RESUMO

Fly ash from municipal solid waste incineration (MSWIFA) contains leachable heavy metals (HMs), and the environmental risk of contained HMs is an important concern for its safe treatment and disposal. This paper presents a dynamic leaching test of fly ash-based cementitious materials containing arsenic (FCAC) in three particle sizes based on an innovative simulation of two acid rainfall conditions to investigate the long-term stability of FCAC under acid rain conditions. As well as semi-dynamic leaching test by simulating FCAC in three scenarios. Furthermore, the long-term stability risk of FCAC is evaluated using a sequential extraction procedure (SEP) and the potential risk assessment index. Results showed that the Al3+ in the FCAC dissolved and reacted with the OH- in solution to form Al(OH)3 colloids as the leaching time increased. Moreover, the oxidation of sulfide minerals in the slag produced oxidants, such as H2SO4 and Fe2(SO4)3, which further aggravated the oxidative dissolution of sulfides, thereby resulting in an overall decreasing pH value of the leachate. In addition, due to the varying particle sizes of the FCAC, surface area size, and adsorption site changes, the arsenic leaching process showed three stages of leaching characteristics, namely, initial, rapid, and slow release, with a maximum leaching concentration of 2.42 mg/L, the cumulative release of 133.78 mg/kg, and the cumulative release rate of 2.32%. The SEP test revealed that the reduced state of HMs in the raw slag was lowered substantially, and the acid extractable state and residual state of HMs were increased, which was conducive to lessening the risk of FCAC. Overall, the geological polymerization reaction of MSWIFA is a viable and promising solution to stabilize mining and industrial wastes and repurpose the wastes into construction materials.

Can Tho city in the Mekong Delta is in the top ten areas affected by climate change. Therefore, assessing climate change impacts, social and economic activities require proposed solutions to respond to climate change. This study aims to (i) apply the MIKE 11 model (Hydrodynamic module and Advection-Dispersion module) to simulate the impacts of climate change scenarios on water resources in Can Tho city; (ii) calculate water balance in Can Tho city; and (iii) suggest climate change adaptation plan for sustainable social-economic activities of the city. The results show that when the rainfall changes due to climate change, the flow rate tends to decrease at high tide and increase at low tide. When the sea level rises due to climate change, the flow rate tends to increase at high tide and decrease at low tide. For 2030, the flow will decrease up to 15.6% and 14.3% at the low tide period for RCP 2.6 and RCP 8.5 compared to the present, respectively. The flow will increase up to 63.5% and 58.9% at the high tide period for RCP 2.6 and RCP 8.5 compared to the present, respectively. The water demand evaluation shows that the water resource reserve in Can Tho city meets water demands in current and future scenarios under climate change. While rainwater and groundwater can provide enough water in the rainy season, the city has to use surface water during the dry season due to a lack of rainwater. Of these, agriculture contributes the most water demands (85%). Eight adaptation measures to climate change for Can Tho city are developed from 2021 to 2050.

PURPOSE: To assess the out-of-field surface and internal dose of the 1.5 T MR-Linac compared to the conventional external beam linac using optically stimulated luminescence dosimeters (OSLDs), and evaluate the out-of-field dose calculation accuracy of the Monaco treatment planning system (TPS) of the 1.5T MR-Linac. METHODS: A cubic solid water phantom, with OSLDs on the surface, was vertically irradiated by MR-Linac square fields with different sizes. In addition, OSLDs were arranged out of the beam edges in four directions. An anthropomorphic adult phantom, with 125 cm3 simulated volume, was irradiated in four orthogonal directions by both MR-Linac and conventional linac at the head, thoracic, and pelvic sites. Out-of-field doses were measured by OSLDs on both the surface and internal emulational organs at risk (OARs). The results were compared to the simulated dose from Monaco TPS. RESULTS: At different field sizes (5 × 5 to 20 × 20 cm2 ) and distances (1 to 10 cm) to beam edge, the out-of-field surface dose measured on MR-Linac varied from 0.16 % (10 cm to 5 × 5 cm2 edge) to 7.02 % (1 cm to 20 × 20 cm2 edge) of the maximum dose laterally and from 0.14 % (10 cm to 5 × 5 cm2 edge) to 8.56 % (1 cm to 20 × 20 cm2 edge) of the maximum dose longitudinally. Compared to the OSLDs measured data, the Monaco TPS presented an overestimate of the out-of-field dose of OARs at 0-2 % isodose area on both surface and internal check points, and the overestimation gets greater as the distance increases. The underestimation was found to be 0-35% at 2-5% isodose area on both surface and internal check points. Compared to the conventional linac, MR-Linac delivered higher average values of out-of-field dose on surface check points (20%, 19%, 21%) and internal simulated OARs (42%, 37%, 9%) of the anthropomorphic phantom at head, thoracic, and pelvic irradiations, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Compared to the conventional linac, MR-Linac has the same out-of-field dose distribution. However, considering the absolute dose values, MR-Linac delivered relatively higher out-of-field doses on both surface and internal OARs. Additional radiation shielding to patients undergoing MR-Linac may provide protection from out-of-field exposure.

Background Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and functional MRI techniques have been widely used in the diagnosis of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection related diseases. Purpose To explore whether magnetic resonance diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) can track water molecular diffusion changes in the brain of asymptomatic HIV-positive adolescents. Material and Methods Multi-b value DWI was performed in 23 adolescents, including 15 HIV-positive participants and eight HIV-negative healthy participants. Mean apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), slow apparent diffusion coefficient (ADCs) values, fast apparent diffusion coefficient (ADCf) values, distribution diffusion coefficient (DDC) values, and heterogeneity index (α) values were calculated within regions of interest (ROIs) in the frontal lobes, basal ganglia, and temporal lobe. Non-parametric tests were then performed. Results In the bilateral frontal lobes, the mean α values in HIV-positive participants were significantly increased compared with those in healthy participants (right side P = 0.001; left side P = 0.000). In the left frontal lobe, the mean DDC value in HIV-positive participants was significantly increased compared with that in healthy participants ( P = 0.008). In the bilateral frontal lobes, the mean ADCf values in HIV-positive participants were significantly lower than those in healthy participants (right side P = 0.011; left side P = 0.008). In the left basal ganglia, the mean α values in HIV-positive participants were significantly lower than that in healthy participants ( P = 0.013). Conclusion Multi-b value DWI could reflect the early characteristics of water molecule diffusion in HIV infections.

p21 is a cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor, which can arrest cell proliferation and serve as a tumor suppressor. Though many studies were published to assess the relationship between p21 rs1059234 polymorphism and various cancer risks, there was no definite conclusion on this association. To derive a more precise quantitative assessment of the relationship, a large scale meta-analysis of 5,963 cases and 8,405 controls from 16 eligible published case-control studies was performed. Our analysis suggested that rs1059234 was not associated with the integral cancer risk for both dominant model [(T/T+C/T) vs C/C, OR=1.00, 95% CI: 0.84-1.18] and recessive model [T/T vs (C/C+C/T), OR=1.03, 95% CI: 0.93-1.15)]. However, further stratified analysis showed rs1059234 was greatly associated with the risk of squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck (SCCHN). Thus, larger scale primary studies are still required to further evaluate the interaction of p21 rs1059234 polymorphism and cancer risk in specific cancer subtypes.

Chemical synthesis of DNA sequences provides a powerful tool for modifying genes and for studying gene function, structure and expression. Here, we report a simple, high-fidelity and cost-effective PCR-based two-step DNA synthesis (PTDS) method for synthesis of long segments of DNA. The method involves two steps. (i) Synthesis of individual fragments of the DNA of interest: ten to twelve 60mer oligonucleotides with 20 bp overlap are mixed and a PCR reaction is carried out with high-fidelity DNA polymerase Pfu to produce DNA fragments that are approximately 500 bp in length. (ii) Synthesis of the entire sequence of the DNA of interest: five to ten PCR products from the first step are combined and used as the template for a second PCR reaction using high-fidelity DNA polymerase pyrobest, with the two outermost oligonucleotides as primers. Compared with the previously published methods, the PTDS method is rapid (5-7 days) and suitable for synthesizing long segments of DNA (5-6 kb) with high G + C contents, repetitive sequences or complex secondary structures. Thus, the PTDS method provides an alternative tool for synthesizing and assembling long genes with complex structures. Using the newly developed PTDS method, we have successfully obtained several genes of interest with sizes ranging from 1.0 to 5.4 kb.
