RESUMO

Smart contact lenses (SCLs) have been considered as novel wearable devices for out-of-hospital and self-monitoring applications. They are capable of non-invasively and continuously monitoring physiological signals in the eyes, including vital biophysical (e.g., intraocular of pressure, temperature, and electrophysiological signal) and biochemical signals (e.g., pH, glucose, protein, nitrite, lactic acid, and ions). Recent progress mainly focuses on the rational design of wearable SCLs for physiological signal monitoring, while also facilitating the treatment of various ocular diseases. It covers contact lens materials, fabrication technologies, and integration methods. We also highlight and discuss a critical comparison of SCLs with electrical, microfluidic, and optical signal outputs in health monitoring. Their advantages and disadvantages could help researchers to make decisions when developing SCLs with desired properties for physiological signal monitoring. These unique capabilities make SCLs promising diagnostic and therapeutic tools. Despite the extensive research in SCLs, new technologies are still in their early stages of development and there are a few challenges to be addressed before these SCLs technologies can be successfully commercialized particularly in the form of rigorous clinical trials.

Environmental issues have gained the attention of regulators and researchers worldwide. This present study empirically examines the validation of the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) in the selected ASEAN economies for the period 1995-2018 in the presence of eco-innovations and tourism. This study assesses the short-run and long-run relationship between carbon dioxide emission, tourism, eco-innovations, and economic growth in ASEAN countries. To fulfil the objectives of the study, Westerlund and Edgerton (Oxf Bull Econ Stat 70:665-704, 2008) and Banerjee and Carrion-i-Silvestre (J Time Ser Anal 38:610-636, 2017) co-integration analysis have been applied to estimate the co-integration among variables because cross-sectional dependence (CSD) and slope heterogeneity was present. The short-run and the long-run empirical estimation have been done through cross-sectional auto distributive lag model. The findings provide evidence that an inverted U-shape nexus exists between carbon (CO2) emissions and economic growth in the ASEAN countries, a validation of EKC. Eco-innovations and tourism are found to be the factors that mitigate CO2 emissions. AMG and CCEMG results also confirm the robustness of short-run and long-run results. The findings of the study suggest that governments in ASEAN countries should promote tourism and eco-innovations (i.e., research and development) to mitigate CO2 emission, which poses serious threats to environmental sustainability. Also, tourism and eco-innovations are the drivers of economic growth, and growth reconciles with environmental sustainability in the selected ASEAN countries. This study provides guidelines to the policymakers while formulating the regulations related to environmental degradation.

This paper examined the impact of green finance and financial technology on economic growth by utilizing statistics between 1990 to 2000 gathered from 50 US states and regions. A two-step generalized GMM was used to analyze the link between green finance, financial technology, and continued economic growth using panel regression analysis. We found that the US green finance sector had grown significantly and such growth was accompanied by an increase in the usage of non-combustible energy and an advancement in the green finance economic forum. This research concludes that green financing has a beneficial impact on all three components of continued financial development. There is a favorable influence of financial technology on green finance in environmental and economic dimensions, although the link between green banking and investment performance is only somewhat affected by technology. When total emissions increased, non-oil energy usage did not grow and initiatives for renewable energy initiatives were lacking. As a result, there was a decline in the growth of green finance. Green funding and total emissions had a significant impact on the US non-combustible energy usage as did explicit policy changes. The recommendation is also canvassed to strengthen the adoption of green financing policies, increase the use of non-combustible energy, and build an alternative energy economy. It also offers three policy recommendations for policymakers, namely, to improve the integration of banking technology with green finance, develop a corporate environmental approach to manage and control state authorities in increasing green finance productivity, and generate medium- and long-term favorable steps to support green finance in the financial market.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate articular cartilage degeneration using quantitative three-dimensional ultrashort-echo-time cones adiabatic-T1ρ (3D UTE-Cones-AdiabT1ρ) imaging. METHODS: Sixty-six human subjects were recruited for this study. Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grade and Whole-Organ Magnetic-Resonance-Imaging Score (WORMS) were evaluated by two musculoskeletal radiologists. The human subjects were categorized into three groups, namely normal controls (KL0), doubtful-minimal osteoarthritis (OA) (KL1-2), and moderate-severe OA (KL3-4). WORMS were regrouped to encompass the extent of lesions and the depth of lesions. The UTE-Cones-AdiabT1ρ values were obtained using 3D UTE-Cones data acquisitions preceded by seven paired adiabatic full passage pulses that corresponded to seven spin-locking times (TSLs) of 0, 12, 24, 36, 48, 72, and 96 ms. The performance of the UTE-Cones-AdiabT1ρ technique in evaluating the degeneration of knee cartilage was assessed via the ANOVA comparisons with subregional analysis and Spearman's correlation coefficient as well as the receiver-operating-characteristic (ROC) curve. RESULTS: UTE-Cones-AdiabT1ρ showed significant positive correlations with KL grade (r = 0.15, p < 0.05) and WORMS (r = 0.57, p < 0.05). Higher UTE-Cones-AdiabT1ρ values were observed in both larger and deeper lesions in the cartilage. The differences in UTE-Cones-AdiabT1ρ values among different extent and depth groups of cartilage lesions were all statistically significant (p < 0.05). Subregional analyses showed that the correlations between UTE-Cones-AdiabT1ρ and WORMS varied with the location of cartilage. The AUC value of UTE-Cones-AdiabT1ρ for mild cartilage degeneration (WORMS=1) was 0.8. The diagnostic threshold value of UTE-Cones-AdiabT1ρ for mild cartilage degeneration was 39.4 ms with 80.8% sensitivity. CONCLUSIONS: The 3D UTE-Cones-AdiabT1ρ sequence can be useful in quantitative evaluation of articular cartilage degeneration. KEY POINTS: • The 3D UTE-Cones-AdiabT1ρ sequence can distinguish mild cartilage degeneration from normal cartilage with a diagnostic threshold value of 39.4 ms for mild cartilage degeneration with 80.8% sensitivity. • Higher UTE-Cones-AdiabT1ρ values were observed in both larger and deeper lesions in the articular cartilage. • UTE-Cones-AdiabT1ρ is a promising biomarker for quantitative evaluation of early cartilage degeneration.

RESUMO

Advances in wearable epidermal sensors have revolutionized the way that physiological signals are captured and measured for health monitoring. One major challenge is to convert physiological signals to easily readable signals in a convenient way. One possibility for wearable epidermal sensors is based on visible readouts. There are a range of materials whose optical properties can be tuned by parameters such as temperature, pH, light, and electric fields. Herein, this review covers and highlights a set of materials with tunable optical properties and their integration into wearable epidermal sensors for health monitoring. Specifically, the recent progress, fabrication, and applications of these materials for wearable epidermal sensors are summarized and discussed. Finally, the challenges and perspectives for the next generation wearable devices are proposed.

BACKGROUND: T1ρ has been extensively reported as a sensitive biomarker of biochemical changes in the nucleus pulposus (NP) and annulus fibrosis of intervertebral discs (IVDs). However, no T1ρ study of cartilaginous endplates (CEPs) has yet been reported because the relatively long echo times (TEs) of conventional clinical T1ρ sequences cannot effectively capture the fast-decaying magnetic resonance signals of CEPs, which have very short T2/T2*s. This can be overcome by using ultrashort echo time (UTE) T1ρ acquisitions. METHODS: Seventeen subjects underwent UTE with adiabatic T1ρ preparation (UTE-Adiab-T1ρ) and T2-weighted fast spin echo imaging of their lumbar spines. Each IVD was manually segmented into seven regions (i.e., outer anterior annulus fibrosis, inner anterior annulus fibrosis, outer posterior annulus fibrosis, inner posterior annulus fibrosis, superior CEP, inferior CEP, and NP). T1ρ values of these sub-regions were correlated with IVD modified Pfirrmann grades and subjects' ages. In addition, T1ρ values were compared in subjects with and without low back pain (LBP). RESULTS: Correlations of T1ρ values of the outer posterior annulus fibrosis, superior CEP, inferior CEP, and NP with modified Pfirrmann grades were significant (P<0.05) with R values of 0.51, 0.36, 0.38, and -0.94, respectively. Correlations of T1ρ values of the outer anterior annulus fibrosis, outer posterior annulus fibrosis, and NP with ages were significant with R equal to 0.52, 0.71, and -0.76, respectively. T1ρ differences of the outer posterior annulus fibrosis, inferior CEP, and NP between the subjects with and without LBP were significant (P=0.005, 0.020, and 0.000, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The UTE-Adiab-T1ρ sequence can quantify T1ρ of whole IVDs including CEPs. This is an advance, and of value for comprehensive assessment of IVD degeneration.

Conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is not capable of detecting signal from the deep cartilage due to its short transverse relaxation time (T2). Moreover, several quantitative MRI techniques are significantly influenced by the magic angle effect. The combinations of ultrashort echo time (UTE) MRI with magnetization transfer (UTE-MT) and Adiabatic T1ρ (UTE-AdiabT1ρ) imaging allow magic angle-insensitive assessments of all regions of articular cartilage. The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlations between quantitative three-dimensional UTE MRI biomarkers and mechanical properties of human tibiofemoral cartilage specimens. In total, 40 human tibiofemoral cartilage specimens were harvested from three male and four female donors (64 ± 18 years old). Cartilage samples were scanned using a series of quantitative 3D UTE Cones T2* (UTE-T2*), T1 (UTE-T1), UTE-AdiabT1ρ, and UTE-MT sequences in a standard knee coil on a clinical 3T scanner. UTE-MT data were acquired with a series of MT powers and frequency offsets to calculate magnetization transfer ratio (MTR), as well as macromolecular fraction (MMF) and macromolecular T2 (T2mm) through modeling. Cartilage stiffness and Hayes elastic modulus were measured using indentation tests. Correlations of 3D UTE Cones MRI measurements in the superficial layer, deep layer, and global regions of interest (ROIs) with mechanical properties were investigated. Cartilage mechanical properties demonstrated highest correlations with UTE measures of the superficial layer of cartilage. AdiabT1ρ, MTR, and MMF in superficial layer ROIs showed significant correlations with Hayes elastic modulus (p < 0.05, R = -0.54, 0.49, and 0.66, respectively). These UTE measures in global ROIs showed significant, though slightly lower, correlations with Hayes elastic modulus (p < 0.05, R = -0.37, 0.52, and 0.60, respectively). Correlations between other UTE MRI measurements (T2*, T1, and T2mm) and mechanical properties were non-significant. The 3D UTE-AdiabT1ρ and UTE-MT sequences were highlighted as promising surrogates for non-invasive assessment of cartilage mechanical properties. MMF from UTE-MT modeling showed the highest correlations with cartilage mechanics.

BACKGROUND: Relatively weak correlations between patient symptoms and rotator cuff tendon (RCT) tearing have been reported; however, the relationship between symptoms and tendinosis has been less well-studied. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: To use quantitative MRI to assess the bilateral RCTs in shoulders of both patients with unilateral symptomatic tendinopathy and control subjects. We hypothesized that quantitative MRI measures would differ between symptomatic patients and controls. STUDY TYPE: Prospective imaging study. POPULATION/SUBJECTS: In all, 48 shoulders from 24 subjects (mean age, 32.8 years), including 14 patients with unilateral symptomatic tendinopathy and 10 asymptomatic controls. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: 3T/3D ultrashort echo time Cones sequence with magnetization transfer preparation (UTE-Cones-MT) and Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill. ASSESSMENT: Macromolecular fraction (MMF) and T2 relaxation were measured in four regions of the superior RCT, including all-segments, and lateral-third, bursal-sided, and articular-sided segments. The Western Ontario Rotator Cuff (WORC) index and visual analog scale were assessed. STATISTICAL TESTS: Three shoulder groups were evaluated, including symptomatic shoulders, contralateral asymptomatic shoulders in patients, and asymptomatic controls. MMF and T2 values were compared between groups using a bootstrap-based comparison of means. RESULTS: Significant differences were found in both MMF and T2 values between symptomatic and control RCTs when analyzing all-segments (P = 0.027 and P = 0.006, respectively) and articular-sided segments (both P = 0.001). Significant differences between asymptomatic RCTs in patients and control RCTs were also found, including MMF in all four anatomic regions analyzed (P = 0.024-0.044), as well as T2 in all-segments (P = 0.003), bursal-sided segments (P = 0.021), and articular-sided segments (P = 0.002). No significant differences in MMF (P = 0.420-0.950) or T2 (P = 0.380-0.910) were seen between ipsilateral symptomatic and contralateral asymptomatic RCTs in patients. DATA CONCLUSION: Symptomatic RCTs showed significantly lower MMF values and higher T2 values compared with control RCTs. In patients with unilateral symptomatic tendinopathy, the contralateral shoulder can demonstrate asymptomatic tendinopathy, which can be quantified using MMF or T2 . BACKGROUND To investigate the correlation between the relative computed tomography (CT) enhancement value and the microvascular architecture in different pathologic subtypes of renal cell carcinoma (RCC). MATERIAL AND METHODS This retrospective study included 55 patients with pathologically confirmed RCC. Immunohistochemistry for CD34 was performed for all surgical specimens. Microvascular architecture parameters (density, area, diameter, and perimeter) for the microvessels and the microvessels with lumen were determined. The CT scan was performed during arterial phase or venous phase. The correlation of parameters on CT and tumor angiogenesis was investigated. RESULTS Density of microvessels showed a positive correlation with CT values of tumors, ratios of tumor to cortex, and differences of tumor and medulla, but no correlation with CT value ratio of tumor to aorta or tumor to medulla. CT parameters were positively correlated with microvascular parameters. However, no CT parameter differences between hypo-vascular clear cell RCC and papillary RCC was observed. Strikingly, the density and area of the microvessels were significantly higher in hypo-vascular clear cell RCC than that in papillary RCC, while the density of the microvessels with lumen in the cyst-present RCC was significantly higher than that in the cyst-absent RCC. The values (especially those of microvessels with lumen) of area density, diameter, and perimeter were higher in the capsule-absent RCC than in the capsule-present RCC. CONCLUSIONS The relative CT enhancement value of RCC was associated with vascular architecture parameters including density, area, and perimeter. Quantitative and semi-quantitative parameters on enhanced CT may shed some light on tumor vasculature and function as indicators of the biological behavior of RCC.

The anti-cancerous activity of 6-gingerol extracted from Tongling White Ginger was investigated. 6-Gingerol inhibited the growth of HeLa cells with IC50 (96.32 µM) and IC80 (133.01 µM) and led to morphological changes, induced the cell cycle arrest in G0/G1-phase and ultimately resulted into apoptosis. Among cell cycle-related genes and proteins, the expression of cyclin (A, D1, E1) reduced, while of CDK-1, p21 and p27 showed slight decrease, except cyclin B1 and E1 (protein). Western blotting reported the induction of apoptosis with an increased Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, release of cytochrome c, cleavage of caspase-3, -8, -9 and PRPP in treated cells. 6-Gingerol activated AMPK, but inhibited PI3K/AKT phosphorylation with reduced P70S6K expression and also suppressed the mTOR phosphorylation. 6-Gingerol with 5-FU and Ptx resulted in 83.2% and 52% inhibition respectively, this synergy have stimulated apoptosis proteins more efficiently as compared to 6-Gingerol alone (10.75%) under in vitro conditions.

Numerous epidemiological studies have focused on the prevalence and related indicators of tooth wear. However, no sufficient studies have been conducted with Chinese adults. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of tooth wear and identify related indicators among adults aged 36 to 74 years in Wuhan City, P.R. China. A cross-sectional and analytic study was conducted with 720 participants, aged 35-49 yrs and 50-74 yrs, in 2014. Each age group included 360 participants, of which 50% were males and 50% were females. All participants completed a questionnaire before examination. Tooth wear was assessed using the modified Basic Erosive Wear Examination (BEWE) index. The data were analyzed using the chi-square test and binary logistic regression analysis. The prevalence of tooth wear was 67.5% and 100% in the 35-49 and 50-74 age groups, respectively. The prevalence of dentin exposure was 64.7% and 98.3%, respectively. A significantly higher prevalence of tooth wear and dentin exposure was found in the 50-74 yr group than in the 35-49 yr group (p < 0.05). Critical indicators of tooth wear and dentin exposure included high frequency of acidic drinks and foods consumption, low socio-economic status, and unilateral chewing. The frequency of changing toothbrushes and the habit of drinking water during meals were associated with tooth wear. In addition, the usage of hard-bristle toothbrushes and consuming vitamin C and aspirin were found to be linked with dentin exposure. In conclusion, the prevalence of tooth wear and dentin exposure observed in Chinese adults was high, and the results revealed an association between tooth wear and socio-behavioral risk indicators.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a simple method for assessment of RNA integrity in laser capture microdissection (LCM) samples. METHODS: The total RNA were isolated from the LCM samples and the sections before and after microdissection and examined by agarose gel electrophoresis. Real-time PCR was employed to assess the RNA from LCM samples, and the quantity of RNA was theoretically estimated according to the average total RNA product in mammalian cells (10 ng/1000 cells). RESULTS: When the total RNA from the sections before and after microdissection was intact, the RNA from LCM samples also had good quality, and the 28S and 18S rRNAs were visualized by ethidium bromide staining. Real-time PCR also showed good RNA quality in the LCM samples. CONCLUSION: A simple method for quantitative and qualitative assessment of the RNA from LCM samples is established, which can also be applied to assessment of DNA or proteins in LCM samples.
