BACKGROUND: Female agricultural workers contribute to 37% of the total agricultural workforce in India, however, most self-propelled machinery is designed for male agricultural workers. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective was to determine the impact of the ergo-refined operator's workplace on various aspects of operator performance and comfort, including actuating force, posture, and physiological parameters. METHODS: Experiments were carried out in real field conditions using a full factorial randomized design. Twelve female operators participated in the study, and measurements were taken for control lever actuating force, operator posture, heart rate, and other relevant parameters. RESULTS: The ergo-refined operator's workplace intervention resulted in significant reductions in actuating force for various control levers, angles of joints, working heart rate (WHR), oxygen consumption rate (OCR), muscle load, and whole-body vibration (WBV) acceleration. These reductions were observed under different operating conditions. CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that the ergo-refined operator's workplace is effective in enhancing operator comfort and reducing physical strain during the operation of riding type self-propelled machines. It contributes to improved safety, comfort, and operational efficiency for operators working in field conditions. ANOVA and MANOVA analyses confirmed the positive impact of operating conditions and engine speed on the measured parameters when using the ergo-refined operator's workplace.

This paper focuses on exergo-enviro-economic and yearly productivity analyses for conical passive solar still having the potential to fulfil the sustainable development goal of the United Nations. A new approach for thermal modelling of conical passive solar still has been carried out with experimental validation in the present work, wherein different weather conditions have been considered for the analysis of the proposed system. The carried out work has been done for each month of the year. In further methodology, the computational code in MATLAB has been used for the computation of hourly freshwater production, exergy, and energy followed by the estimation of their annual values. Thereafter, exergo-enviro-economic parameters, yearly productivity, payback period, and freshwater cost have been estimated, and the obtained results have been compared with the earlier published research. Concludingly, the exergo-economic parameter, enviro-economic parameter, and yearly productivity for the proposed system have been found higher by 44.25%, 25.68%, and 44.07%, respectively, than the conventional solar still. The comparative freshwater cost is 13.56% less than the conventional solar still for 0.025 m water depth. Additionally, the payback period for the proposed system will remain at 2.75 years, which is 13.82% less in comparison to the conventional solar still considering a 2% interest rate.

Azo compounds represent the most diverse group of colorants widely employed in industrial sectors. Being highly toxic and recalcitrant compound, azo dyes pose a threat to plants, animals, and humans. In the present report, bio-decolorization of azo dye, reactive black 5, was evaluated by newly isolated Priestia sp. RA1. Strain RA1 was able to decolorize 97% of 100 ppm reactive black 5 in 60 h. Specific activity of dye decolorization was found to be 0.233 µmol min-1 g-1 dry cells. Successful decolorization over a broad range of pH, salinity, temperature, and initial dye concentration was observed. Phytotoxicity assay on agriculturally important crops showed considerable difference in percentage seed germination and growth when treated with original and bio-decolorized dye samples. Bio-decolorization at high dye concentrations, promising decolorization rate, and non-toxic nature of treated products suggest the potential of strain RA1 for bioremediation of dye-contaminated water and its re-use in the industries.

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are the biopolymer of choice if we look for a substitute of petroleum-based non-biodegradable plastics. Microbial production of PHAs as carbon reserves has been studied for decades and PHAs are gaining attention for a wide range of applications in various fields. Still, their uneconomical production is the major concern largely attributed to high cost of organic substrates for PHA producing heterotrophic bacteria. Therefore, microalgae/cyanobacteria, being photoautotrophic, prove to have an edge over heterotrophic bacteria. They have minimal metabolic requirements, such as inorganic nutrients (CO2, N, P, etc.) and light, and they can survive under adverse environmental conditions. PHA production under photoautotrophic conditions has been reported from cyanobacteria, the only candidate among prokaryotes, and few of the eukaryotic microalgae. However, an efficient cultivation system is still required for photoautotrophic PHA production to overcome the limitations associated with (1) stringent management of closed photobioreactors and (2) optimization of monoculture in open pond culture. Thus, a hybrid system is a necessity, involving the participation of microalgae/cyanobacteria and bacteria, i.e., both photoautotrophic and heterotrophic components having mutual interactive benefits for each other under different cultivation regime, e.g., mixotrophic, successive two modules, consortium based, etc. Along with this, further strategies like optimization of culture conditions (N, P, light exposure, CO2 dynamics, etc.), bioengineering, efficient downstream processes, and the application of mathematical/network modeling of metabolic pathways to improve PHA production are the key areas discussed here. Conclusively, this review aims to critically analyze cyanobacteria as PHA producers and proposes economically sustainable production of PHA from microbial autotrophs and heterotrophs in "hybrid biological system."

Innovative approaches are urgently required to alleviate the growing pressure on agriculture to meet the rising demand for food. A key challenge for plant biology is to bridge the notable knowledge gap between our detailed understanding of model plants grown under laboratory conditions and the agriculturally important crops cultivated in fields or production facilities. This Perspective highlights the recent development of new analytical tools that are rapid and non-destructive and provide tissue-, cell- or organelle-specific information on living plants in real time, with the potential to extend across multiple species in field applications. We evaluate the utility of engineered plant nanosensors and portable Raman spectroscopy to detect biotic and abiotic stresses, monitor plant hormonal signalling as well as characterize the soil, phytobiome and crop health in a non- or minimally invasive manner. We propose leveraging these tools to bridge the aforementioned fundamental gap with new synthesis and integration of expertise from plant biology, engineering and data science. Lastly, we assess the economic potential and discuss implementation strategies that will ensure the acceptance and successful integration of these modern tools in future farming practices in traditional as well as urban agriculture.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: Asthma is a chronic inflammatory condition, which is associated with increase in airway hyper responsiveness that leads to recurrent episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness and coughing. Asthma is a very common respiratory illness, in which some of the disease related factors may increases the vulnerability to psychiatric disorders. This study was done to determine the prevalence of psychiatric co-morbidity in patients of bronchial asthma. METHODOLOGY: It is an observational study conducted in 110 follow-up patients of bronchial asthma attending respiratory medicine OPD at tertiary care centre in central India. Psychiatric co-morbidities are assessed by pre-designed short-structured questionnaire using Mini international neuropsychiatric interview. RESULT: Among 110 patients of bronchial asthma 28% had psychiatric co-morbidity mainly depressive episode (59%). A significant association is found between lower socioeconomic status (P = 0.01), duration of of active illness (more than 1 year) (P = 0.001), and age of patient above 60 years (P = 0.001) with psychiatric co-morbidity of asthma patient. CONCLUSION: Our study shows there is increased prevalence of psychiatric co-morbidities in patients of bronchial asthma, higher than the national average. The predominant psychiatric disorder seen is depressive disorder, so treatment of asthma should be a multidisciplinary approach including medical treatment of asthma and psychiatric evaluation to prevent psychiatric co-morbidity or its early management. This will greatly reduce the morbidity, visits to hospital, expenditure on treatment and thereby having better outcomes in our patients of asthma.

There has been an increase in the consumption of junk food (JF) among school-aged children (SAC) possibly leading to obesity and diet-related diseases among them. We do not have evidence on consumption of JF in rural areas; hence, we conducted a study to assess the consumption of JF by SAC in rural, Himachal Pradesh. A total of 425 children in the age group of 12-18 years studying in 30 government schools (clusters) were included. The clusters were selected using population proportionate to size sampling methodology. We found high prevalence (36%) of consumption of JF among SAC during the last 24 h. Efforts should be taken to reduce the consumption of JF by promotion of healthy dietary habits and educating children about the ill effects of JF.
