proportional mortality for the period 1997-2008 and trends of standardized (standard: European population) mortality truncated rates (20-64 years) per 100 000 in the period 2002-2008 by citizenship (PFPM, PSA and Italians), gender, age-class and causes of death. RESULTS: In the period 1997-2008, in Tuscany, 4 755 deaths have been registered in immigrants: 3 055 residents (1 782 from PFPM and 1 273 from PSA) and 1 700 not residents. Trends for all and the main causes of death show an increasing gap in mortality between immigrants from PFPM and Italians, with higher rates for Italians. On the contrary infant mortality is higher in children from PFPM and the gap is increasing in the last years. Also the mortality for accidents (1° and 3° cause of death respectively in male and female PFPM) and the mortality for infectious diseases are higher in PFPM immigrants. CONCLUSION: Mortality study on immigrants in Tuscany highlighted specific health problems of this population deriving from living conditions in the home country as well in the host country. It will be necessary to continue to monitor the mortality trend and characteristics of this population because it represents a good indirect tool to evaluate his socioeconomic integration (considering also his use of our health system), and because this population is still expected to raise in the next decades.
