RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study seeks to evaluate the quality and readability of freely available online patient information resources for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). METHODS: Internet searches were performed for five DVT and PE search terms in July 2020 across three search engines and two metasearch engines. Qualitative content analysis was performed. Readability was assessed using four validated instruments. RESULTS: Two hundred fifty websites were identified of which 62 websites met inclusion criteria.Website structure and content were satisfactory (>50% overall score), accountability was mixed between DVT (47%) and PE (56%) sites, while interactivity was poor (<30%). On qualitative content analysis, anticoagulation (95.2%) was the most discussed treatment while the most discussed procedures were IVC filter placement for DVT and thrombolysis for PE. Overall readability was difficult with median level suitable for ages 14-18 years. CONCLUSION: Freely available online DVT and PE patient information resources publish appropriate content but have very variable accountability and poor readability for the average patient.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Pneumonia is a common disease worldwide in preschool children. Despite its large population size, China has had no comprehensive study of the national prevalence, risk factors, and management of pneumonia among preschool children. We therefore investigated the prevalence of pneumonia among preschool children in Chinese seven representative cities, and explore the possible risk factors of pneumonia on children, with a view to calling the world's attention to childhood pneumonia to reduce the prevalence of childhood pneumonia. METHODS: Two group samples of 63,663 and 52,812 preschool children were recruited from 2011 and 2019 surveys, respectively. Which were derived from the cross-sectional China, Children, Homes, Health (CCHH) study using a multi-stage stratified sampling method. This survey was conducted in kindergartens in seven representative cities. Exclusion criteria were younger than 2 years old or older than 8 years old, non-permanent population, basic information such as gender, date of birth and breast feeding is incomplete. Pneumonia was determined on the basis of parents reported history of clearly diagnosed by the physician. All participants were assessed with a standard questionnaire. Risk factors for pneumonia, and association between pneumonia and other respiratory diseases were examined by multivariable-adjusted analyses done in all participants for whom data on the variables of interest were available. Disease management was evaluated by the parents' reported history of physician diagnosis, longitudinal comparison of risk factors in 2011 and 2019. RESULTS: In 2011 and 2019, 31,277 (16,152 boys and 15,125 girls) and 32,016 (16,621 boys and 15,395 girls) preschool children aged at 2-8 of permanent population completed the questionnaire, respectively, and were thus included in the final analysis. The findings showed that the age-adjusted prevalence of pneumonia in children was 32.7% in 2011 and 26.4% in 2019. In 2011, girls (odds ratio [OR] 0.91, 95%CI [confidence interval]0.87-0.96; p = 0.0002), rural (0.85, 0.73-0.99; p = 0.0387), duration of breastfeeding ≥ 6 months(0.83, 0.79-0.88; p < 0.0001), birth weight (g) ≥ 4000 (0.88, 0.80-0.97; p = 0.0125), frequency of putting bedding to sunshine (Often) (0.82, 0.71-0.94; p = 0.0049), cooking fuel type (electricity) (0.87, 0.80-0.94; p = 0.0005), indoor use air-conditioning (0.85, 0.80-0.90; p < 0.0001) were associated with a reduced risk of childhood pneumonia. CONCLUSIONS: Pneumonia is prevalent among preschool children in China, and it affects other childhood respiratory diseases. Although the prevalence of pneumonia in Chinese children shows a decreasing trend in 2019 compared to 2011, a well-established management system is still needed to further reduce the prevalence of pneumonia and reduce the burden of disease in children.

RESUMO

By monitoring the distribution of emerging contaminants in drinking water from the source to the tap, the concentration of algal toxins, endocrine disruptors, and antibiotics in each water supply link were determined, and the health risks of emerging contaminants to the human body were evaluated. The results showed that algal toxins in the waterworks inflow were mainly MC-RR and MC-LR, whereas the only endocrine disruptors in the waterworks inflow were bisphenol-s and estrone. The algal toxins, endocrine disruptors, and antibiotics were removed effectively after the water treatment process in the waterworks. During the monitoring period, florfenicol (FF) was mainly detected, except in January 2020 when a large number of sulfa antibiotics were detected. The removal effect of FF was obviously correlated with the form of chlorine. Compared with that of combined chlorine disinfection, free chlorine disinfection had a better effect on the removal of FF. The health risk numbers of algal toxins, endocrine disruptors, and antibiotics were far less than 1, especially in the secondary water supply. The results showed that the three emerging contaminants in drinking water did not pose a direct threat to human health.

RESUMO

Postoperative adhesion (PA) is currently one of the most unpleasant complications following surgical procedures. Researchers have developed several new strategies to alleviate the formation of PA to a great extent, but so far, no single measure or treatment can meet the expectations and requirements of clinical patients needing complete PA prevention. Chinese medicine (CM) has been widely used for thousands of years based on its remarkable efficacy and indispensable advantages CM treatments are gradually being accepted by modern medicine. Therefore, this review summarizes the formating process of PA and the efficacy and action mechanism of CM treatments, including their pharmacological effects, therapeutic mechanisms and advantages in PA prevention. We aim to improve the understanding of clinicians and researchers on CM prevention in the development of PA and promote the in-depth development and industrialization process of related drugs.

RESUMO

The entrepreneurship of college students is an important issue related to the harmony and sustainable development of society as a whole. At present, the existing research in the industry pays less attention to the influence mechanism of non-cognitive ability and social support perception on college students' entrepreneurial intention. Using 450 survey data, this paper examines the relationship between non-cognitive ability and college students' entrepreneurial intention in terms of five dimensions: openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and emotional stability. At the same time, it focuses on the role of social environmental factors, namely, social support perception in the relationship between the non-cognitive ability and entrepreneurial intention, and explores the influence path. The results show that openness, conscientiousness, extroversion, and emotional stability have significant positive effects on entrepreneurial intention; agreeableness has no significant effect on entrepreneurial intention; openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and emotional stability have significant positive effects on social support perception. The mediating effect of social support perception is as follows-it is part of the intermediary effect between openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, and emotional stability on entrepreneurial intention; within the influence of agreeableness on entrepreneurial intention, it plays a complete intermediary role. This paper enriches the research results on the impact of non-cognitive ability on entrepreneurial intention, reveals the intermediary effect of social support perception on the impact of non-cognitive ability on college students' entrepreneurial intention, and broadens the field of vision for the study of college students' entrepreneurial intention. The research results can provide a decision-making reference for the promotion of the entrepreneurial intention of college students, alleviating the employment pressure of college graduates in China and promoting sustainable economic development.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The internet has become a leading resource for patients, to research information about their medical conditions. Access to inaccurate information can lead to miscommunication, poor patient satisfaction and effect shared decision-making with the provider. This study seeks to evaluate the quality and readability of patient resources that appear in the top search results for Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS). METHODS: Searches were performed for "TOS" and "Thoracic Outlet Syndrome" on the search engines Google ©, Yahoo ©, and Bing©, and on the meta-search platforms Yippy© and Dogpile©. Websites were screened for exclusion and evaluated by 2 reviewers for accountability, interactivity, structure/organization, and content. Exclusion criteria included duplications, no original content on TOS, resources not intended for patients, foreign language, and inaccessible websites. Reviewers came to a consensus on scoring discrepancies. Four indices were used to evaluate readability. Statistical analysis was performed using the Rstudio with ANOVA. RESULTS: In total, 44 websites met inclusion criteria. There were 25 hospital/healthcare organization websites (57%), 11 open access (25%), 5 government agency (11%), 2 professional medical society (5%), and 1 industry sponsored (2%). Median scores were 5.00 out of 16.00 for Accountability (interquartile range IQR: 1.50-8.75), 1.50 out of 5.00 for Interactivity (IQR:1.50-1.50), 3.00 out of 4.00 for Structure/Organization (IQR: 2.00-3.13), 10.00 out of 25.00 for Content (IQR: 7.90-12.63) and 20.25 out of 50.00 for Total Score (IQR: 16.73-27.75). Websites performed well-describing TOS with 98% of websites providing a definition, 90% providing an etiology, 93% providing description or images of the anatomy, 98% providing symptoms of neurogenic TOS, 93% providing symptoms of venous TOS, and 93% providing symptoms of arterial TOS. Physical therapy was the most discussed treatment option (91%) followed by decompression surgery (86%), thrombolysis (41%), vascular repair (39%), interscalene injections (18%), and embolectomy (11%). There was no significant difference across website types for any category other than accountability where Open Access scored the highest (Table II). Readability was difficult with median Flesch Reading Ease formula score correlating to a college level (IQR: 10th-12th grade-college), median Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level of 10 (IQR: 9th-12th grade), median Standardized Measure of Gobbledygook (SMOG) grade of 10 (IQR: 9th-11th grade), and median Dale-Chall Readability Formula Score correlating to 11th-12th grade (IQR: 11th to 12th-college grade level). There was no significant difference between website types for readability. CONCLUSIONS: The top web results for TOS have varying degrees of quality with a clear gap in certain areas of information. While websites performed well-explaining the disease, they lacked discussion of the full scope of treatment that may be offered. In addition, readability was poor across all website types which will not help patients' understanding of their condition. Providers should take into account the variability in websites when entering into shared decision-making discussions with patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Integrated vascular surgery residency (VS) programs have increased in popularity and offer an accelerated track compared to the traditional fellowship pathway. We sought to create a simple metric for medical students to better assess the competitiveness of VS training programs compared to general surgery (GS) programs. METHODS: GS and VS programs were compared using the National Resident Matching Program match data from 2012 to 2021. Applicant metrics (board scores, research output and experiences, work experiences, and volunteer experiences) from 2015 to 2019 were obtained using the Association of American Medical Colleges Report on Residents. A competitive index (CI) was created (number of programs ranked per applicant divided by match rate) for each specialty and normalized (NCI) to a value of 1 to improve longitudinal comparisons. NCI and number of programs ranked per applicant were plotted across time and a linear regression was performed to evaluate a 10-year trend. RESULTS: The match rate of both specialties was 52% and was similar for GS and VS programs. CI was higher for VS compared to GS (18.4 ± 3.0 vs. 14.5 ± 0.4; P < 0.001). The number of programs ranked per applicant was higher in VS compared to GS (9.4 vs. 7.7, P < 0.05). The linear regression revealed increasing NCI and number of programs ranked per applicant over time for VS programs compared to GS with all R2 > 0.61 (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Matching into a VS programs is becoming increasingly competitive. The average CI was approximately 27% higher for VS programs compared to GS programs despite similar match rates. As VS programs continue to evolve, NCI may be a more useful metric for applicants.

RESUMO

Background & Aims: Tumor-associated chronic inflammation has been determined to play a crucial role in tumor progression, angiogenesis and immunosuppression. The objective of this study was to assess the prognostic value of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in perihilar cholangiocarcinoma (pCCA) patients following curative resection. Methods: Consecutive pCCA patients following curative resection at 3 Chinese hospitals between 2014 and 2018 were included. The NLR was defined as the ratio of neutrophil count to lymphocyte count. PLR was defined as the ratio of platelet count to lymphocyte count. The optimal cutoff values of preoperative NLR and PLR were determined according to receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves for the prediction of 1-year overall survival (OS), and all patients were divided into high- and low-risk groups. Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox regression models were used to investigate the relationship between values of NLR and PLR and values of OS and recurrence-free survival (RFS) in pCCA patients. The usefulness of NLR and PLR in predicting OS and RFS was evaluated by time-dependent ROC curves. Results: A total of 333 patients were included. According to the ROC curve for the prediction of 1-year OS, the optimal cutoff values of preoperative NLR and PLR were 1.68 and 113.1, respectively, and all patients were divided into high- and low-risk groups. The 5-year survival rates in the low-NLR (<1.68) and low-PLR groups (<113.1) were 30.1% and 29.4%, respectively, which were significantly higher than the rates of 14.9% and 3.3% in the high-NLR group (≥1.68) and high-PLR group (≥113.1), respectively. In multivariate analysis, high NLR and high PLR were independently associated with poor OS and RFS for pCCA patients. The time-dependent ROC curve revealed that both NLR and PLR were ideally useful in predicting OS and RFS for pCCA patients. Conclusions: This study found that both NLR and PLR could be used to effectively predict long-term survival in patients with pCCA who underwent curative resection.

RESUMO

Rapid urbanization and industrialization may potentially impact the spatial distribution and transmission of polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). Tianjin, a typical industrialized city with a high urbanization level around Bohai Bay, was selected to evaluate the spatial distribution and ecological risks of PFASs. Water and soil samples were systematically collected and analyzed by using solid-phase extraction and high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC/MS-MS) methods. The results showed that all 12 PFASs were detected in water and soils, and the detection rates of the other congeners were low. The concentrations of ΣPFASs in water ranged from 3.93 to 357.85 ng ·L-1, and the levels of ΣPFASs in soils ranged from 4.60 to 63.85 ng ·g-1. PFBA was the major component in water and soils, and the contribution of PFBA was 37% and 67% in water and soils, respectively. The spatial difference in ΣPFASs in the water bodies was significant. ΣPFAS concentrations in the surface water were higher in the north (mean value of 63.83 ng ·L-1) than in the south (mean value of 51.71 ng ·L-1) and higher in the eastern coastal area (mean value of 71.36 ng ·L-1) than in the western area (mean value of 36.08 ng ·L-1). ΣPFAS concentrations from upstream to downstream of the rivers showed an increasing trend. The highest PFAS concentration was found in the Chaobai River, and the lowest was detected in the South Canal. The spatial distribution of PFASs in soils was higher in the south (mean value of 13.33 ng ·g-1) than in the north (mean value of 6.38 ng ·g-1) and higher in the eastern coastal region (mean value of 11.45 ng ·g-1) than in the western region (mean value of 6.94 ng ·g-1). The soil concentrations of ΣPFASs in the Haihe River Basin were the highest. The source analysis results showed that the emulsification of rubber products, food packaging process, paper surface treatment, fire extinguishing agent use, and electrochemical fluorination process in industrial production were the main sources of PFASs in the soils in the study area. PFOS/PFOA, PFOA/PFNA, and PFHpA/PFOA analyses showed that the main source of PFASs in water bodies was the degradation of precursors. ΣPFASs in a few areas originated from the direct emissions from production, but the atmospheric deposition was small. The results of the ecological risk evaluation indicated that the exposure concentrations of PFASs in water and soils in the study area were at a low ecological risk level. However, the long-term ecological effects of PFASs cannot be ignored because of their long-distance transport capability and high food chain (web) accumulation capability.

RESUMO

Pesticides are widely used in the agricultural Central Valley region of California. Historically, this has included organophosphates (OPs), organochlorines (OCs), and pyrethroids (PYRs). This study aimed to identify perturbations of the serum metabolome in response to each class of pesticide and mutual associations between groups of metabolites and multiple pesticides. We conducted high-resolution metabolomic profiling of serum samples from 176 older adults living in the California Central Valley using liquid chromatography with high-resolution mass spectrometry. We estimated chronic pesticide exposure (from 1974 to year of blood draw) to OPs, OCs, and PYRs from ambient sources at homes and workplaces with a geographic information system (GIS)-based model. Based on partial least-squares regression and pathway enrichment analysis, we identified metabolites and metabolic pathways associated with one or multiple pesticide classes, including mitochondrial energy metabolism, fatty acid and lipid metabolism, and amino acid metabolism. Utilizing an integrative network approach, we found that the fatty acid ß-oxidation pathway is a common pathway shared across all three pesticide classes. The disruptions of the serum metabolome suggested that chronic pesticide exposure might result in oxidative stress, inflammatory reactions, and mitochondrial dysfunction, all of which have been previously implicated in a wide variety of diseases. Overall, our findings provided a comprehensive view of the molecular mechanisms of chronic pesticide toxicity, and, for the first time, our approach informs exposome research by moving from macrolevel population exposures to microlevel biologic responses.

RESUMO

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the intravitreal injection of conbercept in the treatment of macular neovascularization (MNV) secondary to high myopia and to observe the application of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in the treatment follow-up. We reviewed the medical records of 20 patients (21 eyes) with MNV secondary to high myopia who were enrolled in the Department of Ophthalmology of the First Hospital of China Medical University between May 2018 and January 2020. Each patient received one or more intravitreal injections of conbercept (0.5 mg/0.05 mL). The treatment was conducted according to a 1 + PRN (pro re nata) regimen. The changes of best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central macular thickness (CMT), and selected MNV and flow areas measured by OCTA were observed over a 6-month follow-up period. The mean logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR) BCVA was 1.03 ± 0.61 before treatment and improved to 0.83 ± 0.59 (P = 0.007), 0.78 ± 0.62 (P = 0.001), 0.81 ± 0.73 (P = 0.027), and 0.79 ± 0.72 (P = 0.023) at 1 month, 2 months, 3 months, and 6 months after treatment, respectively. The mean CMT was 358.16 ± 206.11 µm before treatment and decreased to 295.38 ± 178.70 µm (P = 0.003), 288.34 ± 165.60 µm (P = 0.004), 284.36 ± 163.07 µm (P = 0.005), and 283.00 ± 160.32 µm (P = 0.004) at 1 month, 2 months, 3 months, and 6 months after treatment, respectively. Nineteen eyes (90.5%) had stable or improved vision at 6 months of follow-up. One month after conbercept injection, in OCTA images, the small-diameter blood vessels of the MNV decreased, the intertwined small blood vessels decreased or even disappeared, and the main or larger-diameter blood vessels were still present. The mean selected MNV and blood flow areas were 0.62 ± 0.81 and 0.22 ± 0.27 mm2, respectively, before treatment and decreased to 0.23 ± 0.33 and 0.07 ± 0.08 mm2 (P = 0.04 for both), respectively, 1 month after treatment. No drug-related systemic or ocular adverse effects were observed. Our results suggest that conbercept can effectively and safely improve BCVA and reduce CMT in patients with myopic MVN (mMNV). OCTA can be used to observe MNV area, blood flow area, and MNV morphological changes after treatment with conbercept, thus providing a reference for treatment follow-up.

RESUMO

Hidden Markov models (HMMs) underpin the solution to many problems in computational neuroscience. However, it is still unclear how to implement inference of HMMs with a network of neurons in the brain. The existing methods suffer from the problem of being nonspiking and inaccurate. Here, we build a precise equivalence between the inference equation of HMMs with time-invariant hidden variables and the dynamics of spiking winner-take-all (WTA) neural networks. We show that the membrane potential of each spiking neuron in the WTA circuit encodes the logarithm of the posterior probability of the hidden variable in each state, and the firing rate of each neuron is proportional to the posterior probability of the HMMs. We prove that the time course of the neural firing rate can implement posterior inference of HMMs. Theoretical analysis and experimental results show that the proposed WTA circuit can get accurate inference results of HMMs.

RESUMO

To study the pollution characteristics of atmospheric heavy metal elements in a living area of Zhengzhou City, assess the potential ecological risks, and determine risks to resident health in this city, the Wuhan Tianhong TH-16A Airborne Particles Intelligent Sampler was used to collect atmospheric PM2.5 in Zhengzhou City. The mass concentrations of 17 metal elements were analyzed by ambient air determination of inorganic elements by ambient particle matter wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. The source of heavy metals was analyzed by the enrichment factor method and principal component analysis. The ecological risk index method and the US Environmental Protection Agency's health risk assessment method were used to evaluate the potential ecological risks and residents' health risks from Cr, Cd, Cu, Zn, Ni, Pb, As, and other elements. The results showed that metals with higher enrichment factor values were Cd, Sb, Pb, and As, and Cd had the highest enrichment factor value. The sources of metal elements in a living area of Zhengzhou City were mainly crust/burning coal, fuel, garbage burning, metallurgical dust, and vehicle emission. The single factor potential ecological hazard index values of Cd, Pb, Zn, As, Cu, Ni, and Cr were 70420.2, 255.3, 204.6, 71.5, 36.9, 24.0, and 5.1, respectively. Cd, As, and Cr in a living area of Zhengzhou City posed a cancer risk, and Cd was the most harmful. Mn had a non-carcinogenic risk.

RESUMO

The three typical carbon enterprises in Zhengzhou were selected as research targets, and the emission characteristics of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and their ozone formation potential (OFP) in different functional areas were studied. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) health risk assessment model was used to evaluate the health risks of VOCs emitted by the carbon industry. The results showed that the concentration of VOCs in the production areas of the three research enterprises was between 89.77-964.60 µg·m-3, and the management area was between 51.46-121.59 µg·m-3. Naphthalene and carbon disulfide were at the highest concentrations in the carbon plants. The ozone formation potential of VOCs in the production area was between 75.42-1416.73 µg·m-3, and in the management area was between 65.32-202.42 µg·m-3, mainly from the contribution of aromatic hydrocarbons and olefins. The carcinogenic health risk (Risk) of VOCs in the production area was 3.5×10-5-2.8×10-3, and in the management area was 2.0×10-5-9.4×10-5, which was higher than the maximum acceptable level recommended by the EPA (10-6). The non-carcinogenic health risk index (HI) of the VOCs in the production area was 3.2-1.4×102, and in the management area was 4.3×10-1-3.8, except for the management area of the first enterprise, which was greater than 1, which may expose the workers. These health factors cause cancer and non-carcinogenic hazards.

RESUMO

Cadmium and aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) are both common and widespread pollutants in food and feed. There are several reports on toxicity induced by Cadmium or AFB1 alone, but few address the toxicity caused by co-exposure to the two substances. In this study, 42 female and 42 male Kunming (KM) mice were divided into seven groups to test the acute oral toxicity of CdCl2 and AFB1, using Karber's method. The combined toxicity was assessed using the Keplinger evaluation system. Acute toxicity symptoms, deaths, and body and organ weights were evaluated, and hematological, blood biochemical, and histopathological analyses were conducted. The results revealed the following median lethal doses (LD50): LD50(Female KM mice) = 62.56 mg/kg; LD50(Male KM mice) = 48.79 mg/kg; LD50(KM mice)=55.27 mg/kg. The combined toxicity of AFB1 and CdCl2 showed an additive effect in mice, and an increase in the mixed dose of AFB1 and CdCl2 resulted in greater toxicity. These results demonstrated that the combined toxicity of AFB1 and CdCl2 was greater than the toxicities of the individual components in mice; thus, this may cause particular challenges when addressing these hazards in food and feed and the associated risk to human and animal health.

RESUMO

We explored the association between socio-demographic factors, coping style, illness perceptions and preferences for disclosure/nondisclosure of cancer diagnosis in 384 Chinese patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. We found that (1) 69.3 percent of the patients preferred disclosure and (2) multivariate analysis showed that four variables were significantly positively associated with preference for disclosure, including active emotional-focused coping style, illness perceptions of personal control, chronic infection of hepatitis B virus, and educational level, whereas perceived emotional impact of illness and objective social support (mainly family support) were significantly associated with preference for nondisclosure. The findings provide useful information for understanding patients' preferences for disclosure/nondisclosure of cancer diagnosis from a psychosocial perspective.

RESUMO

A hybrid model based on the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model and the health risk assessment model for assessing risks associated with sources of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in water was established and applied at Dianchi Lake to test its applicability. The new method contains 2 stages: 1) the sources of PFASs were apportioned by the PMF model and 2) the contribution of health risks from each source was calculated by the new hybrid model. Two factors were extracted by PMF, with factor 1 identified as aqueous fire-fighting foams source and factor 2 as fluoropolymer manufacturing and processing and perfluorooctanoic acid production source. The health risk of PFASs in the water assessed by the health risk assessment model was 9.54 × 10-7 a-1 on average, showing no obvious adverse effects to human health. The 2 sources' risks estimated by the new hybrid model ranged from 2.95 × 10-10 to 6.60 × 10-6 a-1 and from 1.64 × 10-7 to 1.62 × 10-6 a-1 , respectively. The new hybrid model can provide useful information on the health risks of PFAS sources, which is helpful for pollution control and environmental management. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Analysis of gene-gene and gene-environment interactions for complex multifactorial human disease faces challenges regarding statistical methodology. One major difficulty is partly due to the limitations of parametric-statistical methods for detection of gene effects that are dependent solely or partially on interactions with other genes or environmental exposures. Based on our previous case-control study in Chongqing of China, we have found increased risk of colorectal cancer exists in individuals carrying a novel homozygous TT at locus rs1329149 and known homozygous AA at locus rs671. METHODS: In this study, we proposed statistical method- crossover analysis in combination with logistic regression model, to further analyze our data and focus on assessing gene-environmental interactions for colorectal cancer. RESULTS: The results of the crossover analysis showed that there are possible multiplicative interactions between loci rs671 and rs1329149 with alcohol consumption. Multi- factorial logistic regression analysis also validated that loci rs671 and rs1329149 both exhibited a multiplicative interaction with alcohol consumption. Moreover, we also found additive interactions between any pair of two factors (among the four risk factors: gene loci rs671, rs1329149, age and alcohol consumption) through the crossover analysis, which was not evident on logistic regression. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, the method based on crossover analysis-logistic regression is successful in assessing additive and multiplicative gene-environment interactions, and in revealing synergistic effects of gene loci rs671 and rs1329149 with alcohol consumption in the pathogenesis and development of colorectal cancer.

RESUMO

The dominance of the h-->etaeta decay mode for the intermediate-mass Higgs boson is highly motivated to solve the little hierarchy problem and to ease the tension with the precision data. However, the discovery modes for m(h) approximately <150 GeV, h-->gammagamma, and W/Zh-->(lnu/ll)(bb), will be substantially affected. In this Letter, we show that h-->etaeta-->4b is complementary and we can use this decay mode to detect the intermediate Higgs boson at the LHC, via Wh and Zh production. Requiring at least one charged lepton and 4B tags in the final state, we can identify a clean Higgs boson signal for m(h) approximately <150 GeV with a high significance and with a full Higgs mass reconstruction. We use the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model and the simplest little Higgs model for illustration.
