RESUMO

A study was carried out to evaluate phytodiversity along with the metal accumulation potential of native plants growing in the vicinity of a thermal power plant (TPP). We documented 26 tree species, six shrubs, and 35 herbs. Importance value index (IVI), which measures the extent to which a species dominates in an area, was found highest for Senna siamea (95.7) followed by Tectona grandis (56.5), and Pithecellobium dulce (19.6). Soil was acidic (pH 5.4) in nature with higher concentrations of Al and Fe. The pH of ground water was found acidic while pH of nearby river was found slightly alkaline. Values of PM2.5 and PM10 were slightly higher than NAAQS standards for industrial areas. The concentration of metals was found higher in aquatic plants than in terrestrial plants. In general, herbs and shrubs showed more metal accumulation potential than trees. Our results suggest that Senna siamea could be used for revegetation purposes in FA landfills. Further, terrestrial and aquatic plants such as Ageratina adenophora and Stuckenia pectinata could be used for reclamation of Mn, Zn, Al, and Fe from contaminated soils. Hydrilla verticillata (Ni and Mn), Nelumbo nucifera, and Ipomoea aquatica (Cr) can be used for metal removal from contaminated water.


The study focuses on the assessment of phytodiversity, soil and water analysis, ambient air quality, and bioaccumulation of heavy metals in plants growing in and around a thermal power plant. The study assumes significance as more than 65% of India's electricity generation is still by coal-fired power plants, having major implications for air, soil, and water pollution. By selecting native plant species adapted to the region, we can enhance biodiversity, restore habitats, and contribute to the overall ecological health of the area surrounding the power plant.

Background: The potential molluscicidal extracts, obtained from indigenous plants Cannabis sativa, Acacia nilotica, and Tinospora cordifolia, were tested for toxicity against freshwater pulmonate snail Lymnaea acuminata, an intermediate host of Fasciola hepatica. The organic extracts had a significant effect on young snails. Materials and Methods: All organic extracts and column-purified fractions gave median lethal concentrations (19-100.05 mg/L; 24 h) that fell well within the threshold level of 100 mg/L, set for a potential molluscicide by the World Health Organization. Results: The toxicity of T. cordifolia stem acetone extract (96 h LC50: 16.08 mg/L) was more pronounced compared with C. sativa leaf ethanol extract (96 h LC50: 16.32 mg/L) and A. nilotica leaf ethanol extract (96 h LC50: 24.78 mg/L). ß-caryophyllene, gallic acid, and berberine were characterized and identified as active molluscicidal components. Co-migration of ß-caryophyllene (retardation factor [Rf] 0.95), gallic acid (Rf 0.30), and berberine (Rf 0.23) with column-purified parts of Cannabis sativa, Acacia nilotica, and Tinospora cordifolia on thin-layer chromatography demonstrates same Rf value, that is, 0.95, 0.30, and 0.23, respectively. Conclusion: This study indicates that these extracts thus represent potential plant-derived molluscicides that are worthy of further investigations.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to assess the hazardous impact of nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiO NPs) on gills and liver of Heteropneustes fossilis. METHODS: Fishes were treated with four concentrations of NiO NPs for a period of 14 days. Nickel accumulation, lipid peroxidation, antioxidant enzymes activities (superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione s transferase & glutathione reductase), liver enzymes activities (aspartate amino transferase, alanine transaminase, & alkaline phosphatase), Na+/K+ ATPase activity, FTIR, metallothionein content, ethoxyresorufin-o-deethylase activity, immunohistochemistry, histology and scanning electron microscopy were analyzed in both gills and liver tissues. RESULTS: Results revealed increased accumulation of nickel in both the tissues of exposed fishes. Lipid peroxidation and activities of different antioxidant enzymes increased (except superoxide dismutase) in both the tissues after exposure. Fluctuations in liver enzymes activities and variation in the activity of Na+/K+ ATPase were also observed. FTIR data revealed shift in peaks position in both the tissues. Level of metallothionein and its expression as well as activity of ethoxyresorufin-o-deethylase and expression of CYP1A also increased in both the target tissues of treated fishes. Furthermore, histological investigation and scanning electron microscopy showed structural damages in gills as well as liver tissues of exposed fishes. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that NiO NPs cause deteriorating effects on the gill and liver tissues of fish, therefore effluents containing these nanoparticles should be treated before their release into water bodies.

PURPOSE: Coracoclavicular joint (CCJ) is a rare anomalous joint occasionally found between the coracoid process of scapula and the conoid tubercle of clavicle. The articulation has been extensively studied by means of anatomical, osteological and radiological investigations. Most cases are discovered incidentally, with the symptomatic variety remaining an exceptional rarity. Our aim was to review all reported symptomatic CCJ to increase the level of evidence and formulate a treatment algorithm to aid clinicians in management planning. METHODS: A thorough literature search was performed, and data from 17 (n = 17) symptomatic cases of CCJ were analysed. RESULTS: CCJ is a rare finding and mostly an incidental discovery, which is rarely symptomatic. However, when symptomatic, the most common symptom is shoulder pain. The mean age at presentation is 42 years, with a male:female ratio of 1.4:1. Brachial plexus involvement was the most common pathophysiological explanation provided. First-line treatment was conservative, with a very low success rate of 5.9%. Surgical intervention in the form of excision of anomalous joint by osteotomy had success rate of 100%. CONCLUSIONS: Symptomatic CCJ is rare, and its rarity leads to lack of awareness in the general orthopaedic community. When symptomatic, CCJ may lead to delayed diagnosis or inappropriate management due to lack of evidence and poor description in most orthopaedic textbooks. Despite its low success rate, conservative treatment is advocated before embarking upon surgical intervention.

UNLABELLED: Since membranous proteins play a key role in drug targeting therefore transmembrane proteins prediction is active and challenging area of biological sciences. Location based prediction of transmembrane proteins are significant for functional annotation of protein sequences. Hidden markov model based method was widely applied for transmembrane topology prediction. Here we have presented a revised and a better understanding model than an existing one for transmembrane protein prediction. Scripting on MATLAB was built and compiled for parameter estimation of model and applied this model on amino acid sequence to know the transmembrane and its adjacent locations. Estimated model of transmembrane topology was based on TMHMM model architecture. Only 7 super states are defined in the given dataset, which were converted to 96 states on the basis of their length in sequence. Accuracy of the prediction of model was observed about 74 %, is a good enough in the area of transmembrane topology prediction. Therefore we have concluded the hidden markov model plays crucial role in transmembrane helices prediction on MATLAB platform and it could also be useful for drug discovery strategy.
