RESUMO

Third-party punishment plays a crucial role in fairness norm enforcement. The present study investigated how punishment cost would affect third-parties' behavioral and neural responses to unfairness using a modified Third-Party Dictator Game and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Participants acted as third-parties and decided how many monetary units (MUs) to invest to punish norm violations in two punishment cost contexts. Participants' every MU investment reduced dictators' payoff by 6 MUs in the low punishment cost context and 3 MUs in the high one. Participants' invested MUs reflected the cost they would like to pay to punish dictators while dictators' reduced MUs represented the amount of punishment they received. Behavioral results showed participants' fairness ratings were not affected by punishment cost. However, punishment amount decreased in the high punishment cost context where participants invested more MUs and spent more time for decision-making. Neurally, left anterior insula (AI) and bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) showed stronger responses to unfair relative to fair allocations in both contexts. Moreover, dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) was more active during unfair allocations in the high punishment cost context than in the low one and the difference of dACC activity between these two conditions was positively correlated with the difference of reaction times. Overall, the present study demonstrated that punishment cost would not affect people's fairness perception but increase the conflicts between norm enforcement and self-interest. The decision for punishment was the outcome of integrating fairness and economic considerations.

RESUMO

Migraine is a chronic brain disease that leads to periodic neurological attacks. Parishin A and isorhynchophylline (PI) is the active monomer component extracted from the traditional antimigraine Chinese medicinal combination of Gastrodia and Uncaria, respectively. In this study, using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) technology, we performed pharmacokinetic and lipidomic study on migraine model rats after administration of PI. For the detection of the compounds in plasma, AB Sciex Triple Quad™ 4500 was applied for quantitative analysis, and the COSMOSIL C18 column (2.1 × 100 mm, 2.6 µm) was used for separation. Isorhynchophylline (ISO: m/z 384.8-241.2) and its main metabolite rhynchophylline (RHY: m/z 384.8-160.2) were simultaneously detected under positive ion modes. Besides, parishin A (PA: m/z 995.1-726.9) and its main metabolite gastrodin (GAS: m/z 331.1-123.0) were simultaneously detected with negative ion modes. For the analysis of endogenous lipid components, Dionex Ultimate 3000 (UHPLC) Thermo Orbitrap Elite was applied for the detection, and the Waters UPLCRBEH C18 column (1.7 µm 100 ∗ 2.1 mm) was used for separation. Chloroform/methanol (2 : 1, v : v) was used for extraction. The results demonstrated that PI exists significant difference in metabolism between single- and coadministration and can regulate lipid levels associated with migraine.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess muscle injury associated with upper and lower closed limb fracture using ultrasound, and to develop ultrasound classification criteria for muscle injury. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty patients with limb fracture and muscle injury participated in this study. Ultrasonography was used to assess muscle fibre, hematoma, vascular injury, and diameter growth rate. Injury was classified into three grades according to the ultrasound imaging: scores of less than, equal to, or greater than 9. RESULTS: Of 30 patients, focal fibre rupture was observed in 11 cases; in 9 cases, the injured area exceeded 30% of the muscle area. Six patients had muscle hematoma (the largest reaching 39 mm); in 4 patients, the hematoma showed a honeycombed pattern. Vascular rupture was observed in 6 patients, of which 2 had decreased main arterial diameter and blood flow. The greatest increase in muscle thickness was 17 mm. Of all patients, 11 showed an increase in the diameter growth rate of the muscle exceeding 50%. In addition, among the 30 patients, 11 patients with scores ranging from 4 to 8 received conservative treatment; 9 patients with scores ranging from 10 to 14 received operative treatment; and 10 patients with scores equal to 9 received either conservative or operative treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Ultrasonography is useful for diagnosing muscle injury associated with closed limb fracture. The ultrasound classification criteria for muscle injury can be used to assess the severity of injury and guide the decision of treatment.

RESUMO

Few studies have focused on the cost of acupuncture treatments although acupuncture has become popular in the United States (U.S.). The purpose of the current study was to examine the out-of-pocket costs incurred from acupuncture services based on an online website, OkCopay.com. We examined descriptive statistics (range, median and 20% intervals) for the cost of acupuncture "first-time visits" and "follow-up visits" in 41 metropolitan regions in the U.S. The acupuncture prices of 723 clinics throughout 39 metropolitan regions were included, except for Birmingham, Alabama and Detroit, Michigan as there was no online data available at the time of the study for these two regions. The cost range for a first-time acupuncture visit was $15-400; the highest median was $150 in Charleston, South Carolina, while the lowest was $45 in St. Louis, Missouri. The top 10 cities for the highest median were: Baltimore, Washington, D.C., New York, San Francisco, San Jose, Boston, Atlanta, Seattle, Portland and Indianapolis, with the median $120, while the median for all 723 clinics was $112. For the follow-up visits, the cost range was $15-300; the highest median was $108 in Charleston, South Carolina, and the lowest $40 in Miami, Florida. The 10 cities with highest median follow-up acupuncture visit costs were: New York, Baltimore, New Orleans, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle, Boston and Atlanta, with the median $85, while for all 723 clinics the median price was $80. The estimation of the average gross annual income of each acupuncturist from the regions studied was $95,760, while the total annual cost of patients seeking acupuncture services in the U.S. was about $3.5 billion in 2018.

RESUMO

Chronic low-back pain (CLBP) is one of the most common pain conditions. Current clinical guidelines for low-back pain recommend acupuncture for CLBP. However, there are very few high-quality acupuncture studies on CLBP in older adults. Clinical acupuncture experts in the American Traditional Chinese Medicine Association (ATCMA) were interested in the recent grant on CLBP research announced by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. The ATCMA experts held an online discussion on the subject of real-world acupuncture treatments for CLBP in older adults. Seven participants, each with more than 20 years of acupuncture practice, discussed their own unique clinical experience while another participant talked about the potential mechanism of acupuncture in pain management. As a result of the discussion, a picture of a similar treatment strategy emerged across the participants for CLBP in older adults. This discussion shows that acupuncture may have complicated mechanisms in pain management, yet it is effective for the treatment of chronic pain involving maladaptive neuroplasticity; therefore, it should be effective for CLBP in older adults.

RESUMO

For the first time, the power law characteristics of stock price jump intervals have been empirically found generally in stock markets. The classical jump-diffusion model is described as the jump-diffusion model with power law (JDMPL). An artificial stock market (ASM) is designed in which an agent's investment strategies, risk appetite, learning ability, adaptability, and dynamic changes are considered to create a dynamically changing environment. An analysis of these data packets from the ASM simulation indicates that, with the learning mechanism, the ASM reflects the kurtosis, fat-tailed distribution characteristics commonly observed in real markets. Data packets obtained from simulating the ASM for 5010 periods are incorporated into a regression analysis. Analysis results indicate that the JDMPL effectively characterizes the stock price jumps in the market. The results also support the hypothesis that the time interval of stock price jumps is consistent with the power law and indicate that the diversity and dynamic changes of agents' investment strategies are the reasons for the discontinuity in the changes of stock prices.

RESUMO

The establishment of facile, rapid, sensitive and cost-effective protocols for the detection of heavy metals is of great significance for human health and environmental monitoring. Hereby, an ultra-facile and label-free immunoassay strategy was designed for detecting heavy metal ion by using Cu (II) as the model analyte. Cu (II) reacted previously with ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) was captured by immobilized monoclonal antibody for Cu (II)-EDTA chelate. Then Cu (II) was detected based on the self-enhancing effect of Cu (II)-EDTA chelate to luminol-H2O2 chemiluminescence reaction. The CL intensity is linear relative with Cu (II) concentration in a very wide range of 1.0-1000ng/mL, with a detection limit of 0.33ng/mL (S/N=3). Since the specificity of this proposed strategy relied on both the specificity of monoclonal antibody and the specificity of luminol-H2O2 system, it could avoid interference from most common ions. The proposed method was used successfully to detect Cu (II) in traditional Chinese medicine and environmental water samples with acceptable recovery values of 82-113%. This proof-of-principle work demonstrated the feasibility of the label-free immunoassay for heavy metal ions, and opened a new avenue for rapid screening and field assay for drug safety, environmental monitoring and clinical diagnosis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to evaluate the sensitivity requirement for LC-MS/MS as an analytical tool to characterize metabolites in plasma and urine at microdoses in rats and to investigate proportionality of metabolite exposure from a microdose of 1.67 µg/kg to a high dose of 5000 µg/kg for atorvastatin, ofloxacin, omeprazole and tamoxifen. RESULTS: Only the glucuronide metabolite of ofloxacin, the hydroxylation metabolite of omeprazole and the hydration metabolite of tamoxifen were characterized in rat plasma at microdose by LC-MS/MS. The exposure of detected metabolites of omeprazole and tamoxifen appeared to increase in a nonproportional manner with increasing doses. Exposure of ortho- and para-hydroxyatorvastatin, but not atorvastatin and lactone, increased proportionally with increasing doses. CONCLUSION: LC-MS/MS has demonstrated its usefulness for detecting and characterizing the major metabolites in plasma and urine at microdosing levels in rats. The exposure of metabolites at microdose could not simply be used to predict their exposure at higher doses.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the sensitivity requirement for LC-MS/MS as an analytical tool to support human microdosing study with sub-pharmacological dose, investigate proportionality of pharmacokinetics from the microdose to therapeutic human equivalent doses in rats and characterize circulating metabolites in rats administered with the microdose. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five drugs of antipyrine, metoprolol, carbamazepine, digoxin and atenolol were administered orally to male Sprague-Dawley rats at 0.167, 1.67, 16.7, 167 and 1,670 microg/kg doses. Plasma samples were extracted using either solid phase extraction or liquid-liquid extraction, and analyzed using LC-MS/MS. RESULTS: Using 100 microl of plasma sample, the lower limit of quantitation for antipyrine (10 pg/ml), carbamazepine (1 pg/ml), metoprolol (5 pg/ml), atenolol (20 pg/ml), and digoxin (5 pg/ml) were achieved using an API 5000. Proportional pharmacokinetics were observed from 0.167 microg/kg to 1,670 microg/kg for antipyrine and carbamazepine and from 1.67 to 1,670 microg/kg for atenolol and digoxin, while metoprolol exhibited a non-proportional pharmacokinetics relationship. Several metabolites of carbamazepine were characterized in plasma from rats dosed at 1.67 mug/kg using LC-MS/MS. CONCLUSIONS: This study has shown the promise of sensitive LC-MS/MS method to support microdose pharmacokinetics and drug metabolism studies in human.
