Ectropis grisescens Warren is one of the most important pests of tea plants. In this study, data on the development, survival, and fecundity of E. grisescens were collected at 15, 22, and 32 °C and analyzed by using the age-stage, two-sex life table. At 15 °C, the duration of the preadult period of E. grisescens was significantly prolonged (81.06 days), with high mortality (69.0%), and the proportion of emerged female adults was extremely low (7.0%). At 32 °C, the preadult period was significantly shortened (29.12 days), with high preadult mortality (74.0%), and a low proportion of emerged female adults (15.0%). At 22 °C, with low preadult mortality (24.0%), and a high proportion of emerged female adults (26.0%). The overall effects of the shorter preadult duration, higher preadult survival rate, higher proportion of emerged female adults, higher fecundity (F = 350.88 eggs/♀), and higher net reproductive rate (R0 = 91.23 offspring/individual) at 22 °C resulted in the highest values of the intrinsic rate of increase (r = 0.1054 days-1) and finite rate of increase (λ = 1.1112 days-1). Computer simulation showed that E. grisescens populations can increase much faster at 22 °C than at 15 and 32 °C. The weighted population size and cumulative weighted insect-days provided the dynamics necessary for estimating the damage potential of E. grisescens in devising economical pest management programs. Our results demonstrate that populations of E. grisescens were able to develop at a broad range of temperatures and adapt to the high temperatures. These finding can be utilized to improve the management of E. grisescens.

Intensive aquaculture combatting the decline of large yellow croaker populations can trigger bacterial outbreaks, resulting in extensive antibiotic use. In this study, we screened 5 aquaculture sites in the coastal areas of Zhejiang and identified 17 antibiotics in large yellow croakers using UPLC-MS/MS. The distribution and occurrence of antibiotic pollutants were different in the different tissues of large yellow croakers, being primarily dominated by quinolones. Relatively higher average residue levels of enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin were detected in the inedible parts, specifically the gills (37.29 µg/kg). Meanwhile, relatively high average residue levels of enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin were also found in the edible parts, particularly in the muscle (23.18 µg/kg). We observed that the residue levels detected in the swim bladder exceeded the prescribed limit for fish muscle, but there is currently no specific regulatory limit established for this particular tissue. Despite the HI values of enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin being below 0.01, the health risks should not be disregarded. The findings of this research provide significant practical implications for assessing antibiotic contamination and enhancing the risk management of coastal regions.

Although costimulatory molecules have been shown to boost antitumor immune responses, their significance in stomach adenocarcinoma (STAD) remains unknown. The purpose of this study was to examine the gene expression patterns of costimulatory molecule genes in patients with STAD and develop a predictive signature to aid in therapy selection and outcome prediction. We used 60 costimulatory family genes from prior research to conduct the first complete costimulatory molecular analysis in patients with STAD. In the two study groups, consensus clustering analysis based on these 60 genes indicated unique distribution patterns and prognostic differences. Using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator and Cox regression analysis, we identified nine costimulatory molecular gene pairs (CMGPs) with prognostic value. With these nine CMGPs, we were able to develop a costimulatory molecule-related prognostic signature that performed well in an external dataset. For the patients with STAD, the signature was proven to be a risk factor independent of the clinical characteristics, indicating that this signature may be employed in conjunction with clinical considerations. A further connection between the signature and immunotherapy response was discovered. The patients with high mutation rates, an abundance of infiltrating immune cells, and an immunosuppressive milieu were classified as high-risk patients. It is possible that these high-risk patients have a better prognosis for immunotherapy since they have higher cytolytic activity scores and immunophenoscores of CTLA4 and PD-L1/PD-L2 blockers. Therefore, our signature may help clinicians in assessing patient prognosis and developing treatment plans.

Welding is widely used in the connection of metallic structures, including welded joints in oil/gas metallic pipelines and other structures. The welding process is vulnerable to the inclusion of different types of welding defects, such as lack of penetration and undercut. These defects often initialize early-age cracking and induced corrosion. Moreover, welding-induced defects often accompany other types of mechanical damage, thereby leading to more challenges in damage detection. As such, identification of weldment defects and interaction with other mechanical damages at their early stage is crucial to ensure structural integrity and avoid potential premature failure. The current strategies of damage identification are achieved using ultrasonic guided wave approaches that rely on a change in physical parameters of propagating waves to discriminate as to whether there exist damaged states or not. However, the inherently complex nature of weldment, the complication of damages interactions, and large-scale/long span structural components integrated with structure uncertainties pose great challenges in data interpretation and making an informed decision. Artificial intelligence and machine learning have recently become emerging methods for data fusion, with great potential for structural signal processing through decoding ultrasonic guided waves. Therefore, this study aimed to employ the deep learning method, convolutional neural network (CNN), for better characterization of damage features in terms of welding defect type, severity, locations, and interaction with other damage types. The architecture of the CNN was set up to provide an effective classifier for data representation and data fusion. A total of 16 damage states were designed for training and calibrating the accuracy of the proposed method. The results revealed that the deep learning method enables effectively and automatically extracting features of ultrasonic guided waves and yielding high precise prediction for damage detection of structures with welding defects in complex situations. In addition, the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed methods for structure uncertainties using different embedding materials, and data under noise interference, was also validated and findings demonstrated that the proposed deep learning methods still exhibited a high accuracy at high noise levels.

The modified Carnegie-Ames-Stanford Approach (CASA) model based on the comprehensive and sequential classification system of grasslands (CSCS, a unique vegetation classification system) was used to determine grassland net primary production (NPP) in Gansu province from 1982 to 2011 and its spatio-temporal variability. The relationship between NPP and climate drivers was analyzed. The results showed that annual NPP of grasslands in Gansu province averaged 139.30 gC m-2 yr -1 during the study period. NPP decreased from southeast to northwest across the province. Grassland NPP showed an increasing trend during the period 1982-2011, and the increase rate over the whole period was 92.91%. The highest NPP appeared in summer with more precipitation and higher cumulative temperature conditions; while the lowest values existed in winter. The largest correlation coefficient was found between the average annual NPP and the average annual precipitation (r = 0.77), followed by annual NPP and solar radiation (r = 0.70) or NDVI (r = 0.69), Annual NPP had no significant correlation with annual cumulative temperature (>0°C) or moisture index (K-value). Thus, precipitation is the major controlling factor on the average annual NPP in Gansu grassland. Solar radiation and NDVI also have important effects on grassland NPP in Gansu. These results may provide basic information for sustainable development and utilization of grassland and for the improvement and protection of the ecological environment as well.

BACKGROUND: Stroke disproportionately affects people in low-income and middle-income countries. Although improvements in stroke care and outcomes have been reported in high-income countries, little is known about practice and outcomes in low and middle-income countries. We aimed to compare patterns of care available and their association with patient outcomes across countries at different economic levels. METHODS: We studied the patterns and effect of practice variations (ie, treatments used and access to services) among participants in the INTERSTROKE study, an international observational study that enrolled 13 447 stroke patients from 142 clinical sites in 32 countries between Jan 11, 2007, and Aug 8, 2015. We supplemented patient data with a questionnaire about health-care and stroke service facilities at all participating hospitals. Using univariate and multivariate regression analyses to account for patient casemix and service clustering, we estimated the association between services available, treatments given, and patient outcomes (death or dependency) at 1 month. FINDINGS: We obtained full information for 12 342 (92%) of 13 447 INTERSTROKE patients, from 108 hospitals in 28 countries; 2576 from 38 hospitals in ten high-income countries and 9766 from 70 hospitals in 18 low and middle-income countries. Patients in low-income and middle-income countries more often had severe strokes, intracerebral haemorrhage, poorer access to services, and used fewer investigations and treatments (p<0·0001) than those in high-income countries, although only differences in patient characteristics explained the poorer clinical outcomes in low and middle-income countries. However across all countries, irrespective of economic level, access to a stroke unit was associated with improved use of investigations and treatments, access to other rehabilitation services, and improved survival without severe dependency (odds ratio [OR] 1·29; 95% CI 1·14-1·44; all p<0·0001), which was independent of patient casemix characteristics and other measures of care. Use of acute antiplatelet treatment was associated with improved survival (1·39; 1·12-1·72) irrespective of other patient and service characteristics. INTERPRETATION: Evidence-based treatments, diagnostics, and stroke units were less commonly available or used in low and middle-income countries. Access to stroke units and appropriate use of antiplatelet treatment were associated with improved recovery. Improved care and facilities in low-income and middle-income countries are essential to improve outcomes. FUNDING: Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland.

Freezing is a practical method for meat preservation but the quality of frozen meat can deteriorate with storage time. This research investigated the effect of frozen storage time (up to 66 months) on changes in DNA yield, purity and integrity in beef, and further analyzed the correlation between beef quality (moisture content, protein content, TVB-N value and pH value) and DNA quality in an attempt to establish a reliable, high-throughput method for meat quality control. Results showed that frozen storage time influenced the yield and integrity of DNA significantly (p < 0.05). The DNA yield decreased as frozen storage time increased due to DNA degradation. The half-life (t1/2 = ln2/0.015) was calculated as 46 months. The DNA quality degraded dramatically with the increased storage time based on gel electrophoresis results. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products from both mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and nuclear DNA (nDNA) were observed in all frozen beef samples. Using real-time PCR for quantitative assessment of DNA and meat quality revealed that correlations could be established successfully with mathematical models to evaluate frozen beef quality.

Effects of human tribbles homolog 3 (TRIB3) genetic variation (c.251 A>G, Gln84Arg, rs2295490) on the clinical outcomes of vascular events has not been evaluated in patients with type 2 diabetes after blood pressure lowering and glucose controlling treatment. We did an analysis of a 2×2 factorial (glucose control axis and blood pressure lowering axis) randomized controlled clinical trial at 61 centers in China, with a follow-up period of 5years. The major vascular endpoints were the composites of death from cardio-cerebral vascular diseases, non-fatal stroke and myocardial infraction, new or worsening renal and diabetic eye disease. A total of 1884 participants were included in our research with a 4.8years median follow-up. For glucose lowering axis, patients with TRIB3 (rs2295490) AA (n=609) genotype exhibited significantly reduced risk of major vascular events compared with AG+GG (n=335) genotype carriers (Hazard ratio 0.72, 95% CI 0.55-0.94, p=0.016), Paradoxically, the risk of vascular events were significantly increased in patients with AA (n=621) compared to AG+GG (n=319) genotype for intensive glucose control (Hazard ratio 1.46, 95% CI, 1.06­2.17, p = 0.018) [corrected]. . For blood pressure lowering axis, marginally significant difference was found between TRIB3 variant and coronary events. Our findings suggest that good glucose and blood pressure control exhibited greater benefits on vascular outcomes in patients with TRIB3 (rs2295490) G allele.

24-h urinary sodium excretion is the gold standard for evaluating dietary sodium intake, but it is often not feasible in large epidemiological studies due to high participant burden and cost. Three methods--Kawasaki, INTERSALT, and Tanaka--have been proposed to estimate 24-h urinary sodium excretion from a spot urine sample, but these methods have not been validated in the general Chinese population. This aim of this study was to assess the validity of three methods for estimating 24-h urinary sodium excretion using spot urine samples against measured 24-h urinary sodium excretion in a Chinese sample population. Data are from a substudy of the Prospective Urban Rural Epidemiology (PURE) study that enrolled 120 participants aged 35 to 70 years and collected their morning fasting urine and 24-h urine specimens. Bias calculations (estimated values minus measured values) and Bland-Altman plots were used to assess the validity of the three estimation methods. 116 participants were included in the final analysis. Mean bias for the Kawasaki method was -740 mg/day (95% CI: -1219, 262 mg/day), and was the lowest among the three methods. Mean bias for the Tanaka method was -2305 mg/day (95% CI: -2735, 1875 mg/day). Mean bias for the INTERSALT method was -2797 mg/day (95% CI: -3245, 2349 mg/day), and was the highest of the three methods. Bland-Altman plots indicated that all three methods underestimated 24-h urinary sodium excretion. The Kawasaki, INTERSALT and Tanaka methods for estimation of 24-h urinary sodium excretion using spot urines all underestimated true 24-h urinary sodium excretion in this sample of Chinese adults. Among the three methods, the Kawasaki method was least biased, but was still relatively inaccurate. A more accurate method is needed to estimate the 24-h urinary sodium excretion from spot urine for assessment of dietary sodium intake in China.

OBJECTIVES: To assess risk factors associated with non-fatal injuries (NFIs) from road traffic accidents (RTAs) or falls. METHODS: Our study included 151 609 participants from the Prospective Urban Rural Epidemiological study. Participants reported whether they experienced injuries within the past 12 months that limited normal activities. Additional questions elicited data on risk factors. We employed multivariable logistic regression to analyse data. RESULTS: Overall, 5979 participants (3.9% of 151 609) reported at least one NFI. Total number of NFIs was 6300: 1428 were caused by RTAs (22.7%), 1948 by falls (30.9%) and 2924 by other causes (46.4%). Married/common law status was associated with fewer falls, but not with RTA. Age 65-70 years was associated with fewer RTAs, but more falls; age 55-64 years was associated with more falls. Male versus female was associated with more RTAs and fewer falls. In lower-middle-income countries, rural residence was associated with more RTAs and falls; in low-income countries, rural residence was associated with fewer RTAs. Previous alcohol use was associated with more RTAs and falls; current alcohol use was associated with more falls. Education was not associated with either NFI type. CONCLUSIONS: This study of persons aged 35-70 years found that some risk factors for NFI differ according to whether the injury is related to RTA or falls. Policymakers may use these differences to guide the design of prevention policies for RTA-related or fall-related NFI.
