BACKGROUND: Over the past several decades the prevalence of adolescent non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) has been rising steadily. Understanding the factors associated with NSSI is a critical public health concern. The current study aims to explore the critical factors related to NSSI among Chinese adolescents. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted to identify the studies meeting our eligibility criteria (published until June 2022) in PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct, Springer Link, CNKI, VIP, and Wanfang data. The meta-package of R language was used to perform a meta-analysis to compute the pooled effect (r). RESULTS: A total of 59 studies were included in this analysis, with a sample size of 192,546. Twenty-four democratic, personal, and social factors were examined in current study. The pooled effect value (r) has revealed that 23 factors are associated with NSSI behaviors among Chinese adolescents. The factor, Internet addiction, has demonstrated the greatest association with NSSI compared to other factors. CONCLUSION: Consistent with previous studies on adolescent NSSI, findings have demonstrated that a number of demographic, personal, and social factors significantly contribute to NSSI behaviors among Chinese adolescents. Future research on prevention and intervention for adolescent NSSI may benefit from targeting these factors.

With the rapid development and high therapeutic efficiency and biosafety of gas-involving theranostics, hydrogen medicine has been particularly outstanding because hydrogen gas (H2), a microbial-derived gas, has potent anti-oxidative, anti-apoptotic, and anti-inflammatory activities in many disease models. Studies have suggested that H2-enriched saline/water alleviates colitis in murine models; however, the underlying mechanism remains poorly understood. Despite evidence demonstrating the importance of the microbial hydrogen economy, which reflects the balance between H2-producing (hydrogenogenic) and H2-utilizing (hydrogenotrophic) microbes in maintaining colonic mucosal ecosystems, minimal efforts have been exerted to manipulate relevant H2-microbe interactions for colonic health. Consistent with previous studies, we found that administration of hydrogen-rich saline (HS) ameliorated dextran sulfate sodium-induced acute colitis in a mouse model. Furthermore, we demonstrated that HS administration can increase the abundance of intestinal-specific short-chain fatty acid (SCFA)-producing bacteria and SCFA production, thereby activating the intracellular butyrate sensor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ signaling and decreasing the epithelial expression of Nos2, consequently promoting the recovery of the colonic anaerobic environment. Our results also indicated that HS administration ameliorated disrupted intestinal barrier functions by modulating specific mucosa-associated mucolytic bacteria, leading to substantial inhibition of opportunistic pathogenic Escherichia coli expansion as well as a significant increase in the expression of interepithelial tight junction proteins and a decrease in intestinal barrier permeability in mice with colitis. Exogenous H2 reprograms colonocyte metabolism by regulating the H2-gut microbiota-SCFAs axis and strengthens the intestinal barrier by modulating specific mucosa-associated mucolytic bacteria, wherein improved microbial hydrogen economy alleviates colitis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In the intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) era, the role of concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) after induction chemotherapy (IC) in locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (LANPC) is undetermined, while concerns exist about CCRT-associated excessive toxicity. We aimed to combine tumor response and risk assessment to guide decisions about concurrent chemotherapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From April 2009 to December 2015, 744 LANPC patients treated with CCRT/IMRT after IC were included. Matching techniques were performed for treatment effect evaluation. Tumor response to IC was used for patient stratification. A nomogram was built based on multivariable Cox regression analysis to predict overall survival (OS). RESULTS: After IC, 508 patients (68.3%) had favorable tumor response (complete or partial response), among whom IC + CCRT achieved significantly superior 5-year disease-free survival and OS than IC + IMRT (82.2% vs. 72.5%, P = 0.025; 89.2% vs. 79.9%, P = 0.025). However, no significant difference was found in patients with unfavorable response (both P > 0.05). For favorable responders, a nomogram was built integrating age, smoking, T category, N category, pretreatment Epstein-Barr virus DNA and treatment modality. The concordance index was 0.713 and calibration was good. The nomogram determined three risk groups with distinct OS. High-risk patients benefited from CCRT after IC regarding disease-free survival, OS and distant metastasis-free survival, whereas low- and intermediate-risk patients did not. CONCLUSIONS: For LANPC patients with unfavorable response to IC, subsequent CCRT seems inadequate, rendering intensification necessary. For favorable responders with low risk, IC + IMRT represents a reasonable de-intensification approach, although confirmation by prospective data is needed.

Mercury, particularly methylmercury, can accumulate through food webs and generate high risks for species at higher trophic levels. Inorganic mercury can be methylated into the organic species methylmercury if suitable reducing conditions exist, for example, in hotspots like oilfields. We developed a conceptual model to conduct an ecological risk assessment based on the food web structure of the Shengli oilfield area, China. The model can identify species at risk and elucidate the sources of risks according to their diet. A risk rating criteria was developed based on the food web structure to categorize the different levels of risks for different species. As expected, the results indicate increasing risks for the biota higher in the food web hierarchy. Grasshoppers were mostly at no risk throughout the study area, whereas grubs at southwest were at minimal risks due to local high Hg concentration in the soil. Mantises, which are insect predators, were also at minimal risk. Herbivorous birds with similar feeding habits than grasshoppers were at no risk, but omnivorous and carnivorous birds were at moderate risk. The conceptual model is a useful tool to improve pollution remediation and establish risk control strategies based on ecological risks of the food web rather than just Hg concentrations in the environment.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy and safety of tamsulosin, an α(1A)-adrenoceptor antagonist, as a potential male contraceptive. METHODS: Forty healthy male volunteers were equally divided into 2 groups, each of which received placebo and tamsulosin sequentially in a crossover manner. Ejaculatory profile was examined 4 to 6 hours after administration and adverse effects were noted. RESULTS: Anejaculation occurred in all subjects after taking 0.8-mg of tamsulosin. Total functional sperm count was significantly reduced in subjects after taking 0.4-mg of tamsulosin. Six subjects receiving 0.8-mg of tamsulosin complained of tolerated discomfort, which disappeared 10 hours after administration. CONCLUSION: When administered at 0.8 mg, tamsulosin can cause anejaculation with some transient side effects. Our results imply that tamsulosin and related drugs might potentially be used as male contraceptive agents in the future, which needs more studies to verify.

OBJECTIVE: To explore a simple and inexpensive method or procedure for establishing primary culture and purification of olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) from the adult rat olfactory bulbs. METHODS: The OECs were dissociated from the first two outer layers of the olfactory bulbs of the adult Sprague-Dawley rat (2.5 months old), cultured in DMEM/F12 nutrient with 20% foetal calf serum, and purified by the method of combining the different rates of cell attachment with the Arabinosylcytosine (AraC) inhibition of cell. The morphological changes of cultured OECs were observed. On 14th culture day, the OECs in culture were identified by the immunocytochemistry technique to glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and nerve growth factor receptor p75 (NGFRp75), and the purity of the positive cells was calculated. RESULTS: The cultured OECs presented three main morphological types: multipolar, bipolar and flat cells. For GFAP positive cells, the plasma and processes were stained while the nuclei were not, but for NGFRp75 cells the nuclei were stained more deeply than the plasma and processes. More than 9000 cultured cells were identified to be OECs. CONCLUSION: The high purity OECs can be cultured successfully in vitro by the combined purification method. This method is simple and inexpensive.

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of a new hepatitis C virus (HCV) core antigen assay developed in China. METHODS: After the determination of HCV infection, 49 serial samples were selected from 11 regular plasma donors in 5 different plasma stations. To compare the performance of HCV core antigen detection and HCV PCR, these samples were genotyped, and each specimen was analyzed by ELISA for the detection of HCV core antigen and by qualitative HCV PCR. RESULTS: Among all of the sequential samples, the original 13 specimens were HCV RNA-negative, and 36 samples were HCV RNA-positive. Twenty-seven samples (75%) were HCV core antigen-positive from these HCV RNA-positive specimens. Conversely, 27 samples (93.1%) were found HCV RNA-positive in HCV core antigen-positive samples. Intervals between HCV RNA and HCV core antigen-positive, as well as between HCV core antigen-positive and HCV antibody-positive were 36.0 and 32.8 d, respectively. CONCLUSION: This HCV core antigen assay, developed in China, is able to detect much of anti-HCV-negative, HCV RNA-positive preseroconversion window period (PWP) plasma donations.
