Background: Previous studies have shown that education level is associated with the prognosis of cadaveric kidney transplant recipients. However, it is unclear whether education affects the prognosis of living kidney transplant (LDKT) recipients. In addition, it remains to be determined whether the uneven distribution of educational levels consistently affects the prognosis of LDKT recipients across ethnic groups (White, Black, Hispanic and Asian). Methods: After establishing inclusion and exclusion criteria, we conducted a retrospective study of LDKT recipients who received their first single LDKT between 2005 and 2020. The LDKT recipients were divided into lower- and higher-education groups according to categorize the educational level of recipients, and transplant outcomes, including graft survival, patient survival, and death-censored graft survival (DCGS), were analyzed and compared. Results: Graft survival, DCGS and patient mortality were significantly better in the higher-education group compared with those in the lower-education group (P<0.001), with the risk of graft failure, death censored graft failure (DCGF) and patient mortality increasing by 11%, 15% and 7% in the lower-education group, respectively. Furthermore, compared with the higher-education group, the risk of graft failure in Black recipients increased by 18% [adjusted hazard ratio (aHR), 1.18; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.07 to 1.30], and the risk of patient mortality among White recipients decreased by 7% (aHR, 0.93; 95% CI: 0.87 to 0.99). However, there were no significant differences in graft failure and patient mortality among Hispanic and Asian recipients, respectively. Conclusions: This study revealed that LDKT recipients with a higher education level had better transplant outcomes. However, these transplant outcome differences were mainly found in White and Black recipients. These data confirm the significant effect of different levels of education on the prognosis of LDKT recipients.

Air pollution is still an important risk factor that endangers the health of Chinese people, leading the government to implement a series of policies to address air pollution. This study takes the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan (APPCAP) proposed in 2013 as the object and uses the combined data set of China's 2000-2019 economic panel data and PM2.5 remote sensing data to analyse the implementation effect of the policy by the multiperiod difference-in-differences method, considering regional heterogeneity. The results show that the implementation of the APPCAP significantly reduced the PM2.5 concentration in China, and the effect was stronger in the Yangtze River Delta region. Future governance policies should further consider local characteristics and determine pollution control goals and measures according to local conditions.

Background: Racial/ethnic disparity in waiting-list mortality among candidates listed for kidney transplantation (KT) in the United States remains unclear. We aimed to assess racial/ethnic disparity in waiting-list prognosis among patients listed for KT in the United States in the current era. Methods: We compared waiting-list and early posttransplant in-hospital mortality or primary nonfunction (PNF) among adult (age ≥18 years) white, black, Hispanic, and Asian patients listed for only KT in the United States between July 1, 2004 and March 31, 2020. Results: Of the 516,451 participants, 45.6%, 29.8%, 17.5%, and 7.1% were white, black, Hispanic, and Asian, respectively. Mortality on the 3-year waiting list (including patients who were removed for deterioration) was 23.2%, 16.6%, 16.2%, and 13.8% in white, black, Hispanic, and Asian patients, respectively. The cumulative incidence of posttransplant in-hospital death or PNF after KT was 3.3%, 2.5%, 2.4%, and 2.2% in black, white, Hispanic, and Asian patients,respectively. White candidates had the highest mortality risk on the waiting list or of becoming too sick for a transplant, while black (adjusted hazard ratio, [95% confidence interval, CI], 0.67 [0.66-0.68]), Hispanic (0.59 [0.58-0.60]), and Asian (0.54 [0.52-0.55]) candidates had a lower risk. Black KT recipients (odds ratio, [95% CI] 1.29 [1.21-1.38]) had a higher risk of PNF or death before discharge than white patients. After controlling confounders, black recipients (0.99 [0.92-1.07]) had a similar higher risk of posttransplant in-hospital mortality or PNF as white patients than Hispanic and Asian counterparts. Conclusions: Despite having a better socioeconomic status and being allocated better kidneys, white patients had the worst prognosis during the waiting periods. Black recipients and white recipients have higher posttransplant in-hospital mortality or PNF.

The mud snail Cipangopaludina cathayensis is a widely distributed species in China. Particularly in Guangxi province, mud snail farming contributes significantly to the economic development. However, global warming in recent decades poses a serious threat to global aquaculture production. The rising water temperature is harmful to aquatic animals. The present study explored the effects of high temperature on the intestinal microbiota of C. cathayensis. Snail intestinal samples were collected from the control and high-temperature groups on days 3 and 7 to determine the gut microbiota composition and diversity. Gut bacterial community composition was investigated using high-throughput sequencing of the V3-V4 region of bacterial 16S rRNA genes. Our results suggested that thermal stress altered the gut microbiome structure of C. cathayensis. At the phylum level, Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Firmicutes were dominant in C. cathayensis gut microbiota. The T2 treatment (32 ± 1 °C, day 7) significantly decreased the relative abundance of Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, and Deinococcus-Thermus. In T2, the abundance of several genera of putatively beneficial bacteria (Pseudomonas, Aeromonas, Rhodobacter, and Bacteroides) decreased, whereas the abundance of Halomonas-a pathogenic bacterial genus-increased. The functional prediction results indicated that T2 treatment inhibited some carbohydrate metabolism pathways and induced certain disease-related pathways (e.g., those related to systemic lupus erythematosus, Vibrio cholerae infection, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and shigellosis). Thus, high temperature profoundly affected the community structure and function of C. cathayensis gut microbiota. The results provide insights into the mechanisms associated with response of C. cathayensis intestinal microbiota to global warming.

Little is known about the impact of socio-economic and environmental factors on the associations between PM2.5 exposure and health risk for elementary students. We estimated the space variability of effects of PM2.5 on daily illness-related absence rate for 2278 elementary schools from 97 counties across Jiangsu Province with data collected in the 2016-17 academic year. We evaluated the effects at school- and county-scales and examined the role of socio-economic and environmental factors with generalized addictive models (GAM). With an interquartile range (IQR, 32 µg/m3) increase in PM2.5 concentration, the relative risk of absence rate for a given school ranged between 1.00 and 2.81. Factors including high economic development level, low health expenditure, dense road network, dense population and low vegetation coverage drove strong effects for schools/counties. For the implementation of efficient clean air policies and public health interventions, we should concern about not only high-polluted areas but also areas under specific socio-economic and environmental conditions.

This paper proposes a framework for a layout evaluation of urban public sports facilities. First, the buffer analysis method is used to measure the service level of public sports facilities. The study findings indicate that the overall service level of public sports facilities presents the spatial characteristics of a central agglomeration, and the value of the service level diffuses outward from high to low. There is evident spatial heterogeneity in the layout of public sports facilities in Hangzhou. Second, the Gini coefficient, Lorenz curve, and location entropy are employed to measure the equity of the distribution among spatial units and the intradistrict disparity. The results show a mismatch between the spatial distribution of the facilities and the distribution of the permanent population. The patterns of distribution of the location entropy classes of Hangzhou can be divided into three types: balanced, alternating, and divergent districts. The method in this paper is effective in measuring spatial equity and visualizing it. it has a certain degree of systemicity, universality and operability. At the same time, this method can compare the diachronic characteristics of the same city and the synchronic characteristics of different cities, which has universal application value.

Lead (Pb) exposure is known to affect the health of children while soil Pb is an important contributor to human Pb exposure. To analyze the effects of both environmental and other factors, especially total and bioaccessible Pb in neighborhood soil, on school-aged urban children's blood lead level (BLL), 75 children (6-11 years old) were recruited from an industry city in eastern China for BLL measurement and questionnaire survey. Soil samples were collected from their living neighborhoods and measured for total and bioaccessible Pb. The mean BLL was 4.82 µg dL-1, with 42 out of 75 children having BLL exceeding the international guideline of 5 µg dL-1. Low Pb contamination was observed in soil with total Pb ranging from 12.5 to 271 mg kg-1 (mean 34.3 mg kg-1). Based on the in vitro Solubility Bioaccessibility Research Consortium (SBRC) gastric fluid extraction, bioaccessible Pb in soil ranged from 0.40 to 79.1 mg kg-1 (mean 7.58 mg kg-1) with Pb bioaccessibility ranging from 1.74 to 68.1 (mean 19.9%). When BLL was correlated with total Pb in soil, insignificant linear relationship was observed (P > 0.05, correlation coefficient 95%CI = -0.047-0.40, R2 = 0.07). However, when BLL was correlated with soil bioaccessible Pb or Pb bioaccessibility, much stronger linear relationships were observed (P < 0.01, correlation coefficient 95%CI = 0.28-0.64, R2 = 0.16-0.20), suggesting that bioaccessible Pb was a much stronger predictor of BLL. In addition, strong associations were also observed between BLL and social factors such as house decoration, residence time, and personal habits, suggesting that both soil Pb contamination and social factors play important roles in elevating BLL for city children.

This 90-day study aimed to assess the dietary safety of transgenic rice EH which is rich in ß-carotene. Two experimental groups of Sprague-Dawley rats were fed diets containing 45% rice flour of Zhonghua 11 rice and transgenic rice EH rich in ß-carotene, respectively. The reference group was fed a diet containing standard feed nutrition. During the trial period, each rat was weighed and the food intake was recorded twice a week. Their behaviors were observed daily. In the end, blood samples were obtained from all anesthetized rats to measure the hematologic and serum chemistry indicators. Growth performance, anatomy and pathology of all organs in each group were analyzed. Although a few parameters were found to be statistically significantly different across groups, they were within the normal reference range for this breed and age of rats. Therefore, the changes were not considered to be diet related. The results revealed that the transgenic rice EH rich in ß-carotene was as nutritious as Zhonghua 11 rice and showed a lack of biologically meaningful unintended effects.

Varieties of the economically important ornamental species chrysanthemum have been bred to fit a number of market niches, but the genetic basis and evolutionary relationships among various cultivated types are poorly understood. Here, a DNA marker-based analysis of 199 chrysanthemum entries representing each of the five cultivated types is presented. A set of >90,000 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with a minor allele frequency of at least 5% was defined, and used to perform a phylogenetic analysis which corresponded well with the phenotypic classification. The analysis revealed that the small-flowered types, spray cut chrysanthemum (SCC) and potted and ground chrysanthemum (PGC), are more closely related to the wild progenitor species (WC) than are the large-flowered ones, disbud cut chrysanthemum (DCC) and traditional chrysanthemum (TC); and the PGC type was closest. Some 550 genetic regions appeared to have experienced selection in the separation of potted and ground-cover types from disbud cut types, and that between potted and ground-cover types from traditional types. A genome-wide association analysis revealed that seven SNPs lying within six genes were predictive of three important traits (ray floret type, cultivated type and flower shape), but no association with flower color was detected. The study has provided a number of novel insights into evolutionary relationships, the population structure and the genetic basis of some key ornamental traits.
