BACKGROUND: Ureteral cancer is a rare cancer. This study aimed to provide an up-to-date and comprehensive analysis on the global trends of ureteral cancer incidence and its association with lifestyle and metabolic risk factors. METHODS: The incidence of ureteral cancer was estimated from the Cancer Incidence in Five Continents Plus and Global Cancer Observatory databases. We analyzed the (1) global incidence of ureteral cancer by region, country, sex, and age group by age-standardized rates (ASR); (2) associated risk factors on a population level by univariable linear regression with logarithm transformation; and (3) incidence trend of ureteral cancer by sex and age group in different countries by Average Annual Percentage Change (AAPC). RESULTS: The global age-standardized rate of ureteral cancer incidence in 2022 was 22.3 per 10,000,000 people. Regions with higher human development index (HDI), such as Europe, Northern America, and East Asia, were found to have a higher incidence of ureteral cancer. Higher HDI and gross domestic product (GDP) and a higher prevalence of smoking, alcohol drinking, physical inactivity, unhealthy dietary, obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and lipid disorder were associated with higher incidence of ureteral cancer. An overall increasing trend of ureteral cancer incidence was observed for the past decade, especially among the female population. CONCLUSIONS: Although ureteral cancer was relatively rare, the number of cases reported was rising over the world. The rising trends among females were more evident compared with the other subgroups, especially in European countries. Further studies could be conducted to examine the reasons behind these epidemiological changes and confirm the relationship with the risk factors identified.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to investigate the global disease burden, risk factors, and temporal trends of eye cancer by sex and age group. METHODS: Databases including Cancer Incidence in Five Continents volumes I-XI, the Nordic Cancer Registries, the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program and the WHO IARC mortality database were accessed to extract incidence and mortality data. Joinpoint regression analyses were conducted to evaluate the Average Annual Percentage Change of the incidence and mortality. RESULTS: The age-standardised rates of eye cancer incidence and mortality were 0.49 and 0.08 globally in 2020. Higher incidence rates were observed in Sub-Saharan Africa (ASR = 4.06), Western Europe (ASR = 0.89), and Northern Europe (ASR = 0.84), but higher mortality was observed only in Sub-Saharan Africa (ASR = 1.59). Lower HDI, higher prevalence of UV exposure and lower prevalence of several lifestyle habits and metabolic syndromes were associated with higher incidence and mortality. There was an overall stable incidence trend and a decreasing mortality trend. Notably, all countries reporting decreasing trend in mortality were in the Asian or European region. CONCLUSIONS: Although higher incidence was observed in both African and European regions, only the Sub-Saharan Africa region reported high mortality, indicating inequity in the access of healthcare and treatment resource. Higher prevalence of UV exposure was associated with both higher incidence and mortality. Education should be provided to increase the awareness of eye protection. An overall declining mortality trend was found, but it was limited to only Asian and European countries.

BACKGROUND: Fecal immunochemical test (FIT) is a commonly used initial test for colorectal cancer (CRC) screening. Parallel use of FIT with risk assessment (RA) could improve the detection of non-bleeding lesions, but at the expense of compromising sensitivity. In this study, we evaluated the accuracy of FIT and/or RA in the Shanghai CRC screening program, and systematically reviewed the relevant evaluations worldwide. METHODS: RA and 2-specimen FIT were used in parallel in the Shanghai screening program, followed by a colonoscopy among those with positive results. Sensitivity, specificity, detection rate of CRC, positive predictive value (PPV), and other measures with their 95% confident intervals were calculated for each type of tests and several assumed combined tests. We further searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library for relevant studies published in English up to January 5, 2022. RESULTS: By the end of 2019, a total of 1,901,360 participants of the screening program completed 3,045,108 tests, with 1,901,360 first-time tests and 1,143,748 subsequent tests. Parallel use of RA and 2-specimen FIT achieved a sensitivity of 0.78 (0.77-0.80), a specificity of 0.78 (0.78-0.78), PPV of 0.89% (0.86-0.92), and a detection rate of 1.99 (1.93-2.05) for CRC per 1000 among participants enrolled in the first screening round, and performed similarly among those who participated for several times. A meta-analysis of 103 published observational studies demonstrated a higher sensitivity [0.76 (0.36, 0.94)] but a much lower specificity [0.59 (0.28, 0.85)] of parallel use of RA and FIT for detecting CRC in average-risk populations than in our subjects. One-specimen FIT, the most commonly used initial test, had a pooled specificity comparable to the Shanghai screening program (0.92 vs. 0.91), but a much higher pooled sensitivity (0.76 vs. 0.57). CONCLUSION: Our results indicate the limitation of FIT only as an initial screening test for CRC in Chinese populations, and highlight the higher sensitivity of parallel use of RA and FIT. Attempts should be made to optimize RA to improve effectiveness of screening in the populations.

BACKGROUND: Lip, oral and pharyngeal cancers make up a small percentage of total cancer cases worldwide and have reported lower rates of cancer-related deaths globally in 2020, but their 5-year survival rate in either early or advanced stages is different. The study evaluated the global incidence, mortality, risk factors, and temporal trends by age, gender, and geographical locations of lip, oral cavity, and pharyngeal cancer. METHODS: Incidence and mortality rates were extracted from Cancer Incidence in Five Continents (CI5) volumes I-XI, the Nordic Cancer Registries (NORDCAN), the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program, and the WHO IARC mortality database. Joinpoint regression was used to calculate the Average Annual Percentage Change to examine trends. RESULTS: The highest incidence rates were found in Melanesia and South-Central Asia and mortality rates were 8.2 and 7.5. Risk factors associated with incidence and mortality included HDI, tobacco use, alcohol consumption, poor diet, and chronic health conditions such as hypertension. Increasing trends of incidence and mortality were observed in females from Malta; males aged 50 and above from the United Kingdom, and females aged 50 and above from Slovakia reporting the largest increase. CONCLUSIONS: Although global incidence and mortality trends reported an overall decrease, significant increases were found for older age groups and female subjects. Incidence increase may be due to the growing prevalence of lifestyle, metabolic risk factors, and HPV infections, especially in developed countries.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the worldwide distribution, risk factors, and temporal trends of corpus uteri cancer for different countries and age groups. METHOD: Data relating to corpus uteri cancer in 2020 were retrieved from the Global Cancer Observatory database. Data from Cancer Incidence in Five Continents and the WHO mortality database were used for trend analysis. Age-standardized rates (ASR, per 100 000 persons) were calculated for incidence and mortality. Joinpoint regression analysis was used to estimate the 10-year annual average percent change (AAPC). RESULTS: A total of 417 367 new cases and 97 370 new deaths of corpus uteri cancer were reported globally in 2020. The highest incidence was observed in high-income countries. Higher ASR of mortality of corpus uteri cancer was associated with a higher gross domestic product per capita, higher Human Development Index, and higher prevalence of smoking, alcohol drinking, physical inactivity, obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and lipid disorders. There was a substantial increasing trend of corpus uteri cancer, with the largest AAPC in incidence found in Japan, followed by India, Chile, Korea, and Thailand. CONCLUSION: The incidence and mortality of corpus uteri cancer have been increasing substantially for the past 10 years. Intensive lifestyle modifications are needed, especially among younger women.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to examine the global disease burden and trends of prostate cancer incidence and mortality by age, and their associations with gross domestic product (GDP), human development index (HDI), smoking, and alcohol drinking. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrieved the Global Cancer Observatory (GLOBOCAN) database for the incidence and mortality of prostate cancer in 2020; the World Bank for GDP per capita; the United Nations for HDI; the WHO Global Health Observatory for prevalence of smoking and alcohol drinking; the Cancer Incidence in 5 Continents (CI5), WHO mortality database, for trend analysis. We presented the prostate cancer incidence and mortality using age-standardized rates. We examined their associations with GDP, HDI, smoking, and alcohol drinking by Spearman's correlations and multivariable regression. We estimated the 10-year trend of incidence and mortality by joinpoint regression analysis with average annual percent change with 95% confidence intervals in different age groups. RESULTS: A wide variation in the burden of prostate cancer with the highest mortality found in low-income countries while the highest incidence was observed in high-income countries. We found moderate to high positive correlations for GDP, HDI, and alcohol drinking with prostate cancer incidence, whilst a low negative correlation was observed for smoking. Globally, there was an increasing incidence but decreasing mortality of prostate cancer, and such trends were particularly prominent in Europe. Notably, the incidence increase was also found in the younger population aged <50 years. CONCLUSIONS: There was a global variation in the burden of prostate cancer associated with GDP, HDI, smoking, and alcohol drinking.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the global incidence, mortality, associated risk factors, and temporal trends of central nervous system (CNS) cancer by sex, age, and country. METHODS: We extracted incidence and mortality of CNS cancer from the GLOBOCAN (2020), Cancer Incidence in Five Continents series I-X, WHO mortality database, the Nordic Cancer Registries, and the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program. We searched the Global Health data exchanges for the prevalence of its associated risk factors. We tested the trends by Average Annual Percentage Change (AAPC) from Joinpoint regression analysis with 95% confidence intervals in different age groups. RESULTS: The age-standardized rates (ASRs) of CNS cancer incidence and mortality were 3.5 and 2.8 per 100,000 globally. Southern Europe (ASR = 6.0) and Western Asia (ASR = 4.2) had the highest incidence and mortality, respectively. The incidence was associated with Human Development Index, Gross Domestics Products per capita, prevalence of traumatic brain injuries, occupational carcinogens exposure, and mobile phone use at the country level. There was an overall stable and mixed trend in the CNS cancer burden. However, increasing incidence was observed in younger male population from five countries, with Slovakia (AAPC = 5.40; 95% CI 1.88, 9.04; P = .007) reporting the largest increase. CONCLUSIONS: While the overall global trends of cancer have been largely stable, significant increasing trends were found in the younger male population. The presence of some higher-HDI countries with increasing mortality suggested an ample scope for further research and exploration of the reasons behind these epidemiological trends.

Several vaccines have been developed for COVID-19 since the pandemic began. This study aimed to evaluate the factors associated with COVID-19 vaccination intention. A global survey was conducted across 26 countries from October, 2020 to December, 2021 using an online self-administered questionnaire. Demographic information, socio-economic status, and clinical information were collected. A logistic regression examined the associations between vaccine intention and factors such as perceptions and the presence of chronic physical and mental conditions. The sample included 2459 participants, with 384 participants (15.7%) expressing lower COVID-19 vaccination intent. Individuals who identified as female; belonged to an older age group; had a higher level of education; were students; had full health insurance coverage; or had a previous history of influenza vaccination were more willing to receive vaccination. Conversely, those who were working part-time, were self-employed, or were receiving social welfare were less likely to report an intention to get vaccinated. Participants with mental or physical health conditions were more unwilling to receive vaccination, especially those with sickle cell disease, cancer history within the past five years, or mental illness. Stronger vaccination intent was associated with recommendations from the government or family doctors. The presence of chronic conditions was associated with lower vaccine intention. Individuals with health conditions are especially vulnerable to health complications and may experience an increased severity of COVID-19 symptoms. Future research should evaluate the effectiveness of interventions targeting the vaccine perceptions and behaviours of at-risk groups. As such, public awareness campaigns conducted by the government and proactive endorsement from health physicians may help improve COVID-19 vaccination intention.

BACKGROUND: Multiple myeloma accounted for 176 404 (14%) of 1 278 362 the incidence cases leukaemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma in 2020. Identifying its geographical distribution, risk factors, and epidemiological trends could help identify high-risk population groups. We aimed to examine the worldwide incidence, mortality, associated risk factors, and temporal trends of multiple myeloma by sex, age, and geographical region. METHODS: The incidence and mortality of multiple myeloma were extracted from Global Cancer Observatory (2020), Cancer Incidence in Five Continents, WHO mortality database, Nordic Cancer Registries, and Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (1980-2019). The WHO Global Health Observatory data repository was searched for the age-standardised prevalence of lifestyle and metabolic risk factors (2010). Associations with risk factors were examined by multivariable regression. The temporal trends were evaluated by average annual percentage change (AAPC) using joinpoint regression. FINDINGS: The age-standardised rate (ASR) of multiple myeloma incidence was 1·78 (95% UI 1·69-1·87) per 100 000 people globally and mortality was 1·14 (95% UI 1·07-1·21) per 100 000 people globally in 2020. Increased incidence and mortality were associated with higher human development index, gross domestics product, prevalence of physical inactivity, overweight, obesity, and diabetes. Australia and New Zealand (ASR 4·86 [4·66-5·07]), northern America (4·74 [4·69-4·79]), and northern Europe (3·82 [3·71-3·93]) reported the highest incidence. The lowest incidences were observed in western Africa (0·81 [0·39-1·66]), Melanesia (0·87 [0·55-1·37]), and southeastern Asia (0·96 [0·73-1·27]). Overall, more countries had an increase in incidence, especially in men aged 50 years or older. The countries with the highest incidence increase in men older than 50 years were Germany (AAPC 6·71 [95% CI 0·75-13·02] p=0·027), Denmark (3·93 [2·44-5·45] p=0·00027), and South Korea (3·25 [0·69-5·88] p=0·019). For women aged 50 years or older, Faroe Islands (21·01 [2·15-43·34] p=0·032), Denmark (4·70 [1·68-7·82], p=0·0068), and Israel (2·57 [0·74-4·43] p=0·012) reported the greatest increases. Overall, there was a decreasing trend for multiple myeloma mortality. The highest mortality was observed in Polynesia (ASR 2·69 [0·74-9·81]), followed by Australia and New Zealand (1·84 [1·73-1·96]) and northern Europe (1·80 [1·73-1·88]). The lowest mortalities were reported in southeastern Asia (ASR 0·82 [0·62-1·09]), eastern Asia (0·76 [0·71-0·81]), and Melanesia (0·73 [0·61-0·87]). Men (1·41 [1·29-1·53]) were found to have mortality higher than women (0·93 [0·85-1·02]). INTERPRETATION: There was an increasing trend of multiple myeloma incidence globally, particularly in men, people aged 50 years or older, and those from high-income countries. The overall decreasing global trend of multiple myeloma mortality was more evident in women. Lifestyle habits, diagnosis capacity, and treatment availability should be improved to control the increasing trends of multiple myeloma in high-risk populations. Future studies should explore the reasons behind these epidemiological transitions. FUNDING: None.

AIMS/INTRODUCTION: Metabolic syndrome (MS) has been increasing worldwide. The secular change in MS components, however, remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the dynamic change in metabolic health status in Chinese adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three population-based surveys using multistage stratified sampling were performed in Chinese aged 35-74 years in Shanghai in 2002-2003 (n = 12,302), 2009 (n = 7,400), and 2017 (n = 19,023). MS was defined according to the Adult Treatment Panel III criteria for Asian-Americans. Generalized Estimating Equations and Cochran-Armitage Trend Test was used to assess the prevalence trend over the years. RESULTS: The prevalence of MS doubled in Chinese adults over the period (P for trend < 0.001). The largest increase occurred in younger men. Among MS components, the prevalence of high waist-circumference (HWC), high blood glucose (HBG) and high blood pressure (HBP) increased in all subjects, whereas the prevalence of high triglycerides (HTG) and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LHC) increased in men but decreased in women. The increase in HBP contributed most to elevated MS, followed by HBG and HWC, resulting in the HBP-HBG-HWC the most common cluster of MS components. Metabolically unhealthy overweight also grew over the period. CONCLUSIONS: Metabolic health status has been exacerbating in Chinese adults and may increase burden of non-communicable diseases.

INTRODUCTION: To compare the performance and the costs of various assumed screening strategies for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among Chinese adults, and identify an optimal one for the population. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Two multistage-sampling surveys were conducted in Shanghai, China, in 2009 and 2017. All participants were interviewed, had anthropometry, measured fasting plasma glucose (FPG), hemoglobin A1c (A1c) and/or postprandial glucose. The 1999 WHO diagnostic criteria was used to identify undiagnosed T2DM. A previously developed Chinese risk assessment system and a specific risk assessment system developed in this study were applied to calculate diabetes risk score (DRS) 1 and 2. Optimal screening strategies were selected based on the sensitivity, Youden index and the costs using the 2009 survey data as the training set and the 2017 survey data as the validation set. A twofold cross-validation was also performed. RESULTS: Of numerous assumed strategies, FPG ≥5.6 mmol/L alone performed well (Youden index of 71.8%) and cost least (US$18.4 for each case detected), followed by the strategy of DRS2 ≥8 combining with FPG ≥5.6 mmol/L (Youden index of 71.7% and US$20.2 per case detected) and the strategy of DRS1 ≥17 combining with FPG ≥5.6 mmol/L (Youden index of 72.0% and US$21.6 per case detected). However, FPG alone resulted in more subjects requiring oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) than did combining with DRS. The strategy of FPG ≥5.6 mmol/L combining with A1c ≥4.7% achieved a Youden index of 72.1%, but had a cost as high as US$48.8 for each case identified. Twofold cross-validation also supported the use of FPG alone, but with an optimal cut-off of 6.1 mmol/L. CONCLUSIONS: Our results support the use of FPG alone in T2DM screening in Chinese adults. DRS may be used combining with FPG in populations with available electronic health records to reduce the number of OGTT and save costs of screening.

RESUMO

China and Japan share numerous similarities other than their geographical proximity. Facing the great challenges of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), China and Japan have developed different preventive strategies and systems. While Japan has made great progress in primary prevention of NCDs through strong legislation, the 'Specific Health Check and Guidance System' and a unique licensed health professional system, China is attempting to catch up by changing its strategies in NCDs control. In this manuscript, we compared disease burden of NCDs, health care systems and preventive strategies against NCDs between China and Japan. In this light, we summarized the points that the two countries can learn from each other, and proposed recommendations for the two countries in NCDs control.

OBJECTIVES: This study examines the associations of socioeconomic status (SES) with intensity of different types of physical activity (PA) in Chinese adults, aimed at outlining and projecting socioeconomic disparities in PA among the population undergoing a rapid nutrition transition. METHODS: A community-based survey was conducted among 3,567 residents aged 30-65 years old in Jiaxing, China, in 2010. SES and PA were assessed by a structured questionnaire. SES was assessed as socioeconomic index (SEI) score based on self-reported educational attainment, household income and occupation. Metabolic equivalents (METs) were calculated for each subject to quantify the total amount of PA from occupation, exercise, transportation and housework. RESULTS: Intensity of overall PA in this population was 165 MET-hours/week, in which energy expenditure in occupational PA accounted for 82%. Both types and intensity of PA were significantly different by SES: middle SES groups had higher intensity of occupational activities; lower SES subjects engaged in more household work; whereas higher SES subjects were more likely to exercise, more active during commuting and had longer sedentary time. All the three components of SES, education attainment, income and occupation, contributed to socioeconomic disparities in PA in this population. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest an overall insufficiency and socioeconomic inequalities in PA among Chinese adults in Jiaxing, a typical city experiencing a rapid urbanization in China. There is an urgent need to promote leisure-time activities in this population.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of two breast cancer screening modalities conducted in Minhang district of Shanghai, China. METHODS: An organized and an opportunistic breast screening programs were implemented among women aged 35-74 years in Minhang district of Shanghai between May 2008 and Oct 2010, and were compared with the results obtained without screening. Costs related to screening were obtained by access to finance data of the screening programs, and costs of first treatment were collected through patient survey and medical reimbursement system query. Information on breast cancer stage was obtained from Shanghai Cancer Registry and confirmed by medical chart review. The effectiveness of screening was evaluated by breast cancer stage improvement.Cost-effectiveness ratios (CERs) were computed as costs of gaining a stage improvement from a specified screening strategy when compared with the results obtained without screening. Incremental cost-effectiveness (ICER) which compares the two screening strategies was calculated by dividing the difference in total net costs and the difference in stages improved between the two screening strategies. RESULTS: Thirty-five, one hundred and ninety-three and four hundred and seventy-nine breast cancer cases were identified in the organized screening, opportunistic screening and control groups, with an early detection rate of 46.9%, 40.7% and 38.9%, respectively. The costs of screening were 208 yuan per person or 72 453 yuan per case detected in the organized screening group and were 21 yuan per person or 11 640 yuan per case detected in the opportunistic screening group. The total cost was 103 650 yuan per case in the organized screening group, significantly higher than 50 712 yuan in the opportunistic screening group and 35 413 yuan in the control group. However, the average direct medical cost was significantly lower in the organized screening group than that in the opportunistic screening group and control group, with median costs of 11 024 yuan, 13 465 yuan and 14 243 yuan per case, respectively (P<0.001). The additional cost per case detected was 68 237 yuan for the organized screening and 15 299 yuan for opportunistic screening. The CERs were 135 291 yuan and 152 179 yuan per stage improved in the organized screening and opportunistic screening relative to the control group, with ICER of organized versus opportunistic screening being 131 086 yuan per stage improved. CONCLUSIONS: The organized screening modality and the opportunistic one are both effective in early detecting breast cancer in Chinese women. The organized screening costs more than opportunistic screening, but with a better cost-effectiveness. It may be used as an option in economically developed areas of China.

BACKGROUND: The World Bank Loan Project (WBLP) for controlling schistosomiasis in China was implemented during 1992-2001. Its short-term impact has been assessed from non-spatial perspective, but its long-term impact remains unclear and a spatial evaluation has not previously been conducted. Here we compared the spatial distribution of schistosomiasis risk using national datasets in the lake and marshland regions from 1999-2001 and 2007-2008 to evaluate the long-term impact of WBLP strategy on China's schistosomiasis burden. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A hierarchical Poisson regression model was developed in a Bayesian framework with spatially correlated and uncorrelated heterogeneities at the county-level, modeled using a conditional autoregressive prior structure and a spatially unstructured Gaussian distribution, respectively. There were two important findings from this study. The WBLP strategy was found to have a good short-term impact on schistosomiasis control, but its long-term impact was not ideal. It has successfully reduced the morbidity of schistosomiasis to a low level, but can not contribute further to China's schistosomiasis control because of the current low endemic level. A second finding is that the WBLP strategy could not effectively compress the spatial distribution of schistosomiasis risk. To achieve further reductions in schistosomiasis-affected areas, and for sustainable control, focusing on the intermediate host snail should become the next step to interrupt schistosomiasis transmission within the two most affected regions surrounding the Dongting and Poyang Lakes. Furthermore, in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, the WBLP's morbidity control strategy may need to continue for some time until snails in the upriver provinces have been well controlled. CONCLUSION: It is difficult to further reduce morbidity due to schistosomiasis using a chemotherapy-based control strategy in the lake and marshland regions of China because of the current low endemic levels of infection. The future control strategy for schistosomiasis should instead focus on a snail-based integrated control strategy to maintain the program achievements and sustainably reduce the burden of schistosomiasis in China.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome has varied markedly between different studies because of the lack of internationally agreed-upon criteria to define the condition. We estimated the prevalence and lifestyle risk factors of metabolic syndrome according to three definitions of metabolic syndrome in urban Chinese men participating in the Shanghai Men's Health Study (SMHS). METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 3988 middle-aged, urban Chinese men 40-74 years of age who were free of type 2 diabetes at baseline provided fasting blood samples, anthropometric measurements, and information on lifestyle factors and disease history. RESULTS: The three definitions of metabolic syndrome used in this report are from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), the U.S. Third Report of the National Cholesterol Education Program, Adult Treatment Panel (ATP III), and a modified version of the ATP III criteria for Asian populations (ATP III-modified criteria). The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 18.63%, 18.36%, and 29.34% according to IDF, ATP III, and ATP III-modified criteria, respectively. Agreement between the IDF and ATP III criteria was moderate (kappa = 0.43), whereas agreement between ATP III-modified and the IDF and ATP III criteria was good (kappa = 0.71 and 0.70, respectively). Physical activity was associated with a lower prevalence of metabolic syndrome, whereas drinking more than three drinks per day was associated with a higher risk of metabolic syndrome, regardless of the criteria employed. The association between smoking and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in this population failed to reach significance. CONCLUSIONS: Results from this representative sample of middle-aged, urban Chinese men show that metabolic syndrome is highly prevalent in this population. Our data support the hypothesis that physical activity decreases the risk of developing metabolic syndrome and that high alcohol consumption increases risk.
