Land-use changes are an important factor affecting the change in carbon storage in terrestrial ecosystems. Exploring the relationship between land-use changes and carbon storage provides reliable data support for optimizing regional land-use structure and maintaining regional carbon balance. Taking Jiangxi Province as an example, we first analyzed the land-use changes; then simulated the land-use pattern under three scenarios (i.e., natural development, ecological priority, and economic development scenarios) in 2030 based on the PLUS model; and finally estimated the carbon storage change in the past (i.e., 1990-2020) and future periods (i.e., three scenarios in 2030) using the InVEST model, analyzed the spatial-temporal characteristics, and proposed the corresponding suggestions. The results showed:① The carbon storage in Jiangxi Province showed a downward trend from 1990 to 2020, with a total reduction of 4.58×107 t. The increase in the water bodies and construction land and the decrease in cultivated land, woodland, grassland, and unused land was the major cause. ② The carbon storage under natural development, ecological priority, and economic development scenarios in Jiangxi Province in 2030 were 2.20×109, 2.24×109 and 2.19×109 t, respectively. ③ The carbon storage under the three scenarios showed similar spatial characteristics, wherein the high carbon storage was distributed in northern, northwest, and western regions, and the low carbon storage was distributed near the central region. These results can provide data support for future land spatial planning and improving the carbon storage of terrestrial ecosystems in Jiangxi Province.

BACKGROUND: Understanding affect as a determinant of physical activity has gained increased attention in health behavior research. Fluctuations in affect intensity from moment-to-moment (i.e., affective variability) may interfere with cognitive and regulatory processes, making it difficult to engage in goal-directed behaviors such as physical activity. Preliminary evidence indicates that those with greater trait-level affective variability engage in lower levels of habitual physical activity. However, the extent to which daily fluctuations in affect variability are associated with same-day physical activity levels is unknown. This study used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to investigate day-level associations between affective variability (i.e., within-subject variance) and physical activity. METHODS: Young adults (N = 231, M = 23.58 ± 3.02 years) provided three months of smartphone-based EMA and smartwatch-based activity data. Every two weeks, participants completed a 4-day EMA measurement burst (M = 5.17 ± 1.28 bursts per participant). Bursts consisted of hourly randomly-prompted EMA surveys assessing momentary positive-activated (happy, energetic), positive-deactivated (relaxed), negative-activated (tense, stressed), and negative-deactivated (sad, fatigued) affect. Participants continuously wore a smartwatch to measure physical activity across the three months. Mixed-effects location scale modeling examined the day-level associations of affective variability (i.e., positive-activated, positive-deactivated, negative-activated, and negative-deactivated) and physical activity, controlling for covariates such as mean levels of affect, between-subject effects of physical activity, time of day, day of week, day in study, and smartwatch wear time. RESULTS: There were 41,546 completed EMA surveys (M = 182.22 ± 69.82 per participant) included in the analyses. Above and beyond mean levels of affect, greater day-level variability in positive-activated affect was associated with greater physical activity on that same day compared to other days (τ = 0.01, p < .001), whereas greater day-level variability in negative-deactivated affect was associated with less physical activity on that same day compared to other days (τ = -0.01, p < .001). Day-level variability in positive-deactivated affect or negative-activated affect were not associated with day-level physical activity (ps > .05) CONCLUSIONS: Individuals were less active on days with greater variability in feeling sad and fatigued but more active on days with greater variability in feeling happy and energetic. Understanding the dynamic relationships of affective variability with day-level physical activity can strengthen physical activity interventions by considering how these processes differ within individuals and unfold within the context of daily life. Future research should examine causal pathways between affective variability and physical activity across the day.

Purpose: To quantify and evaluate trends of work outcomes and medical costs among Singaporean adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the National Cancer Centre Singapore between July 2016 and October 2018. Cancer patients who were diagnosed between the age of 15 and 39 years and had completed treatment were eligible. Siblings of cancer patients were recruited as controls. Work outcomes were collected using an investigator-designed questionnaire, while cost data were extracted from the hospital database. Descriptive statistics were used to quantify work and cost outcomes. Mixed-effects logistic regression was used to compare employment rates between survivors and controls. Generalized linear models were used to characterize trends between medical costs and symptom burden. Results: A total of 29 cancer survivors and 23 sibling controls were analyzed. Approximately 80% of survivors and controls were employed at the time of survey; however, more than half of the employed survivors reported impaired work outcomes due to effects from cancer and cancer treatment, including work reallocation, absenteeism, and decreased work ability. Median productivity loss due to absenteeism in the past 3 months was estimated to be U.S. dollar (USD) 110. Total medical cost incurred within the first year after treatment completion remained high at a median of USD6592, with out-of-pocket expenditure between 17.2% and 100.0%. Conclusion: Despite their young age and having completed cancer treatment, Singaporean AYA cancer survivors may continue to experience poor work outcomes even after resuming work. High medical costs may also persist.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of six weeks of routine use of a novel robotic transfer device, the AgileLife Patient Transfer System, on mobility-related health outcomes, task demand, and satisfaction relative to previous transfer methods. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six end users and five caregivers used the system in their homes for six weeks. Participants completed several surveys examining perceived demands related to preparing and performing a transfer and mobility-related health outcomes pre and post intervention. Participants were also asked about their satisfaction with using the technology compared to previous transfer methods. RESULTS: Both end users and caregivers reported reduction in perceived physical demand (p = 0.007) and work (p ≤ 0.038) when preparing for and performing a transfer. End users indicated that the device intervention had a positive impact, indicating some improvements to health-related quality of life as well as improved competence, adaptability, and self-esteem post-intervention. All participants were highly likely to recommend the technology to others. CONCLUSION: The AgileLife Patient Transfer System is a promising new form of transfer technology that may improve the mobility and mobility-related health of individuals with disabilities and their caregivers in home settings.Implications for rehabilitationRobotic transfer assistance reduced physical demand and work among end users and caregivers.The robotic device had a positive impact on some quality of life outcomes after 6 weeks of use.Users were highly likely to recommend the robotic transfer device to others.

The seasonal variation and spatial distribution of pharmaceuticals in typical drinking water sources in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River were analyzed using the solid-phase extraction and high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry methods. Combined with the risk entropy method, the corresponding ecological risks for aquatic organisms were evaluated. The results showed that 80% of the target pharmaceuticals were detected in the drinking water sources, with average concentrations of 0.07-13.00 ng·L-1. The concentrations of the target pharmaceuticals were lower than or comparable with those in other drinking water sources reported in China. The spatiotemporal distribution of different pharmaceuticals varied. Generally, the detection level in winter was higher than that in summer, and there was no significant difference between that upstream and that downstream. This might be mainly attributed to seasonal/regional use and emissions of the pharmaceuticals, the impact of flow rate on dilution, and the impact of temperature on biodegradation. Compared with those before the COVID-19 epidemic, the detection concentrations of the target pharmaceuticals were relatively low. The reason for this might be that the prevention and control of the epidemic reduced the use and emission of the pharmaceuticals to a certain extent, and the high rainfall and runoff strengthened the dilution of water flow. The target pharmaceuticals, especially antibiotics, posed medium or low risks to aquatic organisms (especially algae). Considering the ecological risks and genotoxicity of pharmaceuticals and the potential risks of antibiotic-resistant genes, it is suggested to strengthen the investigation, evaluation, treatment, and control of pharmaceuticals in the water environment.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the association between children's daily negative affect (NA) trajectories and unhealthy food consumption during weekends using ecological momentary assessment (EMA). DESIGN: Children answered mobile phone-based EMA surveys 7 times a day for 2 weekend days per wave, with each survey assessing current NA and past 2-hour consumption of fried foods (chips or fries), sweets (pastries or sweets), and sugary beverages (drank soda or energy drinks). SETTING: Los Angeles, California. PARTICIPANTS: The sample consisted of 195 children (51% female; mean age, 9.65 years; SD, 0.93) from the Mothers and Their Children's Health cohort study. MAIN OUTCOMES MEASURES: Negative affect trajectory (independent variable), unhealthy food consumption (dependent variable). ANALYSIS: Latent growth mixture modeling classified NA trajectories across days and examined their association with unhealthy food consumption. RESULTS: The latent growth mixture modeling identified 3 classes of daily NA trajectories: (1) stable low, (2) early increasing and late decreasing and (3) early decreasing and late increasing. Fried food consumption was higher on early increasing and late decreasing and early decreasing and late increasing NA trajectories than days with stable low NA. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: By better understanding day-to-day variability in children's affect and eating, we can individually tailor obesity interventions to account for the emotional contexts in which unhealthy eating occurs.

The ocean resources have been rapidly depleted in the recent decade, and the complementary role of aquaculture to food security has become more critical than ever before. Water quality is one of the key factors in determining the success of aquaculture and real-time water quality monitoring is an important process for aquaculture. This paper proposes a low-cost and easy-to-build artificial intelligence (AI) buoy system that autonomously measures the related water quality data and instantly forwards them via wireless channels to the shore server. Furthermore, the data provide aquaculture staff with real-time water quality information and also assists server-side AI programs in implementing machine learning techniques to further provide short-term water quality predictions. In particular, we aim to provide a low-cost design by combining simple electronic devices and server-side AI programs for the proposed buoy system to measure water velocity. As a result, the cost for the practical implementation is approximately USD 2015 only to facilitate the proposed AI buoy system to measure the real-time data of dissolved oxygen, salinity, water temperature, and velocity. In addition, the AI buoy system also offers short-term estimations of water temperature and velocity, with mean square errors of 0.021 °C and 0.92 cm/s, respectively. Furthermore, we replaced the use of expensive current meters with a flow sensor tube of only USD 100 to measure water velocity.

The occurrence of ten target pharmaceuticals was investigated in drinking water sources and tap water in a city in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, including erythromycin (ERY), roxithromycin (RTM), ciprofloxacin (CPX), ofloxacin (OFX), sulfadiazine (SDZ), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), oxytetracycline (OTC), tetracycline (TC), ibuprofen (IBF), and naproxen (NPX). BACKGROUND: Using proper transfer technique can help to reduce forces and prevent secondary injuries. However, current assessment tools rely on the ability to subjectively identify harmful movement patterns. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the study was to determine the accuracy of using a low-cost markerless motion capture camera and machine learning methods to evaluate the quality of independent wheelchair sitting pivot transfers. We hypothesized that the algorithms would be able to discern proper (low risk) and improper (high risk) wheelchair transfer techniques in accordance with component items on the Transfer Assessment Instrument (TAI). METHODS: Transfer motions of 91 full-time wheelchair users were recorded and used to develop machine learning classifiers that could be used to discern proper from improper technique. The data were labeled using the TAI item scores. Eleven out of 18 TAI items were evaluated by the classifiers. Motion variables from the Kinect were inputted as the features. Random forests and k-nearest neighbors algorithms were chosen as the classifiers. Eighty percent of the data were used for model training and hyperparameter turning. The validation process was performed using 20% of the data as the test set. RESULTS: The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of the test set for each item was over 0.79. After adjusting the decision threshold, the precisions of the models were over 0.87, and the model accuracies were over 71%. CONCLUSION: The results show promise for the objective assessment of the transfer technique using a low cost camera and machine learning classifiers.

The consumption of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) for controlling and preventing the COVID-19 would have sharply increased during the pandemic. To evaluate their post-pandemic environmental impacts, five categories of drugs were detected in lakes and WWTP-river-estuary system near hospitals of Jinyintan, Huoshenshan and Leishenshan in the three regions (J, H and L) (Regions J, H and L) in Wuhan, China. The total amount of PPCPs (ranging from 2.61 to 1122 ng/L in water and 0.11 to 164 ng/g dry weight in sediments) were comparable to historical reports in Yangtze River basin, whereas the detection frequency and concentrations of ribavirin and azithromycin were higher than those of historical studies. The distribution of concerned drugs varied with space, season, media and water types: sampling sites located at WWTPs-river-estuary system around two hospitals (Regions L and J) usually had relatively high waterborne contamination levels, most of which declined in autumn; lakes had relatively low waterborne contamination levels in summer but increased in autumn. The potential risks of detected PPCPs were further evaluated using the multiple-level ecological risk assessment (MLERA): sulfamethoxazole and azithromycin were found to pose potential risks to aquatic organisms according to a semi-probabilistic approach and classified as priority pollutants based on an optimized risk assessment. In general, the COVID-19 pandemic did not cause serious pollution in lakes and WWTPs-river-estuary system in Wuhan City. However, the increased occurrence of certain drugs and their potential ecological risks need further attention. A strict source control policy and an advanced monitoring and risk warning system for emergency response and long-term risk control of PPCPs is urgent.

RESUMO

During this unprecedented novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, there is an urgent need for empirical data to characterise its impact on the mental health and well-being of Australians. In this viewpoint, we outline a number of considerations for research on this topic, highlighting areas necessitating special attention, consideration of particular vulnerable groups and the need for longitudinal studies to track mental health fluctuations in the general population. We conclude by introducing the COLLATE (COvid-19 and you: mentaL heaLth in AusTralia now survEy) project, outlining its aims, addressing some considerations raised herein and detailing avenues for future research. Since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) on 30 January 2020 (WHO, 2020), the COVID-19 pandemic has caused major upheaval both in Australia and globally. While the search for a vaccine continues, current efforts towards tackling the virus and limiting contagion in several nations have focused on social distancing and the shutdown of non-essential services. In Australia, the first case was reported on 13 January 2020 (COVID-19 National Incident Room Surveillance Team, 2020), the first death occurred on 24 February and a spate of progressive restrictions were enforced throughout the 2 weeks leading up to 31 March 2020 (COVID-19 National Incident Room Surveillance Team, 2020a).

PURPOSE: Work-related issues among Asian adolescent and young-adult (AYA) cancer survivors are poorly described in the literature. There has also been a paucity of reports regarding insurance-related concerns in this patient population. Focus groups were therefore carried out in Singapore to understand survivorship issues related to work and insurance coverage among Asian AYA cancer survivors. METHODS: Twenty-three AYA survivors and 18 healthcare professionals (HCPs) who care for AYA cancer patients were recruited for 11 focus group sessions. Thematic content analysis was carried out to identify major themes that emerged. RESULTS: Similar themes emerged from AYA and HCP focus groups. The majority of AYA survivors were eager to return to work post-treatment. However, some survivors were worried about not keeping up with expectations and struggled with disclosure of their medical history. In contrast, several survivors leveraged on their experience with cancer to bolster job opportunities. Despite facing challenges due to complications from cancer and restrictions at work, AYA survivors preferred to be treated normally. AYA survivors also expressed concerns about inadequate insurance coverage and a lack of information on this topic. CONCLUSION: Contrary to expectations, Asian AYA survivors are motivated to return to work and address work-related challenges. Inadequate insurance coverage remains a pressing concern despite the availability of public health insurance and subsidies. Career coaches and financial counselors should be incorporated into survivorship care to aid AYA survivors.

Background: Previous studies have conflicting results on the association between socioeconomic status and stroke outcomes. Thus, this study aimed to investigate whether socioeconomic status is associated with the prognosis of ischemic stroke in Guangzhou, South China. Methods: A total of 622 patients with ischemic stroke who were admitted in the neurology department of five general hospitals in Guangzhou from May 2014 to October 2014 were included in the study. Socioeconomic status was measured based on education, income, caregiver, and insurance. The modified Rankin scale was used to evaluate the two years prognosis of patients with stroke. A multivariate logistic regression model was performed to determine the association between socioeconomic status and ischemic stroke prognosis. Results: In 2 years follow-up, 542 ischemic stroke patients were interviewed by telephone. Age ranged from 31 to 96 years, 65.5% of the patients were male. 33.9% of patients with ischemic stroke had a poor prognosis. After adjustment for age, sex, cardiovascular disease, behavior lifestyle, and severity of stroke, odds ratio for poor prognosis in patients with low income was 1.84 (95%CI 1.05-3.22), family caregiver 3.19 (95%CI 1.05-9.70), and no insurance 1.68 (95%CI 1.02-2.77). Conclusions: Patients with low income, family caregiver, and no insurance have a poorer prognosis after ischemic stroke that can be partly explained by intermediate variable in the patients' demographic characteristics, cardiovascular disease, behavior lifestyle, and stroke severity. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical manifestations pathologic features, treatment options and prognosis of patients with bone lymphoma. METHODS: The clinical characteristics, pathologic features, treatment and prognosis of 34 BL patients diagnosed by histopathologic method or/and PET-CT and treated in first hospital of peking university from January 2004 to April 2018 were analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS: The median age of 34 BL patients was 56 years old, the male and female ratio was 1.43∶1 (24 /10). Among 34 patients, the patients with primary bone lymphoma(PBL) were 8 cases, the patients with secondary bone lymphoma(SBL) was 26 cases, the PBL and SBL ratio was 0.31∶1. Bone lymphoma lacks typical systemic symptoms, and its onset began mostly from bone pain and pathologic bone fracture. The most frequent pathological type of bone lymphoma in our study was diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), accounting for 55.88%. At present, the conventional treatment for bone lymphoma includes chemotherapy, or chemotherapy combined with radiotherapy and surgery, as well as hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The average and median OS time of BL patients were 349 years and 3 years respectively, meanwhile the OS rate for three years and two years were 56.25% and 78.16%, respectively. Factors that affect survival of BL patients were PBL and SBL classification, pathological type, blood LDH level, and treatment methods. CONCLUSION: Bone lymphoma is usually concealed onset,an adequate and adequate combination therapy can improve the survival rate and transplantation therapy plays an important role. Primary bone lymphoma is rare, the prognosis of patients with primary bone lymphoma is good, whereas the prognosis of patients with secondary bone lymphoma is poor.

Background: The integration of telehealthcare technologies into geriatric care has clear advantages, but poses challenges for key stakeholders, including the telehealthcare service industry, smart device developers, marketers and, of course, users. The purpose of this study was to gain insight into user experience and acceptance of telehealthcare technology in Taiwan. Materials and Methods: Taking an integrated mixed-methods approach, 51 participants-33 women (64.71%) and 18 men (35.29%) (mean age: 52.1 years)-were examined before, during, and after using a telehealthcare device. A questionnaire was used to assess users' acceptance of the technology. Interviews were conducted to gather feedback. Results: The quantitative analysis revealed that (1) effort expectancy and relatives significantly influenced users' behavior intentions, (2) error and memorability significantly affected users' satisfaction, and (3) intention and satisfaction significantly affected users' behavior. The qualitative analysis revealed two key implications. First, participants generally were not satisfied with the telehealthcare device. Second, participants suggested the redesign of the telehealthcare device to reduce operating errors and time consumption to meet users' needs. Conclusions: Contemporary telehealthcare devices do not meet users' needs. Participants were made to adapt to the equipment rather than the equipment tailored to meet their needs. Although there were key benefits from home telehealthcare, the systems require enhanced technology, improved usability, and an expanded scale of services backed by government before widespread implementation can successfully proceed.

PURPOSE: Since few studies have investigated whether the Distress Thermometer (DT) in Asian adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer patients (between 15 and 39 years), we investigated the appropriateness of the DT as a screening tool for psychological symptom burden in these AYA patients and to evaluate AYA patients' distress across a trajectory of three time points longitudinally over a 6-month period. METHODS: This was a prospective, longitudinal study. Recruited Asian AYA patients were diagnosed with lymphomas, sarcomas, primary brain malignancies, or germ cell tumors. Patients completed the DT, PedsQL Generic Core Scales, and the Rotterdam Symptom Checklist. Data were analyzed using STATA version 15. RESULTS: Approximately half of the patients experienced clinically significant DT distress (distress score ≥ 4) early in their cancer journey with 43.1% patients presenting with distress at time of diagnosis and 47.7% patients 1 month after diagnosis. Among AYA patients > 24 years old, worry (68.3%), insurance/financial issues (61%), treatment decisions (43.9%), work/school issues (41.5%), nervousness (41.5%), and sadness (41.5%) were the top five identified problems. On the other hand, the top five identified problems among AYA ≤ 24 years were worry (54.2%), nervousness (41.7%), bathing/dressing problems (37.5%), work/school issues (33.3%), and fatigue (33.3%). DT scores were significantly associated with certain psychological symptom burden items such as worry (p < 0.001), depressed mood (p = 0.020), and nervousness (p = 0.015). CONCLUSION: The DT is a useful screening tool for psychological distress in AYA cancer patients with clinically significant distress being identified in the early phases of the cancer journey.

The occurrence and health risks of organotins (OTs) in the waterworks and source water in the Three Gorges Reservoir Region (TGRR), China were assessed in this study. Water samples were collected at four waterworks (A, B, C, and D) in March and July 2012 to analyze butyltins (BTs) and phenyltins (PTs) using a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) system. Our results showed that both the waterworks and their nearby water sources were polluted by OTs, with PTs being the most dominant species. Monobutyltin (MBT), monophenyltin (MPT), diphenyltin (DPT), and triphenyltin (TPT) were detected in most of the analyzed water samples. The highest concentrations of OTs in influents, effluents, and source water in March were 52.81, 17.93, and 55.32 ng Sn L-1, respectively. Furthermore, significant seasonal changes in OTs pollution were observed in all samples, showing pollution worse in spring compared with summer. The removal of OTs by the conventional treatment processes was not stable among the waterworks. The removal efficiency of OTs in July reached 100% at plant B, while that at plant C was only 38.8%. The source water and influents shared similar composition profiles, concentrations, and seasonal change of OTs, which indicated that OTs in the waterworks were derived from the source water. A health risk assessment indicated that the presence of OTs in the waterworks would not pose a significant health risk to the population, yet their presence should not be ignored.

BACKGROUND: Measures of mental well-being and positive mental health (PMH) have been largely developed and used in Western populations, however, data on representative Asian communities are lacking. Using data from a population sample, this study sought to establish psychometric properties and norms of the PMH Instrument (PMH-I), a measure of positive mental health developed in Singapore. METHODS: We conducted a nationally representative survey among 1925 adults aged 18-79 years of Chinese, Malay, Indian or other ethnicity. Participants reported socio-demographic characteristics and completed the PMH-I along with measures of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and psychological distress. Construct validity of the PMH-I was assessed using confirmatory factor analysis and concurrent validity was tested through correlation with other psychological measures. Normative PMH values and differences in population subgroups were estimated. RESULTS: The six-factor-higher-order structure of the PMH-I comprising six subscales of general coping, emotional support, spirituality, interpersonal skills, personal growth and autonomy and global affect was confirmed. Concurrent validity was shown through significant positive correlation of the total PMH score and its subscales with HRQoL and an inverse correlation with psychological distress. Weighted age, gender and ethnicity-specific norms were derived for the Singapore population. Total PMH was significantly higher in participants aged over 40 years as compared with 18-29 year olds and in non-Chinese ethnic groups as compared with Chinese. These differences were observed for all PMH-I subscales, with the exception of emotional support and interpersonal skills score differences by age. In contrast, gender, marital status, and education level were significantly associated with some of the subscales, but not with total PMH. CONCLUSIONS: These results support the psychometric properties of the PMH-I in a multi-ethnic Asian population sample. The generalizable population-based norms support the application of the PMH-I for measuring mental health and assessing its determinants within the Singapore general population.

BACKGROUND: Computational network biology is an emerging interdisciplinary research area. Among many other network approaches, probabilistic graphical models provide a comprehensive probabilistic characterization of interaction patterns between molecules and the associated uncertainties. RESULTS: In this article, we first review graphical models, including directed, undirected, and reciprocal graphs (RG), with an emphasis on the RG models that are curiously under-utilized in biostatistics and bioinformatics literature. RG's strictly contain chain graphs as a special case and are suitable to model reciprocal causality such as feedback mechanism in molecular networks. We then extend the RG approach to modeling molecular networks by integrating DNA-, RNA- and protein-level data. We apply the extended RG method to The Cancer Genome Atlas multi-platform ovarian cancer data and reveal several interesting findings. CONCLUSIONS: This study aims to review the basics of different probabilistic graphical models as well as recent development in RG approaches for network modeling. The extension presented in this paper provides a principled and efficient way of integrating DNA copy number, DNA methylation, mRNA gene expression and protein expression.

BACKGROUND: We investigate the roles of residential racial segregation and income inequality for the black-white disparity in acquiring sexually transmitted diseases (STD) during pregnancy in a multilevel framework. METHODS: The analytic sample consisted of non-Hispanic white (n = 79,271) and non-Hispanic black (n = 17,669) mothers from 2012 population birth data from Pennsylvania. We used the 2009 to 2013 American Community Survey for neighborhood characteristics of mothers; we used multilevel models. RESULTS: First, neighborhood-level factors are important for understanding this disparity because racial segregation and income inequality are significantly associated with acquiring STD during pregnancy, regardless of race. Second, racial segregation moderates the relationships between race/ethnicity and the acquisition of STD during pregnancy. White mothers are more vulnerable to neighborhood segregation than black mothers, and black mothers are less likely to acquire STD during pregnancy than white mothers if they reside with co-ethnics. Third, mothers residing in the most socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods-as indicated by both absolute and relative measures of income inequality-have the highest odds of acquiring STD during pregnancy, regardless of race. CONCLUSIONS: Neighborhood-level segregation and income inequality are important for understanding the acquisition of STDs during pregnancy. Our findings have important implications for future research and for place-specific prevention and intervention to reduce the racial disparity in STD during pregnancy.
