RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The recent discovery of emerging relapsing fever group Borrelia (RFGB) species, such as Borrelia miyamotoi, poses a growing threat to public health. However, the global distribution and associated risk burden of these species remain uncertain. We aimed to map the diversity, distribution, and potential infection risk of RFGB. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, GenBank, CNKI, and eLibrary from Jan 1, 1874, to Dec 31, 2022, for published articles without language restriction to extract distribution data for RFGB detection in vectors, animals, and humans, and clinical information about human patients. Only articles documenting RFGB infection events were included in this study, and data for RFGB detection in vectors, animals, or humans were composed into a dataset. We used three machine learning algorithms (boosted regression trees, random forest, and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator logistic regression) to assess the environmental, ecoclimatic, biological, and socioeconomic factors associated with the occurrence of four major RFGB species: Borrelia miyamotoi, Borrelia lonestari, Borrelia crocidurae, and Borrelia hermsii; and mapped their worldwide risk level. FINDINGS: We retrieved 13 959 unique studies, among which 697 met the selection criteria and were used for data extraction. 29 RFGB species have been recorded worldwide, of which 27 have been identified from 63 tick species, 12 from 61 wild animals, and ten from domestic animals. 16 RFGB species caused human infection, with a cumulative count of 26 583 cases reported from Jan 1, 1874, to Dec 31, 2022. Borrelia recurrentis (17 084 cases) and Borrelia persica (2045 cases) accounted for the highest proportion of human infection. B miyamotoi showed the widest distribution among all RFGB, with a predicted environmentally suitable area of 6·92 million km2, followed by B lonestari (1·69 million km2), B crocidurae (1·67 million km2), and B hermsii (1·48 million km2). The habitat suitability index of vector ticks and climatic factors, such as the annual mean temperature, have the most significant effect among all predictive models for the geographical distribution of the four major RFGB species. INTERPRETATION: The predicted high-risk regions are considerably larger than in previous reports. Identification, surveillance, and diagnosis of RFGB infections should be prioritised in high-risk areas, especially within low-income regions. FUNDING: National Key Research and Development Program of China.

RESUMO

To reveal differences in arsenic (As) accumulation among indica rice cultivars and assess the human health risks arising from inorganic arsenic (iAs) intake via rice consumption, a total of 320 field indica rice samples and corresponding soil samples were collected from Fujian Province in China. The results showed that available soil As (0.03 to 3.83 mg/kg) showed a statistically significant positive correlation with total soil As (0.10 to 19.45 mg/kg). The inorganic As content in brown rice was between 0.001 and 0.316 mg/kg. Among the cultivars, ten brown rice samples (3.13%) exceeded the maximum contaminant level (MCL) of iAs in food of 0.2 mg/kg in China. The estimated daily intake (EDI) and calculated individual incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) ranged from 0.337 µg/day to 106.60 µg/day and from 8.18 × 10-6 to 2.59 × 10-3, respectively. Surprisingly, the average EDI and the EDIs of 258 (80.63%) brown rice samples were higher than the maximum daily intake (MDI) of 10 µg/day in drinking water as set by the National Research Council. The mean ILCR associated with iAs was 54.3 per 100,000, which exceeds the acceptable upper limit (AUL) of 10 per 100,000 set by the USEPA. Notably, the cultivars Y-Liang-You 1 and Shi-Ji 137 exhibited significantly higher mean ILCRs compared to the AUL and other cultivars, indicating that they pose more serious cancer risks to the local population. Finally, this study demonstrated that the cultivars Yi-Xiang 2292 and Quan-Zhen 10 were the optimal cultivars to mitigate risks associated with iAs to human health from rice consumption.

RESUMO

Background: Drug treatment was recommended for stage 1 hypertensive patients (blood pressure of 130-139 / 80-89 millimetres of mercury (mmHg)) with high cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in the 2017 Hypertension Clinical Practice Guidelines, 2018 Chinese guidelines and 2021 World Health Organization guidelines, but not in other guidelines. However, evidence on the cost-effectiveness of drug treatment among young and middle-aged patients remains scarce. This study aimed to compare the cost-effectiveness of drug treatment vs. non-drug treatment for stage 1 hypertensive patients aged <60 years with high CVD risk. Methods: A microsimulation model projected quality-adjusted life years (QALYs), health care costs, and incremental cost-effectiveness ratios for drug treatment from a societal perspective. Transition probabilities were estimated from the Kailuan study with a sample size of 34 093 patients aged <60 years with high CVD risk. Costs and health utilities were obtained from the Kailuan study, national statistics reports and published literature. Results: Over a 15-year time horizon, the model predicted that drug treatment generated QALY of 9.36 and was associated with expected costs of 3735 US dollars ($) compared with 9.07 and $3923 produced by non-drug treatment among stage 1 hypertensive patients, resulting in a cost-saving for drug treatment. At a willingness-to-pay threshold of $10439/QALY (one gross domestic product (GDP) per capita in 2020), drug treatment had a 99.99% probability of being cost-effective for 10 000 samples of probabilistic sensitivity analysis. Sensitivity analyses by different values of transition probability, cost, utility and discount rate did not appreciably change the results. Shortening the time horizon to the average follow-up period of eight years resulted in ICER of $189/QALY for drug treatment (<1 × GDP/QALY). Conclusions: Our results suggested that drug treatment was a dominant strategy for stage 1 hypertensive patients aged <60 years with high CVD risk in China, which may provide evidence for policymakers and clinicians when weighing the pros and cons of drug treatment for young and middle-aged stage 1 hypertensive patients.

RESUMO

The carbon-reducing effects of artificial intelligence (AI) will be a critical means of achieving carbon peak and carbon neutrality in China. However, in order to efficiently harness the power of AI, the relationship between AI and carbon reduction needs to be fully understood. In this study, we systematically investigated the impacts and mechanisms of action of AI on CO2 emissions by constructing econometric models using dynamic panel data from 30 provinces in mainland China from 2006 to 2019. The empirical results show that AI significantly reduces CO2 emissions. Further mediation effect tests found that in the western region, there are mediation effects of the quantity and quality of industrial structure advancedization and industrial structure ecology, while the mediation effect of industrial structure rationalization is not significant. In the eastern and central regions, the mediating effect of the quantity of industrial structure advanced is not significant, while the mediating effect of the quality of industrial structure advanced, industrial structure rationalization, and industrial structure ecology all exist. Our work provides evidence to support that AI reduces CO2 emissions in various regions of China. This can help regions formulate appropriate policies to promote the synergistic development of AI and the "dual-carbon" goal.

RESUMO

Disinformation refers to false rumors deliberately fabricated for certain political or economic conspiracies. So far, how to prevent online disinformation propagation is still a severe challenge. Refutation, media censorship, and social bot detection are three popular approaches to stopping disinformation, which aim to clarify facts, intercept the spread of existing disinformation, and quarantine the source of disinformation, respectively. In this paper, we study the collaboration of the above three countermeasures in defending disinformation. Specifically, considering an online social network, we study the most cost-effective dynamic budget allocation (DBA) strategy for the three methods to minimize the proportion of disinformation-supportive accounts on the network with the lowest expenditure. For convenience, we refer to the search for the optimal DBA strategy as the DBA problem. Our contributions are as follows. First, we propose a disinformation propagation model to characterize the effects of different DBA strategies on curbing disinformation. On this basis, we establish a trade-off model for DBA strategies and reduce the DBA problem to an optimal control model. Second, we derive an optimality system for the optimal control model and develop a heuristic numerical algorithm called the DBA algorithm to solve the optimality system. With the DBA algorithm, we can find possible optimal DBA strategies. Third, through numerical experiments, we estimate key model parameters, examine the obtained DBA strategy, and verify the effectiveness of the DBA algorithm. Results show that the DBA algorithm is effective.

RESUMO

Tibetan medicine is an essential part of Chinese medicine and has unique theoretical experience and therapeutic advantages. According to the development principle of inheriting the essence, sticking to the truth, and keeping innovative, the supervision department should give clear and reasonable guidance considering the characteristics of Tibetan medicine, establish a standard system for quality control, clinical verification and evaluation, and accelerate the research and commercialization of new drugs. In view of the needs of drug supply-side reform and the current situation of Tibetan medicine and new pharmaceutical research, we ponder and provide suggestions on the confusion faced by the current supervision of Tibetan drug registration, hoping to contribute to the supervision strategy of Tibetan drug registration and the high-quality development of Tibetan medicine industry.

RESUMO

RNA polymerase II (Pol II) surveils the genome, pausing as it encounters DNA lesions and base modifications and initiating signals for DNA repair among other important regulatory events. Recent work suggests that Pol II pauses at 5-carboxycytosine (5caC), an epigenetic modification of cytosine, because of a specific hydrogen bond between the carboxyl group of 5caC and a specific residue in fork loop 3 of Pol II. This hydrogen bond compromises productive NTP binding and slows down elongation. Apart from this specific interaction, the carboxyl group of 5caC can potentially interact with numerous charged residues in the cleft of Pol II. However, it is not clear how other interactions between Pol II and 5caC contribute to pausing. In this study, we use Markov state models (a type of kinetic network models) built from extensive molecular dynamics simulations to comprehensively study the impact of 5caC on Pol II translocation. We describe two translocation intermediates with specific interactions that prevent the template base from loading into the Pol II active site. In addition to the previously observed state with 5caC constrained by fork loop 3, we discovered a new intermediate state with a hydrogen bond between 5caC and fork loop 2. Surprisingly, we find that 5caC may curb translocation by suppressing kinking of the helix bordering the active site (the bridge helix) because its high flexibility is critical to translocation. Our work provides new insights into how epigenetic modifications of genomic DNA can modulate Pol II translocation, inducing pauses in transcription.

RESUMO

The novel coronavirus, named SARS-Cov-2, has raged in mainland China for more than three months, and it causes a huge threat to people's health and economic development. In order to curb the SARS-Cov-2 prevalence, the Chinese government enacted a series of containment strategies including household quarantine, traffic restriction, city lockdowns etc. Indeed, the pandemic has been effectively mitigated, but the global transmission is not still optimistic. Evaluating such control measures in detail plays an important role in limiting SARS-Cov-2 spread for public health decision and policymakers. In this paper, based on the cumulative numbers of confirmed cases and deaths of SARS-Cov-2 infection, from January 31st to March 31st, announced by the National Health Commission of the People's Republic of China, we established a mean-field model, considering the substantial contact change under some restrictive measures, to study the dynamics of SARS-Cov-2 infection in mainland China. By the Metropolis-Hastings (M-H) algorithm of Markov Chain Monte Carlo numerical method, our model provided a good fitting to the overall trends of SARS-Cov-2 infections and discovers the transmission heterogeneities by some extreme containment strategies to some extent. The basic reproduction number was approximated to be 2.05 (95% CI [1.35,2.87]); the hospitalized cases arrived at the peak of 29766 (95% CI [29743,29868]) on February 7th (95% CI [Feb.6th, Feb.8th]). Importantly, we identified that the highest risk group of SARS-Cov-2 was the family of four, which has the biggest probability of degree distributions at such node, suggesting that contact patterns play an important role in curtailing the disease spread.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the coronary plaque characteristics of coronary arteries using computed tomography angiography (CTA) in order to assess the risk of coronary artery disease and the relevance of high sensitivity C reactive protein (hs-CRP) in patients with Diabetes Mellitus (DM). METHODS: The clinical data of 400 DM patients and 400 non-DM patients from January 2017 to December 2019 were collected, including the results of coronaryCTA. The plasma hs-CRP level of the two groups were divided into three groups: CRP ≤ 1, 1 < CRP ≤ 2, CRP > 2. The correlation of the degree of stenosis, the number of plaques, the nature of plaques and hs-CRP value between the two groups was evaluated. RESULTS: Compared with non-DM patients, the incidence of coronary artery plaques and lumen stenosis in DM patients was more higher than that in non-DM patients. DM patients were more likely to have more diseased vessels, especially diffuse vascular disease (12.00% vs 1.75%; P < 0.001). Subjects with high hs-CRP levels were more likely to have any plaque compared with individuals showing normal hs-CRP levels (p<0.01). There was no statistical significance in non calcified plaque with high level of hs-CRP, but the occurrence of plaque types in DM group was statistically significant compared with other hs-CRP levels in non DM group. Subjects with high hs-CRP were observed to be at increased risk for the presence of calcified plaque and severe narrowing in the unadjusted values. CONCLUSIONS: Coronary CTA combined with hs-CRP can accurately detect the characteristics of coronary artery stenosis and plaque in DM patients, which has an important clinical value in the risk assessment of coronary heart disease in DM patients.

RESUMO

Immobilization is widely used to decrease the availability of heavy metals, such as Cd and Pb, in contaminated soils. However, the spatial and temporal changes in the immobilization of soil by amendments combined with planting effects have not been studied well. In this study, unplanted and planted (with rice plants) pot experiments were used to assess the spatial and temporal changes in water-soluble Cd, Fe, Mn, and Ca. Soil properties, such as pH, redox potential (Eh), and dissolved organic carbon (DOC), were continuously recorded in both the rhizosphere and bulk soil using non-invasive rhizon samplers and a microelectrode system (Unisense). In unplanted soil, pH and Eh varied with time, but showed little radial variation from the rhizosphere to the bulk soil. The addition of hydrated lime (Ca(OH)2) sharply increased the pH, DOC, and Ca content; decreased the Eh, Fe content, and Mn content; and gradually decreased the water-soluble Cd content in the soil profile. Hydroxyapatite showed no obvious effects in reducing Cd concentrations in different soil zones. The water-soluble Fe, Mn, Ca, and DOC content did not differ significantly between soil zones over time and a non-significant correlation with water-soluble Cd was shown. In planted soil, the pH increased while the Eh value decreased with an increase in the distance from the roots, regardless of the soil amendments used during the rice growth period. Hydroxyapatite gradually increased but hydrated lime decreased the water-soluble Cd in the rhizosphere. The concentration of water-soluble Cd in the rhizosphere was higher than that of the other soil zones during rice growth. These changes lead to more Cd uptake by roots and induced Cd accumulation in rice tissues. In addition, Cd and Fe concentration in iron plaque showed a significant positive correlation with Cd in rice, indicating that iron plaque promotes the uptake and accumulation of Cd in rice with soil amendments. Compared with the control, hydroxyapatite did not significantly affect the Cd content, while Ca(OH)2 significantly reduced the Cd content in iron plaque and rice tissues. In conclusion, the application of hydrated lime can significantly reduce the risk of Cd accumulation by rice in Cd-contaminated soils under flooding conditions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Neurological disorders are an economic and public health burden which requires efficient and adequate medical resources. Currently, little is known about the status of the quality of neurological care services available in China. As neurological primary care is mostly provided at the county hospital level, investigation of this geographical level is required. The aim of this study is to evaluate currently available neurology care services in Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomerations in east China. METHODS: A multi-site, county-level hospital-based observational survey was conducted in east China from January 2017 to December 2017. A questionnaire was made to assess hospital and the departmental patient care capabilities, human resources and technical capacity in neurology departments. RESULTS: Of 228 hospitals across the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomerations, 217 documents were returned. Of these, 22 were excluded due to invalid hospital information or duplicate submission. Overall, most hospitals have neurology departments (162, 83.1%) while less than half of the hospitals have a stroke center (80, 41.0%) and neurology emergency department (46, 23.6%). Among 162 hospitals with neurology department, 5 were excluded due to inadequate sharing, leaving 157 hospitals for analysis. About 84.1% of these neurology departments can administer intravenous thrombolysis while about one third of them has the ability to perform arterial thrombectomy (36.9%). In addition, 46.2% of hospitals can carry out computed tomography angiography (CTA) in emergency room. Tertiary care hospitals are much more equipped with modern medical resources compared to the secondary hospitals. In four administrative regions, the neurology services are better in more economically advanced regions. CONCLUSIONS: Neurological care services need to be enhanced at the county-level hospitals to improve health care delivery.

RESUMO

SNPs and single base pair (SBP) insertion/deletions (indels) are not only the most abundant genetic markers for genetic mapping and breeding selection, but also always occur in the mutants generated from chemical mutagenesis or CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing. Most of the current SNP and SBP indel genotyping methods are time-consuming and/or require special equipment or reagents. Here, we describe an improved heteroduplex analysis method, named iHDA, that can readily discriminate SNP and SBP indel alleles with specially designed DNA probes that harbor a couple of nucleotides adjacent to the SNP site. By hybridizing with the same probe, SNP and SBP indel alleles form different heteroduplexes, differing in bulge size, which show different mobility on a polyacrylamide gel. Therefore, iHDA is an easy, fast and inexpensive method for SNP and SBP indel genotyping.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Cancer patients undergoing surgery are at high risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). The occurrence of VTE in Chinese cancer patients admitted to intensive care unit (ICU) for postoperative care is poorly characterized. This study was designed to investigate the incidence of VTE in this population and to evaluate the utility of the Caprini score in risk stratification. METHODS: 2127 consecutive adult patients admitted to a 10-bed surgical ICU (SICU) in a tertiary care academic hospital during a 4-year period (January 1, 2013 - December 31, 2016) were enrolled. Demographic and VTE data were collected. Data for the Caprini risk assessment model (RAM) was used to stratify patients on their risk of VTE. RESULTS: Of the 2127 patients admitted to ICU after cancer surgery, 66 (3.1%) developed symptomatic VTE. There were a total of 32 patients with pulmonary embolism (PE), 51 patients with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and 17 patients with both conditions. Based on the original Caprini RAM, 99.5% of the patients scored in the "highest risk" category (score ≥5), all patients with VTE were in the "highest risk" category. Further substratification in the "highest risk" category showed the risk of developing VTE events was significantly higher among patients with Caprini score greater than 10, as compared with patients with Caprini score of 5 to 6 (OR 5.63;95%CI 1.27-24.94), 7 to 8 (OR 2.36;95%CI 1.23-4.52 ) or 9 to 10 (OR 2.28;95%CI 1.17-4.44). The percentage of patients receiving double prophylaxis was 16.8% (358/2127), 20 of the 66 VTE patients (30.3%) received double prophylaxis before VTE was diagnosed. Patients with higher Caprini score were more likely to receive double thromboprophylaxis than patients with lower Caprini score (23.4% of patients with Caprini score>10 vs 10.8% with Caprini score 5-6). CONCLUSIONS: Though accompanied with the subutilizing of chemoprophylaxis, the overall incidence of VTE was relatively low in Chinese cancer patients admitted to ICU for postoperative care. In contrast, the Caprini score was high in this population. The original Caprini RAM was limited to stratify this population, but further substratification of "highest risk" category demonstrated the risk of developing VTE events was significantly higher in patients with Caprini score greater than 10. Future research with high quality evidence should be performed targeting on the accurate risk stratification and optimizing VTE prophylaxis for this population.

RESUMO

Effective 3D visualization is essential for connectomics analysis, where the number of neural images easily reaches over tens of thousands. A formidable challenge is to simultaneously visualize a large number of distinguishable single-neuron images, with reasonable processing time and memory for file management and 3D rendering. In the present study, we proposed an algorithm named "Kaleido" that can visualize up to at least ten thousand single neurons from the Drosophila brain using only a fraction of the memory traditionally required, without increasing computing time. Adding more brain neurons increases memory only nominally. Importantly, Kaleido maximizes color contrast between neighboring neurons so that individual neurons can be easily distinguished. Colors can also be assigned to neurons based on biological relevance, such as gene expression, neurotransmitters, and/or development history. For cross-lab examination, the identity of every neuron is retrievable from the displayed image. To demonstrate the effectiveness and tractability of the method, we applied Kaleido to visualize the 10,000 Drosophila brain neurons obtained from the FlyCircuit database ( http://www.flycircuit.tw/modules.php?name=kaleido ). Thus, Kaleido visualization requires only sensible computer memory for manual examination of big connectomics data.

RESUMO

The present study aims to investigate and compare the diagnostic and prognostic value of cavernosography with 320-row dynamic volume computed tomography (DVCT) versus conventional cavernosography in men with erectile dysfunction (ED) caused by venous leakage. A total of 174 patients diagnosed with ED were enrolled and received cavernosography with 320-row DVCT (DVCT group) and conventional cavernosography scans (control group) respectively. The diagnosis, complications, and prognosis of patients were evaluated. The DVCT group provided high-resolution images with less processing and testing time, as well as lowered radiological agent and contrast agent compared with the control group. In the DVCT group, 89 patients who were diagnosed with venous ED had six various venous leakage, namely superficial venous leakage, profundus venous leakage, the mixed type, cavernosal venous leakage, crural venous leakage, and also venous leakage between the penis and urethra cavernosum (9, 21, 32, 6, 18, and 3 cases respectively). Similarly, 74 patients out of the 81 who suffered from venous ED were classified to have superficial venous leakage (11), profundus venous leakage (14), the mixed type venous leakage (26), and middle venous leakage (23). Six out of 25 patients in the DVCT group, had improvements in ED while the remaining 19 achieved full erectile function recovery with no penile fibrosis and erectile pain. Cavernosography with 320-row DVCT is a reliable system that can be used to diagnose ED caused by venous leakage. This is especially useful in accurately determining the type of venous and allows for a better prognosis and direction of treatment.

RESUMO

Phytochemical investigation of the ethanol extract from the twigs and leaves of Croton tiglium led to the isolation of two new phorbol esters (1-2) and seven known ones (3-9). Their structures were elucidated by the analyses of extensive spectroscopic data (IR, MS, and 1D and 2D NMR) and comparing with related compounds. Meanwhile, compounds 1-9 were determined for their cytotoxic activities on human lung cancer cell line A549. Among them, 1-2 were inactive against the cell line A549 (IC50 > 100 µM), but compounds 3 and 7 showed weak activities.

RESUMO

Objective: To assess the efficacy and safety of tapentadol IR for moderate to severe pain compared to oxycodone IR. Methods: A search was carried out up to July 2015 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of tapentadol IR compared to placebo or oxycodone HCL IR 10 mg for moderate to severe pain. Studies were pooled by risk ratio (RR) and weighted mean differences (WMD) with 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: Nine RCTs (n = 3,961) were analyzed. In this meta-analysis, tapentadol IR (50-, 75-, and 100-mg doses) showed significant improvements in moderate to severe pain relief on the sum of pain intensity difference over 48 hours (SPID 48 ) scores ( P < 0.00001 or P = 0.01). No statistically significant difference among all three doses of tapentadol IR and oxycodone HCL IR 10 mg on both SPID 48 and total pain relief over 48 hours (TOTPAR 48 ) scores (all P > 0.05) was found. Compared with tapentadol IR 50 mg, tapentadol IR 75 mg demonstrated significant improvement in moderate to severe pain relief based on both SPID 48 and TOTPAR 48 scores (all P < 0.05). For total adverse events (AEs) incidence, tapentadol IR 50 and 75 mg were significantly lower than oxycodone HCL IR 10 mg. Incidence of nausea and constipation were significantly lower with either tapentadol IR 50 or 75 mg compared with oxycodone HCL IR 10 mg (all P < 0.05). Conclusions: Tapentadol IR 75 mg might be an optimal dose for moderate to severe pain control with fewer side effects. All three doses of tapentadol IR could provide comparable efficacy to oxycodone HCL IR 10 mg.

RESUMO

The opencast mine of East Junggar Basin in Xinjiang is the largest self-contained coalfield in China, and the ecological environment of the opencast is very fragile because of its arid climate and poor soil. In this study, 50 soil samples (from 0 to 30 cm depth soil at intervals of 10 cm) in opencast Mine of East Junggar Basin in Xinjiang were collected in order to explore the heavy metals contamination of the coal mining. The contents of zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), cadmium (Cr), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg) and arsenic (As) were measured and the degree of pollution was assessed by Nemerow index, geo-accumulation (Igeo) index and potential ecological risk index. In addition, the layered comparison, dust fall and the distance between coal mine and samples location were used to analyze the source of heavy metals contamination. The results showed that value of As surpassed the Chinese soil quality standard class I (GB 15618-1995) mostly severely, followed by Cr, a relatively lower surpass was obtained by Hg and Cu, while Zn and Pb did not surpass the standard. According to the standard, the soil heavy metals content of research region was in light pollution status and the pollution index for each heavy metal followed the order of As (2.07) > Cr (0.95) > Cu (0.55) > Zn (0.48) > Hg (0.45) > Pb (0.38), which demonstrated a heavy pollution of As and clean status of others. Additionally, an Igeo value of 1.14 for Hg reflected a moderated pollution. The major contribution factor was Hg with a risk index of 251.40. The source analysis showed that the content of Pb in the surface soil (10-20 cm) was different from that in the deep layer (20-30 cm), which may be caused by coal combustion and other human activities. The sources of Hg and As were similar and may come from coal combustion. The distance to the mining area was not the major factor affecting the diffusion of heavy metals, other candidate factors included terrain, aspect and wind direction, etc.
