Objective: Comprehensive investigations of correlations between subnational socioeconomic factors and trends in mortality and lifestyle are important for addressing public health problems. Methods: Forty-seven prefectures in Japan were divided into quartiles based on the proportion of public assistance recipients (PPAR). Age-standardized mortality from all causes, cancer, heart disease, and stroke in each prefecture were averaged for these quartiles in 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Survey were obtained for the following periods: 1999-2001, 2003-2005, 2007-2009, 2012, and 2016. Body mass index (BMI), intake of total energy, vegetable and salt, step count, and prevalence of current smoking and drinking for individuals aged 40-69 years age range were standardized for each prefecture and averaged by quartile. A two-way analysis of variance was used to assess differences in mortality and lifestyle across different years or periods, and quartiles. Results: Mortality rates decreased, with the first (lowest) quartile showing the lowest rates, across all causes, cancer and heart diseases in both sexes. BMI exhibited an increase in men, whereas, BMI in women and other lifestyle factors in both sexes, excluding smoking and drinking in women, exhibited a decrease. BMI, vegetable and salt intake, total energy intake in men, and smoking in women varied across quartiles. Lower quartiles exhibited lower BMI and smoking prevalence but higher energy, vegetables, and salt intake. Conclusions: PPAR exhibited favorable trends and significant differences in mortality related to all causes, cancer and heart disease across both sexes, along with BMI among women.

While interdisciplinary scholars and activists urge White allies to engage in racial justice work led by the voices of Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC), to date, most research on racial allyship has centered exclusively on the perspective of White allies themselves. Thus, the purpose of this study was to create a framework of racial allyship from the perspective of BIPOC. Utilizing constructivist grounded theory (Charmaz, 2014), focus groups were conducted to understand how BIPOC describe the knowledge, skills, and actions of White allies. Participants across eight focus groups described allyship as an ongoing interpersonal process that included a lifelong commitment to (a) building trust, (b) engaging in antiracist action, (c) critical awareness, (d) sociopolitical knowledge, (e) accountability, and (f) communicating and disseminating information. The findings of this study point to several avenues through which White counseling psychologists can incorporate racial allyship in their research, training, clinical, and advocacy work that align with our field's emphasis on social justice, multiculturalism, and prevention. In Japan, trends in mortality and lifestyle have not been fully investigated according to subnational socioeconomic factors. Forty-seven prefectures (subnational units) were divided into quartiles by annual per capita prefectural income. Age-standardized mortality from all causes, cancer, heart disease, and stroke was averaged by quartile in 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Survey were obtained for periods 1 (1995-1997), 2 (1999-2001), 3 (2003-2005), 4 (2007-2009), 5 (2012), and 6 (2016). Body mass index (BMI), the intake of vegetables and salt, the number of steps, and the prevalence of current smoking and drinking for the 40-69-year age range were standardized by 10-year age groups in the 2010 Japanese population and were averaged by quartile. Differences in mortality and lifestyle by year and period, and quartile were tested using a two-way analysis of variance. Mortality decreased in both sexes and mortality in men from all causes, cancer, and stroke differed by quartile, with mortality highest in the first (lowest) quartile. BMI in men and smoking prevalence in women increased, whereas remaining lifestyle factors except for the prevalence of drinking decreased in women. BMI and the number of steps in both sexes and current smoking prevalence in women differed by quartile, with lower quartiles showing a higher BMI and fewer step counts. In conclusion, favorable trends and significant differences in mortality from all causes, cancer, and stroke in men and BMI in women were observed by per capita prefectural income level.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to develop a computational environment for the accurate simulation of human cancer cell irradiation using Geant4-DNA. New cell geometrical models were developed and irradiated by alpha particle beams to induce DNA damage. The proposed approach may help further investigation of the benefits of external alpha irradiation therapy. METHODS: The Geant4-DNA Monte Carlo (MC) toolkit allows the simulation of cancer cell geometries that can be combined with accurate modelling of physical, physicochemical and chemical stages of liquid water irradiation, including radiolytic processes. Geant4-DNA is used to calculate direct and non-direct DNA damage yields, such as single and double strand breaks, produced by the deposition of energy or by the interaction of DNA with free radicals. RESULTS: In this study, the "molecularDNA" example application of Geant4-DNA was used to quantify early DNA damage in human cancer cells upon irradiation with alpha particle beams, as a function of linear energy transfer (LET). The MC simulation results are compared to experimental data, as well as previously published simulation data. The simulation results agree well with the experimental data on DSB yields in the lower LET range, while the experimental data on DSB yields are lower than the results obtained with the "molecularDNA" example in the higher LET range. CONCLUSION: This study explored and demonstrated the possibilities of the Geant4-DNA toolkit together with the "molecularDNA" example to simulate the helium beam irradiation of cancer cell lines, to quantify the early DNA damage, or even the following DNA damage response.

In the last 3 years, almost all medical resources have been reserved for the screening and treatment of patients with coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Due to a shortage of medical staff and equipment, diagnosing sleep disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), has become more difficult than ever. In addition to being diagnosed using polysomnography at a hospital, people seem to pay more attention to alternative at-home OSA detection solutions. This study aims to review state-of-the-art assessment techniques for out-of-center detection of the main characteristics of OSA, such as sleep, cardiovascular function, oxygen balance and consumption, sleep position, breathing effort, respiratory function, and audio, as well as recent progress in the implementation of data acquisition and processing and machine learning techniques that support early detection of severe OSA levels.

Crab species are economically important crustaceans with high demand in markets. Development of the culture system resulted in an increase in disease outbreaks. Disquisition and application of methods that can prevent and control diseases during the crab culture period are crucially essential. The application of prebiotics and probiotics to replace the overuse of antibiotics has practical significance in sustainability of the crab farming. Previously, both prebiotics and probiotics have shown to confer benefits in growth promotion, immunostimulation, and disease control in crab culture. These components can directly stimulate humoral immunity by increasing activities of lysozyme, phagocytosis, respiratory burst, and phenoloxidase. They also activate the cell-mediated immunity by binding to pattern recognition receptors expressed on immune cells and modulating cell signal transduction pathways. Furthermore, the mechanism of action and effectiveness in use of prebiotics and probiotics are summarized in this study, indicating the potential application of prebiotics and probiotics as feed additives in crab farming.

The energy sector in Vietnam has developed rapidly as the country is transitioning to renewable energy. Moreover, the Vietnamese government also motivates the engagement of private investors in the energy sector to enhance the competitiveness of the energy market. Therefore, this paper investigates how innovation investments and ownership concentration affect the financial sustainability of energy companies in Vietnam. We employ the Fixed Effect Model and Generalized Method of Moments estimations to analyze the sample, including 600 firm-year observations of 103 energy companies from January 2007 to December 2020. The empirical findings show that innovations and block-holders support firms to grow sustainably. The positive relationship between innovation investments and financial sustainability is robust even when we employ alternative proxies of innovation investments. Our study indicates that block-ownership affects sustainable developments of smaller energy firms, while innovation investments significantly improve the sustainability of larger energy firms. Finally, our study reports that the Covid-19 pandemic adversely affects the financial sustainability of energy firms. Our findings align with agency theory, resource-based theory, and prior literature. Our findings recommend that energy firms motivate innovation investments such as training and R&D activities to grow sustainably. In addition, the Vietnamese government should encourage small energy firms to attract blockholders to improve financial sustainability.

Predicting the export price of shrimp is important for Vietnam's fisheries. It not only promotes product quality but also helps policy makers determine strategies to develop the national shrimp industry. Competition in global markets is considered to be an important factor, one that significantly influences price. In this study, we predicted trends in the export price of Vietnamese shrimp based on competitive information from six leading exporters (China, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Ecuador, and Chile) who, alongside Vietnam, also export shrimp to the US. The prediction was based on a dataset collected from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and the World Trade Organization (WTO) (May-1995 to May-2019) that included price, required farming certificates, and disease outbreak data. A super learner technique, which combined 10 single algorithms, was used to make predictions in selected base periods (3, 6, 9, and 12 months). It was found that the super learner obtained results in all base periods that were more accurate and stable than any candidate algorithms. The impacts of variables in the predictive model were interpreted by a SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis to determine their influence on the price of Vietnamese exports. The price of Indian, Thai, and Chinese exports highlighted the advantages of being a World Trade Organization member and the disadvantages of the prevalence of shrimp disease in Vietnam, which has had a significant impact on the Vietnamese shrimp export price.

Interpersonal mindfulness is a construct that significantly contributes to social interaction. To date, no validated measure assessing interpersonal mindfulness has been developed in Iran. Therefore, the aim of this study was to translate and validate the Interpersonal Mindfulness Scale (IMS) among Iranian undergraduate students. Participants in the study (370 undergraduate students; 220 females) from the Azad University completed the translated IMS, the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire, and the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems Scale. The translated measure demonstrated acceptable face validity. All items had acceptable content validity and were deemed essential to the scale. The results of a Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) confirmed a scale with four subscales (presence, awareness of self and others, non-judgmental acceptance, and non-reactivity), with acceptable internal consistency. The findings support the psychometric properties of the Persian translated Interpersonal Mindfulness Scale, which could be used to measure interpersonal mindfulness among undergraduate students in Iran.

Understanding the determinants of the shadow economy plays a vital role in formulating policies for economic growth and development, particularly for the Southeast Asian countries-a new economic force for a global economy. The key drivers of a shadow economy, such as institutional quality, taxation, government expenditure, are widely examined. However, the effect of national intellectual capital, which affects macroeconomic indicators, on the shadow economy has largely been ignored in the existing literature. Our paper examines this critical link and its causality relationship for eight Southeast Asian countries from 2000 to 2017. This paper uses the dynamic ordinary least squares (DOLS) and fully modified ordinary least squares (FMOLS), which allow cross-sectional dependence and slope homogeneity in panel data analysis. Empirical findings from this paper indicate that national intellectual capital impacts negatively and significantly the shadow economy size. This finding implies that enhancing national intellectual capital reduces the shadow economy size. These two forces lead to enhanced economic growth. Our Granger causality tests confirm a bi-directional relationship between national intellectual capital and the shadow economy. As a result, policies targeted to reduce the shadow economy size can now include the accumulation of national intellectual capital, particularly for Southeast Asian Countries.

Artificial neural network (ANN) has been commonly used to deal with many problems. However, since this algorithm applies backpropagation algorithms based on gradient descent (GD) technique to look for the best solution, the network may face major risks of being entrapped in local minima. To overcome those drawbacks of ANN, in this work, we propose a novel ANN working parallel with metaheuristic algorithms (MAs) to train the network. The core idea is that first, (1) GD is applied to increase the convergence speed. (2) If the network is stuck in local minima, the capacity of the global search technique of MAs is employed. (3) After escaping from local minima, the GD technique is applied again. This process is applied until the target is achieved. Additionally, to increase the efficiency of the global search capacity, a hybrid of particle swarm optimization and genetic algorithm (PSOGA) is employed. The effectiveness of ANNPSOGA is assessed using both numerical models and measurement. The results demonstrate that ANNPSOGA provides higher accuracy than traditional ANN, PSO, and other hybrid ANNs (even a higher level of noise is employed) and also considerably decreases calculational cost compared with PSO.

RESUMO

The low-cost and easy-to-use nature of rapidly developed PM2.5 sensors provide an opportunity to bring breakthroughs in PM2.5 research to resource-limited countries in Southeast Asia (SEA). This review provides an evaluation of the currently available literature and identifies research priorities in applying low-cost sensors (LCS) in PM2.5 environmental and health research in SEA. The research priority is an outcome of a series of participatory workshops under the umbrella of the International Global Atmospheric Chemistry Project-Monsoon Asia and Oceania Networking Group (IGAC-MANGO). A literature review and research prioritization are conducted with a transdisciplinary perspective of providing useful scientific evidence in assisting authorities in formulating targeted strategies to reduce severe PM2.5 pollution and health risks in this region. The PM2.5 research gaps that could be filled by LCS application are identified in five categories: source evaluation, especially for the distinctive sources in the SEA countries; hot spot investigation; peak exposure assessment; exposure-health evaluation on acute health impacts; and short-term standards. The affordability of LCS, methodology transferability, international collaboration, and stakeholder engagement are keys to success in such transdisciplinary PM2.5 research. Unique contributions to the international science community and challenges with LCS application in PM2.5 research in SEA are also discussed.

This paper demonstrates the impact of the pre-chemical stage, especially the dissociation scheme and the associated probabilities, on water radiolysis simulation using the Geant4-DNA Monte Carlo track structure simulation toolkit. The models and parameters provided by TRACs have been collected and implemented into Geant4-DNA. In order to evaluate their influence on water radiolysis simulation, the radiochemical yields (G-values) are evaluated as a function of time and LET using the "chem6" Geant4-DNA example, and they are compared with published experimental and calculated data. The new pre-chemical models lead to a better agreement with literature data than the default pre-chemical models of Geant4-DNA, especially for OH radicals and H2O2. The revised chemistry constructor "G4EmDNAChemistry_option3" is available in Geant4-DNA version 10.7.

BACKGROUND: The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) revised their Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) severity classification criteria in 2017 to include an absolute serum creatinine (SCr) value above a threshold (≥1.5 mg/dL) rather than a relative increase from baseline (≥1.5 times the premorbid level). To date, how to best define kidney injury as a CDI disease severity marker has not been validated to assess severe outcomes associated with CDI. METHODS: This multicenter cohort study included adult hospitalized patients with CDI. Patients were assessed for the presence of acute kidney injury (AKI), chronic kidney disease (CKD), and CDI severity using the 2010 and 2017 IDSA/SHEA CDI guidelines. Primary outcome was all-cause inpatient mortality. RESULTS: The final study cohort consisted of 770 CDI episodes from 705 unique patients aged 65 ±â€…17 years (female, 54%; CKD, 36.5%; AKI, 29.6%). Eighty-two episodes (10.6%) showed discordant severity classification results due to the inclusion of more patients with preexisting CKD in the severe disease category using an absolute SCr threshold criterion. The absolute SCr criterion better correlated with all-cause mortality (odds ratio [OR], 4.04; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.76-9.28; P = .001) than the relative increase in SCr (OR, 1.34; 95% CI, 0.62-2.89; P = .46). This corresponded to an increased likelihood of the 2017 CDI severity classification criteria to predict mortality (OR, 5.33; 95% CI, 1.81-15.72; P = .002) compared with the 2010 criteria (OR, 2.71; 95% CI, 1.16-6.32; P = .02). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings support the 2017 IDSA/SHEA CDI severity classification criteria of a single pretreatment SCr in future CDI guideline updates.

PURPOSE: The simulation of individual particle tracks and the chemical stage following water radiolysis in biological tissue is an effective means of improving our knowledge of the physico-chemical contribution to the biological effect of ionizing radiation. However, the step-by-step simulation of the reaction kinetics of radiolytic species is the most time-consuming task in Monte Carlo track-structure simulations, with long simulation times that are an impediment to research. In this work, we present the implementation of the independent reaction times (IRT) method in Geant4-DNA Monte Carlo toolkit to improve the computational efficiency of calculating G-values, defined as the number of chemical species created or lost per 100 eV of deposited energy. METHODS: The computational efficiency of IRT, as implemented, is compared to that from available Geant4-DNA step-by-step simulations for electrons, protons and alpha particles covering a wide range of linear energy transfer (LET). The accuracy of both methods is verified using published measured data from fast electron irradiations for • OH and e aq - for time-dependent G-values. For IRT, simulations in the presence of scavengers irradiated by cobalt-60 γ-ray and 2 MeV protons are compared with measured data for different scavenging capacities. In addition, a qualitative assessment comparing measured LET-dependent G-values with Geant4-DNA calculations in pure liquid water is presented. RESULTS: The IRT improved the computational efficiency by three orders of magnitude relative to the step-by-step method while differences in G-values by 3.9% at 1 µs were found. At 7 ps, • OH and e aq - yields calculated with IRT differed from recent published measured data by 5% ± 4% and 2% ± 4%, respectively. At 1 µs, differences were 9% ± 5% and 6% ± 7% for • OH and e aq - , respectively. Uncertainties are one standard deviation. Finally, G-values at different scavenging capacities and LET-dependent G-values reproduced the behavior of measurements for all radiation qualities. CONCLUSION: The comprehensive validation of the Geant4-DNA capabilities to accurately simulate the chemistry following water radiolysis is an ongoing work. The implementation presented in this work is a necessary step to facilitate performing such a task.

Very little information on the occurrence and risk assessment of antibiotics in the aquatic environment is reported for Vietnam, where antibiotics are assumed to be omnipresent in urban canals and lakes at high concentrations due to the easy accessibility of antibiotics without doctor prescription. This study provides comprehensive analysis of the occurrence of 23 antibiotics in urban canals (To Lich and Kim Nguu) and lakes (West Lake, Hoan Kiem, and Yen So) in Hanoi, Vietnam. Of these 23 antibiotics, 18 were detected in urban canals at above 67.9% detection frequency (DF). The concentrations of detected antibiotics were in the range from below quantification limit (MQL) to almost 50,000 ng/L, depending on the compound and sampling site. In urban canals, median concentration of amoxicillin, erythromycin, and sulfamethoxazole was >1000 ng/L while other antibiotics such as ampicillin, chloramphenicol, clindamycin, sulfamethazine, tetracycline, tylosin and vancomycin were detected at median concentrations of <100 ng/L. Similarly, 16 target antibiotics were also detected in urban lakes. Macrolides (azithromycin, clarithromycin, and erythromycin-H2O), fluoroquinolones (enrofloxacin and ofloxacin), lincosamides (clindamycin and lincomycin), and trimethoprim were ubiquitously detected in urban lakes (DF = 100%). In this study, potential risks of antibiotics in the investigated urban canals and lakes were assessed based on the predicted no-effect concentration (PNEC) from the existing literature for antibiotic resistance selection (PNECARM) and ecological toxicity to aquatic organisms (PNECEcotox). Ampicillin, amoxicillin, azithromycin, ciprofloxacin, clarithromycin, enrofloxacin, erythromycin, ofloxacin, tetracycline, and trimethoprim were found in the investigated urban canals at concentrations exceeding their PNECARM and PNECEcotox. Similarly, most of the target antibiotics (i.e. amoxicillin, ciprofloxacin, clarithromycin, clindamycin, enrofloxacin, erythromycin, lincomycin, ofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, tetracycline, trimethoprim and tylosin) were detected in the investigated urban lakes at concentrations close to or exceeding PNECEcotox for aquatic organisms. Further investigations on the occurrence and fate of antibiotic residues and antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in surface waters are recommended.

BACKGROUND: The health burden associated with temperature is expected to increase due to a warming climate. Populations living in cities are likely to be particularly at risk, but the role of urban characteristics in modifying the direct effects of temperature on health is still unclear. In this contribution, we used a multi-country dataset to study effect modification of temperature-mortality relationships by a range of city-specific indicators. METHODS: We collected ambient temperature and mortality daily time-series data for 340 cities in 22 countries, in periods between 1985 and 2014. Standardized measures of demographic, socio-economic, infrastructural and environmental indicators were derived from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Regional and Metropolitan Database. We used distributed lag non-linear and multivariate meta-regression models to estimate fractions of mortality attributable to heat and cold (AF%) in each city, and to evaluate the effect modification of each indicator across cities. RESULTS: Heat- and cold-related deaths amounted to 0.54% (95% confidence interval: 0.49 to 0.58%) and 6.05% (5.59 to 6.36%) of total deaths, respectively. Several city indicators modify the effect of heat, with a higher mortality impact associated with increases in population density, fine particles (PM2.5), gross domestic product (GDP) and Gini index (a measure of income inequality), whereas higher levels of green spaces were linked with a decreased effect of heat. CONCLUSIONS: This represents the largest study to date assessing the effect modification of temperature-mortality relationships. RESUMO

Conversion of carbon dioxide into hydrocarbons using solar energy is an attractive strategy for storing such a renewable source of energy into the form of chemical energy (a fuel). This can be achieved in a system coupling a photovoltaic (PV) cell to an electrochemical cell (EC) for CO2 reduction. To be beneficial and applicable, such a system should use low-cost and easily processable photovoltaic cells and display minimal energy losses associated with the catalysts at the anode and cathode and with the electrolyzer device. In this work, we have considered all of these parameters altogether to set up a reference PV-EC system for CO2 reduction to hydrocarbons. By using the same original and efficient Cu-based catalysts at both electrodes of the electrolyzer, and by minimizing all possible energy losses associated with the electrolyzer device, we have achieved CO2 reduction to ethylene and ethane with a 21% energy efficiency. Coupled with a state-of-the-art, low-cost perovskite photovoltaic minimodule, this system reaches a 2.3% solar-to-hydrocarbon efficiency, setting a benchmark for an inexpensive all-earth-abundant PV-EC system.

Black carbon (BC) is a significant component of atmospheric particulate matter, especially in areas affected by combustion emissions. Despite the fact that air pollution is a great concern in Vietnam, there are no studies on the level of BC in the outdoor and indoor environment. In this exploratory study, an assessment of urban BC concentrations was conducted through monitoring of both outdoor and indoor BC concentrations in three households and one working office at different locations across Hanoi. PM2.5 and meteorology data were also obtained for this monitoring period to evaluate the association between them and the outdoor BC concentration. Overall, the mean indoor and mean outdoor BC concentrations by 30 second-logs for the monitoring period were 4.42 µg/m3 and 4.89 µg/m3, respectively. Time-series analysis of paired indoor and outdoor BC concentrations suggested that indoor BC level was usually influenced by outdoor BC level (r = 0.78, p < 0.001). In this study, we observed a significant positive association between outdoor BC and PM2.5 (r = 0.39, p < 0.001) while outdoor BC negatively correlated with wind speed (r = -0.34, p < 0.001). The level of outdoor BC in Hanoi measured in this study is relatively high and should be confirmed by further studies.

Under the Japanese biosafety regulatory framework for transgenic plants, data for assessing a transgenic plant's impact on biodiversity must be submitted in order to obtain approval for a confined field trial. We recently reported the development of four novel transgenic Eucalyptus camaldulensis clones expressing the bacterial choline oxidase A (codA) gene, i.e., codAH-1, codAH-2, codAN-1, and codAN-2, and evaluated their abiotic tolerance by semiconfined screen house trial cultivation. Here we evaluated the impacts of the transgenic E. camaldulensis clones on productivities of harmful substances from those clones to affect soil microorganisms and/or other plants in the environment. A comparison of the assessment data between the transgenic trees and non-transgenic comparators showed no significant difference in potential impacts on biodiversity. The results contribute to sound-science evidence ensuring substantial equivalence between transgenic and non-transgenic E. camaldulensis.
