RESUMO

Hand-wrist radiography is the most common and accurate method for evaluating children's bone age. To reduce the scattered radiation of radiosensitive organs in bone age assessment, we designed a small X-ray instrument with radioprotection function by adding metal enclosure for X-ray shielding. We used a phantom operator to compare the scattered radiation doses received by sensitive organs under three different protection scenarios (proposed instrument, radiation personal protective equipment, no protection). The proposed instrument showed greater reduction in the mean dose of a single exposure compared with radiation personal protective equipment especially on the left side which was proximal to the X-ray machine (≥80.0% in eye and thyroid, ≥99.9% in breast and gonad). The proposed instrument provides a new pathway towards more convenient and efficient radioprotection.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Superficial temporal artery-middle cerebral artery (STA-MCA) bypass is a common surgery in treating moyamoya disease (MMD) with occluded MCA. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation might provide a simple, non-invasive, and low-cost tool to evaluate the efficacy of STA-MCA surgery. AIM: We aim to quantitatively investigate the treatment efficacy of STA-MCA surgery in improving the blood flow of MMD patients using CFD simulation. METHODS: This retrospective study included 11 MMD patients with occlusion around proximal MCA who underwent STA-MCA bypass surgery. CFD simulation was performed using patient-specific blood pressure and postoperative artery geometry. The volumetric flow rates of STA and the bypass, average flow velocity in the proximal segment of transcranial bypass, transcranial pressure drop, and transcranial flow resistance were measured and compared with a postoperative increment of cerebral blood flow (CBF) in MCA territories derived from perfusion imaging. Per-branch pressure drop from model inlet to bypass branch outlet was calculated. RESULTS: The volumetric flow rates of STA and the bypass were 80.84 ± 14.54 mL/min and 46.03 ± 4.21 mL/min. Average flow velocity in proximal bypass, transcranial pressure drop, and transcranial flow resistance were 0.19 ± 0.07 m/s, 3.72 ± 3.10 mmHg, and 6.54 ± 5.65 10-8 Pa s m-3. Postoperative mean increment of CBF in MCA territories was 16.03 ± 11.72 mL·100 g-1·min-1. Per-branch pressure drop was 10.96 ± 5.59 mmHg and 7.26 ± 4.25 mmHg in branches with and without stenosis. CONCLUSIONS: CFD simulation results are consistent with CBF observation in verifying the efficacy of STA-MCA bypass, where postoperative stenosis may influence the hemodynamics.

RESUMO

Antibiotics are widely consumed in the intensive mariculture industry. A better understanding of the effect of antibiotics on intergenerational antibiotic resistance in organisms is urgent since intergenerational transmission is crucial for the spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment. Herein, marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) chronically exposed to low doses of sulfamethazine (SMZ) hormetically affected the progeny, characterized by increased richness and diversity of fecal microbiota and intestinal barrier-related gene up-regulation. Progeny immunity was modulated and caused by genetic factors due to the absence of significant SMZ accumulation in F1 embryos. In addition, some of the top genera in the progeny were positively correlated with immune diseases, while the expression of some immune-related genes, such as TNFα, IL1R2, and TLR3 changed significantly. This further indicated that the host selection caused by changes in progeny immunity was probably the primary determinant of progeny intestinal microbial colonization. Metagenomic analysis revealed that Proteobacteria represented the primary carriers of ARGs, while parental SMZ exposure facilitated the distribution and enrichment of multiple ARGs involved in the antibiotic inactivation in the progeny by promoting the diversity of Gammaproteobacteria and Bacteroidetes, further illustrating that antibiotic selection pressure persisted even if the offspring were not exposed. Therefore, SMZ induced hormesis in the progeny at the expense of increasing antibiotic resistance. Collectively, these findings provide a comprehensive overview of the intergenerational effect of antibiotics and serve as a reminder that the ARG transmission induced by the intergenerational impact of antibiotics on organisms should not be ignored.

RESUMO

Northern Dvina River is one of the largest rivers in the European Arctic flowing into the White Sea through the populated regions with developed industry. Floating plastics include microplastics (0.5-5 mm) and mesoplastics (5-25 mm) were observed on seasonal variations in the Northern Dvina River mouth. The samples were collected every month from September to November 2019 and from May to October 2020 with a Neuston net that was togged 3 nautical miles in the Korbel'nyy Branch of the River delta. Chemical composition of the plastic particles was determined using a Fourier transmission infrared spectrometer. The majority of the microplastics were identified as polyethylene 52.6%, followed by polypropylene 36.8%. After estimating the export fluxes of microplastics from the Northern Dvina River to the Arctic, there is no significant seasonal variation of the river export of microplastics. The microplastics export rate during the spring flood period in May turned out to be maximum, 58 items/s, while the minimum discharge was in September with a value of 9 items/s. The average weight concentration of microplastics was 18.5 µg/m3, which is higher than it was found in the Barents Sea - 12.5 µg/m3 and several times higher than in the Eurasian Arctic on average - 3.7 µg/m3. These results indicate that the Northern Dvina River is being one of the main sources of microplastic pollution of the White and the Barents Seas.

RESUMO

Imposex is a genital disorder characterized by imposition of male sexual characteristics in female gastropods due to exposure to tributyltin (TBT). TBT is used as biocidal agent in antifouling paints, applied on the ship hulls and marine submerged structures such as fishing gears and buoys. In the present study bioassay experiment was carried out to determine imposex inductive and endocrine disruptive effect of TBT in two species of gastropods of genus Thais. In this experiment normal specimens of T. bufo and T. rudolphi were exposed to three different concentrations (100, 500 and 1000ngl-1) of TBTCl for four weeks in laboratory and at the end of experiment level of free testosterone and TBT body burden was estimated by radioimmunoassay and gas chromatograph coupled with a flame photometric detector respectively. In both tested species exposed to 500 and 1000ngl-1 of TBT imposex stages developed, while in 100ng l-1 and control groups showed no imposex condition. Elevation of free testosterone level in imposex females has also been observed. These observations indicate that the TBT act as potential imposex inducer and endocrine disruptor in the targeted gastropod species and these species can be used as sensitive biomonitoring tool for TBT contamination.

RESUMO

The concentrations and spatial distribution of 14 organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) and plasticizers were studied in aquatic environments of China, namely, the Pearl River Delta (PRD), South China Sea (SCS) and Yellow River Estuary (YRE), as well as Tokyo Bay (TB) in Japan. These locations were characterized by different levels of socioeconomic development and human activities. The spatial pattern of OPFRs revealed their ubiquity along the coasts of China and Japan; the concentrations ranged from 15 to 1790, 1 to 147, 253 to 1720, and 107 to 284 ng L-1 in the PRD, SCS, YRE and TB, respectively. The most frequently detected OPFR was triethyl phosphate (TEP), followed by triphenylphosphine oxide (TPPO) and tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP). A positive relationship (R2 = 0.668, p = 0.004) was observed between OPFR contamination and socioeconomic activity, measured by gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, for the studied cities in China and Japan. The results suggest that an increase in manufacturing and construction activities in the studied areas may aggravate coastal contamination with OPFRs. The potential threat to aquatic organisms from exposure to TCEP, a suspected carcinogen, was revealed by the hazard quotient (HQ) and probabilistic assessments. Further investigation of OPFR exposure in the aquatic environment of China is urgently required.

RESUMO

Estuarine systems play an important role in the transportation and transformation of organic pollutants from rivers. Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE), organochlorine pesticide (OCP), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations in water of the Jiulong River Estuary (JRE), China, were investigated to characterize their distribution, possible source, and potential ecological risk as well as the influencing factors. The total concentrations of PBDEs, OCPs, and PAHs varied from 5.2 to 12.3 pg L-1, from 29.1 to 96.4 ng L-1, and from 28.6 to 48.5 ng L-1, respectively. Their compositions were all consistent at different stations; even the input pathways were multifarious. A source analysis showed that PBDEs may come from the flame retardant usages of penta-BDE and deca-BDE; hexachlorocyclohexane isomers (HCHs) were from the use of technical HCHs, while DDTs were attributed to early residuals of industrial sources, and PAHs were mainly from pyrolytic sources. The spatial distributions of PBDEs and OCPs were quite similar with their concentrations, decreasing along the estuary and then increasing when passing the Xiamen Harbor. PAH concentrations were similar along the whole estuary, suggesting that local sources and hydrological conditions might be the influencing factors. The concentrations of these pollutants changed with tidal conditions and were positively correlated with SPM, DOC, and chlorophyll a but negatively correlated with salinity. The ecological risk assessment revealed that OCPs and PAHs posed slightly higher potential risks to aquatic organism in the study area.

RESUMO

Historical records of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were analyzed in two dated sediment cores (DH05 and DH11) collected from the continental shelf of the East China Sea (ECS) to investigate the influence of anthropogenic activities on marine sediment over the past century. The concentrations and fluxes of 15 PAHs were in the range of 28.6-96.5 ng g-1 and 7.6-35.2 ng cm-2 yr-1 in DH05 (1920s-2009), 18.8-76.4 ng g-1 and 13.9-30.9 ng cm-2 yr-1 in DH11 (1860s-2009). The sedimentary records of PAHs in the two cores generally reflected the economic development and energy consumption change in China. Identification of sources suggested that PAHs in ECS were predominantly from petrogenic origin and various combustion sources. A change of source from low- and moderate-temperature combustion to high-temperature combustion process was observed. Although a production ban of technical HCH and DDT was imposed in China in 1983, their sedimentary fluxes display increasing trends or strong rebounds from 1980s to 1990s as recorded in the core profiles. High proportions of DDD + DDE and γ-HCH suggested those OCPs mainly derived from early residuals. Temporal trends of PCBs presented relative high levels from 1970s to 1980s and high proportions of PCB congeners with 3-6 chlorines atoms indicated industrial sources.

RESUMO

Concentrations of 23 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), including new classes of PFASs, in seawater samples were investigated for their occurrence and the interaction of the ocean currents with the distribution of PFASs in the South China Sea. This study revealed that socio-economic development was associated with the PFAS contamination in coastal regions of South China. Significant correlations between concentration of total PFASs with gross domestic product (GDP) per capita and population density were found in the areas, suggesting that the influence of intense human activities in these areas may have resulted in higher PFAS contamination to the adjacent environment. Di-substituted polyfluoroalkyl phosphate (diPAP), one of the potential replacements for PFASs, was only detected in the heavily developed region, namely Pearl River Delta (PRD). Total PFAS concentrations, ranging from 195 to 4925 pg/L, were detected at 51 sampling stations of the South China Sea. The results also confirmed that PFAS contamination in the South China Sea is strongly affected by the ocean currents. In comparison to perfluoroactane sulfonate (PFOS) concentrations measured nine years ago at the same locations, the concentrations in this study were found to be two times higher. This indicated that the use and production of perfluoroalkyl sulfonates (PFSAs) has been continuing in the region.

RESUMO

Samples of surface sediment and shellfish were collected from Minjiang Estuary-Mazu and Xiamen-Jinmen sea areas and were analyzed for hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), dichlorodiphenyl-trichlorophenyl (DDT) and its degraded derivatives dichloro-diphenyl-dichloroethane (DDT) and dichloro-dichlorophenyl-ethylene (DDE), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) by gas chromatography. Concentration ranges of HCHs, DDTs, and PCBs in the sediments were 0.03-0.48, 1.10-14.3, and ND to 0.76 ng/g dw, respectively; those for shellfish samples were ND to 1.5, 21.5-892, dw and ND-3.7 ng/g dw, respectively. The results showed that the concentrations of such oganochlorine compounds (OCs) in the sediments were usually low as compared with other sea areas and estuaries, and the organochlorines were accumulated in marine bivalve mollusks, particularly in oyster. With respect to the concentrations of HCHs, DDTs, and PCBs in the samples of either sediment or shellfish, DDTs were higher than HCHs and PCBs. The concentrations of OCs in shellfish samples varied with the sampling locations and organism species but were generally higher than those in the sediments. The concentration distributions, compositions, and residue levels of these OCs are extensively discussed and evaluated.
