OBJECTIVE: We investigated the efficacy of a combination of laparoscopy and bilateral uterine artery occlusion (BUAO) for the treatment of type II cesarean scar pregnancy (CSP). METHODS: Patients with type II CSP underwent laparoscopy + bilateral uterine artery embolization (control group) or laparoscopy + BUAO (study group). Data regarding the duration of surgery, intraoperative hemorrhage, postoperative complications, the duration of the hospital stay, and the costs of hospitalization were retrospectively collected. One year later, the time to the return of the ß-human chorionic gonadotropin (ß-hCG) concentration to normal and to the return of menstruation were compared. RESULTS: The duration of surgery, time to the return of menstruation, and incidence of postoperative complications in the study group were significantly less than in the control group, but there was no significant difference in the time for ß-hCG to return to normal or the volume of intraoperative hemorrhage. The duration of hospitalization and costs for the control group were higher than those for the study group. CONCLUSION: Laparoscopy in combination with BUAO is associated with minimal trauma, rapid recovery, a short duration of surgery, low cost of hospitalization, and a low postoperative complication rate. Thus, it represents a useful new surgical treatment for type II CSP.

Background: Transperineal ultrasound (TPUS) is a vital examination method for diagnosing pelvic floor diseases. However, the quality of TPUS largely relies on the operator's experience, and there is a lack of studies on the evaluation of TPUS quality. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess the quality of TPUS examinations in Chinese tertiary medical centers. Methods: This multicenter study conducted in 44 Chinese tertiary medical centers recruited postpartum women between September 2020 and September 2021. All participants underwent a standardized inquiry and TPUS examination. The participating centers were required to submit 5 parts of ultrasound data to the National Ultrasound Quality Control Center: 2-dimensional images at rest, 2-dimensional images at strain; 4-dimensional images of the levator ani hiatus; 4-dimensional images of the levator ani muscle; and 4-dimensional images of the anal sphincter. Quality assessment was performed by 2 experts with more than 5 years of experience in TPUS, and the reasons for nonqualification were stated. Results: In this study, 31 hospitals that were distributed across 20 provinces in China were included, submitting 2,251 cases in total. The overall qualified rate ranged from 12.00% to 86.92%. In each part, the qualified rate of 2-dimensional images at rest, 2-dimensional images at straining, levator ani hiatus, levator ani muscle, and anal sphincter was 94.27% (2,122/2,251), 78.54% (1,768/2,251), 85.52% (1,925/2,251), 93.03% (2,094/2,251), and 88.09% (1,983/2,251), respectively. Most of the nonqualified images belonged to 2-dimensional images at strain, and the errors in image acquisition (221/483, 45.76%) and measurement (262/483, 54.24%) were the main reasons for nonqualification. For levator ani hiatus images, error in image acquisition (275/326, 84.36%) was the main reason for nonqualification. Reconstruction error was the most common reason for nonqualification for levator ani muscle (133/157, 84.71%) and anal sphincter images (133/268, 49.63%). Conclusions: This multicenter study assessed the quality of TPUS in tertiary medical centers in China and identified the common reasons for nonqualification in each part. These findings can aid in forming the basis for quality control management and training for TPUS.

Silkworm Bombyx mori (L.) (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae) is a critical insect for silk producers, but the inappropriate application of insecticides negatively affects the physiology and behavior of silkworms. This study found that the effects of neonicotinoid insecticides applied using two spraying methods on the growth and development of silkworms were different: the median lethal concentration (LC50) values of two pesticides applied using the leaf-dipping method were 0.33 and 0.83 mg L-1 and those of two pesticides applied using the quantitative spraying method were 0.91 and 1.23 mg kg-1. The concentration of pesticides on the mulberry leaves did not decrease after their application using the quantitative spraying method, and a uniform spraying density was observed after the mulberry leaves were air-dried (no liquid) under realistic conditions. We then treated silkworms with the quantitative spraying method and leaf-dipping method. The treatment of silkworm larvae with imidacloprid and thiamethoxam at sublethal concentrations significantly prolonged the development time and significantly decreased the weight and pupation rate, as well as economic indicators of enamel layers and sputum production. Thiamethoxam treatment significantly increased the activities of carboxylesterase (CarE) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST). The activity of CarE and GST increased, decreased, and then increased, and the highest activity was detected on the 10th and 12th days. Thiamethoxam exposure significantly elevated the transcription levels of CarE-11, GSTe3 and GSTz2 and induced DNA damage in hemocytes. This study confirmed that the quantitative spray method is more stable than the leaf-dipping method. Moreover, imidacloprid and thiamethoxam treatment affected the economy and indexes of silkworms and induced changes in detoxification enzymes and DNA damage in silkworms. These results provide a basis for understanding the mechanism of the sublethal effects of insecticides on silkworms.

Nowadays, organic chemicals play an essential role in almost all walks of life and have become indispensable to modern society. However, the continually synthesized chemicals and the numerous potential adverse endpoints against living organisms increasingly promote the regulators regarding the computational approach as a crucial supplement and an alternative to the traditional animal tests in chemical risk assessment. In this present research, we evaluated the ecotoxicity of chemicals against four typical Gammarus species, which constituted a critical element in detritus cycle and also the recommended species for water monitoring. We first screened the molecular descriptors based on the Genetic Algorithm and then developed the Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship models using the Multiple Linear Regression method. The statistical results from various validation metrics suggested that the obtained models were internally robust and externally predictive. The application domain analysis based on the leverage approach and standardized residual method demonstrated the broad application range of each model. The interpretation of molecular descriptors in each model suggested that the chemicals with higher polarity and hydrophilicity tend to be less toxic, whereas the lipophilic moieties would enhance the chemical toxicity. Meanwhile, the other selected descriptors, such as Chi-cluster, heterocyclic, and distance matrix descriptors, manifested that the chemical toxicity was also affected by molecular branching, connectivity, electrotopological state, and other various properties. In summary, the present work proposed well-performed QSAR models and clarified the possible toxic mechanism of chemicals against Gammarus species. The obtained models could help predict the toxicity data and conduct a preliminary risk assessment, thus guiding the subsequent animal tests and reducing the assessment cost.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy of ultrasound and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in disease activity assessment of Takayasu arteritis (TA) with carotid involvement. METHODS: This is a cohort study of 115 patients of TA with carotid involvement. We investigated correlations between clinical data, sonographic features, and CEUS enhancement at the site most prominent lesion of each patient. Disease activity was assessed by the National Institute of Health Kerr criteria. Sonographic findings were compared with follow-up examinations. CEUS was repeated after a 3-7 months interval in 35 patients to evaluate change of CEUS enhancement after treatment. RESULTS: Extensiveness of CEUS enhancement at most prominent carotid lesions had significant correlations with disease activity by the Kerr criteria (P < .001). The specificity of extensive enhancement for indicating active disease was 95%, while sensitivity was 67%. Patients with active disease showed greater arterial wall thickness and more prominent reduction of arterial wall thickness after treatment. Most of the patients (68%) with subsided active disease after treatment featured decrease of CEUS enhancement. CONCLUSIONS: Extensiveness of enhancement by CEUS and arterial wall thickness by ultrasonography may be useful markers for initial and follow-up assessment of disease activity of TA with common carotid artery involvement.

Objective: Preoperative levels of cognition-related biomarkers and intraoperative cerebral ischemia and hypoxia might cause postoperative neurocognitive dysfunction (PND). The aim of this study was to evaluate the predictive ability of preoperative plasma biomarkers along with cerebral oxygen saturation (SctO2) for the incidence of PND in elderly patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Methods: A total of 210 patients aged 65-80 years undergoing spinal surgery were randomly assigned to three groups (n = 70 each): propofol, sevoflurane, and propofol/sevoflurane as anesthesia maintenance protocols. Propofol was administrated target-controlled infusion of 4 µg/ml (group P), the minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) of inhalation anesthetic sevoflurane was 1.3 (group S), and propofol was injected with a target-controlled plasma concentration of 1.2 µg/ml, accompanied by sevoflurane inhalation 0.7 MAC (group PS). Cognitive function was evaluated 1 day preoperatively and on the 7th day postoperatively. Preoperative levels of amyloidß-40 (Aß-40), Aß-42, total tau protein (T-tau), phosphorylated tau protein (P-tau), and triggering receptors on myeloid cells-2 (TREM2) were investigated. SctO2 was monitored intraoperatively. Results: Aß-42 had the strongest significant correlation with preoperative MoCA score. The value of Aß-42 associated with a high risk of PND was 28.34 pg/ml, and the area under the curve (AUC) was predicted to be 0.711. When the preoperative level of Aß-42 was 28.34 pg/ml, SctO2max% was 9.92%. The AUC was predicted to be 0.872, and the sensitivity and specificity were 0.833 and 0.841, respectively. Conclusion: Under the conditions of preoperative Aß-42 less than 28.34 pg/ml, the intraoperative fluctuation range of cerebral oxygen saturation should be maintained within 9.92% to reduce the occurrence of PND in geriatric patients with MCI.

Purpose. This paper aimed to study how to analyze and study economic and social development under the new crown epidemic based on the neural network and described the BP neural network. Methodology. Economic forecasts are affected by multiple influencing factors, the relationships between these factors are complex, and it is a nonlinear system with a high degree of uncertainty. The use of traditional forecasting methods has many limitations, and neural network methods can overcome these limitations and achieve good nonlinear forecasting. Research Findings. Through the analysis and statistics of the impact of the SARS epidemic and the new crown epidemic on the economy, by 2021, the economic contribution of final consumption expenditure, total capital formation, and net exports will be 65.4%, 13.7%, and 20.9%, respectively, and the impact of the current new crown virus epidemic on the economy will be greater than that of the SARS epidemic in 2003. Research Implications. The model applied to economic forecasting based on the BP network can achieve good forecasting effect, and scientific and reasonable forecasting methods depend on the in-depth understanding of economic activities and dominance of familiarity with economic theory. Practical Implications. Through the analysis of the economy in the context of political will and the new crown epidemic, it will give more reference to more and more complex emergencies in the future.

Purpose: Superb microvascular imaging (SMI) has led to new advances in vascular imaging applications. This study aimed to explore the blood supply and feeding arteries of carotid body tumors (CBTs) on SMI to improve the accuracy of information available to surgeons. Methods: Twenty-six CBT lesions were subjected to color Doppler flow imaging (CDFI) and SMI and were later confirmed by pathology. The blood flow patterns and feeding arteries of the CBTs on CDFI and SMI were graded and compared. Results: The feeding arteries of two CBT lesions, which were not visible on CDFI, were identified as the internal carotid artery (ICA) on SMI. The feeding arteries of three CBTs were judged to stem from both the ICA and the external carotid artery (ECA) (MIX) based on SMI compared to the ICA or ECA on CDFI. We classified the feeding arteries of CBTs as originating from the ICA or others (including the ECA and MIX). One hundred percent (3/3) of the CBT lesions stemming from the ICA had Adler I or Adler II blood flow patterns, and 100% (23/23) of the CBT lesions stemming from other arteries had Adler II or Adler III blood flow patterns. Higher Adler categories were assigned based on SMI than CDFI (P < 0.001). Conclusion: SMI may be superior to CDFI in detecting the vascularity of CBTs, and SMI revealed more potential feeding arteries of CBTs than CDFI. CBTs originating from the ICA are less vascular than those originating from the ECA.

Free-trade zones are highlands of regional development that have a radiating effect on surrounding cities. This paper uses Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration (YRDUA) data from 2003 to 2018, to examine the impact of the China (Shanghai) pilot free-trade zone (SPFTZ) on green total factor productivity (GTFP) in the YRDUA. It uses the regression discontinuity (RD) method and analyzes the influence mechanism with the help of the mediating effect model. The paper presents the following major findings. The establishment of the SPFTZ significantly promoted GTFP in the YRDUA, with technological progress being the main driving force. An analysis using the mediating effect model found that financial efficiency and industrial structure upgrading play a complete mediating role in GTFP growth in the YRDUA. Therefore, the SPFTZ should make use of its policy advantages, take full advantage of the effect of the green growth pole, and promote green mutual development with the YRDUA.

Providing high-quality medical services is of great importance in the imaging department, as there is a growing focus on personal health, and high-quality services can lead to improved patient outcomes. Many quality improvement (QI) programs with good guidance and fine measurement for improvement have been reported to be effective. In order to improve the quality of ultrasound departments in China, we conducted this study of a national quality improvement program. A total of 1297 public hospitals were included in this QI program on ultrasound departments in China from 2017 to 2019. The effect of this QI program was investigated, and potential factors, including hospital level and local economic development, were considered. The outcome indicators, the positive rate and diagnostic accuracy, were improved significantly between the two phases (positive rate, 2017 vs. 2019: 66.21% vs. 73.91%, p < 0.001; diagnostic accuracy, 2017 vs. 2019: 85.37% vs. 89.74%; p < 0.001). Additionally, they were improved in secondary and tertiary hospitals, with the improvement in secondary hospitals being greater. Notably, the enhancement of diagnostic accuracy in low-GDP provinces was almost 20%, which was more significant than the enhancement in high-GDP provinces. However, the important structural indicator, the doctor-to-patient ratio, decreased from 1.05:10,000 to 0.96:10,000 (p = 0.026). This study suggests that the national ultrasound QI program improved the outcome indicators, with secondary-level hospitals improving more than tertiary hospitals and low-GDP provinces improving more than high-GDP regions. Additionally, as there is a growing need for ultrasound examinations, more ultrasound doctors are needed in China.

Background: Improved stroke risk stratification may improve stroke prevention. We aimed to study the value of a novel Doppler method, superb microvascular imaging (SMI), in correlating plaque thickness and evidence of intra-plaque neovascularization with a history stroke and TIA involving any cerebrovascular territory among community residents considered at high stroke risk. Methods: We selected residents aged at least 40 years from the Donghuashi community in China who had at least three stroke risk factors (including a history of stroke or TIA) and carotid plaque thickness of at least 1.5 mm (but without heavy calcification) and no history of carotid endarterectomy or stenting. In this cross-sectional study, each subject underwent carotid plaque examination with standard ultrasound and SMI. SMI evidence of plaque neovascularization was categorized as none or mild (Grade 1) or moderate or marked (Grade 2) and correlated with past history of stroke or TIA. Results: A total of 131 individuals (mean age 69 ± 8 years, 63% male) met the study inclusion criteria. SMI revealed no or mild neovascularization in 74 subjects (56.5%) and moderate or marked neovascularization in 57 subjects (43.5%). Subjects with moderate or marked neovascularization were more likely to have a history of any territory stroke or TIA, 43.9 vs. 17.6% (P = 0.001). Multivariate logistic regression analyses showed a thicker plaque (odds ratio: 2.272, 95% CI: 1.351-3.822, P = 0.002) and a history of stroke or TIA (odds ratio: 4.017, 95% CI: 1.719-9.387, P = 0.001) significantly correlated with evidence of moderate to marked intra-plaque neovascularization. Conclusions: Moderate to marked intraplaque neovascularization detected by SMI was more likely in subjects with a history of any territory stroke or TIA or thicker plaque. This indicates a potential new role of SMI in stratifying future risk of stroke or other arterial disease complications.

Efficient approaches with high precision are essential for understanding the formation and stability of noncovalent interaction complexes. Here, 21 noncovalent interaction complexes involving π-system are selected and grouped in three subsets according to ETS-NOCV method: dispersion-dominated, electrostatic-dominated, and mixed. We mainly focus on examining the performance of random-phase approximation (RPA) on these π systems. The tested RPA-based method includes standard RPA and its variants including the related single excitations (SEs), renormalized single excitations (rSEs), second-order screened exchange (SOSEX), and the renormalized second-order perturbation theory (rPT2). The routine second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) and three popular DFT-D functionals (M06-2X-D3, ωB97XD, and PBE-D3(BJ)) are also assessed for comparison. In this work, besides the calculation of interaction energies at Dunning-type aug-cc-pVDZ and aug-cc-pVTZ basis set, we also present a larger database of interaction energies calculated using MP2 and RPA methods with Dunning-type aug-cc-pVQZ basis set. An accurate CCSD(T)/CBS scheme is used to provide benchmark database. In addition to the high-level results, we also provide potential energy surfaces (PES) of different interaction type. Among all the tested methods, MP2 has a satisfactory performance on electrostatic-dominated and mixed-type systems, except for dispersion-dominated systems. DFT-D functionals, especially ωB97XD functional, has a balanced performance across all the tested systems. Importantly, for RPA-based methods, the calculation accuracy can be dramatically improved by taking into account SE or exchange effects, especially in the mixed complexes. We conclude that rPT2 among all the test RPA-based methods gives an overall satisfactory performance across different interaction types. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

BACKGROUND: The epidemiological characteristics of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in the autonomous region of Xinjiang Uygur have been largely unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence and demographic risk factors of SCD in Xinjiang, China. METHODS: This retrospective study reviewed medical records from 11 regions in Xinjiang with different geography (north and south of the Tian Shan mountain range), gross domestic product, and ethnicity (Han, Uyghur, Kazakh, and Hui). SCD was defined as unexpected death due to cardiac reasons within 1 hour after the onset of acute symptoms, including sudden death, unexpected death, and nonviolent death. Monitoring was conducted throughout 2015. Demographic and mortality data were recorded and age-adjusted standardized risk ratio (SRR) was analyzed. RESULTS: Among 3,224,103 residents, there were 13,308 all-cause deaths and 1244 events of SCD (784 men and 460 women; overall incidence 38.6 per 100,000 residents). SCD was associated with age (χ2 = 2105.3), but not geography. Men had an increased risk of SCD compared with women (SRR: 1.75, 95% CI: 1.10-2.79). The risk of SCD was highest in residents of the Uyghur (SRR: 1.59, 95% CI: 1.05-2.42) and Kazakh (SRR: 1.92, 95% CI: 1.29-2.87) compared with those of the Han. Poor economic development was associated with elevated risk of SCD (SRR: 1.55, 95% CI: 1.02-2.38). CONCLUSION: SCD is an important public health issue in China. Our understanding of the demographic differences on SCD in Xinjiang, China may improve the risk stratification and management to reduce the incidence and lethality of SCD.

Organic waste is an important biomass resource. In this study the definition of coefficients for the calculation of all the secondary 10 forestry residue categories was improved and established according to literature reviewing of previous reports between 1982 and 2017. The rationality of value-taking for each coefficient in previous literature was examined by tracing to its citation sources. The irrational, or unstudied coefficients were assessed using the data in previous reports or questionnaire surveys. Lastly, values of the coefficient for the calculation of woody nursery residue, forest woody pruning residue, wood logging residue, firewood, wood bucking residue, wood handling residue, waste wood, banana and pineapple plant residue, bamboo processing residue and waste bamboo were reasonably assessed in this study.

The binding energy is of great importance in understanding the formation and stability of noncovalent interactions. However, the determination of the binding energy with high precision and efficiency in medium- and long-range noncovalent interactions is still challenging for quantum chemistry. Here, we assess the performance of random-phase approximation (RPA), a fully non-local fifth-rung of the Jacob ladder functional, in determining the binding energy of cation-π systems (cation = Li+, Na+, Be2+, Mg2+, Al+, and NH4+; π = C6H6), which, to the best of our knowledge, has not been investigated. Using experimental results as the benchmark, we systematically compared the RPA method to the other ab initio methods (DFT/B3LYP, MP2, CCSD(T), and QCISD(T)) both in calculation accuracy and efficiency. From the perspective of accuracy, RPA is the best among these approaches, followed by the CCSD(T) and QCISD(T) methods. DFT/B3LYP and MP2 provide the worst accuracy. In addition, the computational efficiency of RPA is much faster than that of CCSD(T) and QCISD(T). We believe that RPA is a robust method for the precise description of medium- and long-range noncovalent interactions and is capable of providing benchmarking data. The interaction strength and interaction nature of cation-π systems are further analyzed by atoms in molecules (AIM) and the color-mapped reduced density gradient (RDG) isosurface, which are consistent with the characteristics of a typical cation-π interaction.

Spatial variability of soil organic matter and its distribution pattern are the hot issues of soil scientific research. Selecting Haigouhe watershed as the study area, this paper mainly focused on the spatial variability, distribution pattern and its impact factors of SOM in the surface soil by classical statistics, Geo-statistics and "3S" technology. The results showed that: compared with the other black soil areas, the SOM content in Haigouhe watershed was a little lower, there was a spatial autocorrelation, and a moderate variability. Random factors, such as human activities, cultivation measures and so on, had little impact on the spatial variation, while the structural factors had a dominant function, and there was a remarkable spatial anisotropy of SOM. The SOM content reduced gradually from east to west with the familiar changes of height, so the co-kriging interpolation, selecting elevation as the co-variate, was employed to improve the accuracy. The spatial variability of SOM and its distribution pattern in Haigouhe watershed were greatly affected by topography and land use but weakly influenced by traffic, villages and other social factors. The surrounding environment of the samples would increase the uncertainty of spatial variability and interpolation of SOM and it cannot be ignored in future studies. In summary, it was a significant scientific research to analyze the spatial variability, distribution pattern of SOM and its main impact factors in a mollisol hilly watershed of China.

Soil salinity is becoming the key constraints factor to agricultural production. Therefore, the plant especially the crops possessing capacities of salt tolerance will be of great economic significance. The adaptation or tolerance of plant to salinity stress involves a series of physiological, metabolic and molecular mechanisms. Halophytes are the kind of organisms which acquire special salt tolerance mechanisms to respond to the salt tress and ensure normal growth and development under saline conditions in their lengthy evolutionary adaptation, so understanding how halophytes respond to salinity stress will provide us with methods and tactics to foster and develop salt resistant varieties of crops. The strategies in physiological and molecular level adopted by halophytes are various including the changes in photosynthetic and transpiration rate, the sequestration of Na+ to extracellular or vacuole, the regulation of stomata aperture and stomatal density, the accumulation and synthesis of the phytohormones as well as the relevant gene expression underlying these physiological traits, such as the stress signal transduction, the regulation of the transcription factors, the activation and expression of the transporter genes, the activation or inhibition of the synthetases and so on. This review focuses on the research advances of the regulating mechanisms in halophytes from physiological to molecular, which render the halophytes tolerance and adaption to salinity stress.

OBJECTIVE: This study used con-beam computed tomography (CBCT) to investigate the prevalence and severity of alveolar bone loss in middle-aged (40-59 years) Chinese with chronic periodontitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study group comprised 145 dentate individuals aged 40 to 59 years residing in China who suffered from chronic periodontitis. CBCT and the application of NNT software were used to examine the level and location of alveolar bone loss. RESULTS: The study revealed that 40-59 year old patients with chronic periodontitis had severe bone loss. At 5,286 sites (34.7%), alveolar bone loss was mild; severe alveolar bone loss was found at 5,978 sites (39.2%). A comparison of bone loss in different jaws revealed that the area with the highest degree of bone loss was on the lingual side of the maxillary molar (56.3 ± 7.2%), and that the area with the lowest degree was primarily on the lingual side of the mandibular canine (27.5 ± 6.3%). There was a lower degree of alveolar bone loss in males than females. Differences were observed when comparing the incidence of bone loss between males and females (P < 0.05). Menopause in females and smoking in both genders may affect the level of bone loss. Male smokers experienced a greater degree of bone loss (41.67 ± 5.76%) than male non-smokers (32.95 ± 4.31%). A 42.23 ± 6.34% bone loss was found in menopausal females versus 31.35 ± 3.62% in non-menopausal females. CONCLUSIONS: The study revealed that different sites and teeth exhibited a diverse degree of bone loss. In middle-aged patients with chronic periodontitis, the highest degrees of bone loss in the incisors, premolars, and molars were on the lingual side, mesial side and lingual side, respectively. Menopause in females and smoking may affect the level of bone loss.

Periconceptional supplementation with folic acid reduces the occurrence of neural tube defects (NTDs). The association between maternal abnormalities in homocysteine metabolism (e.g., hyperhomocysteinaemia, folate deficiency and low vitamin B12) and the risk of NTDs-affected pregnancies has been widely evaluated in recent years, although the results are conflicting. To investigate this inconsistency, we performed a meta-analysis of 32 studies, involving 1,890 NTD-affected mothers and 3,995 control mothers, to develop an understanding of the relationship between maternal biomarkers related to one-carbon metabolism and NTD. A random-effects model was used to calculate the ratio of means (RoM) between the cases and controls, along with the 95% confidence intervals (CIs). A significant increase in homocysteine levels was observed in NTD-affected mothers compared with controls (RoM: 1.16, 95% CI: 1.09-1.23, P = 1.8 × 10(-6)). The pooled analysis also revealed that NTD-affected mothers had significantly lower levels of folate (RoM: 0.93, 95% CI: 0.88-0.97, P = 0.002), vitamin B12 (RoM: 0.91, 95% CI: 0.87-0.95, P = 3.6 × 10(-5)) and red blood cell folate (RoM: 0.92, 95% CI: 0.86-0.98, P = 0.01). Therefore, altered plasma levels of biomarkers related to one-carbon metabolism are associated with NTD-affected pregnancies.

AIM: To evaluate the role of the (13)C-methacetin breath test ((13)C-MBT) in the assessment of acute liver injury in a rat model. METHODS: Acute liver injury in rats was induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of D-galactosamine (D-GalN). Forty-eight male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to a control group (n = 8) and five model groups (each n = 8), and acute liver injury was assessed at different time points (6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 h) after D-GalN injection. The (13)C-MBT, biochemical tests, 15-min retention rate of indocyanine green (ICGR15), and liver biopsy were performed and compared between the control and model groups. Correlations between parameters of the (13)C-MBT (Tmax, MVmax, CUM120 and DOBmax), biochemical tests, ICGR15 and liver necrosis score were also analyzed using Spearman's correlation analysis. RESULTS: Tmax, MVmax, CUM120 and DOBmax, as well as most of the traditional methods, correlated with the liver necrosis score (r = 0.493, P < 0.05; r = -0.731, P < 0.01; r = -0.618, P < 0.01; r = -0.592, P < 0.01, respectively). MVmax, CUM120 and DOBmax rapidly decreased and were lower than those in the controls as early as 6 h after D-GalN injection (3.84 ± 0.84 vs 5.06 ± 0.78, P < 0.01; 3.35 ± 0.72 vs 4.21 ± 1.44, P < 0.05; 52.3 ± 20.58 vs 75.1 ± 9.57, P < 0.05, respectively) and reached the lowest point 24 h after D-GalN injection. MVmax, CUM120 and DOBmax returned to normal levels 72 h after D-GalN injection and preceded most of the traditional methods, including liver biopsy. CONCLUSION: The (13)C-MBT is a sensitive tool for the timely detection of acute liver injury and early prediction of recovery in a rat model. Further clinical studies are warranted to validate its role in patients with acute liver injury.
