The effect of screen viewing on children's cognitive development has been of concern among parents and researchers. This study investigated the association between children screen time, as reported by parents, and drawing ability, and the confounding effects of socioeconomic characteristics (such as parental education, household income, migration status) and children's competing activities (such as drawing practice, extracurricular activity, outdoor time, sleep time, time playing with parents). Participants included 7577 children aged 3.5 years (50% girls) who underwent the Draw-a-person test (McCarthy score [range = 0-12 points]) in the French nationwide Elfe birth cohort, initiated in 2011. Sex-stratified zero-inflated Poisson regression models were used. Increased screen time was associated with a higher likelihood to obtain a null score in boys (OR 1.15, 95% CI 1.07-1.23) and girls (1.13 [1.03-1.24]) and a lower score in girls only (ß = - 0.02, 95% CI - 0.04; - 0.01). After adjusting for SES, associations were no longer observed, indicating that the association between screen time and drawing abilities was confounded by socioeconomic characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Global brain health has gained increasing attention recently. Imaging markers of brain frailty have been related to functional outcomes in previous studies on anterior circulation; however, little data are available on imaging markers and posterior circulation. PURPOSE: To investigate the impact of brain frailty on functional outcomes in patients with acute perforating artery infarction (PAI) of the posterior circulation. STUDY TYPE: Prospective. POPULATION: One hundred patients (60.78 ± 9.51 years, 72% men) with acute posterior circulation PAI (determined by diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)/time-of-flight MR angiography). FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: T1- and T2-weighted fast spin echo, T2-weighted fluid-attenuated inversion recovery, diffusion-weighted echo planar, gradient echo (susceptibility-weight imaging), and 3D time-of-flight MR angiography sequences at 3.0 T. ASSESSMENT: Periventricular and deep white matter hyperintensities (WMH), enlarged perivascular spaces (EPVS) in the basal ganglia and centrum semiovale area, lacunes, cerebral microbleeds (CMB), and total brain frailty score by calculating the above imaging characters were rated visually by three radiologists with 9, 10, and 11 years of experience and one neuroradiologist with 12. Infarction volume was assessed using baseline diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) data obtained within 24 hours of symptom onset. A modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score >1 on day 90 defined an adverse functional outcome. Associations between the imaging markers of brain frailty and functional outcomes were assessed. STATISTICAL TESTS: Fisher's exact test, Mann-Whitney U test, and multivariable binary logistic regression. A P value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Adverse prognoses (mRS > 1) were observed in 34 (34%) patients. Infarction volume, periventricular WMH, deep WMH, basal ganglia EPVS, CMB, and the brain frailty score were significantly associated with adverse functional outcomes. An increased brain frailty score was significantly associated with unfavorable mRS score on day 90 (odds ratio 1.773, 95% confidence interval 1.237-2.541). DATA CONCLUSION: Advanced MRI imaging markers of brain frailty, individually or combined as a total brain frailty score, were associated with worse functional outcomes after acute posterior circulation PAI. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: 3 TECHNICAL EFFICACY: Stage 3.

Previous studies have primarily focused on the contemporaneous, short-term and medium-term effects of the childhood left-behind experience on subsequent health, but ignored its long-term effects and the mediating mechanisms of health outcomes. Using nationally representative data from the 2018 China Labor-force Dynamic Survey, this study uses self-rated health as a measure of health outcomes to examine the long-term effects of the left-behind experience and elucidate the underlying mechanisms that contribute to health inequality from a life-course perspective. The results show: (1) the childhood left-behind experience exerts a long-term negative impact on self-rated health in adulthood, and this impact persists and does not fade over time after ending the left-behind status; (2) the influence of the childhood left-behind experience on self-rated health demonstrates a cumulative disadvantage effect, with longer duration of being left-behind resulting in greater negative impacts; additionally, there's a critical window effect, with earlier left-behind experience leading to more significant negative outcomes; (3) the experience of being left behind during childhood has a negative impact and threshold effect on social trust in adulthood, meaning that the left-behind experience negatively affects social trust, but the duration of being left behind doesn't exacerbate this reduction; and (4) social trust is a key mediating factor between left-behind experiences and health, explaining 8.70% of this effect, and explaining 12.15% and 7.71% of mediation effects for adults with left-behind experience in middle and primary school stages, respectively.

BACKGROUND: Testicular volume in neonates is a potential indicator of testicular development during the fetal period, particularly the masculinization programming window. Reliable measurements of testicular volume provide an opportunity for early detection of testicular abnormalities. This study aimed to assess the testicular volume in neonates and evaluate its relationship with gestational week and birth weight in Hainan Province, China. METHODS: Data on 458 neonates who underwent ultrasonography examinations at our institution from 2018 to 2022 were collected. The neonates were categorized by gestational week, birth weight, and presence of cryptorchidism. We evaluated the testicular volume among different groups and its relationship to gestational week and birth weight. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between the right and left testicular volume in neonates without cryptorchidism. However, a significant difference was observed between normal birth weight and low birth weight neonates in terms of testicular volume. Similarly, there was a significant difference between premature and full-term neonates in testicular volume. Bilateral testicular volume showed positive and significant correlations with gestational week and birth weight. Additionally, a significant difference was noted in testicular volume between the affected side in neonates with cryptorchidism and the same side in normal birth weight full-term neonates. CONCLUSIONS: We established the normal range of testicular volume for neonates in Hainan Province and demonstrated that testicular volume is positively correlated with both birth weight and gestational week. Cryptorchidism also affects testicular volume during the neonatal period, likely due to reduced androgenic exposure in utero, particularly during the masculinization programming window. The findings of this study have significant implications for assessing testis development during fetal development.

Fat deposition is one of the key factors affecting the economic development of pig husbandry. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression characteristics of caveolae-associated protein 3 (CAVIN3) and to elucidate its effect and mechanism on adipogenic differentiation of porcine preadipocytes. Cell transfection, quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), western blot, and oil red O staining were used to detect the effect of CAVIN3 on the differentiation of porcine preadipocytes. The results showed that CAVIN3 was expressed in various tissues, with higher expression in adipose tissue, differentially expressed during cell adipogenic differentiation, and mainly distributed in the cytoplasm. Functional studies showed that, after CAVIN3 interference in preadipocytes, the expression of adipogenic factors and the content of lipid droplets were significantly decreased (p < 0.05). The results were reversed after CAVIN3 was overexpressed. The mechanism research showed that LY3214996 inhibited the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) phosphorylation and further inhibited lipogenic factors expression. Overexpression of CAVIN3 attenuates the inhibitory effect of LY3214996 on ERK phosphorylation and attenuates its inhibitory effect on adipogenic differentiation. Therefore, this study demonstrated that CAVIN3 promotes the differentiation of porcine preadipocytes by promoting ERK phosphorylation. The present study can lay a theoretical foundation for further studying the molecular mechanism of porcine fat deposition.

Global climate change has led to an increase in both the frequency and magnitude of extreme events around the world, the risk of which is especially imminent in tropical regions. Developing hydrological models with better capabilities to simulate streamflow, especially peak flow, is urgently needed to facilitate water resource planning and management as well as climate change mitigation efforts in the tropics. In view of the need, this paper explores the feasibility of improving streamflow simulation performance in the tropical Kelantan River Basin (KRB) of Peninsular Malaysia through coupling a conceptual process-based hydrological model - Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) with a deep learning model - Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (Bi-LSTM) in two ways. All SWAT parameters were set as their default values in one hybrid model (SWAT-D-LSTM), whereas three most sensitive SWAT parameters were calibrated in the other hybrid model (SWAT-T-LSTM). Comparison of daily streamflow simulation results have shown that SWAT-T-LSTM consistently performs better than SWAT-D-LSTM as well as the stand-alone SWAT and Bi-LSTM model throughout the simulation period. Particularly, SWAT-T-LSTM performs considerably better than the other three models in simulating daily peak flow. Based on the latest projection results of five GCMs from the Sixth Phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) under three emission scenarios (SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP5-8.5), the best-performed SWAT-T-LSTM was run to assess the potential impacts of climate change on streamflow in the KRB. Ensemble assessment results have concluded that both average and extreme streamflow is much likely to increase considerably in the already wet northeast monsoon season from November to January, which has surely raised the alarm for more frequent flood occurrence in the KRB.

AIMS: Our purpose is to assess the role of cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) in prediction models in patients with different subtypes of acute ischemic stroke (AIS). METHODS: We enrolled 398 small-vessel occlusion (SVO) and 175 large artery atherosclerosis (LAA) AIS patients. Functional outcomes were assessed using the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) at 90 days. MRI was performed to assess white matter hyperintensity (WMH), perivascular space (PVS), lacune, and cerebral microbleed (CMB). Logistic regression (LR) and machine learning (ML) were used to develop predictive models to assess the influences of SVD on the prognosis. RESULTS: In the feature evaluation of SVO-AIS for different outcomes, the modified total SVD score (Gain: 0.38, 0.28) has the maximum weight, and periventricular WMH (Gain: 0.07, 0.09) was more important than deep WMH (Gain: 0.01, 0.01) in prognosis. In SVO-AIS, SVD performed better than regular clinical data, which is the opposite of LAA-AIS. Among all models, eXtreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) method with optimal index (OI) has the best performance to predict excellent outcome in SVO-AIS. [0.91 (0.84-0.97)]. CONCLUSIONS: Our results revealed that different SVD markers had distinct prognostic weights in AIS patients, and SVD burden alone may accurately predict the SVO-AIS patients' prognosis.

There is always a temperature difference of more than 10 degrees between the human body, as a sustainable heat source, and the ambient temperature. Converting body heat into electricity that in turn is used to drive personal medical electronics is of significance in smart wearable medicine. To avoid the frangibility and complex preparation of traditional thermoelectric materials, we fabricated a gel electrolyte-based thermogalvanic generator with Fe3+/Fe2+ as a redox pair, which presents not only moderate thermoelectric performance but also excellent flexibility. With a micropore-widespread polyvinylidene fluoride diaphragm implanted in the gel, a thermal barrier was created between the two halves, effectively improving the Seebeck coefficient by reducing its thermal conductivity. Considering the superior temperature response of the gel, a self-powered body temperature monitoring system was established by conformally affixing it to the forehead. Meanwhile, the gel patch with a high specific heat capacity can effectively cool down fever patients. This work may offer a new train of thought for exploiting self-powered wearable medical electronics by scavenging low-grade body heat.

The COVID-19 outbreak-caused blockade and disruption of the supply chain have dramatically increased the prices of perishable food and other products that rely heavily on the timeliness of supply chains. In the case of inflation, this study aims to make some adjustment to the pricing and replenishment strategy of perishable food and compare it with the scenario without considering inflation to determine the impact of the inflation rate, quality deterioration, time value of money, and characteristics of cash flow of perishable food sales on the supply chain decision-making. We used the discounted cash flow (DCF) model to measure retailers' revenue, which established that the optimal pricing and replenishing strategy could maximize the retailers' profit. Besides, the findings were compared with the traditional profit model. Moreover, numerical experiments and sensitivity analysis were provided for decision support to retailers. Overall, this study validates that inflation significantly affects the pricing and replenishment strategy, and the DCF model is more suitable to evaluate the profits of perishable food.

PURPOSE: This retrospective study was designed to assess the safety and effectiveness of open, laparoscopic, robotic colorectal cancer surgery. METHODS: Three hundred patients with colorectal cancer who underwent curative resection in the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University between February 2014 and May 2016 were included. Patients were classified into open surgery group, laparoscopic surgery group, and robot-assisted group. RESULTS: The blood loss in laparoscopic surgery group was less than that in open surgery group, and the blood loss in robot-assisted group less was than the open surgery group. The number of lymph node dissection in robot-assisted group was significantly larger than that in the open group ( P < .05). The distance between the lower edge of the tumor group and the distal margin in robotic group was longer than that of the laparoscopic surgery group and the open group ( P < .05). Three (2.8%) cases of urinary retention occurred in the open surgery group, 4 (3.92%) cases in the laparoscopic surgery group, and 1 (1.1%) case in the robot-assisted group, while 2 (1.87%) cases of sexual dysfunction occurred in the open surgery group, 2 (1.96%) cases in the laparoscopic surgery group, and 1 (1.1%) case in the robot-assisted group. The urinary retention and sexual dysfunction rate did not differ between the 3 groups ( P > .05), but the minimally invasive group showed a certain advantage over the open group. CONCLUSION: Compared to the traditional open surgery, minimally invasive surgery (especially in robot-assisted group) has advantages such as less intraoperative bleeding, rapid postoperative recovery, and radical cure; open group, laparoscopic surgery group, and robot-assisted group have a similar incidence of postoperative complications, but reduction in the incidence of anastomotic leakage and intestinal obstruction. Robot-assisted group has the potential advantage for pelvic autonomic nerve protection.

The relationship between marital status and glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) has not been addressed in depth. Here, we aimed to investigate the association between marital status and survival in GBM. We searched the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database and extracted the data of eligible patients diagnosed with GBM after 2004. Marital status was classified as married, divorced/separated, widowed, and single. A Kaplan-Meier test was conducted to compare the survival curves of different groups. Multivariate Cox regression was performed to evaluate overall survival (OS) and cause-specific survival (CSS) in different groups. Subgroup analysis was applied according to demographics, typical education and income levels in the locale, and insurance status. A total of 30 767 eligible patients were included. The median OS values were 9, 7, 3, 9 months in married, divorced/separated, widowed, and single patients, respectively. After adjustment for other covariates, married patients had better OS and CSS than other patients had. In addition to marital status, demographic factors, disease progression factors, local educational level, and insurance status were also associated with survival in GBM. Furthermore, subgroup analyses revealed the protective effect of marriage in most of the comparisons. Notably, the protective effect of marriage becomes more and more apparent as time goes on. The advantageous effect of marriage on GBM survival is especially prominent in patients who are male, older than 60 years of age, White, or living in middle-income counties. In conclusion, marital status is an independent prognostic factor for GBM.

Under a condition of good air quality (AQI:55-90, PM10:37-97 µg·m-3, PM2.5:17-76 µg·m-3), six groups of 54 samples were collected using an Andersen cascade impactor from both the indoor and outdoor stations in Beijing and Xinxiang from June to August in 2016. The samples were digested by microwave digestion, and nine heavy metal elements (Pb, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Mn, and Co) in the atmospheric particles were determined with an inductively coupled plasma source mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). The results showed that the enrichment index (0-3) of most elements were low in both cities except for Cd[15.0 (Beijing) and 8.47 (Xinxiang)]. Cr, Co, Cu, and Mn in the atmospheric particles from Beijing park, Cd, Pb, and Mn in the atmospheric particles from the Beijing office, Cr, Co, Ni, and As in the atmospheric particles from Xinxiang park, and all nine heavy metal elements in the atmospheric particles from roads in both cities were found to be more concentrated in the coarse fractions; however, Pb, Zn, Cd, Ni, and As in the atmospheric particles from Beijing park, Co, Zn, Ni, Cr, As, and Cu in the atmospheric particles from the Beijing office, Pb, Zn, Cd, Cu, and Mn in the atmospheric particles from Xinxiang park, and all nine metal elements in the atmospheric particles from the Beijing office showed the opposite pattern. The result of a human health risk assessment indicated that the carcinogenic risk of the five carcinogenic elements were all less than 10-4, but a lower potential cancer risk would also occur under long term exposure. For the four non-carcinogenic elements (Pb, Zn, Mn, and Cu), the non-carcinogenic health risk values of Pb, Zn, Mn, and Cu in the atmospheric particulates in Beijing were all far less than 1, which means the corresponding non-carcinogenic risk was negligible; and, except for Mn, there was no obvious non-carcinogenic risk from Pb, Zn, and Cu in the atmospheric particles of Xinxiang.
